Medowie Rocks By Rachael VAUGHAN A NEW nature-play community game has hit Medowie, with youngsters getting involved in a pastime encouraging kids to get outside and play. The massive game of hideand-seek using hand-painted rocks first spread throughout the United States before becoming a phenomenon in Western Australia when a mother wanted to encourage her children to engage with the great outdoors. The game has now spread to New South Wales, with the Facebook page NSW Rocks

Sports

gaining in momentum and members. The aim of the game is to paint flat rocks with bright colours, pictures or slogans and hide them in your local parks and let the online community know you have dropped some off in your area, leaving them to be found by others. The idea is that other people will then take their children to the park to find the rocks, let the online group know they have been found, then re-hide them somewhere else, the process beginning again. News Of The Are was alerted to some Medowie drop

areas, and spoke to local parents who are participating in this refreshing new game. Medowie mother Amy Lochhead told News Of The Area, “It’s been a lovely activity to do with my kids, they are having so much fun!” “We have painted a lot of rocks, and found lots too.” “It’s a great activity to encourage kids to get outside, experience nature and have lots of fun whilst doing it,” she said. To join this new activity, search for ‘NSW Rocks’ on Facebook. News Of The Area has it on very good authority that there are some very cool rocks out there in Medowie parks, just waiting to be discovered.

WHILE their opponents have been highly critical, the decision by the Labor Party to stand a ticket at the September local government elections was an easy one, according to Mayoral candidate Des Maslen. After all, the ALP has traditionally had strong support in Port Stephens and the party currently holds both the state (Kate Washington) and federal (Meryl Swanson) seats. “I make no apologies for standing under the ALP banner, as a matter of fact I am proud to do so,” said Mr Maslen. “I can’t believe people are criticising us for having the courage to say this is who we are and this is what we stand for. “We want to be the community’s voice and we espouse good governance.” The 52-year-old fatherof-three from Medowie said

he first became politically motivated nearly five years ago when the proposed Cabbage Tree sand mine came to light and this was accelerated by the RAAF base contamination scandal. Along the way Mr Maslen attended his first ever council meeting and he says it took just five minutes to convince him that he should stand for Mayor. “The meeting was a shambles to say the least,” he recalled. “I believe in giving each elected councillor the opportunity to bring their knowledge of expertise to the fore. “I have a background in engineering and marine biology, others have experience in the finance or social or community sectors … these skills should be utilised in the interests of all. “You can’t shut down debate simply because

“This is a public forum and residents should take this opportunity to meet the candidates in the forthcoming Council Election.” “It is their responsibility to understand the issues facing our Council and carefully choose the candidates that will best represent their interests, and provide consultation, transparency and accountability in the new Council.” “This is an opportunity to put that issue that you are really concerned

about, directly to the candidates,” he said. The venue will be the auditorium at the Nelson Bay Bowling Club commencing at 7pm, on Tuesday 15 August. TRRA is arranging for the proceedings to be recorded on video and posted on YouTube. All members of the public are invited. Medowie Progress Association have already hosted their candidates night first, at Medowie Community Hall on Monday.

STILL ON ELECTION

Dingle back for second tilt at mayor By Charlie ELIAS

HE is admired around Port Stephens for standing up to the voting block, he is truly independent and he has 13 years of major achievements on the Council. Geoff Dingle, who went within approximately 500 votes of ousting the Port’s first popularly elected Mayor Bruce MacKenzie in 2012, is throwing all his eggs in the one basket by nominating for just the top job. “I have decided to stand for Mayor [and not as a Councillor] because I consider myself as someone who is adequately experienced, someone who

is truly Independent and I have done the hard yards as a community worker,” the 67-year-old from Medowie said. “And I am excited that we could be seeing a clearing of the decks to allow some new faces on the next Council.” Among his many achievements on council, Mr Dingle singles out the Medowie planning strategy as his most fulfilling. “It is one of the first such strategies to be established in the state and remains a very important document in regard to the community’s needs, infrastructure, services and facilities,” he said.

