Jarrod tells his family story By Rachael VAUGHAN
ONE of Medowie’s own is one of thirty-eight regional young Australians to be announced as the winners of the ABC’s Heywire Storytelling competition. Jarrod Sansom was selected for his story about his family, and their one hundred year plus history on the family property that is now within the Redzone, and the heartbreaking developments in recent years. The Heywire competition has been running for over twenty years, and is a place for regional and rural young people aged 16 – 22, to share their unique stories, and to have their voices heard. The winners collectively show the true Australia, a diverse collection of people from all walks of life, all with different backgrounds, experiences, hopes and dreams,

Jarrod’s story impressed the judges with his raw and passionate story telling of his rich childhood on the family

of the community to continue to do the wonderful volunteer work they do. Last week, a generous couple who own a Port Stephens business decided to help out this wonderful service. Colin and Noeline Karlson own and operate a small business in Tanilba Bay. They have spent many years volunteering at the Tilligerry Habitat Reserve, seeing and assisting in its development from a sand mine to a vibrant Reserve which is a corridor for Tilligerry Peninsula koalas, a habitat for approximately 100 bird species, and many small
mammals and reptiles. Dorothea Willey, the current Tilligerry Habitat President told News Of The Area that the Management Committee of the Reserve recently approved a sizeable project to redevelop the entrance to the habitat. This improvement to the entrance will showcase the uniqueness of the flora, which grow in the Reserve, and the

that the stories from the Redzone are all coming to light. One particular passage of Jarrod’s story brings forth a rush of emotion, where it tells of the loss of his Grandfather and three of Grandfather’s siblings to the same type of stomach Cancer. Jarrod’s story is raw, and an important one that needs to be heard as the residents of Williamtown continue their own battle to be heard by the Government. In February, the winners will attend the Heywire Regional Youth Summit in Canberra. During the week-long summit, the winners will meet with Members of Parliament and community leaders, to develop ideas to strengthen their communities. Kate Washington MP told News Of The Area, “I will introduce Jarrod to residents in the Redzone before he goes to the
wider Tilligerry Peninsula. Colin and Noeline jumped at the chance to support the venture and proposed to donate $500, which they did on Tuesday, 28 November. Dorothea told News Of The Area, “The Tilligerry Habitat Association is very appreciative of this donation and will make good use of the funds to ensure that this three year project will meet its
summit, so he can hear straight from them what the message they want sent to Parliament is.” Jarrod told News Of The Area, “I wrote the story to tell a story about my upbringing, I could have told any story, but I wanted to use my chance to shine some light on what all the residents in the Redzone are still going through.” “We got out, unbeknownst to what was about to come to light, and they are there left behind to deal with all this.” “I want to be a voice and make some noise, and hopefully bring about some more awareness and get people talking.” “I’m only one person, but if we all speak out, we can make change happen,” he said.
objectives.” “Colin and Noeline are stalwart supporters of maintaining and showcasing the unique flora of the Tilligerry Peninsula, and passionate about reducing the monocultures that threaten the biodiversity of the Reserve”. q Colin and Noeline Karlson donating a very generous $500 to the Tilligerry Habitat Association.

CWA special NICU project
By Rachael VAUGHAN
THE women of Medowie Country Women’s Association (CWA) have been very busy. Their Christmas season is filled to the brim with events that celebrate this season of giving, and they have immersed themselves in doing some wonderful things for those in need this Christmas, News Of The Area met with two of these very special Medowie CWA ladies to hear about one act of goodwill and kindness in particular. It is set to give many families a much needed boost of support to keep their spirits high this Christmas. The Medowie CWA is supporting the families of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at John Hunter Hospital. Many families between now and Christmas will learn that their tiny miracles will be spending Christmas Day in hospital, and the Medowie CWA ladies are making sure that their first Christmases are still very special despite not being able to be in their own homes. The CWA ladies are providing every NICU cot, bassinet and giraffe bed with very special christmas bedding, made with love by
q Medowie CWA Publicity Officer Kay Coghlan and President June Fuller with just a few of the special creations. Medowie CWA President June Fuller. June has had a long association with the NICU and Children’s ward at John Hunter Hospital, and is proud to be helping make Christmas a special occasion this year. She has been an avid sewer for the majority of her
life and loves nothing more than using the fruits of her labour of love to help others. Every cent she makes from sewing and alteration work goes straight back into charity work. June worked with representatives from the NICU to measure up what
would work best for each type of bed, and got to work creating special pieces for every baby and family. June told News Of The Area, “We’ve founds some very special panels of material this year to use, and I’m proud of the results.” “It is very important to make sure that these families can celebrate Christmas with some special pieces here and there to make their time in the NICU a little bit easier during this time.” “These little babies are fighters, and they deserve to have something special for their first Christmas,” she said. June and her fellow CWA sewers and crafters work entirely from donations. If you would like to make a small donation from your family this Christmas to help them continue to do all the wonderful projects they do just like this one, there is an easy way to do so. Next time you visit Spotlight or Lincraft, or anyone who sells store vouchers on a stand, pop one in with your shopping, and drop it in the mailbox at 907 Richardson Road, Campvale for the CWA to use for purchasing more supplies to help others this Christmas.
Fern Bay Land Use
THE communities of Fern Bay and North Stockton have had their say on a new land use strategy for the area, with a supermarket and retail space seen as key priorities for respondents over the next 10 years. Port Stephens Council is working together with Newcastle City Council to develop the draft strategy, which is due to go before Council in mid-2018. Jeffrey Bretag, Council’s Strategic Planning Coordinator, says the initial consultation period has been vital for informing the draft strategy. “We received hundreds of responses, which gave us a great indication of the vision the residents of Fern Bay and North Stockton have for their community as it continues to grow,” Mr Bretag said. “It’s pretty clear that commercial development is seen as by far the most important priority for Fern Bay and North Stockton, followed by recreation facilities and pathways for pedestrians and bikes. “Residents also said the key priorities for open spaces are accessible amenities and sheltered picnic facilities, while the thing they loved most

