Dunedoo trip to help fire victims By Rachael VAUGHAN
RESIDENTS in Medowie and the Tilligerry Peninsula are experienced with the fears and worry associated with the threat of fire, and the complete and utter devastation it can cause. Despite the close calls of recent fire seasons, and the catastrophic heat conditions of this year’s fire season, our picturesque local landscape has remained untouched this year. Local residents Melissa Van Wyk and Cameron Milner are well aware of how blessed we are to be unaffected, and

him with his marriage proposal to Kyra McGrorey-Clark. Harrison and Kyra were on their way to a Valentine’s dinner, with a stop on the way for Harrison to drop off some equipment to the station, or so she thought. When they arrived to see the station car park was full, Kyra immediately thought there was an emergency bushfire, and Harrison would be called out, thereby quashing their dinner plans. Kyra comically told News Of The Area, that at this point, she thought, “This is it, I’m going to be watching desperate Housewives and eating Pizza alone on Valentine’s Day.” “As I came around the corner, he was standing at the top of the steps with the Brigade all around him.” “It didn’t even register until we were mid hug that he was proposing,

Kyra told News Of The Area, “What made my night, is that on Valentine’s Day so many Brigade members had somehow convinced their significant others that Harry’s proposal to me was more important than whatever plans they may have had.” “They were there for us, to support us,” she said. DISTRIBUTION & COVERAGE:
Irrawang Breakfast Club By Rachael VAUGHAN THERE are many reasons children and young people may go to school without eating breakfast in the mornings. Whether it be something as simple as time management, or something more complex like family financial struggles or a lack of access to an availability of nutritious food, it is of great concern. Many experts believe breakfast is the most important meal of the day and that a nutritious breakfast aids children’s physical, mental and emotional development. Breakfast breaks the overnight fasting period, replenishes your supply of glucose and provides other essential nutrients to
keep your energy levels up throughout the day. If breakfast is skipped, the result can be feeling lethargic and tired and lead to difficulty concentrating and behaviour difficulties in the school environment. With these health facts in mind, Irrawang High School launched its Breakfast Club, which has now been running for five years. The Breakfast club runs every Tuesday morning from 8 - 8.30am. This invaluable program is coordinated by the Irrawang High School Chaplain Mrs Renee Allison, and assisted by a team of dedicated and valued volunteers from our community. Irrawang high school representative, Luelle Fagan, told News Of The Area, “We are pleased that these
students are able to have this important service provided to them.” “A good breakfast is a great start for a day at school where students need their energy and concentration,” “We are so grateful to Mrs Allison and her team of wonderful volunteers for making sure the Breakfast Club continues,” she said. Students are provided with a hot breakfast which varies from week to week and includes a juice in the warmer months and Milo in winter. Students in need of breakfast are more than welcome to simply attend the Breakfast Club on Tuesday mornings. Any students, or families, requiring more information on this program are invited to contact the school during school hours.
To feed the brain is to feed the stomach. This is the targeted purpose of the Breakfast Club that is welcomed.

Coffee and Creche By Rachael VAUGHAN
q A group of mums catching up for coffee, some of whom took the opportunity to put their older children in the creche for some fun activities - Margaret Hurn, Heather Sharp, Elysia Montgomery, Alison Elliott and Skye Welsh.
MEDOWIE Mums, a Facebook online community group, has begun organising weekly catch ups in Medowie as a way to ensure that all parents, dads included, feel they are supported on their parenting journey. Parents are more likely to experience anxiety and depression during the perinatal period (pregnancy through to when the child is three years old) than any other time in their lives. Intervention during this critical period is essential to improve the health of mothers and their ability to nurture their child, and for infants to develop a secure attachment with their mother. While the best advice for parents experiencing feelings of anxiety or depression is to speak with their medical health professional, it is also a wonderful opportunity for
our community of parents to look out for each other and offer strong support networks for each other. With this idea in mind, ‘Medowie Mums’ Facebook page has initiated catch ups at ‘Sportz Cafe’ on Ferodale Road, in the Medowie Sports Centre Complex. Parents can join the online Facebook group, and keep their eye on new catch up dates and days each week. Planning events like this takes the pressure off people to find the courage to organise a catch up. One very important, and relatively new, piece of news to share with Medowie parents is the widely unknown fact that parents are now able to enrol their child in the creche for a 90 minute session, and be anywhere in the centre during that allocated time. Parents no longer need to be gym members to use the

creche facility. It is open to all patrons of the Medowie Sports Centre, with the cafe, squash courts and planned pool, included. Medowie Mother, Skye Welsh, told News Of The Area, “It’s a fantastic initiative, and I for one I will certainly use the service.” “I have a newborn, and it’s nice to be able to give my 18 month old some time to play and do activities in a supervised environment at the creche, and to give her some extra attention that is naturally now divided with a newborn at home as well.” The fee is $5 per child for the 90 minute session, and bulk packs can be purchased at $40 for 10 visits and $70 for 20 visits. Join Medowie Mums on Facebook to keep up to date with new events, and feel free to join the group for a cuppa and a chat.