STILL ON ELECTION

A critic of the leadership style of Mr MacKenzie, Mr Dingle said he would focus on consultation and communication, while improving the transparency of the Council. “I will open Council meetings, allow webcasts, improve public access and welcome more site inspections and briefings. “A Mayor’s job is to manage the meetings, not run them, and ensure that everyone is heard and there is a mutual respect between the chair, the Councillors and the public.” As for the next three years, Mr Dingle is not interested in

making promises. He said if elected Mayor he would not spend millions on building monuments but instead spend money on maintaining existing infrastructure. “We have too many projects on the table. We need to sit back and analyse our affairs, our borrowings and formulate five and 10 year plans. “Some of the best projects are the most simple and least costing ones, such as the fenced off-leash area for dogs in Medowie, which only cost $17,500. I think every community should have one.”

q Geoff Dingle is seeking Mayoral election for a second time.

Vietnam Veterans Day

By Rachael VAUGHAN ON 18 August, Vietnam Veterans Day will honour the sacrifices of servicemen and women. It commemorates the men of D Company, 6RAR who fought in the battle of Long Tan in 1966. On that day, 108 Australian and New Zealand soldiers fought a pitched battle

against over 2,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops in a rubber plantation not far from the small village of Long Tan. The Australians prevailed, but only after fighting in torrential rain for four hours. The Medowie subbranch of the RSL will be holding a commemorative service at Lions Memorial Park on Friday 18 August at

11.00am. Lions Memorial Park is located at the intersection of Medowie Road and Ferodale Road in Medowie. All members of the public wishing to pay their respects to those who served are most welcome, as are serving members of the Australian Defence Force.

q Peter Kafer is a champion of indigenous and youth issues.

‘I would lead by consensus’ A CHAMPION of indigenous and youth issues, proud Labor Party member and Independent councillor, Peter Kafer has no misgivings about standing for Mayor against the ALP. The veteran Councillor is more interested in passing on his vast knowledge and experience to the next generation. It is for this reason he has on his Council election ticket two novices not long out of school – Tarryn Roach and Alannah Newell. “They are our tomorrow. They are fantastic young people with strong leadership qualities and have a great sense of community,” Mr Kafer said. “Their integrity, respect and energy is boundless and in three years’ time they will have the experience to stand on their own and get elected.”

Mr Kafer was first elected to Newcastle Council in 1995 as a Labor Party member while residing in Stockton before moving to Raymond Terrace. He has served two terms on Port Stephens Council as an Independent, driving a number of indigenous, cultural and youth programs. A member of the Wahroonga Aboriginal Corporation, he was instrumental in bringing to the Terrace the hugely successful Nations of Origin tournament and working with local police to establish a learn-to-drive program for Aboriginal youth. “I have worked closely with police on issues such as youth and public safety, and I was the first to call for a fitness trail similar to what is being developed at Boomerang Park.” Mr Kafer, who has often butted heads with Mayor

Bruce MacKenzie and his supporters during Council meetings, says he wants to drive the Council into a new direction. “I am very concerned about environmental issues, particularly the flora and fauna, and I believe it is time we redressed the koala plan of management. “We want to be known as a tourist destination but it should not be at the cost of our environment, the two should go hand in hand. “If elected Mayor I would lead by consensus. I believe there is always a common ground which forms the basis of achieving our goals without the angst we currently see at Council meetings. “I will lead a more accessible Council and bring back webcasting, an idea I have championed from day one.”

My husband and I take turns making each other our morning hot beverage. He is a coffee drinker and I drink tea. It takes me about 45 seconds to make a cup of tea, but five minutes to make him a coffee (he insists that I use the cappuccino maker). I think, therefore, that he should make the morning drinks four times to my one, to balance it out a bit. Mrs JT, Medowie

