We Need A Cure
By Mandy ELLIS
EACH person has their own reason for participating and supporting this year’s Shave for a Cure. For Cheryl Rees from Salamander Bay, it was in honour and respect for her nephew Shaun Egan, 24 year old, fit, healthy, a full time mechanic and adoring
daddy. Shaun had been suffering from a bad back for a while, which he put down to the nature of his job, until one day the pain reached an excruciating level which is when he took it more seriously. A week later he was vomiting blood and was

entirely possible that we could make the lifestyles of ‘Beach and Country’ work well together. The Gold Coast and Hinterlands have developed a wonderful tourism relationship for those wanting getaways from the coast, so the same could be said for Port Stephens and Dungog tourism working together to offer the ‘best of all worlds’ to tourists to travel between Port Stephens and the Barringtons for different experiences. Port Stephens and Dungog could be the Surf and Turf of New South Wales.

AFTER the long, drawn out fiasco that was the to and fro indecision of whether Port Stephens and Newcastle Councils would be forced to merge by the State Government, it is little wonder that many Port Stephens locals are feeling less than enthusiastic about the voluntary merger with Dungog that has now been put on the table. One Dungog resident, Lisa Connors, who part of the promerger group at Dungog, feels that it is a lack of facts and information being shown to Port Stephens residents that is getting in the way of locals seeing the positives of this potential Country to Coast merger. Lisa met with News Of The Area and shared her thoughts, saying, “There are so many roles and responsibilities that used to be Government functions, which now fall on the councils.” “Small councils like Dungog struggle to keep up, yet would be able to make vital contributions to bigger councils like Port
Stephens if they were to join as one.” “Departments and positions that small councils can’t possibly keep afloat would be much better supported in larger councils where it makes sense for those departments to be in place for a larger body of people, with two councils of support working together,” she said. A major criticism of the proposed merger has been how long a newly merged council, each entering with their own concerns and problems, would take to be a functioning team. Reports suggest a seamless functioning merged council may take upwards of ten years, but Lisa Connors argues that those years of ‘ironing out’ would be worth it and that those opposing the merger are perhaps not armed with all the facts about the offer on the table. Lisa said, “Dungog’s offer from Port Stephens is conditional, with no rate freeze, an immediate or rapid movement towards rate parity, and the government putting in at least $15 million to

Help For Learning By Sarah STOKES
AN innovative and evidencebased therapy service for children with learning difficulties including dyslexia, autism, sensory processing, ADHD plus other conditions is looking to bring its program to the Nelson Bay area. Hunter Learning Clinic has only been open a short while, but the response and interest has been overwhelming in a positive way for Director and Founder Natalie Williamson. The clinic is currently based in Newcastle and Maitland, but Natalie also has a few clients in the Port Stephens area. If she can attract some more she will be able to open an office here. Natalie uses a MultiSensory Structured Language (MSL), which is the recommended pedagogy (method of learning) by the Australian Dyslexia Association.
Synthetic phonics is used as well in this direct, explicit teaching method. It is considered the gold standard by many in terms of tutoring for children with learning difficulties. The main tenets of the therapy are that learning must be visual, auditory and kinaesthetic, so that senses are engaged alongside movement during learning. Natalie employs various methods to make learning fun, including using a jumping ladder, Nerf guns, as well as fun apps and videos. Natalie is a qualified teacher, has trained with the Australian Dyslexia Association and is currently undertaking a Masters in Special Education (Learning Difficulties). She has experience of dyslexia with her own child so can empathise with parents and children. Natalie told News Of The Area, “I’m looking forward to
expanding my practice out at the Bay and helping many more children who may have a learning difficulty/disability.” There are many programmes that promise to help children with literacy but not all are equal. MSL is peer-reviewed and evidence-based, meaning it has been subjected to the highest levels of scrutiny by leading international academics. It does not cost a fortune and NDIS funding can be used for sessions. One on one, small group or skype sessions are offered and she works with clients from age six to adult. Natalie urges parents not to wait if they suspect their child may have a learning difficulty. Dyslexia can be diagnosed from the age of five-and-ahalf and it is imperative that learning plans be put in place as soon as possible. In an geographical area that is often lacking in