about living in Fern Bay and North Stockton was the proximity to the water and to Newcastle. “It was also great to hear some of the community’s ideas for the area, which include improved beach access, an open air concert and movie space, 72 hour camping ground and even light rail from the airport to the Stockton ferry terminal,” he added. Mr Bretag says work is currently underway on the draft Fern Bay and North Stockton land use strategy, with the aim of having the final report to Council by mid-2018. “I want to thank everyone who got involved in the initial consultation period, as their ideas and aspirations for their region are crucial to getting this strategy right,” Mr Bretag said. “Our staff are currently hard at work collating feedback from the initial consultation period and we hope the community’s ideas shine through in the proposed strategy for Fern Bay and North Stockton. “We’ll be going back to the community during the public exhibition period next year to make sure we’ve hit the mark,” he said.

MEDOWIE residents have stocked up on power boards and extension leads, and they’ve flicked the switch! Gather the kids up, pack some snacks and your favourite christmas CD for the car and plan a trip around the streets of Medowie to check out the ever-growing number of homes sporting extravagant light displays this year. Medowie resident Nat McFarlane told News Of The Area, “We love putting up all the Christmas lights every year.” “The look on our girls faces is just priceless.” “Their grandad loved putting lights up every year before his passing and it’s great we can continue the family tradition,” she said. Resident of the infamous Eagle Close, who have been lighting up Medowie for fourteen years, Corynne Darcy, told News Of The Area, “We have wonderful neighbours who all support each other and enjoy seeing the happiness it brings to all the children that come to visit.” “Being a local school teacher, I have the children
come running up to me excitedly at school thrilled because they’ve visited the lights.” “It’s a special thing to be a part of.” The growing ‘Medowie Christmas Lights’ page on facebook has a list of streets not to be missed, and many residents are proudly sharing pics of their displays. Listed within the Medowie Christmas Lights group is a thoughtful map created by the ladies at R&R property. R&R property Managing Director Denise Haynes told News Of The Area, ‘The google interactive R & R Property Christmas Lights Map allows parents to go in and see where
the lights are, what streets, what addresses, and some have photos attached as well.” “In fact we would absolutely love it if the community could notify us about any homes we have missed and even take photos of the Christmas light displays to send to us so we can add them to our map.” “They can contact us through our Facebook pages R and R Property, Medowie Real Estate Or of course just give us a call on 4984 5766,” she said. Interested locals who are social media savvy are encouraged to look up the R&R property map, and to join the Facebook group ‘Medowie Christmas Lights’ for addresses to visit on your travels.

Perpetual B kkeeping
I’m not sure what your issue is with this fine Christmas tradition. What could be more enjoyable than standing in a queue that spans the entire circumference of the local food court with other screaming . . . I mean smiling mums and dads and their well-behaved offspring, all waiting patiently for their special time with the man in red? What could possibly bring more goodwill than joining together as babies howl at being placed on a strange man’s lap, photographers dance with stuffed toys to encourage the money shot, mums wipe spittle from toddlers and dads discuss how much they love forking out for cellophane, solar lights, baubles, LOL Surprise toys, hams, turkeys, prawns, cherries, drones, Lego sets, remote control cars with no batteries, trampolines that need an engineering degree to set up, with stealth, on Christmas Eve, and those boxes of toilet rolls wrapped in gold paper that contain a paper hat and a choking hazard (better known as Bon Bons). My children have always been forced to endure the great tradition of a Santa photo, particularly now they are surly teenagers. The one exception was last year when the queue was worse than every other year combined. Thankfully, the bearded man in the queue behind me had a similar body mass index to jolly old Mr Claus. I asked him to don one of the Santa hats I had in my shopping trolley, took a quick snap with my IPhone, and tried to ignore my kids as they whined “how embarrassing” all the way home. I do believe, Mrs LC, that the answer could be a new innovation that just occurred to me. Let’s call it the Santa Line Sitter (SLS). It involves paying obliging teenagers $10 to babysit your children until they reach position number two in the Santa queue. They’ll be happy, because they can stay glued to their devices, and you can do all your Christmas shopping. A quick text message notification and you can casually return to the queue, get the photo (or the 15 photos, digital pic, fridge magnets, postcards and Christmas mug upsize version) and be off on your merry way. The teenagers could be rated via an app, to make sure they are fine, upstanding queue sitters. I think, with a bit of tweaking, it’s a winner.

