SALAMANDER Bay resident Caleb Faragher was recently announced as Star Of The Month by Taylors Beach Top Coach personal training. Caleb’s dedication and determination stood out amongst the field so much that he was unanimously voted for this award by his peers and trainers. ‘Healthy body equals a healthy mind’ is a statement Caleb really relates to since commencing his HSC year. “I started Top Coach partially because Mum had wanted me to go, but it was mainly because I had decided that I needed to change, that I needed to bring in a routine of fitness into my life,” Caleb Faragher, Year 12 Student at St Francis Xavier’s College told Bay News Of The Area. “I wanted to get fit and build up what little strength that I had and lose weight.” “My goals were to CONTINUED Page 2

ETHICS classes, organised by the Primary Ethics association, are now being offered across Port Stephens. In schools where it is offered, parents and their children now have the option of either allowing their child to receive religious education, commonly called Scripture and taught by a volunteer who is also a member of a local church, allowing their child to attend Ethics class also facilitated by a volunteer from the local community, or to have supervised free time. Schools in Port Stephens that currently offer Ethics Classes include Medowie Public School, the first in the region to begin this program in 2012, Shoal Bay, Anna Bay, and Wirreanda Public Schools. Parents in other schools are also looking into establishing Ethics classes. The impetus for the choice of Ethics rather than Scripture came about by those members of the wider community

VOLUNTEERS are needed in the Port Stephens area to support Compeer. Compeer is a community mental health program, under the banner of the St Vincent De Paul Society. It aims to improve the quality of life and self-esteem of adults with mental health issues through one-to-one friendship with a caring volunteer. Friends meet up regularly for simple social activities, such as grabbing a bite to eat, going for a walk or visiting a local attraction. A Compeer friendship addresses the stigma and isolation associated with mental illness, and provides a rewarding and social volunteer experience. Sarah Adams, Compeer Hunter Co-ordinator told News Of The Area, “Often, when people receive a mental health diagnosis, they can experience isolation from the community, and sometimes even from family and friends.”
“This is where Compeer comes in, with the new friendship starting with a one on one hang out for an hour a week to do social activities.” “We currently have 38 matches or active friendships that have turned into long lasting friendships,” Ms Adams said. Once people are feeling well and ready to engage in different elements of the community, they are referred to the program and are matched to a one-on-one friendship with a volunteer. “We have people on our books aging from 18- 87 years and are hoping to introduce youth ranging from 16- 18 years soon,” Sarah Adams added. Whether going out for a coffee, venturing down to the wharf for some fish ‘n’ chips, or conquering Tomaree Mountain, Compeer friends have a wonderful time getting to know each other. The program first started in 2010 in Newcastle and the Hunter but has been successful Australian wide since 1995. Research shows that all

Light up the Library THE program of events organised by Port Stephens Council and its Youth Advisory Panel culminates on 7 April with Light up the Library. The events celebrate NSW Youth Week, an annual statewide celebration organised by young people, for young people. Port Stephens Youth Advisory Panel (YAP) representative, Mahaylia Soars, said the events across the local government area are in line with young residents’ expectations. “Young people want something fun and engaging that recognises the topics that need to be addressed among them,” she said. “The Youth Advisory Panel passes ideas for issues and events onto Council as we brainstorm them at our meetings. “We are in with trends that are going on among our peers at meetings and also at events such as the Youth Forum,” Ms Soars said. Council’s General Manager Wayne Wallis said Council works in tandem with the YAP on addressing issues that affect young people. “Council is proud of its record engaging our young people on issues that are important to them, such as Youth Mental Health,” he said. Bushfire Appeal for Dunedoo By Margie TIERNEY
COMMUNITY generosity has once again been on show, with a bushfire appeal following the recent Sir Ivan Fire. Hardest hit were the areas of Dunedoo, Coolah and Cassilis where the cost has been enormous. The bushfires in February burnt out over 52,000 hectares of land, which is roughly twice the size of Newcastle. The village of Uarbry was gutted, a total of 35 homes were lost, more than 130 outer buildings including shearing sheds, machinery and hay sheds damaged and five thousand head of livestock perished. It was such a fast moving bushfire, at one stage it was travelling six kilometres every seven minutes. Pip Sullivan, a regular visitor to the Port Stephens