WITH the uncertainty of council amalgamation no longer an issue, it’s full steam ahead for Tilligerry according to Councillor Steve Tucker. “By not consulting those affected, the state government was taught a very bitter lesson when they lost the by-election in Orange. I don’t think they will ever raise the issue again,” he told News Of The Area. “Council has borrowed $6,000,000 for infrastructure development. “I’m thinking of hiving off $1,000,000 for a ‘ big ticket’ project for Tilligerry.” “Tourism seems to have the biggest potential for creating ongoing prosperity.

By Rachael VAUGHAN Tidy Towns MEDOWIE will combine this year with Medowie Lions Club to coordinate and manage Clean up Australia Day. The event is scheduled for Sunday 5 March. This once a year event is open to all groups, families and residents in our community, and is the perfect opportunity to show collectively that we care about the appearance and the amenity of our community. Port Stephens Councillor Geoff Dingle told News Of The Area, “By doing something by ourselves for ourselves we demonstrate we have a strong sense of community, which is so important for healthy and vibrant communities.” “The community centre
In particular, it will create part time work for our young people.” Cr Tucker said the peace and tranquillity of the area is proving popular with day trippers and holiday makers. “You can see this already after the $1.3 million dollar makeover of Henderson Park,” he said. “I tend to favour a relocation of the old school buildings from the isolated spot on top of the hill to McCann Park. In tandem with an Arts centre, a tourist information set up and possibly a museum located in the vacated fire station, it would then become a focal point for market days, fairs, car boot sales and tourist traffic.” Another undeveloped site is the large reserve behind
the Mallabula jetty. Cr Tucker believes It will need to be made more ‘people friendly’ by removing the barrier on the access road and given a makeover with seating, BBQs play equipment and other public amenities. “Of course we need to consider the wider community views and I’ll be drawing together a ‘think tank’ of business people and social groups to come up with a forward vision.” “Bruce [Mayor MacKenzie] and I would like to thank all those residents who swamped our local member and the state government with phone calls, letters and emails over the amalgamation proposal. People power can move mountains at times.”
these marsupials are found in the urban fringes of Tilligerry but the culprits out this way are most probably possums. They are a found in and around homes as people encourage their breeding with ‘possum boxes’ and feed them. Backyard gardens attract them. John Clayton from Mallabula remembers falling victim to the Ross River virus. “I well remember feeling the sting of a mosquito bite on the back of my neck. Three days later, a debilitating fatigue overwhelmed me. My GP said that it was probably ‘flu’ but it persisted. I also suffered muscle and joint pains.” “After reading about the symptoms, I asked my doctor to test me for it. The diagnosis proved positive. I felt unbelievably tired for over two years after that but slowly regained my strength. The good news is that it can’t
be spread from person to person and I’m immune from future infection.” So bad is the possum plague in New Zealand that without a government eradication program they estimate that the current 28million population would grow to some 50million! You can buy possum meat. Local butcher Ron Curry could order it in for you along with crocodile, camel, buffalo, kangaroo and mutton bird. Traps are effective in catching possums but rules governing their release mean that it will make little difference to their overall population. The best way to guard against Ross River is to wear loose fitting garments, use an insect repellent and don’t venture outside around dawn and dusk. It would also help to get rid of stagnant water found in old tyres, buckets and containers around your property.

q John Clayton, from Mallabula fell victim to the mosquito borne virus.
A DECADE or so back some 120 residents of Port Stephens (including three teachers at Tanilba Bay School) fell victim to the Ross River virus. This disease can be hard to diagnose as the symptoms often mimic other medical conditions. A specific test is needed. A fever, muscle and joint pains,a rash and fatigue are often indicators. Newspaper reports have it that this year there has been a five-fold increase in cases in NSW. But where does it come from and how is it spread? Despite a long dry summer, mosquitoes, which transmit the virus, are still breeding in the salt water marshes created by the Christmas king tides. The main hosts of the Ross River virus are kangaroos and wallabies. Very few of