Medowie Colour Run
By Rachael VAUGHAN
MEDOWIE Public School was full of colour, fun and laughter recently, with their wonderfully successful inaugural Colour Fun Run Fundraiser. From all reports from students, families and staff, it was a day full of laughter, smiles and good clean, well rainbow, fun. The whole school came together to assist the Medowie Public School P&C
to organise the event, with lots of hard work all round to pull it all together. Melissa Skaines from Medowie Public School P&C told News Of The Area, “The idea was just to give the kids some fun, and we thought what better way then letting them get covered in water and rainbow chalk!” “We organised it with the Australian Fundraising Company who helped immensely and were very open in guiding us in our first
colour run.” “The day was a hit, every kid had fun and they have already starting asking for the next one!” she said. The students all created individual profiles for the colour run, and set fundraising goals to reach in order to win specific prizes. Jackie Dujmovic from the Sheflies program told News Of The Area, “This program will be the first event of its kind in NSW and is being sponsored by regional development Hunter and Me Program.” “It will be a great opportunity for local girls to learn more about this growing industry, and to immerse themselves in two days of cementing the knowledge in their heads that they can do anything they put their mind to that interests them.” “Sheflies generates conversation around gender equality in STEM, using the world of drones to inspire and provide a platform for change to occur,” she said. THE News Of The Area’s ‘Four Huge Events’ competition has been won by Marysha Joelle Stephens (Joe) of Raymond Terrace. Joe said, “Oh My God! I won! That is epic.” ‘Epic’ was probably an appropriate description for the competiton giveaway which saw four family passes won by Ms Stephens. Taraonga Zoo, Red Altert Laser Tag, Hunter Valley Gardens Christmas Lights Spectacular, and Australian Reptile Park are the destinations Joe and her family will be visiting this holiday period. “I'm so ecstatic. Thank you so much, this is incredible,” she said. News Of The Area wish to thank all who entered the competition. This is the second year the newspaper has run ‘Four Huge Events’ and it seems like it’s a popular addition to the competitions and giveaways N.O.T.A. will conduct.

Grief and Loss Christmas By Mandy ELLIS CRYING together is so less painful than crying alone. Losing a loved one is difficult at the best of times, however, Christmas is especially difficult. After attending a seminar on Grief and Loss at Christmas by Doris Zagdanski, a leading figure in modern day grief and loss, I walked away with some thoughts on dealing with grief, not limited to Christmas, for the entire grieving process. There is no set time for grieving to finish, grief can take years if not decades to come to terms with. According to Ms Zagdanski, “You are the expert on your grief.” There is no timeline, no right or wrong way and sometimes well-meaning family and friends may say, “Move on, but where to?” ‘Welcome to Holland’ by Emily Kingsley, is an exceptional analogy of describing how life can change. Grief is any loss that we did not want.
She also said, that we need to deal with grief as it happens because if we don’t, “Your grief will come and find you, so you might as well be found.” If you feel like following your traditions, do that, if you feel you can’t possibly then don’t, both options are absolutely right for you. If you’re a friend of a grieving person you can send cards, you can mention the name of the lost loved one. It is ok to send a card saying “Thinking of you and missing (name)”. It is ok to acknowledge the loved one, follow up with a phone call perhaps. Ask family what they would like to do to remember their loved one, can be setting a place for them at the table, partaking in a tradition they enjoyed or lighting a candle, whatever will work for those grieving is ok. Please seek support, it is available, head to www. mygriefassist.com.au. ‘Welcome to Holland’, is readily available through google search. Lifeline 13 11 14.

a prestigious event.” “In particular we want to thank, the Karuah RSL Club, The Big Brown House, The Myall Lions Club, The Tea Gardens Baptist Church, The Tea Gardens Bridge Club, The Tea Gardens Masonic Lodge, The Raymond Terrace Athletics Club and all the people who bought raffle tickets,” John said. “Our special thanks goes to Keira’s school, Medowie Christian School, for their generous assistance, and their continuous support and guidance to Keira throughout the year.” ”Finally we wish to give our thanks to our family and friends living in Victoria for their financial support and the great pair of sprinting spikes.” As a footnote, Keira had no sooner returned from Adelaide when she was again back on the track at the Little Athletics Zone championships and made another record breaking 4.98 metre leap in the high jump.