region came together with Hawks Nest Golf Club Manager Richard Simmer to pass the yellow bucket around. $1,500 was raised and local businesses also donated prizes for a raffle. “The money and donations were much appreciated and it is mind blowing the help and support we’ve received,” Joy Beams, co-ordinator of Country Women’s Association Appeal said. Eighty-five volunteers are still working in the area, replacing fencing and doing whatever they can to get the area back on its feet. For further information regarding the bushfire appeal contact Pip Sullivan on 0418 479 761.

children cope with Autism.
HUNTER Connect is a not for profit group supporting children with Autism, ADD, ADHD, ODD, Fragile X and developmental delays, and are open to anyone attending their support groups and events from Newcastle, Port Stephens, Upper Hunter and Central Coast. Hunter Connect Families rely on donations and grants to hold events and run its impressive list of programs, such as Yoga classes planned specifically for children with special needs and its annual ‘Surfers with Autism’ event. The group also runs the internationally acclaimed “Secret Agent Social Skills Program”. This program is a Computer Game Pack and Small Group Program designed to help children eight to 12 years of age crack the code of emotions and friendships, and develop the skills to feel happier, calmer and braver while making new friends and keeping
them. Hunter Connect also runs the Siblinks program which is a six-week program for siblings to come along and share their experiences and feelings of what living with a sibling with additional needs means for them. The group has always been about supporting, connecting and advocating for the entire family. Hunter Connect CEO, Rachael Corrigan, told News Of The Area, “It is the belief of Hunter Connect Families that if the whole family including siblings are not supported, then the family unit cannot possibly remain in unison to support the children with additional needs.” This year, the group will reinstate their group sessions and support groups for families. They will be run on the first Wednesday of every month at 7pm, and held at the St Brigid’s Parish Hall on
William Street in Raymond Terrace. The groups are open to parents, carers, siblings and anyone who would like to come along, share a cuppa and connect with people who are on similar journeys. Rachael said, “Raising a child with an additional need can be an isolating experience, we’re asking families to please take that step and connect with us at one of our groups.” “Whilst our website is currently undergoing maintenance, families can check out our Facebook page Hunter Connect and our Hunter Connect Families & Surfers For Autism NSW, Australia.” If anyone would like more information, or to help support Hunter Connect Families, please contact Hunter Connect CEO Rachael Corrigan at rachael@ hunterconnect.org.au.