The Clean up Australia Day commences at 8.30am, and registrations are at Medowie community centre front entrance. Registration covers all participants against injury or accidents and collects the statistics for our community’s involvement. Children under the age of 18 require some adult supervision. It is recommend that all participants wear solid footwear, sun smart clothing, a hat and gardening gloves. The Tidy Towns and Lions Club will supply bags, some spare gloves and loan pick up sticks. q Young Citizen of the Year award recipient, Carissa Maher, is looking forward to tertiary studies.
IN what is shaping up to be a big year for Port Stephens Young Citizen of the Year, Carissa Maher has been accepted into the University of Newcastle’s Bachelor of Social Science, majoring in Criminology. After being bestowed the honour at the Port Stephens annual Australia Day award ceremony at Nelson Bay, Miss Maher will now turn her attention to tertiary studies. Miss Maher is looking forward to starting her tertiary studies, which will expand into a double degree when she introduces the Bachelor of Laws to her program in 2018. A high achiever, Miss Maher told Medowie News Of The Area, “I am excited to get started on my career path and really looking forward to socialising and meeting new people.” “After my University
studies my plan is to become a NSW Police Prosecutor.” Of receiving the Port Stephens award, Miss Maher told Medowie News Of The Area, “I am extremely grateful and privileged to be the 2017 recipient of the award.” “Receiving it has further encouraged me to chase my dreams whilst supporting my local community as much as I can and to continue being a voice for those living with a chronic, invisible illness.” Miss Maher also encourages other young people to become actively involved in the local community, adding, “I encourage all young people to find what they love to do and do it daily, incorporating in into their local community wherever possible.” “Join or volunteer at a local sporting club, volunteer with the rural firies or just get out there and be a voice for what you are passionate about, it’s extremely rewarding.”

Medowie Christian School Leaders By Rachael VAUGHAN IN the next installment of the introduction of new School Leaders in our feeder primary school and high schools, Medowie Christian School is proud to announce their school leaders for 2017. News Of The Area met with the chosen group of representatives from this impressive coeducational Christian kindergarten to Year 12 school. Medowie Christian School prides themselves on providing high quality education in a supported environment, where children and young people can reach their God-given potential, and prepare them for life in our ever-changing world. The role of the School leaders for the primary and secondary schools at Medowie Christian School is one of great importance. MCS is committed to nurturing the whole child with personal development initiatives such as student leadership programs, Shine, Strength, self
esteem and social awareness programs, as well as learning support programs, chaplain and counsellor/psychologist support. The development of values, ethics and character is embedded throughout school life. Service and Mission are an integral part of the school culture, and provide students with opportunities to help fulfill the vision of the school by serving others in the community, both locally and globally. Medowie Public School is a community school where students, parents, staff and members of the community value and support each other.
The school’s core values of respect, responsibility and quality underpin the daily operation of the school, and will be an integral part of the way the Captains, ViceCaptains and Councillors will be expected to conduct themselves. These strong core values will require the school leaders to be strong, confident and dedicated. Dear Jasminda,
My son has just started high school and I’m finding all the homework overwhelming. Any suggestions?
By Simone JOHNSON
WILLIAMTOWN RAAF Base had a busy week of events, hosting a fleet of Porsches for a photo opportunity as well as Queensland’s Indigenous NRL under 16’s team both in the same day. Taking place on 9 February, a fleet of Porsche Panamera Gen2 cars rolled out onto the airfield for a unique photo opportunity in anticipation of the national press launch of the Panamera Turbo and Panamera 4S luxury sports vehicles. The last time Porsche got up close to Air Force assets was at the Williamtown Air Show held six years ago when Paul Ellis, Public Relations Director of Porsche Cars Australia, raced a Hawk 127