Dear Mrs JT,

If we are going to go into a tit-for-tat war, I think you need to go into this with a little more detail. Based on your calculations, the gain made is 300 seconds minus your 45 (255 seconds), which is a fourminute advantage (give or take 25 seconds) multiplied by 365 days, which equals 1,460 minutes or 24.33 hours. Given these (probably inaccurate) calculations, your husband is actually taking one day and night from you a year. Calculate that over the number of years your relationship lasts (I’m giving you no more than five based on your question) and that is five days and nights that he owes you. Having said all of that, I think you should actually take a bit of pride in the fact that he allows you to make his coffee at all. I once went out with a man who would not let me touch his coffee-making equipment (though he was quite happy for me to touch anything else). I thought he was a barrister, but he was actually a barista, which took me a while to work out. I only discovered the truth when I asked for help for my cousin, who had committed white collar fraud. The best this man could offer was a triple macchiato with skim milk frothed into the pattern of a maple leaf. Now, regarding your dilemma, why don’t you book yourself a five-day holiday without hubby to make up for the beverage-making time difference? Load the car with a stash of Dilmah Pot Strength tea bags and drive off into the distance. You’ll feel so much better, and I reckon your long-suffering mate will be rather thrilled as well.

Carpe diem, Jasminda.

High Level Harassment HUNTER Labor MPs have pledged to work with all stakeholders to address the recommendations of the Australian Human Rights Commission’s Change the Course: National Report on Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment at Australian Universities. The report’s survey found that 55 percent of Newcastle University respondents reported experiencing sexual harassment in any location during 2016, and 30 percent of respondents reported that sexual harassment occurred in a location associated with the University. The survey also found 8 percent of UON respondents had experienced a sexual assault at any location during 2015 and/or

2016, and 1.4 percent of respondents reported that the assault occurred at a location associated with the University. “Hunter based students have taken the courageous step of sharing their experience. It is vital that we act on their experiences and address the unacceptable levels of sexual assault on campus, both in the Hunter and across NSW,” Kate Washington MP, Shadow Minister for the Hunter said. “Lack of respect for women, for people with disabilities, for people in the LGBTI community, indigenous people, and people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities doesn’t just arise in university,” Jenny Aitchison MP, Shadow Minister for the Prevention of

Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence, said. Labor has supported the survey by the Australian Human Rights Commission and taken a bipartisan approach to ensure that the voices of more than 30,000 Australian students who responded to the survey are clearly heard. Labor has also been calling on the Government to finalise the NSW Sexual Assault Strategy, particularly in ensuring more resourcing for sexual assault services, with victims of sexual assault having to wait too long for forensic examinations, as well as making public transport safer, encouraging higher reporting levels to police and developing appropriate responses to emerging issues such as “stealthing”.

at birth for the disorder, and when they were about a week old, it was discovered that one of the twins, Kobie, had XLP. A little after Kobie turned one, Kaylene and her husband discovered that the disorder had developed, and as a result he had little to no immune system. Once a week, the family go into Central Health Alliance in Williamtown, and Kobie gets his immunoglobulin transfusion through a little port in his stomach. At the age of two, Kobie

handles this all in his stride, and is mostly just excited to see his ‘favourite Paul’, Dr Paul Burford, and of course get his handful of lollies. Fortunately, there is a cure for Kobie’s disease and at some point in the coming years, he will undergo chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. Kaylene told News Of The Area, “I am so overwhelmed by the love and support myself, Kobie and our family have received from Dr Burford at Central Health Alliance.” “Not only is Paul our doctor, we consider him family.” “I have learnt so much from Kobie already, he has shown me strengths I never knew I even had,” she said. The Staader family have a long journey ahead of them, but they are confident that Kobie has shown how strong and courageous he is, and that with the continued support of their family and friends, they will be able to look back and see the fight they won with pride. “We’d like to take this opportunity to highlight the need to support causes like Genes for Jeans Day,” Kaylene said “We just never know the value of what research does until you need it for your own children.”

Genes for Jeans

By Rachael VAUGHAN

GENES for Jeans Day was celebrated in honour of a very special little boy this week at Central Health Alliance in Williamtown. When Kaylene Staader was pregnant with her twin boys, she found out that she was a carrier for a genetic disorder X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome (XLP). She was told there was a 50 percent chance, she would pass it onto one or both of her boys. The twins were tested

Mainly Music

By Geoff WALKER

‘WHERE Music Makes Memories’ is the catch cry of the Mainly Music people who gather at the Anglican Church Mallabula each Thursday morning at 10am. Commencing in 1990, the group provides interactive educational experiences

between carers and preschool children. It starts with a 30 minute music session followed by a ‘little lunch’ for the children and morning tea for the carers. $5 covers the cost. The children can then play together in cubby houses, tents and with child-friendly toys under supervision.

