The week-long event involved an interview portion, photos shoots, swimwear judging, fashion wear parade, evening parade, rehearsals and Eco party. Emilie shared her excitement with News Of The Area saying, “I had the best week at the competition with my family all there for support, including my two little girls.” “I’ve been trying to describe the week to everybody and I say to them, as a mum you really lose yourself in the role, so this pageant journey has really brought me out my shell.” “I seriously had the best time, it was so much fun, even more than I could possibly have imagined,” Mrs Hardes said. Mr Doohan made it his mission to liaise and campaign through Port Stephens Council to make sure the footpath ramps became a reality. The completed ramps were share funded through RMS Active Transport Program. This grant is designed for Roads and Maritime Services to partner with Local Government to plan and deliver infrastructure projects and walking and cycling programs. Each ramp costs approximately $4000. Each ramp is different, requiring different lengths of connecting paths, tree pruning or removal and service adjustments. Council workers installed a majority of the ramps, but also used contractors when needed. The ramps were installed at a cost of $160,000. In addition a new pedestrian refuge on Kindlebark Drive adjacent to the preschool was included in the project. Mr Doohan told News Of The Area, “It’s great to have a project like this completed, as it not only services those in wheelchairs and mobility scooters, it is a welcome

Residents remain dissatisfied By Heather SHARP
D I S S AT I S FA C T I O N remains for many of the residents impacted by the Williamtown RAAF Base firefighting contamination scandal. This was evident at the Community Walk-in Session held at the Murrook Cultural Centre on Thursday, 6 April. The Department of Defence joined with the Commonwealth Department of Health and Food Standards Australia and New Zealand to provide an update to residents on current investigations looking into environmental factors of the contamination. Attending was Meryl Swanson Member for Paterson who spoke to News Of The Area saying, “The Prime Minister needs to come here.” “He went to Queensland for the natural disaster and that’s great, well this is a man-made disaster.”
“If ever there was a time for leadership from the Prime Minister, it’s now, it’s here.” “This is no less of a disaster than the floods in Queensland.” Also in attendance was Banksia Grove Resident, Ms Judith Tyler who told News Of The Area that the ongoing contamination issues means that, “We have lost value on our relocatables, it’s really devalued them.” “Some of the residents who have lived here for a long time have been watering their garden with the water and eating their vegetables using bore water on the site, they are concerned.” Speaking at the community forum was Dr Tony Hobbs, Doctor of the Commonwealth and Mr Steve Grzeskowiak, Deputy Secretary Defence. The angst that the residents expressed at the meeting primarily revolved around matters of health, but lifestyle factors were also of significant concern with
residents. Of eating fruit and vegetables, eggs from poultry that had been drinking contaminated water, and eating beef, Mr Grzeskowiak advised residents not to do so saying, “There is a possibility they are in the upper exposure level.” Dr Hobbs gave advice about the impact of PFAS, per- and poly-fluorinated alkyl substances, the group of artificial chemicals used in household and industrial products, including in firefighting. In addition to the public presentation, individual consultations were also held for residents with concerns. With no timeline yet for residents on when a concrete resolution to the issues will be announced, residents continue to live in an unstable environment with their futures uncertain.

q Patrick Byron and Jenny Battrick want to work with Port Stephens residents to bring about change. By Rachael VAUGHAN PORT Stephens. It’s time. This is the message that prospective Central Ward councillors, Mr Patrick Byron and Ms Jenny Battrick, want you to remember. Both long-term locals, they are running as a team in Central Ward to make a difference for Port Stephens residents. The two candidates are committed to community involvement having both been Wirreanda P&C Presidents and involved in the local Soccer club. Mr Byron is on the community pre-school committee, Medowie Sports Council, and was elected as a torch runner in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Ms Battrick is a community nurse and the
only female founding and honorary member of the Tilligerry Men’s Shed. Ms Battrick spoke with News Of The Area about their vision saying, “It’s time for new energy, a strong vision for community and a plan for longevity, with both short and long term goals past that initial four year term.” Mr Byron told News Of The Area, “The community need people elected to be able to relate to, we are family and community minded people.” “There is no room for politics in local government.” “We want people to be able to engage and approach us on a personal basis, not just a ‘like’ on a post on social media.” Both aim for their campaign to be about respect. Ms Battrick said, “Council comprises many