Send your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,
Easter is just around the corner and it just feels like another day where we have to live up to false expectations and buy lots of chocolate for ungrateful family members. How do we survive? Mrs RL, Medowie Dear Mrs. RL, When Easter buns started hitting the supermarket shelves not long after Boxing Day, that was the line in the sand that made it clear that retail expectations were totally out of sync with reality. I mean it’s bad enough that there are sales right after Christmas with disco light popcorn makers that result in third degree burns and epileptic fits (now half price). But the added pressure of Easter buns? Sheer madness, Mrs RL. Whatever way you sway in a spiritual sense, Easter should be all about family and thankfulness. You cannot, of course, look like the family in the advertising brochures, because they are in a studio with soft lighting and silk pyjamas and a husband holding a tray of croissants with jam, his rippled torso stretching out to reach for a Bilby for little Miriam. That’s not reality, Mrs RL. Reality is making up impossible clues to find Easter eggs to teach the kids some good old Ricky Resilience. Reality is having the dog’s stomach pumped because he started the egg hunt two hours before the family. Reality is putting on two kilos in 24 hours and then lining up for a baked dinner. And there’s something kind of wholesome in that, something that the advertising gurus will never capture. If they could bottle it, they would.
Carpe diem, Jasminda.
RE: “Sky High Vision” (News Of The Area 23 March 2017). Yes I think it would be a fantastic thing to happen. Think of the elderly and people in wheelchairs who would be able to experience this. If the cost for a ride to the top would be affordable for everyone.
But as I have said previously to you, Mr. Palmer, we need decent amenities in our area and maybe the investor could be able to put money into this, as the Council has put this on the back burner, and we also need the bypass road put in to accommodate all the tourists. Charmaine Turner
Different not Less By Sarah STOKES
APRIL is Autism Awareness and Acceptance month. World Autism Day on 2 April has been marked since 2008, following a United Nations General Assembly decision to designate the day. So what is autism? Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that presents in early childhood and is lifelong. The main characteristics concern difficulties with social interaction, repetitive behaviours and intense interest in certain subjects. Being a spectrum, these can vary in intensity from mild to severe, verbal to
non-verbal, sometimes with accompanying intellectual disability. More recently, research has begun to focus on females and how the condition presents quite differently depending on gender. Boys have always been diagnosed at a ratio of 4:1, but this gap is now closing. Girls were often missed or misdiagnosed with conditions such as bipolar and borderline personality disorder. Females are naturally more social and it is believed that girls mimic their peers in order to ‘pass’ as neurotypical but are maybe still more intense with their interests. It is imperative that clinicians are aware of these differences so that girls are

not overlooked and therefore miss out on receiving vital early intervention supports. Australian statistics show that roughly one in 100 people have autism, though that figure is increasing, mainly due to greater knowledge and awareness. In the UK and the US, the figure is much greater. The condition is largely considered to be genetic, with a new study from Yale University suggesting the genes are deliberately selected for their intellectual superiority, which is why the condition has persisted and maybe even increased in numbers. In fact many scientists, artists, actors and inventors are believed to have had the condition, including Albert Einstein, Mozart, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin,
Michelangelo, Andy Warhol, Darryl Hannah, Dan Aykroyd, Susan Boyle, Stanley Kubrick and Temple Grandin. Temple Grandin, Professor of Animal Science in the US, who has revolutionised the way cattle are handled in many countries and is a noted autism speaker herself, says: “If it wasn’t for autistics, we’d all still be standing around in caves chatting” and that autistic people are “different not less”. The contribution of autistic people to the world cannot be underestimated. In upcoming editions, other aspects of the condition will be focussed on, including employment, stigma and supports.
and interests.” “We are currently planning a bus trip to the Easter Show, a trip to Tweed Heads and a cruise later on in the year,” Mr Ritchie said. Nelson Bay Men’s Probus Club, although only open to male membership, encourages and welcomes partners and wives to attend all social get togethers. A special addition to the
Club’s activities includes computer classes which have become very popular with the members. The Club has its monthly meetings at The Nelson Bay Bowling Club on the third Thursday of each month starting at 9.30am. For more details contact President Ken Shadleri on 0429 494 343.
Men’s Nelson Bay Probus By Jewell DRURY
NELSON Bay Men’s Probus Club was the first club on the Tomaree Peninsula beginning more than 35 years ago. The Club currently has 70 members and is looking to increase its membership. Nelson Bay Probus offers men a unique fellowship with other men in the area with activities such as dining out each month, BBQs,
interesting speakers at monthly meetings, golf and bowls’ days, and even cruises together. Yearly membership costs are kept minimal at $60. Bob Ritchie Publicity Officer told Bay News Of The Area, “We encourage new members to our group and have lots of small interest groups gathering regularly within the larger one that cater for everyone’s needs

IS this bloke serious? One of the main attractions of Port Stephens is that it is surrounded by unspoiled National Parks. The construction of a Gondola and viewing platform, similar to say Queenstown in New Zealand, would necessarily require the destruction of a great swath of native flora and fauna on the Tomaree headland.
That destruction would be permanent. Thousands of people each year enjoy walking up the headland through unspoiled native bushland and they must be allowed to continue to do so. Perhaps he imagines that the gondola would leave from the foyer of the Bruce McKenzie casino! And he wants to be Mayor, I don’t think so!