It’s just a matter of turning up on the day at the church grounds which are located in Strathmore Road, Mallabula. Supervisor Lynley Keers said that both the carers and toddlers benefited from the experience. “The vital skills of social interaction are very important,” she said. “Our small group is looking for some new faces. Why not come along?”

STILL ON ELECTION

Ex-Lib shows his hand By Charlie ELIAS

q Ryan Palmer outside his office in Donald Street, Nelson Bay.

Fresh face on the scene

By Charlie ELIAS

FRESH is a word you will often hear when talking to the youngest of the Port Stephens mayoral candidates, Ryan Palmer, about his inaugural foray into Local Government. At just 30 years of age, the hard working president of the Tomaree Business Chamber and convenor of Nelson Bay Now is throwing all his exuberant energy, backed by a massive advertising campaign, into his candidacy. “The council needs a fresh start and I am standing for a strong, fresh, ethical future for Port Stephens,” the Independent candidate said. “If I am elected Mayor I vow to begin working for this

area from day one, regardless of the make-up of the Council and regardless of which political party they stand for. “My aim is to set a solid agenda, engage with the community at every opportunity and be more open and transparent in our dealings. That includes live streaming of all Council meetings.” A former touring tennis professional with a strong background in the financial sector, Mr Palmer has released a four-point plan for voters to consider. They include: Invest in the Port’s CBD, businesses and economic future by revitalising Nelson Bay through infrastructure investment and

increased parking. Invest in the Port’s roads, paths, parks and community facilities with new connections to schools and bus stops, while improving the area’s sporting facilities in order to attract more major events. Increase investment in social, health and youth community programs to help fight domestic violence and support the most vulnerable, the youth, the disadvantaged, and those affected by mental health issues. Finally, to retain Port Stephens as a stand alone Council. Mr Palmer, who has spent all his life in Port Stephens and is married with two children, has opened an office in Donald Street, Nelson Bay.

STEVE Tucker, who quit the Liberal Party 12 months ago because of the loss to the region of tens of thousands of jobs and the botched Council amalgamation legislation, says he could provide the steady hand to lead the Council into a new era. The 63-year-old from Tanilba Bay was first elected to Council in 2004 and says he can provide the firm hand needed to bring councillors in line. “Because of the shenanigans over the past five years, the council has not been able to achieve what it has set out to do,” Mr Tucker, a Central Ward councillor, said. “I have the expertise and the corporate knowledge to ensure every councillor is given a fair opportunity to show their abilities and play their part. “I consider myself to be a hands-on person, I like to lead by example … it is something that I have done throughout my career in IT.” With an honours degree

q Steve Tucker at the Lemon Tree Passage foreshore. in metallurgy and a masters in engineering, the recently retired Mr Tucker says he now has more time to devote to his Local Government duties. “I am quite proud of the list of achievements on Council, particularly the improvements to the Lemon Tree Passage foreshore, new fire stations at Tanilba Bay, Salt Ash and Anna Bay and work with men’s sheds, surf clubs, Medowie Sport & Recreation club and roads. “For the future I would like to help establish a cultural centre in Raymond Terrace, plan town squares in both

the Terrace and Tanilba Bay, a ferry service from Lemon Tree to Nelson Bay and rail link from the airport to Hexham.” Mr Tucker said he would look forward to seeing some new faces on the Council, but warned newcomers of being overzealous. “We have heard from some of them already … they can talk the talk, but let’s see if they can walk the walk.” Mr Tucker, married with three children, has on his councillor ticket Medowie’s Ben Niland as his number two and Medowie businessman John Robinson number three.

