Wishing for a Safe Christmas THE countdown to Santa’s arrival is now on and communities around the region are getting into the festive spirit. But with additional traffic on the roads, officers are urging all drivers to slow down to ensure a jolly season for all. “We want to see people enjoying Christmas and the festive season, but that doesn’t mean putting yourself in danger,” they said. “Take extra care on the roads, be patient and most importantly stay sober, stay alert and safe.” Police also encourage everyone to be aware of their personal property and not let thieves take the jingle out of Christmas. “Unfortunately, thieves

It also shared Medowie crime statistics from the police representatives, and some positive information about the group’s quest to purchase a set of community security cameras. More details on these cameras will be provided in the new year, when the neighbourhood watch group is hoping to launch the camera system, which will be free to hire for Medowie residents.
Christmas is almost here and for many, this means time away on a much needed holiday or break with family and friends. Medowie Neighbourhood Watch this month discussed some ways to make sure that your home is exactly how you left it when you come home. Here are a few tips to help keep your house safe and secure while you are away. Get your friends or neighbours to put your bins out for collection and to use them for some of their own rubbish. Ronald McDonald House breakfast
By Rachael VAUGHAN A GROUP of volunteers took part in a very special breakfast recently, for some very deserving families. Staff from Medowie Munchkins Creche and Plus Fitness took part in the ‘Meals From The Heart’ program run through Ronald McDonald House in New Lambton. The volunteers got together to cook breakfast for forty people staying at the house, giving them a small helping hand to take pressure off their medical journeys with their children. The Ronald McDonald House caters to families who have children undergoing treatment at the John Hunter
Children’s Hospital to stay with them. Our Medowie team of volunteers cooked a delicious feast for the families, consisting of bacon, eggs, rolls, hash browns, fruit salad, yoghurt and Juice. The team also made slices to be left in the fridge as snacks for the families. Tammy Procter from Munchkins Creche told News Of The Area, “We had so much fun, and will definitely be back to do it again!” “Big thanks to Medowie Meats for supplying the bacon, Sportz Cafe for supplying the fruit salad and Coles Medowie for providing a $50 voucher to buy everything else.”
The team were also given a tour of the facility, which includes seventeen ensuite rooms and four separate suites for families with low immunity, communal kitchen, laundry room, two play areas, and a large outdoor area with barbecue, where the team provided their breakfast. Tammy said, “They unfortunately have to turn an average of thirty people a week away, so they have plans and dreams of extending their facility soon.” If your community group would like to volunteer your time like these two groups have done, you can contact Newcastle Ronald McDonald House on (02) 49214733.

Farewell to Barrie TO tell it how it is, Barrie Chapman is simply a legend at Tilligerry Habitat. Born in the Sydney suburb of Ultimo in 1927, Barrie grew up in Sydney and lived there with his wife, working as a long-distance truck driver delivering prefabricated school buildings, among other jobs, until retiring in 1995. Two years later, in 1997, the Chapmans decided to leave the big smoke behind and made the sea change to Mallabula making the Tilligerry Peninsula their new home. Unfortunately, some time later, Barrie’s beloved wife passed away. It was at this time that Barrie started to volunteer at Tilligerry Habitat. Volunteering kept Barrie busy, which is the way he liked it, as well as help to keep his mind active. At this time, it is fair to say that Barrie helped Tilligerry Habitat as much Tilligerry Habitat helped Barrie. “Barrie of all Trades” as he came to be known threw himself into anything and everything to help make Tilligerry Habitat the wonderful place that it is today. It didn’t matter if a much needed structure was being

The two have formed a strong bond. built or whether the many gardens needed a little TLC, or some seedlings needed help, Barrie was in the thick of the action. However, all good things must come to an end and, unfortunately, Barrie has decided his time has come to retire from volunteer work at Tilligerry Habitat. At the end of last week, Barrie said goodbye to the
place that helped him heal after his wife’s passing and also the place that kept him active. But don’t worry, this is a happy ending. Barrie is moving to the beautiful Hunter Valley town of Merriwa to live with his son and daughter-in-law as well as their dog, Matey. No doubt, Barrie and Matey will forge a beautiful friendship, if they haven’t already. And his son and daughterin-law may well have the best gardens in the town before long. Barrie wouldn’t have it any other way. So, we say goodbye and good luck to you, Barrie. The Tilligerry Peninsula will miss you.

Miss KN, Raymond Terrace Dear Miss KN, I BLAME this pressing problem on the DIY generation. Everything changed when reality TV came into our lives. Suddenly we are all experts in trades that should take many years of on-the-job training and accredited qualifications. Now, men and women of the suburbs reckon they can build a state-of-the-art cubby house in two hours with three pallets, a roll of hessian and a staple gun. It gets worse, of course. Every Jack and Jill from the Terrace to Bulahdelah thinks they can buy a run-down shack and ‘flip it’ in five weeks in order to gain a cool $200,00. Women are getting their hair cut into stylish bobs and they are feigning Canadian accents saying things like, “That paint really makes the room pop!” In the grand scheme of things, your mum’s foray into homemade Christmas decorations is pretty tame, though I do know how embarrassing it is when the guy at Bunnings asks your mum to produce identification because she’s buying up all the gold and silver spray cans like a cross between one of the local ‘boys in da hood’ and Glenda the good witch. The only other positive I can see is that the money she saves will be usefully redirected towards your Christmas gifts. Aaaargh . . . I just had a terrible thought. Maybe she is making those as well. Just imagine when you open your gifts this year. You’ll receive a crocheted IPhone case (how cool), a pair of bedazzled denim shorts (fashion disasters always return if you wait long enough), and maybe you’ll even score a fancy new piece of contemporary art constructed from melted down forks, welded coathangers and pieces of silver-sprayed fishing line (what’s not to love?). I hope you survive the festive season, Miss KN. I’ll be thinking of you while I pop a few rum balls. Carpe diem, Jasminda

