Lifeline In Nelson Bay

Miracle of Cooper By Mandy ELLIS COOPER Aitchison, born at 27 weeks and one day, 956 grams, transparent skin, 25 percent chance of survival, brain bleed at nine days old with his family told to come and say their goodbyes, is now heading off to kindy at Shoal Bay Public School. Cooper’s mum Samantha ScanesKeith, choking back tears, said, “When you get the call to come say goodbye to your baby, there are no words, walking out of the hospital without your baby is overwhelming, but being told to come say goodbye, I will never forget that feeling.” “That night, I prayed and prayed for a miracle, I cried, I stayed by his side.” “Some 30 hours later, the doctors told me his stats were on the good side, and for me to go home and get some rest.”

Cooper on his first day at kindy.

Amazing story of Cooper... FROM Page 1 His eldest sister Madelyn, now 15, would read the story of Mr Strong to Cooper every time she visited him. Mikayla, now 13, told News Of The Area, “The saddest part for me was when I put all the gowns on and sanitiser, and sometimes I wasn’t allowed to visit my brother, and I wasn’t allowed to touch him.” Cooper, a happy and healthy five year old, has just signed up for Rugby League (NBJRL), and said, “Mummy’s the best person ever, and when I am older, I want to be a football player

and a brick layer.” The future’s looking bright for Madelyn and Mikayla as they set their sights on becoming a paediatric nurse and neonatal intensive care nurse respectively. Samantha said, “Cooper has gone from strength to strength over the past five years; the girls and I are amazed with him, we were told to expect the worst, but he is such a normal kid, he was just in a hurry.” Samantha would like to publicly thank Michelle Keating for her continued support and the Ronald McDonald House where they lived for 115 days.

certainty about height limits,” Mr Waters said. “Many in the community feel that absolute heights of new buildings in Nelson Bay town centre, and on adjacent ridges, need to be limited to maintain the town’s character.” “The number of storeys or levels that a developer wishes to fit into agreed height limits is a matter for them, subject to the normal consultation and assessment processes,” he said. Port Stephens Council’s discussion paper for progress of the town centre and foreshore, released December 2016, proposed that “existing and adopted height limits

Know Bushfire Alert Levels

HOW well do you know your bushfire alert levels? Bushfires can flare up at any time of the year, but are more prone in the warmer months of the year from October to April. Alert levels play an important part of the NSW Rural Fire Service’s education and awareness campaign. It advertises and

be legally included as development standards with the LEP”. Those limits are currently seven storeys (24.5m). The discussion paper states further that “this height limit could be varied to encourage feasible development to occur”. “When and where this variation could be applied would be subject to further rigour through the development of Council Guidelines for the use of Clause 4.6 - Exceptions to Development Standards.” The discussion paper suggests that the “static” property market needs boosting through further development.

“It is well known that the residential unit market in Nelson Bay has been static and has actually declined over the past 10 years,” the paper states. Council planners will be present at TRRA’s General Meeting which will commence at 7pm at Nelson Bay Bowling Club on Tuesday 21 February. The meeting is open to the general public. Port Stephens Council has confirmed that the draft discussion paper ‘Progress of the Nelson Bay Town Centre and Foreshore Strategy’ will be publicly available from 13 February on Port Stephens Council’s website. Members of the public are encouraged to provide feedback on a range of issues until 13 March.

Support Group extend services By Jo FINN

THE Port Stephens Women’s Crisis and Support Group Inc. (PSWCS) is extending their accommodation services to include another three onebedroom units on the site with a one-off grant from Community Builders, together with muchappreciated donations from the community. Soldiers Point Marina – a past contributor to the Yacaaba Centre – has generously donated $40,000 to the project and Rotary Nelson Bay has donated $35,000. “This contribution means that rather than build the units in stages we will be able, together with the other funding and donations received for the project, to complete all three units at once which will keep the cost down considerably,” Lynn Vatner, Manager of the Port Stephens Women’s Crisis and Support Group, said. “The DA has been approved and we are just waiting on some council regulations to be clarified.”

The accommodation is for women who find themselves homeless due to domestic violence, who have reason to stay in the area, have supports, and have no other way to afford to pay current market rents. The rents are subsidised. “We are also very careful that the clients do not have an ex-partner in the area that may cause distress to anyone else living at the site. There are very strict policies regarding the accommodation at the site,” Ms Vatner said. PSWCS has been operating in the Tomaree Peninsula for over 20 years without any ongoing government funding. In that timeframe, a growing level of awareness about domestic violence has been evident. “I do think people have a better understanding of domestic violence because of the combined efforts of so many people and organisations bringing it to the attention of the community,” she said. “Media, police and the public in general have said ‘enough’.