Dingle, who has worked with the Medowie school students in their vegetable garden for the past four years, liaised with the school and Medowie Tidy Towns to organise for the students to plant over 100 trees and shrubs at the Tallowood duck pond. Geoff told News Of The Area, “We explained to the students how to prepare the ground, how to fertilise and how to retain water after the trees have been planted.” “I was so impressed with the student’s efforts, that we’d be happy for them to assist the Tidy Towns group at all our working bees.” “We live in such a beautiful community, it’s nice to see us all working

together to ensure this continues,” he said. The National Tree Planting day is a Planet Ark initiative, that is in its 22nd year. The event encourages planting trees to support the natural environment and spending time in nature with family, friends, neighbours and colleagues. Planet Ark estimates over 250,000 people took part in this year’s event at over 3000 planting sites. Councils, schools and community groups across the country planted closed to one million native trees, shrubs and edibles to help beautify their local communities.

Trees for Tallowood

By Rachael VAUGHAN

MEDOWIE Public School students were invited by our Tidy Towns Committee to participate in the National Tree Planting day efforts in Medowie this week. The Tidy Towns group, who are currently working on a number of Medowie projects, invited the students to join them at the Tallowood ponds cycleway and duck pond on Tallowood Drive to start the revegetation process along the cycleway and property boundaries. The Tidy Towns group provided the plants, predug the holes and then supervised the students. Councillor Geoff

The only female Mayoral Candidate

By Charlie ELIAS HAVING served for 13 years as a Councillor, including six as Deputy Mayor, the most senior and only woman to contest the Port Stephens Mayoral race, Sally Dover, says she is ready to lead. For the 78-year-old Salamander Bay great grandmother, the Mayoral Election is more about continuing to build on the economic achievements of

the previous councils. “Yes we do need more sanity in our Council meetings, and I have both the experience and compassion to ensure I lead a more cohesive Council,” Mrs Dover said. “I will not be intimidated and I will stamp out bad language during the meetings. “My mantra will be to respect and honour one another.” Mrs Dover said she

Education Week Celebrates Public Schooling By Heather SHARP

SCHOOLS across New South Wales celebrated public education in the annual Education Week. Held from 31 July to 4 August, this year’s theme was ‘I learn, we learn’. Port Stephens schools celebrated the week through a series of in-school and public events. One of the highlights of the week was a series of performances by local primary and high schools at Marketplace, Raymond Terrace. The schools, through dance performances, music, and showcasing work, demonstrated to the

local community the great achievements of public schools. Wirreanda Public School opened the doors to parents to see how the classrooms work, planted trees, and hosted a family picnic with performances from the ukulele group, drum corps, and dancers. On Tuesday night, along with other schools including Irrawang High, they also performed at the evening Showcase. The week capped off with fundraising for Jeans for Genes Day. Salt Ash Primary School combined NAIDOC Week

Aussie Hero Quilt

By Heather SHARP ANZAC Day is not the only time fellow Australians support and recognise the men and women serving in the Army, Navy, and Airforce. Quilters all over the nation regularly sew quilts— for no charge and frequently for no recognition either— for men and women serving in the Australian Defence Forces.

Aussie Hero Quilts is an organisation run by Mrs JanMaree Ball OAM. Established in 2012, she organises quilts for Defence members, usually those on deployment, as a comfort and thank you to those serving. Last week, Mrs Ball made a visit to the RAAF Base Williamtown to present a quilt to Air Commodore Michael Kitcher. He recently returned to the Base after serving as

and Education Week for a celebration extravaganza. This included awards given out at a special assembly and cultural events throughout the week. Medowie Public School held a Love Of Learning assembly as their culminating Education Week activity. The assembly recognised students from each stage who show a love of learning and it also showcased students’ performances. Education Week is an initiative of the Department of Education and this year there was a stated commitment to system wide improvement; high expectations for all; personalised student learning; wellbeing; and creating stronger ties with local communities.

