Firies Effort was Simply Amazing

RURAL Fire Brigade have been out on crew rotations since Monday 8 Jan, clocking up over a week of continuous fire fighting, back burning and clean up, which has seen the brigade go through more than a dozen crew rotations. A fire on Masonite Road at Tomago started off the more than week-long battle of working against extreme weather conditions. The KBDI (Keetch-Byran Drought Index), devised to measure the likelihood of wildfire based on soil moisture and other condition related to drought, measured Williamtown and surrounds at 150 on Sunday 14 January. Measurement scales go from zero, meaning no drought, through to 800, reflecting extreme drought.

q Harrison Wright, Andrew Collins, Ian harding and Gavin Smith swapping the crews over to head back out to the fire front that caused havoc for over a week from Tomago to Medowie.

The fire, thought to be started by a bolt of lightning, quickly lit up the hot, dry grass and the fire took off rapidly. Local brigades, had the fire under control by late Wednesday. Crews from Medowie assisted with keeping the smouldering area under control and from reigniting, only to have the intense weather create havoc again on Friday morning. Medowie RFB member Gavin Smith told News Of The Area, “On Friday morning, Raymond Terrace brigade were out doing a patrol with National Parks at the Masonite road site, and Medowie got a call around midday to assist with a crew and chainsaw operator to

THEY broke the mould when they made Bill Taylor. Bill is certainly unique, he is also one of the most beloved members of the Medowie Rural Fire Brigade and a friend to many in the town itself. He’s built mini replica fire engines for our young people to enjoy at fire station open days, and he’s created a very special toy for Medowie’s young Carter Goodwin. Bill is a true character, and there’s a lot more to Bill than you may have heard around town.. Bill has put pen to paper and written down his many memoirs in a book titled “A Fortunate Boomer: A ‘Baby Boomers’ Life Recollections”. The reason Bill wanted to write his story is simple. It’s all about family. Bill told News Of The Area, “I was inspired to write my story for my Grandkids and Great

Grandkids and their kids eventually.” “So that they knew what it was like for me growing up in the 50’s until now, and also my good fortune along the way.” From being born

in the Sydney suburb of Bankstown in 1946 to a serious cancer scare in more recent times, and everything in between, Bill has written his memoirs with the same humour and attention to detail that he shows anyone who is

lucky enough to have a conversation with him. For those of you who don’t know, Bill spent most of his life in the Ambulance Service. That alone fills many pages, as you can guess. You can imagine the many situations Bill has found himself in during his career as an “Ambo”, but as you read along, you also find out about the politics of the job. Bill’s take is presented in a frank and honest fashion that leaves you in no doubt what he thinks. In this era of looking ahead, it is nice to see that someone like Bill understands the importance of looking back. We’re sure his great, great, great grandchildren will be very appreciative when the time comes. At the next fire station event, find Bill and ask him for a copy of his book. And don’t forget his autograph!

THE launch of the ‘Return and Earn’ program has created a fair divide in the love/hate relationship residents are feeling. The reverse vending machine style program launched on December 1, with Medowie Woolworths loading bay one of the trial pilot locations for the new statewide program. Residents can recycle their cans, bottles and glass for a 10c refund per item. There has been widespread support, and also criticism for the program as it works with its pilot locations to see what works, and what does not. The machines are filled quickly, which means residents are certainly taking

advantage of the system, but residents and out of towners are also getting frustrated by traveling to the site to find the bins full or arriving to find the site in a mess due to people leaving their boxes and rubbish strewn about. Cleaners are employed to clean the site daily, yet residents continue to be careless with their garbage, making their jobs even harder. One resident who has found value with the program in its fledgling stage is Nicholas McLaren from Raymond Terrace. Nicholas found that whilst he was enjoying using the machine for fundraising with his son, and valued the program being available, he was getting frustrated at wasting petrol to drive from Raymond Terrace to

