RAAF Base Blood Saves Lives By Simone JOHNSON
WILLIAMTOWN RAAF Base has been awarded for their efforts in donating blood to the Australian Red Cross. The awards, presented last month by the Williamtown Blood Challenge Coordinator, Mr Samuel Hayes, were received by Air Base Executive Officer, WGCDR Amanda Cornell and the Base Services Manager, Mary-Ann Mellor. The awards recognised RAAF Base Williamtown’s highest donation of blood and plasma in the region in 2016, sitting at 1190 donations. It is estimated these donations will save 3570 lives. The RAAF Base exceeded their original goal of securing 25% of Australia’s blood donations in 2016. Air Base Executive

Officer, WGCDR Amanda Cornell said, “Your support and generosity is commended and I encourage you to continue regular blood donations when the Red Cross visits the Base every six weeks.” “This is a chance for you to have a break from your desk, your email and your phone; lie back, get comfy and roll up a sleeve for a great cause,” Ms Cornell said. The Base has a quarterly Williamtown Blood Challenge, with their Surveillance & Communications Systems Program Office (S&CSPO) winning the first award for 2017. S&CSPO members made a total of 33 donations in the first quarter of 2017, which included six off-Base Plasma donations. The challenge is currently on for other units to equal or greater this number.

MEDOWIE Tennis Club Inc. has just finished having their hard courts refurbished, and one of the two courts made into three hot shots courts for younger players at the club. The Medowie Tennis Club hard courts are the only two courts of this type in the Hunter area. Diane Rees from Medowie Tennis Club told News Of The Area, “The newly lined court is so valuable to our children of four years and upwards.”
We need as many residents as possible to attend the meeting to show support.”
Agent Tiffany Jeffery told News Of The Area, “These recent changes are fantastic for first home buyers.” “The time to move
is now, get in and visit a broker and see what they can make happen for you that you potentially would not have thought was possible.”

FIRST home buyers are being given some breathing space, with the recent announcement from the State Government that it will cut stamp duty for first home buyers. With the pressure on first home buyers to save a large deposit whilst in many cases also paying rent, this news is a welcome relief. The new announcements mean that all first home buyers are now exempt from stamp duty on existing properties as well as new builds, up to the purchase price of $650,000, with a maximum saving of $26,800. There will also be concessions available up to $850,000. First home buyers will
also be exempt from stamp duty on their mortgage insurance. The average house price in Medowie now sits around $475,000, with first home buyers commonly purchasing properties around the $400,000 mark. The stamp duty saving of a purchase price of $420,000 (existing property) is $11,240. The new announcement can give first homebuyers a maximum saving of $26,800. Home Loans Broker Jacqueline Stokes told News Of The Area, “There are some great options for first home buyers that I think a lot of people aren’t aware of.” “It is possible to get a home loan without a deposit, much to a lot of first home buyers’ surprise.” Medowie Real Estate

To the rescue with new bins THE talented fellows at the Salamander Men’s Shed have put together their most recent creations, and now we need the public to help fill them. The volunteers at the Men’s Shed have manufactured pet food donation bins for the charitable people at Dog Rescue Newcastle. The bins are made from recycled pallets and engineered by the Men’s Shed volunteers using hinges and screws donated by the community-minded staff and management at Medowie Hardware. Coles Medowie has had a donation bin for some time, but now there are also bins at Medowie Woolworths and Medowie Pet Shed. Donations of all pet food, dry or tinned, is appreciated, and there is a number listed on the bins should anyone decide to donate something that is frozen or too large to fit in the bins. Dog Rescue Volunteers
are more than happy to come and collect. Featured on the bins are photographs of current dogs that are residing in the care of Port Stephens rescue volunteers. Dog Rescue Volunteer carer Jodi Deamer told News Of The Area, “These bins are such a fantastic creation, we are so grateful for the
Men’s Shed in helping us to roll these bins out across Medowie and Port Stephens.” “Any donations will be accepted with open arms.” “We rely on the wonderful generosity of the community to keep doing the important work we do,” she said. At Woolworths Medowie, there is also a small plastic bin for donations to Port

Beanies for Brain Cancer By Rachael VAUGHAN
MEDOWIE has played a part in the Mark Hughes Foundation Beanies for Brain Cancer Fundraiser, selling out in a matter of days with Beanies at Woolworths and other local outlets. The Mark Hughes Foundation is aiming to raise $2 million dollars for research into finding a cure for Brain Cancer, and they have achieved $1.7 million of that goal so far. Mark Hughes was a Newcastle Knights player from 1997 until 2005. When he was diagnosed in 2013 with brain cancer, Mark was overwhelmed by the support of his family, friends and community. As a way of repaying those who had helped him and to help others in his position,