Commander of the Air Task Group in the Middle East. Mrs Ball told News Of The Area, “I had arranged a quilt for him but had not been able to organise to get it to him whilst he was deployed.” “Given I was in the area, I took the opportunity to present the quilt to him in person.” “He was surprised but also delighted with the quilt made by one of our volunteers, Lynn, and quilted by another volunteer, Bridget.” The idea of making personalised quilts for serving men and women came about because Mrs Ball wanted to do something to support the troops and to make sure they felt supported, something she feels has not always happened in Australia’s history. So far this year, Aussie Hero Quilts have sent 1108 quilts to serving members, a total of 7751 quilts since it started in 2012. Not a mean feat for an organisation run and staffed entirely by volunteers. Aussie Hero Quilts also makes laundry bags for serving members. When asked why, Mrs Ball said, “They are issued with white, blue, or green laundry bags and the only way to tell one from the other is by hand written initials in black marker pen.” “Apparently bags go missing a lot as people collect the wrong bag in error.” The laundry bags made by the volunteers are all different, thereby making identification easier. More information about this organisation can be found at: aussieheroquilts.blogspot. com.au.

medowie@newsofthearea.com.au felt disillusioned that some of the infighting among predominantly a couple of Councillors had overshadowed the excellent economic results during her time on Council. “In the past two terms of Council (nine years) we have managed to turn an $11 million debt into a $1.2 million surplus,” she said. “In addition this Council since 2012 has reduced the infrastructure gap from $29 million down to $18 million. “We have fabulous Council staff and this Council has won many awards, including the Council Employer of the

Year for 2016… you don’t get that by being dysfunctional.” A longtime member of Tomaree Youth Community Action, the Rock Church and the Graffiti Action team, Mrs Dover said she aimed to continue to build partnerships with community groups on improving footpaths, cycleways and parks. Her other goals include planning and funding of the Fingal Bay link road and ensuring the council’s future financial sustainability. A Liberal Party member since 2004, Mrs Dover will stand as an Independent.

Sisterhood helps women in need

LADIES in Port Stephens take wearing a bra for granted. Local businesswoman Anita Marshall discovered on a trip to Vanuatu, that the islander ladies wanted bras, and so the Sisterhood of Baskets Belong Titties endeavour started. Basket Belong Titties translates to bra in the local Ni-Van language. Anita networks on social media for bra donations. Generous locals travelling to Vanuatu and Fiji fill their baggage allowance with the bras and deliver them to women in need. Bras have been sent to a Northern Territory

mission who put a call out for women’s clothing. The endeavour has sent several thousand bras to women who don’t have access to bras or simply can’t afford them. Over 100 people have donated to the program, mostly from Port Stephens and Newcastle. The good work saw Anita recognised in a recent edition of MPA Magazine (Mortgage Professionals Australia). Anita Marshall told News Of The Area, “I started this because I was shocked that most of the women in the South Pacific cannot afford a bra.” “For most women there the cost of a bra is around two weeks’ wages, and they have far greater priorities

than buying a bra so they go without.” “I wanted to make a difference in the lives of these wonderful women who have so little and appreciate absolutely anything you do for them.” In Australia we are very blessed and often take so much for granted, it’s nice to give back and make a difference,” she said. Anita Marshall is active in the local bay business community, and is involved in a wide range of charitable work including being fundraising coordinator for the Port Stephens Koalas. World Scout Scarf Day Ground Breaking By Rachael VAUGHAN

SOME of Medowie’s Scouts participated in a special day this week, as a mark of respect to a former fellow Scout, by wearing their scout scarf to school. World Scout Scarf Day is a day that past and present members of the Scouting Association wear their scarves to school or work to represent the first ever Scout camp held by Lord Baden Powell at Brownsea Island 110 years ago. Members of the 1st

Medowie Scout group who attend Wirreanda Public School accessorised their school uniform for one special day, and wore their Scout scarves to school to commemorate the day, and to also raise the profile of Scouts in the area. Dennis Conroy, the District Scout Leader for Port Stephens, told News Of The Area, “I was impressed with how many current members took part in the Port Stephens area.” “It’s great to see our young members wanting

to celebrate Scouts, and encourage their school friends to give it a go.” If you’d like to give Scouts a try, the 1st Medowie Scout Group hold their meetings at the Medowie community hall. Scouts meet on a Tuesday night at 6:30 -8:30, Joeys on a Wednesday night 6-7pm, and Cubs on Wednesday 6-7:30pm. Interested people are welcome to come along to the hall, introduce themselves and see what Scouts has to offer. oto Ph ery Gall ne Onli