Medowie, only to find the bins/machine full or out of order. He had the brilliant idea of creating the Facebook group ‘Medowie Return and Earn’ this week, which has already surpassed 500 members. The group members have been quite active straight away in keeping each other updated on when the bins are emptied, and alerting out of towners when they are fine to make the trip in. Nicholas told News Of The Area, “For me I saw a need there.” “People, including myself, wanted to know when the machines were working and when they were full.” “Since so many people are out there using it everyday it made sense to make a group and crowdsource the information.” The page

had nearly 200 members in the first 24hrs and is now over 500 before the end of their first week. Nicholas added, “It also gives the community an idea of the volume we are all recycling, and I think knowing when the machine is running will entice more people to use it.” The group is also helping to combat the negative experiences with the return and earn machine, making this ‘ironing out’ period of this new program an easier experience. For more information on the program itself, visit: www.returnandearn. org.au and www. tcnsw.com.au.

contact with a power pole across from Finnan Park, Grahamstown Dam, on his way home on Monday. The grass at the base of the power pole quickly caught alight, and Gus pulled over to do what he could to contain it. A News Of The Area reporter just happened to be travelling close behind with her mother and son, and stopped to give assistance to

Gus. The pair worked to smother the edges of the fire patch and prevent it from getting away until the fire brigade could attend to take over. It was wonderful to see some familiar faces of some Medowie families who also stopped to help soon after and placed calls to Raymond Terrace Fire and Rescue, updating them on the situation. Gus was worried the fire got away for a bit, but the helpers made sure it didn’t move far, with everyone safely working as a team. One extra special volunteer from the community played a vital part in the containment of the fire as it threatened to move towards the bushland of

The small pockets of rain during the week were far too little, and brought with them dangerous lightning that made situations worse, and the intense heat and gail force winds only added to the chaotic conditions. Andrew Collins, Captain of Medowie Rural Fire Brigade, told News Of The Area, “Over the course of the week, we have rotated through at least a dozen Medowie crews, with more

THE extreme fire conditions and intense weather has been hard on people, but it has been disastrous for our defenceless wildlife. WINC (Wildlife in Need of Care) has never had so many infant wildlife coming into care, and they’re running short on some things, and are hoping the community might be able to supply help out. Lorraine Yudaeff, President of WINC told News Of The Area, “This season has been catastrophic for wildlife that cant defend themselves, and WINC is doing everything we can to help them.”

“We have put the call out to the community and hope that people can go through their cupboards and see what they’re able to help out with.” “Anything is appreciated, so that we can continue to do the job that we do,” she said. WINC are in desperate need of old sheets, pillowcases, towels or tea towels you haven’t needed or used for ages and need to cull down on. Lorraine said, “We can immediately put them to very good use in providing snuggling places for baby animals.” If you, or anyone you know can sew, WINC are also in need of a lot more pouches

There are a lot of very young animals in care who would be very grateful for anything you can do. If you can help, or have any questions, please contact Lorraine at laramel@fernbay. com or 49 283229. THE sweltering hot days of summer have well and truly set in, with little to no relief over the last two hot weeks. A number of days in a row in the high 40’s gave Medowie residents a less than enjoyable week last week, but they were cheered somewhat by the generosity and support of our two local supermarkets. Medowie businesses Coles and Woolworths came

to the aid of melting residents, with locals jumping on social media to commend the stores with helping residents to stay cool. Both supermarkets put out tables with eskies filled with ice and bottled waters, offering customers to take a cool drink as they entered their stores. Anne-Marie Stott-Lucas from Coles Medowie told News Of The Area, “We love giving back to the community, so this is a simple way to make

sure the community knows they have our support.” “This Summer has been a scorcher, so a simple bottle of water can make a big difference on a hot day out doing errands.” Residents are also urged on these hot days to consider leaving a bucket of water outside their homes for any wildlife who may be out and about and feeling the effects of these scorching temps.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from readers throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda, My boyfriend bought me a puppy for my birthday. I was about to break up with him, but the puppy is really cute and I don’t have the heart to do it now. Miss KL, Medowie