Mark and his wife launched the Mark Hughes Foundation. Brain cancer kills more children than any other disease, and kills more people under 40 in Australia than any other cancer, yet it receives less than five
percent of government cancer research funding. Beanies for Brain cancer was launched to help combat this appalling lack of funding and raise much needed funds to find a cure for brain cancer, create awareness and support
for brain cancer patients and their families. Medowie Woolworths

Tech Savvy Seniors By Geoff WALKER IF you are over 60 and feel increasingly isolated in the world of cyberspace you are not alone. You do however have two options. You can retreat into your own little world of 'the good old days' or you can move with the times. Who knows? With a bit of dedication you may very well be able to join in with your grandchildren playing computer games in a year or so. Exciting prospect, isn't it? Seriously, the government doesn't want you left behind so they are linking arms with Telstra to bring you up to pace. 'Tech Savvy Seniors' is part of the NSW Ageing Strategy initiative and functions under the umbrella of the WEA Hunter. Starting on 27 June, the course will run for nine weeks. It is free and will be overseen by local cyber Guru Sue Hamilton. The venue is the Lemon Tree Passage Library (opposite the motel). Lessons will be conducted each Tuesday between 12 noon and 3pm. The library does have a limited number of computers, but those taking part should bring their own devices to practise on. Subjects covered will include basic computers, the internet, email, cyber safety, online banking, smart phones and tablets. To book a place or to get more information simply phone WEA Hunter on 4925 4200.
Threat to Ngioka Centre By Heather SHARP & Rachael VAUGHAN
PORT Stephens is known for its beautiful natural environment, and the very name of Medowie means Place Of Tall Trees. The beautiful natural and native environment of Port Stephens is often used as a marketing tool in attracting tourists to the area. It is difficult to understand then why the Port Stephens Council has made the controversial and unpopular decision to announce a potential funding cut leading to the closure of a key practical conservation group, Ngioka Horticultural
Therapy Centre. It is the only one of its kind in Port Stephens. With the local council elections due to be held 9 September, cost-cutting is the reason being given for its closure, however local volunteer Landcare and Tidy Towns groups have a different perspective about the outcomes of the review into Ngioka. Councillor Geoff Dingle, who is also an active member of the Medowie Tidy Towns volunteer group, told News Of The Area, “Ngioka not only supplies native plants to all the volunteer Landcare and Tidy Towns groups in Port Stephens, it also provides
plants to Port Stephens Council ground maintenance staff.” “The nearest native plant stock suppliers if Ngioka closed would be Trees of Newcastle who have moved to Belmont, not exactly convenient.” Ngioka has supported the Medowie community through a variety of projects, including providing Lomandra plants for the Tallowood cycleway walk and plants to create a koala habitat such as the forested area in Ferodale Road which is now a koala food reserve. The Medowie Tidy Towns volunteer group has been instrumental in putting these
environmentally friendly initiatives in place. Councillor Dingle also said, “Medowie has a Ngioka depot horticultural facility in Medowie and it is used to propagate and store plants for projects.” Other local community groups benefit from Ngioka’s operation, such as Lifestyle Solutions, a disability service that is supported by Ngioka in establishing support for clients through NDIS. It also provides a much needed business to the local community with plants propagated available for sale. In a statement issued jointly by Landcare and Tidy Towns, Works Coordinator for
first viewing only cemented that feeling, the feeling was so strong that it was meant to be our home.” ‘We knew it had good, old, strong bones, and we have thoroughly enjoyed restoring her to be our much loved
home,” she said. Francess and Mark began researching the history of the home, with the assistance of News Of The Area, the Raymond Terrace Historical Society and long-time residents from Medowie.
It has been discovered that the home at Lakeside Terrace was in fact originally a family home in Raymond Terrace, situated across from where the Historic Raymond Terrace Courthouse still stands. When the area around the courthouse and home in Williams Street eventually became commercial, the home then became the premises for Edstein Monumental Stonemasons who moved from their old King Street Raymond Terrace shopfront in 1900. The business had a manufacturing workshop on site, and examples of headstones and memorials in the surrounding yard. In 1970, the area was redeveloped into true commercial buildings, and the home was put up for sale to be relocated. It was moved to its
Stonemasons and Tuckshops By Rachael VAUGHAN
THE home at 24 Lakeside Terrace, Medowie, currently owned by Francess Zahra and Mark Tipper has a strong history. When Francess and Mark were first shown the property last year, they were immediately drawn to it. They recognised the style of the footings on the building as being a clear giveaway that the home and adjacent granny flat were not originally built on the premises, and had been relocated there some time ago. Francess and Mark purchased the home soon after, and set about restoring this old homestead to her former glory. The renovations included stripping the floors and renovating the original floorboards, which appear to be nearly 100 years old, resheeting the walls and 11 foot ceilings back to the original bones, and restoring bathrooms. They remarked to News Of The Area that they cannot explain the strong connection they immediately felt with the home. Francess said, “When I saw the home, even before we viewed it, I was instantly drawn to it, and felt like it was ours.” “Visiting the home on our