Christmas In July Gardeners THE Christmas spirit was alive and well around town recently, with Medowie Garden Club holding their annual Christmas in July at the Medowie Community Centre. The day was attended by 25 members and three guests and included a cut flower competition, a great lucky door prize, a pictorial presentation on the flora and fauna of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia, an amazing meal and lots of great conversation. Although beautiful cut flowers may not be very plentiful at this time of year, members managed to fill three tables with a wide variety of blooms ranging from kangaroo paws to orchids. Winners were decided by popular vote and were Wendy Petersen, Jenny Budden and Jean Lawrence. The lucky door prize of a rustic birdhouse made at the Terrace Men’s Shed was won by Mary Pitt. The delicious two course luncheon was again provided by members with dishes ranging from warming soups

to salads, meat dishes, pasta and lovely desserts. The Club AGM was held in early July with the President, Vice President, Ssecretary and Treasurer elected for 2017/2018 being Warwick (Rick) Porter, Megan Power, Chris Voigt and Fran Easter

respectively. Residents in Medowie and surrounding areas interested in gardens and gardening should consider attending meetings of the Medowie Garden Club, which are held on the first Saturday each month at a member’s

THE ground has been broken, the soil has been turned, and Medowie Sports & Community Club is now one step closer. News Of The Area met with some of the steering committee last week at the Ferodale site of this future community asset. Councillor Chris Doohan, Deputy Mayor of Port Stephens Council, and a member of the club steering committee said, “I am ecstatic that there is action on the site of the future Medowie Sports & Community Club on Ferodale Road.” “I have been leading, advising, supporting and contributing to this committee for over eight years, with lots of hours spent researching, planning, debating and executing our plan that is now showing signs of real action.” “I couldn’t be prouder right now, and I hope this club will be the future hub for our community,” he said. The club came before council again last week during their last session, with a Section 96 Development Application. The application asked council to approve the amendments made to the original approved recreation facility. The Section 96 application to modify the development was accepted by the elected council, as one of their last votes in this sitting council. The successful residence. Wild Dog Control 1080 Baiting The NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) and MidCoast Council (MCC) in cooperation with local neighbours, NSW Forestry Corp and the Hunter Local Land Services will be undertaking 1080 ground baiting for wild dog control within Myall Lakes National Park, Ghin-doo-ee National Park, Bulahdelah Plain Wetland Council Reserve (Lot 601 DP1171576 Pacific Highway, Bulahdelah) and 334-ha of private conservation lands on Myall River Road and Burdekins Road, Bulahdelah. Baiting will commence on Monday 14 August 2017 and cease by Friday 29 September 2017. This baiting program is being carried out as part of a broader control program coordinated by the Hunter Local Land Services to mitigate the impacts of wild dogs on stock and wildlife. Domestic pets are not permitted in Nature Reserves, National Parks or State Conservation Areas. Neighbours and reserve users are reminded that 1080 baits are lethal to domestic pets. We suggest that pets and working dogs be restrained to ensure that they do not enter the baiting location during poisoning operations or to muzzle dogs if they are required to work the baiting location during and after poisoning. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance. No baits will be placed within 150 metres of residences. All areas will have 1080 baiting signs erected at access points to where baiting is being undertaken. For further information please contact NPWS Great Lakes Area office on (02) 6591 0300, Mid Coast Council on (02) 6591 7222 or the Hunter Local Land Services on 1300 795 299. c

Marine Rescue flotilla and the Tilligerry Rural Fire Service. A spokesperson said that a $1000 cheque was always handed over to the local volunteers. “If there is any shortfall

we top it up from our own funds,” she said. “We get terrific support from the three local butchers who donate the sausages for our barbecue lunch and other businesses kick in with prizes for our raffles and

tombola as well,” she added. The Bowling Club (now renamed Club Lemon Tree) has always put a lot back into Tilligerry. President Kevin Colman OAM told News Of The Area, “This year we have ploughed

some $40,000 back into local community groups.” “The Junior Soccer; the Rugby League Club; the Cricket Club; our Art group; the Literature Award and the Lions Club are just a few that come to mind,” he said.