Well, Miss KL, this is a conundrum on a number of levels. To start with, and I am being deadly serious here, you should never buy anyone a pet for a present. Pets are something that require careful consideration, adequate shelter and fencing, and a healthy bank account. It is not just the initial outlay, it is the ongoing maintenance: tick treatments, worming, bathing and grooming, replacing the twelve chooks down the road that your dog decided to maul, relining the wall on your rental property after your dog (which is prohibited under your rental agreement) chewed a dog-shaped hole through it, and so on. Your boyfriend did a well-intentioned, but silly thing. Next is the issue of being stuck with this guy because of a dog. Have you read Careful, He Might Hear You or watched Kramer vs Kramer? Your life could become just like that. I sincerely hope you have both written a prenuptial agreement (or in this case a prepuptial agreement). There are important things to consider when you inevitably part ways. Who will continue the puppy obedience sessions? Who will pay for the dog’s needs in winter (puppy coat, blanket, raincoat and so on)? Will you split custody 50/50, or will one of you have to pay dog support? What if you are deemed to be unfit parents? What if, heaven forbid, the dog knocks up another dog and you are left with a litter of pit-bull-crosspoodle pups and you start to look like one of those families from The Jerry Springer Show? Just like those first weeks with a new boyfriend, early days with a pup are full of slobbery kisses, cute photos, gourmet meals and walks along the beach. The long haul, however, is quite a different story. I hope you’re up for it, Miss KL. Pups, like boyfriends, can eventually grow into different beasts altogether. Carpe diem, Jasminda

Public Art to Define Communities

By Marian SAMPSON PORT Stephens Cultural Plan 2015 – 2018 provides Council and the community with a strategy that enables resources to be prioritised and integrated into Council’s future strategic plans to build a healthy art and cultural community. The Cultural Plan aligns with cultural planning directions identified at Federal and NSW levels including strategies that encourages residents to have an increased participation in arts and culture, strengthening the cultural sectors capacity and celebrating its cultural diversity. The aim of the plan is to connect through the Port Stephens community to build a vibrant and sustainable

cultural life, which values the potential of the area’s culture, distinct local characteristics and collective possibilities. One key part of the plan is to recognise the cultural zones Port Stephens could be divided into. The proposed zones are in the western part of the region the Rural Zone, a History Zone around Raymond Terrace, Life on the River, Estuary Living, Coastal Village centred around Nelson Bay, Surfing Mecca at One Mile and Birubi Beach, Grow Your Own centred around Medowie, Quiet Coastal Gateway of Fern Bay and its surrounds and the Aspirational Industry around Tomago with the proposed zones covering the entire LGA. MEDOWIE teenager Aaron Lindsay could not have been happier when, just days before Christmas, he was finally able to join his team mates on a fire call. At just 16 years of age, Aaron is the youngest member of Medowie Rural Fire Brigade, transferring

to Medowie after originally joining as a Junior member at Bowthorne / Hinton Brigade aged just 13 years. “Ever since I was little I wanted to be a firefighter,” said Aaron. “I remember, as a kid, watching shows like ‘Fireman Sam’ and that is what spurred

Stephens Council told News Of The Area, “Creating a unique sense of place in towns and suburbs across Port Stephens is a challenge that Council is very keen to tackle. He believes that public art is one very effective way to achieve that. “What we are currently doing is working with local communities to establish cultural zones. These zones will help us to find the most appropriate style of art for each area. “We know that each part of our local government area has its own identity and each community has a different view about what makes their space unique.” he said. Council is looking to identify places for the themed public art to be sited, and they are asking

for a break or refilling trucks ready to go back out.” It took a joint effort between Medowie Brigade and RFS District Office to help Aaron’s Christmas wish come true. “Once a Junior member reaches 16 years old they then have to pass a practical assessment to ensure they know what they are doing and it is safe for them to attend an incident,” said Senior Deputy Captain Peter Smith. “Aaron had been so keen to turn-out after his birthday we couldn’t make him wait over the Christmas break as well.” “With the help of the District Office we were able to arrange for a volunteer assessor from a neighbouring area to come out the weekend before Christmas and run Aaron through his assessment.” Naturally, a diligent and enthusiastic Aaron passed his assessment and is now following in the footsteps of his parents, Grahame and Leanne Lindsay and older sister Brooke, volunteering with the Rural Fire Service.