TOMAREE Accommodation Service Inc (TAS) has been recognised for their fantastic support to those living with a disability, through an Australia Day Annual Award from Port Stephens Council. “This is a prestigious award and we are very proud to have been recognised,” Ann Marsden, TAS Social Co-ordinator said. “All the hard work we have put in, we knew was appreciated by those who attend, however, it means so very much that we have been recognised by Port Stephens Council.” Based at Salamander Bay, the NDIS accredited, not-for-profit, purpose built home currently has one vacancy, and is staffed by qualified, caring and nurturing staff.

“We encourage our clients to build on their strengths, and welcome their family and friends, this is their home at the end of the day,” Ann told News Of The Area. The home is designed to cater for those living with a disability who are unable to live independently with aroundthe-clock support. Clients attend day programs of their choice and other community activities are arranged as requested. “It is essential we preserve our clients’ dignity and encourage their skills and abilities,” Ann said. Another aspect of TAS is their social which is held on the last Friday of the month at the Bowling Club, Lemon Tree Passage and due to its popularity, staff are planning

Shout out to young Indigenous leaders YOUNG Indigenous leaders are being given the opportunity to participate in the third National Indigenous Youth Parliament (NIYP), which will take place in Canberra from 23-29 May. “This is a really great opportunity to learn how government works, how laws are made, and to get some experience with public speaking and dealing with the media,” Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson said. “Importantly, it also gives elected representatives like me the chance to hear from young Indigenous people about the issues that affect them, and how, as lawmakers, we might help.” Conducted by the Australian Electoral Commission in collaboration with the YMCA and the Museum of Australian Democracy, NIYP is a week-long leadership program for

50 young Indigenous Australian leaders aged 16-25. It is held in Old Parliament House, Canberra, and includes a two-day simulated parliament, where participants debate issues of importance to their communities. The aim is to promote youth-led advocacy, active community leadership and a commitment to democratic processes. The young people will learn from politicians, the parliamentary press gallery, Indigenous leaders and senior public servants. The NIYP coincides with the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum and National Reconciliation Week. Applications close on 3 March. More information is available at aec.gov.au/ indigenous/niyp/ or by phoning 1300 103 183 or emailing indigenous@ aec.gov.au

Share your healthcare stories DO you have a story, good or bad, about our healthcare system? Meryl Swanson is urging local people to share their Medicare stories on the 33rd birthday of the heart and soul of our universal healthcare system. Labor Leader Bill Shorten and Shadow Health Minister Catherine King have launched an online portal mymedicarestory.com inviting people to share their experiences, good and bad. Mr Shorten said: “While we can’t respond or intervene in every case, your story is vital so we have a thorough picture of what is happening

to healthcare in Australia.” Ms Swanson said she had received complaints to her office about the difficulty people were having in getting through on the Medicare phone line, the length of time refunds were taking to be processed, the more out of pocket expenses people faced, and the insistence of Medicare staff on people using the Medicare app. “The Government has made it so hard for people they are sometimes in despair trying to deal with Medicare, just as they are with Centrelink,” Ms Swanson said. “Sometimes we are able to help, but clearly there are not enough staff in these Medicare offices to do the work required. The Government’s

cuts are taking their toll and we have to do all we can to protect Medicare.” Under the Turnbull Government, Australians are paying more out of their own pockets for Medicare services than ever before “The Turnbull Government must drop the savage cuts to Medicare which has already caused bulk billing rates to fall, and people to pay more for vital healthcare services,” Ms Swanson said. “I urge you to share your experiences so the Government can hear how bad it is.” While the portal does require name and contact details, you can tick a box to keep your submission confidential.