PORT Stephens Council has been announced the winner of the NSW Local Government Excellence Awards in the Community Partnerships and Collaboration category for councils with a population over 15,000. Port Stephens competed with five other councils and six other projects.
The award acknowledged the declaration of Soldiers Point as an Aboriginal Place in June 2016, a process that resulted in the understanding of the nonaboriginal community about what aboriginal places are and what it means to manage them. Port Stephens General Manager, Wayne Wallis,

highlighted that the declaration of Soldiers Point as an Aboriginal Place ended 35 years of estrangement. “We’re very proud of the award and we’re very proud of the relationship we have with the Worimi,” he said. In the last five years, the aboriginal community and the non-aboriginal community were able to
work out a way to manage the cultural values in what is a highly developed, modern landscape. Council now has a clear process of ensuring that Aboriginal cultural values are at the forefront of every decision made at Soldiers Point. Local Government Excellence Awards recognise
and showcase the pinnacle of excellence in the local government sector in NSW and significant achievements by NSW as well as the outstanding professional development achievements. The Awards night gathered 300 local government professionals in the Ivy Ballroom, Sydney.
THE News Of The Area Rescue Pet of the week this time comes to us from the wonderful volunteer workers at Dog Rescue Newcastle. Ms Ashleigh Foyster from Dog Rescue Newcastle told News Of The Area, “Dog Rescue Newcastle is a group of volunteers dedicated to the rescue of abandoned, neglected or abused companion animals.” “We rescue dogs and cats from death row at local pounds and put them into loving foster homes until we can find permanent homes for them.” Introducing this week’s rescue pet, Oliver us a six month old Mastiff x male puppy. Ollie is a sweet natured dog who has survived the odds of contracting the Parvovirus after being abandoned unvaccinated at the pound. Oliver is one of four mastiff x pups looking for
their forever homes, with others Bruno, Chelsea, and Brax also looking for an adopted family. The litter of pups were surrendered along with their mother to a local pound. Unfortunately, as happens with many unvaccinated dogs, they contracted the deadly parvovirus and required thousands of dollars’ worth of life saving treatment. Through tireless efforts, the pups are now happy, healthy and have all had their first vaccines and been medically cleared for adoption. Ollie has been in foster care with another dog, a cat, and small children who he loves to play with. Ollie has started his basic training but will need his new family to continue training him. Oliver seeks out pats and cuddles and is eager to please. Oliver wants a family of his own to walk, play, and love him. For more information
or to meet Oliver, please contact his foster carer Shannon by emailing shanchan2000@yahoo. com.au with a completed adoption questionnaire from this link: http://
www.dogrescuenewcastle. c o m . a u / a d o p t / adoptionquestionnaire.pdf. Oliver is located in Morisset. Oliver’s adoption fee is $500, which includes
desexing, vaccinations and microchipping, flea and worm treatment. All available dogs can be viewed at www. dogrescuenewcastle.com.au.
THE Lower Hunter Draft Bush Fire Risk Management Plan is now on exhibition. “This is an important document that aims to protect our community and assets,” Glenn Wall, Chairperson of the Lower Hunter BFMC said. “Everyone should take the opportunity to have a look at the plan to ensure that their views are addressed.” Your comments are invited on the Lower Hunter Draft Bush Fire Risk
Management Plan, now on public exhibition at the Dungog and Port Stephens Council Chambers and Lower Hunter NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) Fire Control Centre. A Bush Fire Risk Management Plan (BFRMP) is a comprehensive document that maps and describes the level of bush fire risk across an area and the proposed treatments to minimise and mitigate the risk.
The Lower Hunter BFRMP has recently been reviewed. Lower Hunter Bush Fire Management Committee invites the people of Dungog and Port Stephens to view the Draft Bush Fire Risk Management Plan and make comments by Sunday 7 May 2017. The plan identifies bush fire issues, identifies assets at risk, assesses the level of risk, and establishes treatment strategies to
minimise the risk and who is responsible for carrying out the treatments identified. These treatment strategies may directly affect you and your property. The Draft BFRMP is on display at the following locations: Port Stephens Council – 116 Adele Street Raymond Terrace Dungog Council – 198 Dowling Street Dungog Lower Hunter Fire