Full Sail Ahead
A 20-knot sou’easter propelled a record fleet in record time from Newcastle to Port Stephens, as the feeder race for – you guessed it – a record 2017 Sail Port Stephens regatta in Nelson Bay NSW. More than 40 yachts crowded the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club start line on an inky grey harbour then enjoyed a 22-mile two-sail dash across Stockton Bight in steep 2-3 metre seas. The packed feeder race augured well for Sail Port Stephens, running April 3-9. The regatta is celebrating its 10th anniversary with its biggest ever fleet of grandprix and high-performance yachts, along with a packed social calendar. An estimated 900 competitors, sailing aboard around 110 yachts, will take part. Uniquely for this event, all levels of sailing and age demographics are engaged. The racing also attracts a strong spectator following to Port Stephen’s shoreline. A mixed fleet of 70 yachts spread across two divisions will enjoy three days of lowerkey racing on Port Stephens. Among them will be 15 Jeanneau entries, 14 Beneteaus, seven Northshores and a handful

enjoying the family-friendly environment,” Regatta Director Paul O’Rourke says. “That’s been one of the key messages from our competitors – don’t mess with the sailing and don’t mess with the socialising.” The Junior One-Sail dinghy division breaks away from the keelboat series to remain in the first week of the NSW school holidays (1112 April) as part of an off-thebeach training program. Regatta patron Matt Allen,
President of governing body Australian Sailing, believes there’s something unique about Sail Port Stephens. “I was talking to some people the other day and asked them to name their favourite regatta – most of them said ‘Port Stephens’, which is interesting,” he says. “The sailing waters are among the best in Australia and you get some terrific tactical racing against a good fleet of boats. You can also enjoy a couple of beers and
have dinner, which brings the friendship and the camaraderie together. You’re not that far away from Sydney … but you’re far enough.” Organised by Corlette Point Sailing Association, Sail Port Stephens is also supported by Destination NSW, Port Stephens Council, Pantaenius Insurance, Garmin, Port Stephens Accommodation, Port Stephens Strata and more. eight deaths per day in Australia due to suicide. The suicide rate amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is more than double the national rate. In 2015, suicide accounted for 5.2% of all Indigenous deaths compared to 1.8% for nonIndigenous people. Bernie told News Of The Area, “There were around 200 people in attendance, fortunately the clouds parted and we were able to use the three greens which we had booked in anticipation of this event.” “The staff at Nelson
Bay Bowling Club were outstanding, included with the entry fee of $20 was a game of bowls, then an enjoyable meal and also a raffle draw.” Bernie, with heartfelt thanks, would like to appreciate those who gave donations for the raffle prizes, the staff at the bowling club and, of course, those who attended on the day. The Port Stephens community spirit is so strong, if people are in need the community join together and create outstanding results. Well done Port Stephens.
Big Win For Michalak By Mandy ELLIS
SUCCESS yet again for Chris Michalak as he has just taken out the 2017 Jack’s Surfboards South Bay Showdown in El Porto, Manhattan Beach California. Chris told News Of The Area, “Surfing is my arena, it’s where I can get out there and let it all go.” “It’s my happy place, surfing saves lives.”
Chris’s next stop on the tour is Huntington Beach, then Barbados, then he’ll fly home to meet up with his girlfriend Kia and head off to the Mad Hueys competition in Keramas, Bali. All of this could not be possible without the support of his amazing family and friends. “I really appreciate the support I am getting from my home of Port

Important Public Notice Wild Dog and Fox Control The NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) in cooperation with the Bulahdelah and District Wild Dog Control Group, NSW Forestry Corp, MidCoast Council and the Hunter Local Land Services will be undertaking an annual 1080 wild dog/fox baiting and trapping program within Myall Lakes and Ghin-doo-ee National Park.