Great start for Kindy Kids By Sarah STOKES

Recipe for Success By Sarah STOKES

TUESDAY 31st January was the first day of school for 2017’s kindy kids at St Michael’s Primary School in Nelson Bay. Parents mingled with staff as the children began to meet each other and make friends. For some, it was a sad occasion and for others, it was less so. Kindy kids are matched with a Mighty Mate from Year 6 to help guide them at the beginning of school. Principal Helen Bourne told News Of The Area, “It is fantastic that these students will be able to have a Catholic education from K-12 on the Tomaree Peninsula. Primary schooling at St Michael’s and for secondary, the new Catherine McAuley Catholic College at Medowie.”

q

LOCAL children spent time during the school holidays learning all about nutrition and how to cook healthy food. Tomaree Neighbourhood Centre (TNC), situated in Tomaree Library and Community Centre at Salamander Bay, hosted the second of its two-part healthy eating programme. Organised by TNC volunteer Helen Dykes, the programme was designed to tackle the ever increasing problem of childhood obesity. The first workshop held in late 2016 targeted parents, providing nutritional information and how to make healthy but child-friendly meals. Parents were presented with a ‘Healthy Recipes for Children’ booklet at the end of the session. The second part, attended by ten local youngsters, was aimed at the children themselves with expert advice from dieticians. Laura Turner, dietician from Wavelengths Allied Health, spoke to the children

q Charlee Hall, Helen Dykes, Cody Hall, Megan Bailey and Imogen Seale. By Keith Dykes regarding nutrition, followed by a practical cooking session. Eight different recipes were prepared and cooked, with the children then able to sample them all and take some home in a doggy bag. Tomaree Neighbourhood Centre Co-ordinator, Amy Ellis, told News Of The Area, “The program was very successful and we are looking at running other similar programs later in the year.” Local dieticians Laura Turner of Wavelengths and Mel Massey from Shoal Bay Medical Centre oversaw the recipe book and the program’s

nutritional content. One of the children, Megan Bailey, said after the workshop, “It wasn’t just cooking, it was fun.” Tomaree Neighbourhood Centre is open Monday to Friday, 10-3pm. It provides a range of community services, including acting as an information hub, provider of crisis loans, Justice of the Peace service, Broadband for Seniors and a Friendship Group. The centre staff can be contacted on 4984 6220.

The Ladies Long

I have been single for some time, in fact, my family has probably lost all hope for me. Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed my independent, please-myself lifestyle, I have opened my heart to the possibility of love and have been seeing a man for a couple of months and feel I should introduce him to my family but am very nervous about the daunting task of unleashing my family upon a very shy man. So this is our bit to try and make that a reality. It’s

Lifeline In Nelson Bay By Sarah STOKES

Dear Miss EB, WHAT are we working with here? A Brady sort of bunch or a Focker sort of family? I’m sensing, between the lines, that it is probably the latter. It is natural to feel nervous, EB. You’ve swiped right, put your best foot forward, felt the first flicker of love and all that hard work could come undone. Ease your new man into the fold one family member at a time. Start with the most impressive ones and work your way down the list. When you say “unleash”, I gather that there may be a Hannibal Lecter-type in the old gene pool. Leave Uncle Mac until the end-of-year dress-up party when gimp masks are somehow more socially acceptable. Or just tell your new man you are an orphan. He sounds like a keeper. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Mergers are a “Dog’s Breakfast”

SHADOW Minister for the Hunter Kate Washington and Shadow Minister for Local Government, Peter Primrose, have called on incoming Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Catherine Cusack to heed residents’ calls for Hunter Councils to stand alone. Council mergers were first announced over 12 months ago however a final decision has stalled, leaving Councils unable to replace outgoing staff or make significant planning decisions for their regions. Kate Washington has urged Ms Cusack to meet with the residents and businesses who will be severely impacted by a forced merger. “As the government’s Hunter representative it is vital that Ms Cusack doesn’t just meet with Councils, but also with the residents and businesses who will be negatively impacted by forced mergers,” Kate Washington MP said. there will be no more forced mergers in the bush because they’re bad for local communities. Ms Cusack says she wants them in our region because they’re good for local communities even though we don’t want them. “As the government’s Hunter representative it is vital that Ms Cusack doesn’t just meet with Councils, but also with the residents and businesses who will be negatively impacted by forced mergers.” “Regardless of whether it’s Baird or Berejiklian, the Government’s council mergers are a complete dog’s breakfast,” Peter Primrose MLC said. NSW Labor has opposed forced council mergers and proposed a mechanism for residents of merged councils to de-merge under a future Labor Government. NSW Labor continues to support voluntary mergers where residents are given a say through a plebiscite.

Kirralee Parsons, leader of PlayZone and mother to Beau, four, told News Of The Area, “Everyone is very welcome at Spectrum Playzone.” “We love meeting new people, and invite anyone to join us on Thursday and Friday mornings.” “It’s a great opportunity to meet new people in a relaxed and caring environment that is filled with fun, creativity and friendship for the kids,” she said.