the Corlette Parks Reserves and Landcare Group, Ms Margaret Wilkinson stated, “It is understood that councillors are to be briefed on 20 June and this will be followed with a recommendation to go to the meeting of Council scheduled for 27 June.” “There will be little opportunity for public consultation before councillors consider the options.” “Port Stephens Council is treating Ngioka purely as a business rather than as the important environmental service it provides.” For readers with an opinion on this matter, please email council@portstephens. nsw.gov.au. current location in Lakeside and had two owners before Mark and Francess purchased the property. The granny flat on the property also has a special history, with the uncovering of information that the building was originally a classroom at Raymond Terrace Public School, before becoming their tuckshop, situated across the road from the school in Swan Street. The building was purchased by a teacher at the school, who owned the relocated Lakeside House, and he had the tuck shop relocated onto the Lakeside property to be used as a granny flat around 1972. Francess and Mark have the exterior of the homestead and the old Tuck Shop next on their renovation list. A home that would potentially look like many others in the older sections of Medowie when you drive past, is one that holds so much significant history.

field at 9am, and the 19s team also playing at 11:10am. Premier Rugby 3 will kick off at 12:30, with Medowie taking on Merewether. This game will see a hard battle between the two formidable opponents. Medowie is set for a great game if they can harness the momentum from last week’s 50-7 win against Singleton Army into this week’s match. 1:45pm will see Nelson Bay go head to head with Waratah in Premier 2, in what is set to be an interesting match. At 3pm the Premier 1 match will kick off with Nelson Bay and Waratah doing battle in what is promised to be hard fought and fast paced game. Regardless of any final scores, the winner of the day will undoubtedly be local rugby, with a packed day of rugby and club competition
from 9am until 5:45pm. Jackie Murphy from Medowie & Districts Rugby Club told News Of The Area, “Premier Rugby coming to Medowie came about as a result of Medowie and Nelson Bay having a Memorandum of Understanding to work together with the two clubs.” “One of the items to come out of this fantastic agreement is the success of bringing Premier Rugby to Medowie.” “Medowie has invested a lot of effort and money to make the day a success, and hopefully everyone that attends will enjoy themselves whilst watching the highest level of rugby available in the Hunter,” she said. Seniors matches are also set to be televised. Come along and support our local Rugby Club as they take on the next level of Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union.

Future Diving Star
By Rachael VAUGHAN JOSHUA Lee, a young gymnast News Of The Area interviewed last year, has excelled again. This time he has swapped the gymnastics gear for swimmers, and is trying his hand at diving. Nine year old Joshua recently represented Medowie Christian School at the Combined Independent School Diving Championships, where he placed second and was selected to represent the Combined Independent Schools at the Primary Schools Sports Association (PSSA) State Championships. At PSSA, Joshua placed third and has been selected to represent NSW at the Pacific School Games which will be held in Adelaide from 1 - 10 December. Joshua also competed at the State Age Championships in Sydney where he competed in the 11 years and under 1m springboard and received the gold medal. He only started diving 18 months ago at a diving holiday camp at Abbotsleigh in Sydney. When in Sydney, he is coached by Rebecca Manuel (nee Gilmore) who won a bronze medal at the 2000 Olympic Games. Over the summer he trains with Hunter

United Diving Academy at Lambton Pool with coach Jie Tang, who was both an athlete and coach in China, before moving to Australia in 2011. Mr Tang told News Of The Area, “Josh is a very talented diving and gymnastics athlete. He has the much needed height and body shape for diving and he is very willing to strive to meet the requirements of all the discipline requires.” “At nine years old Josh is too young and inexperienced for the next Olympic Games.” “But in 2024 he will be 16 years old, and in 2028 he will be 22, which is the golden age for an Olympic diver,” Mr Tang said. “We will work hard over the next three years to lay the basic skills and work towards a bright future.” Ms Manuel, Joshua’s Sydney coach, told News Of The Area, “Josh is a fantastic talent and could have a real future in diving.” “I am excited to see how he performs at his first major event in December.” Joshua still trains and competes in gymnastics, and is competing at Level 5 this year. News Of The Area wishes Joshua all the best with his sporting endeavours, and will keep up to date with his achievements.