Mrs RM, Bundabah If only high school was like Fame or School of Rock. There’d be no bars on windows and no economics teachers in high-waisted shorts obsessed with stagflation theories. Just waif-like figures named Coco pirouetting down hallways and quirky types playing keyboards, all to beguiling tune of Stevie Nicks’ Edge of Seventeen. Just like the white winged dove sings a song sounds like she’s singin’, ooh, baby, ooh, ooh . . . Okay, Mrs RM, I had a little moment then, but I’m back. Sweaty, but back. High school is overwhelming. Oh, the flashbacks of Mandy Brutus and her jujitsu holds in the playground. The after-school detentions. Hiding in the toilet during swimming carnivals. It’s survival of the fittest out there. And then there’s the burden of homework. Your homework, by the sound of it. Don’t be too disappointed with your results, Mrs RM. A ‘B’ for Prudence’s English assignment is no measure of your true ability. Keep striving along with all the other hapless parents out there until Australia finally catches up with the educators in Finland. They know that homework is nothing but payback from exhausted teachers and a testing system that they refer to, in hushed tones, as Napalm, not Naplan. Now go and make that mobile using this week’s spelling list, five toilet rolls, yellow cellophane and hand-knitted coat hangers. Due tomorrow.
q Personnel from No 26 Squadron, four Porsche models from Porsche Car Australia, a Panther Fire Truck and the CHC Search and Rescue Helicopter, gather on the RAAF Base Williamtown flight line. Lead in Fighter aircraft on the runway. While there was no car racing on the day, some lucky RAAF personnel had the fortunate experience to drive the vehicle a short distance. One of the lucky drivers later described the experience as “smooth, very smooth”. Merely 100 metres from the vehicles, the Base also welcomed the Queensland
Indigenous NRL Under 16’s team during their season tour to the Hunter region. The visit formed part of the Air Force’s commitment through specialist recruiting initiatives to engage Indigenous people from remote, regional and urban localities. Base Commander, Wing Commander Cornell told News Of The Area, “We have a close relationship with
the people of Worimi and an extension of that is our willingness to showcase Air Force assets and careers to the wider Indigenous communities when the opportunity presents itself.” Players and support staff were provided the opportunity to view static aircraft displays which included a RAAF Hawk 127 Lead in Fighter aircraft, a F/A-18 Hornet and other
capability displays. Later that afternoon, RAAF Base personnel and members from Defence Force Recruiting were on hand to guide and provide insight into the employment opportunities available to Indigenous people in the Royal Australian Air Force. Some aspiring Indigenous candidates were already at various stages of their recruitment process.
Carpe diem, Jasminda.
MotoX Legend Goes Jerky By Geoff WALKER
WHAT does an Australian MotoX legend do when injuries put him out of competitive racing at an early age? In the case of Luke George, he became a mentor for the next generation of riders and started his own ‘Boot Camp’ at the family property near the Oyster Cove turnoff. The 2008 National champion and Kawasaki rider has also created a new business enterprise and he can’t keep up with the demand. “I did some deer hunting on a friend’s property,” he said. “Deer are considered a pest an a threat to the
environment. With so much venison on hand I decided to turn it into jerky.” “It tasted great so I started up a business producing a unique product. It’s taken off like a rocket. I now employ two people and will be moving to a commercial kitchen at Bob’s Farm shortly.” “I buy my venison from a wholesaler,” Luke said. Luke isn’t the only local producing jerky. Glen Curry from Tilligerry Quality Meats also makes beef jerky which is very popular with the locals. ‘Jerky’ had its origin with native tribes which sun dried and salted their meat to preserve it. Cowboys packed it in their saddlebags and the military

Medowie Christian School also has four houses; Hunter, Allyn, Paterson and Williams. The sports house captains and vice captains for 2017 are: Jessica Lutz, Ned Twelvetree, Connor Witenden, Keira McGregor, Jemima Anderson,
Reuben Blatch, Tiarna Chester, William Cook, Alexander White, Indyah Siggins, Malachi Barnes, Kathleen Churchill, Jordan Tumes, Kaiis Doherty and Scarlett Vetter. Sports captains play an important role in motivating other students and promoting a healthy lifestyle, not just because a healthy lifestyle has enormous benefits, but
because sports captains are in a better position than most to influence the younger age groups at their school. Sandy White, parent of one of the house captains, told News Of The Area, “This is a wonderful role for the students to be active in their school with teachers and students alike.” “My son is loving the
VALENTINE’S Day saw golf lover Michael Lloyd of Corlette score a hole in one for the fourth time in his life. Michael, a member of the Skins Group (a social offshoot of Nelson Bay Golf Club) was on a day out with other members to the Pacific Dunes course in Medowie. The magnificent shot was made at the 17th hole, listed at 185m and par three. Pacific Dunes is a world class golf course, ranked at number 54 in the Golf Digest top 100, making this an even more prestigious achievement. In acknowledgement, Pacific Dunes have sent Michael a certificate and a 17th hole flag as a momento.
Mike believes he has also won a $150 prize from the Skins group. Jamie Hook, a professional golfer at the club told News Of The Area, “The 17th hole is one of the toughest so this is a great achievement.” Michael, who is also a Toastmaster, only took up golf at the age of 50, after years of soccer had taken its toll on his knees. He is now a golf addict. “This was the best hole in one so far. It is a long and difficult par three. It was recorded on my certificate as 164m,” he said. Mike also added that he has a firm philosophy of being able to achieve anything in life. “You need a plan and then begin making steps towards what it is you want”. I’m sure we’ll be hearing of Ace number five before too long.
opportunity to help all the kids get involved in sports, and to just have a go.” “He personally is learning great leadership skills, and it is healthy fun for all. News Of The Area has no doubt that these young people are ready for the responsibilities of this role.