Scouts site a popular location By Geoff WALKER TILLIGERRY Scouts backyard is gaining in popularity as a camping venue. Some time back it became something of a ‘Tent City’ as scouting groups merged there for a weekend of outdoor activities. It came alive again recently as Lake Macquarie Ramblers rocked into town with their motor homes for a weekend. “Why the scouts’ site?” This is what we asked
the group as it relaxed in the newly constructed outdoor shed. The group was of the general opinion that they preferred non commercial venues such as caravan parks as they could cluster together and not be limited by endless regulations. President Steve Basey puts it this way, “We have been going for some 30 years and our reputation is everything to us.” “We are completely self contained and take away everything we bring.” “In fact, we make a point of leaving each venue we visit better than when we arrived. “At Tanilba we raked up leaves
q Secretary Margaret Walker and President Steve Bazey setting up camp at Tanilba Bay.
and branches and picked up anything left around the property,” he said. “On top of this, local businesses do very well out of us. The ‘Op’ shops are popular with the ladies and we eat out at local clubs and restaurants. I estimate that we would spend well over $1000 on our weekend in Tilligerry,” he added. The ‘Ramblers’ keep their destination points limited to about a 50km radius from their home base and are affiliated with a broader motor home group if individual members wish to spread their wings. Recent destinations have been Dooralong and Broke.
Sheer Grit Returns
By Geoff WALKER THE popularity of Arthur Murdoch’s classic book ‘Sheer Grit’ was such that original copies sell for around $200. Even the second edition, hardcover copies, go for well over $100. But, dear reader, we are getting ahead of ourselves so it’s perhaps best to wind back the clock to the Great Depression years of the 1930s to begin our tale. Arthur Murdock was a working class man who decided to carve out a living by mining shell grit from the shoreline and holes around the Island at Fingal Bay. In those times, people kept poultry in the backyard. They [the chooks] needed shell grit in their diet to help grind up the food and to provide calcium for the eggshells. Hardware and produce merchants sold it by the bag and Arthur supplied them. Arthur’s story is a marvel of descriptive prose for a person of scant education. His narrative could very well rival that of A B Facey’s blockbuster ‘A Fortunate Life’ which ended up as a school textbook and a film.
q
‘Sheer Grit’....third edition now available.
Murdoch paints a broad picture of life in those times. He describes the village of Nelson Bay, the fisherman, how he constructed his hut and jetty and rowed and towed his grit up Tilligerry Creek. The lonely lighthouse keepers get a mention as do the swarms of mosquitoes and the dangerous shifting sands of the spit which joined
the Island to the mainland. The second edition of ‘Sheer Grit’ (2000 copies) was published by Blue Cow Press in Nelson Bay and sold out. It is now back in print in soft cover and is available for a mere $20 at Tanilba Newsagency (that NOTA know of) and no doubt other outlets in Port Stephens.

The Fedz rock the Spinner By Rachael VAUGHAN
THE Spinning Wheel Hotel in Raymond Terrace has Live Music on the weekends,
usually solo artists. This weekend however, they have booked a band to play, and it is definitely one to check out.

day. The Fedz have had a lot of experience playing in the live music scene in Newcastle and Port Stephens over the past twelve years and are guaranteed to put on a toetapping show. The Fedz consist of three experienced musicians, James Body, Lead Vocal and bass guitar, David Rudder lead vocal and guitar, and John Shelton on drums and backing vocals. James Body started his musical career in the Australian Army playing all over the country as a piper in the Australian Army Pipes Band. On leaving the Army he took up the bass guitar. During the show he will be playing bass guitar, bagpipes, acoustic guitar and singing lead vocal. James is looking forward to the challenges of playing as a
three-piece band. David Rudder has been playing and performing music in the Newcastle Music scene on and off since about the age of 20 and is an experienced and powerful guitar player. David will be playing rhythm and lead guitar, bass guitar and singing lead vocal and backing vocals.
John Shelton just loves his music and is an extremely talented drummer, who was a founding member of the Covers Band 24 Hours before joining The Fedz. The Fedz are looking forward to playing the Spinning Wheel Hotel on Friday 15 December, get down and support the Spinning Wheel Hotel and their love for live music.
q The Fedz are sure to impress this Friday night at The Spinning Wheel Hotel.

Mr (Noel) John Ridgeway, OAM, provided the Welcome to Country with his song that has become like a personal trademark sung at many events, I’m Proud To Be An Aborigine. Mr Ridgeway who proudly announced he has been a Worimi man for 77 years provided some great singing entertainment to those attending the event.
q John Ridgeway, Kate Washington, and Doug Monk welcome people to the event.
Member for Port Stephens Ms Kate Washington MP guest spoke at the event, saying, “Sailability does amazing work in our community and beyond supporting participants to pursue their ambitions.” “This year’s theme is about transforming communities and encouraging those with disabilities to become more active in their communities.” “Thank you Sailability Port Stephens for reducing barriers to those with disabilities so they can participate in the community.” Attendance at Sailability events has been down this year, and it is thought that issues with the NDIS have now limited participation in this great initiative.
q A singing Welcome To Country by John Ridgeway.

One of the many exciting aspects of Christmas is completing the Christmas Lights Tour. In the weeks leading up to Christmas you’ll see Mums & Dads out driving around the streets at night with excited little faces in the back of the car drinking in all that Christmas cheer of bright lights and amazing decorations. Some of our awesome community members spend a lot of time, effort and expense putting up these beautiful displays for our little ones, each and every year.