Focus on Koalas ‘Koala Awareness Day’ - Tomaree Peninsula Urban Koala Corridor Enhancement Planting Project. the Tomaree Peninsula.
By Geoff WALKER
QUITE by chance, two koala caring groups met up recently outside Tanilba Bay Public School. Les Snedden, PSSC Natural Resources Coordinator said that Council staff in tandem with National Parks Discovery Rangers were there to conduct a ‘koala awareness day’. This was part of the Tomaree Peninsula Urban Koala Corridor Enhancement Planting Project. This initiative is funded under the umbrella of the NSW State Government’s Environmental Trust and the team will visit six schools on
They came replete with a kit which included a stuffed koala, a bunch of fresh koala-friendly leaves and information about the koalas’ habitat and their life cycle. The other group in town was the Green Army, regular visitors, who focus on maintaining koala habitat by the removal of weeds and linking koala communities by planting corridors of koala food trees. Landlocked koalas in Tilligerry face a bleak future with two being killed in Mallabula alone recently. On top of this, their three big threats: traffic, dogs and bushfires, are increasing all the time.

Two charged with Armed Robbery ADDITIONAL two men charged over Hunter armed robbery – SCC Robbery & Serious Crime Squad Monday, 10 April 2017 10:00:24 AM Two men have been charged over an armed robbery in the Hunter region earlier this year. Dear Jasminda,
I bought a $1000 Dalmatian a year ago and he was an attentive puppy, but now he is fully grown, he has been spending more time at the neighbour’s house than mine. Yesterday I found him on her balcony and he acted as though he didn’t even know who I was. I don’t know what to do. The neighbour isn’t helping matters. She just says he seems happier with her. Mr JM, Tea Gardens
Stephens and Central Hunter Local Area Commands, to investigate a series of armed robberies in the area. Two men – aged 18 and 30 – have previously been charged by strike force detectives. As part of ongoing investigations, police from Port Stephens Local Area Command attended a home on Cook Street, Raymond Terrace, about 1.45pm on Saturday (8 April 2017), where they located a 21-yearold man hiding under a bed.
Answering the call By Geoff WALKER
WITH the record floods inundating the northern river town of Lismore, local volunteers answered the call. Joe Zezeran, Bruce Mc Grath, Clay Niki and Scott
Hamilton drove a Tilligerry RFS tanker to the scene of devastation, rolled up their sleeves and got stuck into the big clean-up. They were part of a task force of five tankers from the Lower Hunter which
He was arrested and taken to Raymond Terrace Station, where he was charged with robbery whilst armed with a dangerous weapon, and possess prohibited drug. Police will allege the charge relates to the armed robbery of a fast food restaurant at Williamtown on Wednesday 25 January 2017. Following further inquiries, strike force investigators arrested a 32-year-old man at a motel on the Pacific Highway,
Heatherbrae, about 10.30pm. He was taken to Raymond Terrace Station and charged with robbery whilst armed with a dangerous weapon. Both men were refused bail and appeared at Newcastle Local Court yesterday (Sunday 9 April 2017), where they were formally refused bail to appear at the same court later today (Monday 10 April 2017).
travelled in convoy to the disaster zone. So what did they do? According to Joe, most of their work was clearing damaged household goods from properties and stacking in on nature strips for removal. They also cleared mud from school classrooms and washed down furniture.
Around 500 emergency service personnel (mainly from the RFS)were in attendance with some coming from as far afield as South Australia. The four man team has now returned home and has been replaced by the trio of George Brandemberg (captain) Kevin Janses and Garth Paynne.
Dear Mr JM, I fear that your dear neighbour (I am picturing an elderly lady with a delicate cardigan and sensible shoes) is actually a sinister captor. She has been grooming Darrel the Dalmatian with pig ears and liver bites and bowls of cream since he was a pup. The minute you turn your head, she tempts him to cross over to the dark side. She is the one who showed him the hole in the camellia bush that is now an escape tunnel. She also taught him to bark incessantly whenever you try to watch the tennis. Now the poor dog is a hostage and, worse, he has formed a damaging psychological attachment to the woman, that menacing wolf in sheep’s clothing and orthopaedic shoes. Poor Darrel has Stockholm Syndrome and I fear that your only solution is to kidnap him back and then take him on a long drive to Byron Bay. The two of you can book into some therapy and doggie yoga (which they are sure to have in Byron). I’m guessing if you can afford a $1000 pet, you’re not short of a quid. Let me know how it goes, BM. I’m here for you. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

PORT Stephens Power Junior Australian Football Club have kicked off their 2017 season, with their first two rounds for the season at their home ground on Ferodale Oval.