Unique Rock Duo

By Rachael VAUGHAN

LAKESIDE Tavern have got you covered this weekend if you’re looking for a night out on the town. Newcastle duo ViAgro will hit the stage from 8:30pm on Saturday 20 January.

For those not fortunate enough to have heard them, ViAgro are a duo of brothers that divide a drum kit between its two members whilst singing and playing guitars at the same time. Palzy Daivah on vocals, bass and cymbals and Adem

Daivah on vocals, guitar, kick and snare drums. The end result of this impressive split is a full sounding rock band show cleverly pulled off by only two people. With a heavily revamped repertoire of classic songs

spanning over six decades of rock, and a few tunes from their own 2010 debut EP, you get a very entertaining, unique and highly energetic show. After a decade plus of constant performing the one and only viAgro are still up for the usual post gig question, with audience members always in awe of how they pull off their unique act. “We still get asked that every night, along with the

various jokes about our name, and numerous theories and opinions on why we haven’t got a drummer” says cofounder Palzy Daivah. “A lot of bands lay claim to being different, but over our ten year existence we’ve yet to come across or even hear of another band that does what, looks or sounds like we do,” continues Palzy. With over 1500 shows performed, ViAgro have also supported The Screaming

Jets and toured with The Angels on their 2014 40th Anniversary tour. ViAgro, happily claiming you can’t miss their act, and witnessing them ‘abusing covers like no others’. Palzy told News Of The Area, “It’s always a mad night of rock n roll and partying at Lakeside Tavern, and we’re looking forward to making some noise and having a drink with all the locals once again!”

q Palzy and Adem from ViAgro hit Lakeside Tavern.

Recycling Soccer Star

medowie@newsofthearea.com.au

By Rachael VAUGHAN

XANDER Oxford has his eyes set on becoming the next Mark Schwarzer, one of Australian Soccer’s best goalkeepers. Such is the talent of the Raymond Terrace ten-yearold, he is on track to being able to emulate any one of his soccer idols. English Premier League club West Ham United certainly think so. The London club have extended an invitation to Xander to attend their invitation only Development Camp in the UK. The camp includes several training sessions conducted by top clubs, including West Ham, as well as a tour and session of England FA National Training Centre at St Georges Park. This is an incredible opportunity for anyone, let alone a soon to be eleven-yearold. However, it is important to point out that this invitation has come along thanks to years

q Xander Oxford, Soccer Star.

of hard work and sacrifice. After beginning his football ventures as a seven-year-old, Xander won a position in the Hunter Valley Hawks squad based in Cessnock. This placement required Xander to be driven to Cessnock twice a week to train, plus an additional session at Thornton for goalkeeper training. Xander’s skill and aptitude with the Hawks helped him earn a place in the Newcastle SAP Under 10 and Under 11 squads. There’s no doubt about it, he’s a talent. Xander’s mother Lea told News Of The Area, “Xander knows that it’s only hard work that gets success.” “Playing against the emerging Jets every week means always being on top of his game and making sure the see his best.” However, as proud as Xander’s family are of his accolades and achievements,

the reality is that the family need to make sacrifices and pay their own hard earned funds for Xander to continue on his football journey. This includes Xander’s upcoming trip overseas to the UK. So, Xander and his family are asking for the community for help through fundraising. Part of Xander’s fundraising effort is simple, but very effective – recycling cans with the ‘Return and Earn’ scheme in on trial in Medowie.. “Recycling cans is great as it is something that Xander can do which gets him involved in the fundraising,” Lea told News of the Area. “We’ve received a couple of donations so far, but we are hoping for more to get involved, including cafes and pubs if they are able.” If you would like to help Xander achieve his dream, please contact Lea on KLMcLaren7@gmail.com.