Port Stephens course recognised THE Pacific Dunes Golf Club in Port Stephens is celebrating news that the course has been awarded superior rankings by two leading golf magazines. Golf Digest and Golf Australia have each released annual rankings for Australia’s top 100 golf courses and Pacific Dunes has been ranked number 26 and 54 by the respective publications. Both rankings are improvements on previous years and show Pacific Dunes to be leading the way in establishing Port Stephens as a prime golfing destination. Pacific Dunes Golf Operations General Manager Kurt Linde said his team was delighted their hard work had been rewarded and said new equipment had been bought to make the course even better. “Our greenkeepers work diligently to make Pacific Dunes

a world-class course so these rankings are a pat on the back for us but we’ve now procured new, eco-friendly, green-keeping equipment to make the course look even better and new golf carts are now also available to enhance the experience for players,” Mr Linde said. He said Pacific Dunes had hosted a string of national golf championships in 2016 and more major events would be held on the course this year and next including the Australian Police Force Championships in March, 2017, and the Australian Veterans Golf Championships in November, 2018. Pacific Dunes boasts a spectacular 18-hole championship course which winds through native woodland and wetland, and was commended by Golf Australia judges for its innovative design and well-manicured

Gonski Cuts MEMBER for Paterson Meryl Swanson has written to all schools in her electorate this week asking principals and teachers what the effects of “Gonski” cuts will meant to them. The Paterson electorate will lose $43million in Gonski funding as part of the Turnbull Government’s $30billion cut from schools over 10 years. Labor is fighting these cuts and insisting the Government deliver the full Gonski rollout. “I have no doubt the impact of these cuts will be severe, but I want to hear directly from schools what the cuts will mean for them,” Ms Swanson said. “I know several schools have used their Gonski funding for intervention programs that have led to great improvements in literacy and numeracy. “One school told me they are meeting and exceeding local and state standards because of these programs. “Properly funding our schools is critical to making sure our young people have the

skills they need to put their best foot forward, to get a job, keep a job, and become our future leaders. “As our international neighbours place ever more importance on education we need to give our children the skills and the technology they need to excel.” Gonski funding was designed to direct additional resources to areas of disadvantage to make up for historical underfunding, Ms Swanson said. After building slowly from 2014 to 2017, it was supposed to sharply increase in 2018-19. “But the Turnbull Government has put an end to that. I will not stand by while funds are cut from schools. I’m asking our schools to help me build the case for the full Gonski rollout. “I have invited teachers and parents to share with me what Gonski funding has meant for them and, importantly, what they will miss out on because of the cuts.”

THE Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour will this year celebrate a 15-year milestone, with the Melbourne Cup trophy set to visit more than 30 destinations in its annual trek across Australia and New q Victoria Racing Zealand. Club Chief Executive To ensure the Simon Love. Port Stephens community have an opportunity to secure a visit from the 18-carat gold Cup in this milestone year, the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) will open the tender process early for the 2017 Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour with submissions now being accepted. Since 2003, the Melbourne Cup has travelled more than 456,000 kilometers to rural, regional and metropolitan communities across Australia and New Zealand. “The VRC created the concept of the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour with the aim to provide communities without easy geographical access to the Melbourne Cup an opportunity to experience the magic of the trophy first-hand,” VRC Chief Executive Simon Love said. “We never dreamed that the Tour would evolve into such a significant community event, which 15 years later, continues to grow in popularity. “We are humbled by the pleasure the Cup provides to people of all ages, and want to ensure that as many communities as possible share the same unique opportunity again this year,” Mr Love said. In 2016, the $175,000 gold trophy toured 34 destinations, providing schools, councils, hospitals, aged-care facilities and racing clubs with a unique opportunity to host a day of community events and raise valuable funds for local causes. Past racing legends also accompany the Cup each year on its epic journey to recount some of the remarkable stories intrinsically linked to the ‘race that stops a nation’. The 2017 Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour welcomes submissions from community groups, councils and racing bodies in rural and regional areas as well as capital cities, with successful destinations to be announced in June. Each host destination selected makes a commitment to provide memorable and engaging community events involving the Cup for everyone to enjoy. Local fundraising initiatives will also be supported. Tenders to be submitted at melbournecuptour.com.au by 5pm (AEST) on Monday 3 April.