First Lady Probus By Jewell DRURY AS a sign of the times, the first lady President of Probus Port Stephens has just been announced. The club recently celebrated in fine style at their Changeover Lunch held at Soldiers Point Bowling Club, following their Annual General Meeting. I have been dating a great girl for a few months now, things seem to be getting more serious between us as she has just introduced me to her mother. What advice do you have for me? I really like this girl, but not only is her mother as mad as a cut snake, whenever I look at this girl all I see now is what she will look like in 20 years. Mr PC Shoal Bay Dear PC, At this stage in your relationship you should be focusing on the emotional connection between you and your new love. You should be dining and skulking and swooning and seducing like Hugh Grant in every single movie he’s ever been in. This is a time of pure rapture, enchantment and puppy-dog eyes. All of us fade, men and women, from blossoming magnolias through to dried up mushrooms (you know, the ones you find up the back of the fridge after seven months). So focus on what is on the inside. As Shakespeare said, “Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, and therefore is winged Cupid painted blind” or words to that effect. He also said, “thou cream-faced loon”, but that is an unfortunate aside. I’d be more worried that, in your words, the mother is “as mad as a cut snake”. Is that a genetic trait you want to pass down to your offspring? Look out for delusions, hallucinations, signs of “sundowning” like the mad nana in The Visit. Anyway, it could be worse. Some lovely ladies end up looking like their fathers. Surely a crepey décolletage and a few chin hairs is preferable to a beer gut and a gammy leg. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Ladies Lunch for Cancer By Jo FINN
IF you want to enjoy a great day out at Mavericks and do your bit for cancer, then why not join the young and young at heart on Saturday 1 April for the Ladies Long Lunch at Nelson Bay. The inaugural event is raising money for the NSW Cancer Council. “The community has really got behind the event. I’ve been blown away by the wonderful generosity of so many local businesses and individuals,” organiser Kylie Russell said. “We have several thousand dollars’ worth of items to auction off and give away already, it’s amazing.” Mavericks is a beautiful venue to spend the afternoon, and the event features the talented Matt McLaren. Lunch and drinks and loads of raffle prizes will be on offer. All proceeds will go to the Cancer Council’s campaign to help support Australians affected by cancer. Locally, the Cancer Council provides free transport to treatment for all patients
in Port Stephens through a partnership with two local cancer support groups, and in the past year has provided 65 local Port Stephens patients with financial assistance. The organisation also recently launched a Palliative Carer Respite service and the first family supported was from Port Stephens. All Cancer Council services are free and fully funded by community donations and fundraising such as the Ladies Long Lunch.
The event has the backing of local groups such as the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group and the Tomaree Prostate Cancer Support Group. Port Stephens MP Kate Washington has thrown her support behind the day as well, picking up a ticket herself and donating a privileged one-on-one experience as one of the many prizes. “I’m so inspired by my brave friends and relatives who have taken on their
personal cancer battles and the medical teams who help them through it,” Ms Russell said. “We still have a few tickets remaining, so get in quick if you want to be part of the fun,” Ms Russell said. Tickets are $85 and must be pre-purchased from https://www.trybooking. com/OKYH. For further information contact Kristy Russell on 0417 498 623 or go to https://www.facebook.com/ pg/LadiesLongLunch/.

Wandering path fit for a King By Mandy ELLIS
FORTUNATELY, the rain clouds held off for the official opening of the wandering path at Bill King Aged Care Facility, Fingal Bay. Volunteers and pink ladies work tirelessly to ensure the residents of the facility have everything they need. Mollie Carter, President of the craft group for many years, said, “My mum and dad had Alzheimer’s and at the time I was so busy with their care and needs that I wasn’t able to do fun crafts with them.” “For me, this is an opportunity to support those going through what
I did and the reward is seeing the pure joy on the residents’ faces when we create something worthwhile and practical for them.” The volunteers organise two fashion parades per year and hold a craft fair annually. The volunteers are busy year round making and creating items for the craft fair, which raises much needed funds to support those most vulnerable within our community. Due to the dedication of the volunteers, a wandering path has just been completed and is now being enjoyed by residents. Shirley Aldred is one
such person. She told News Of The Area, “It’s really beautiful, you can come out here and feel very relaxed.” Carole Gorman, Care Co-Ordinator, said, “We are so grateful to the craft ladies and volunteers for the garden and what they do for our residents, they add a lot of value to the lives of those in our care.” “We are also fortunate to work for a very supportive organisation.” Preparations are well underway for the upcoming Fingal Haven Village Craft Fair where you will be able to pick up a bargain and support a necessary service within the community.

Letham: Roads a Central Concern By Jo FINN
NEWS Of The Area’s coverage of local concerns continues this week following a meeting with the Tomaree branch of the Labor Party. Labor’s Tomaree branch president Heather Letham said that their last meeting involved discussions around candidates for the September council elections. “We have a combined branch representative Municipal Committee who will be making
recommendations on candidates who we will support,” Ms Letham said. “Branch members work hard throughout the year especially during elections.” Labor’s Tomaree Branch sees funding cuts to services as one of the biggest challenges facing local residents. Ms Letham said Nelson Bay road was a particular concern. “The branch wants to highlight the growing problems and capacity on sections of the NSW Government controlled
Nelson Bay Road, Ms Letham said. Apart from “adequate funding for roads and schools”, Ms Letham, the branch is also “vigorously opposed” to high rise developments in Nelson Bay. Ms Letham said that local issues were always high on the agenda at a State, Federal and a local level. “We target local issues that affect our residents including support to mental health forums, aged care forums, support to the Yacaaba Centre and
Williamtown contamination issues.” Sensible development and building heights, funding to save koala habitats and condemnation of Centrelink’s debt recovery system were other areas of focus. The party has been active on the Nelson Bay Peninsula since the mid 1960s. The branch meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month at the Nelson Bay Diggers. Heather Letham has been president for the past three years.

You Can Sit With Me Five little words can change a little life.

Hands in, making a stand against bullying.
FIVE little words can change a little life. The powerful statement ‘You Can Sit With Me’ is being used to promote the very special new initiative aimed at ensuring children never feel alone.
Last week, schools acknowledged the seventh National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence on 17 March and News Of The Area spoke with local students about one special program for young people. ‘You Can Sit With Me’ is an anti-bullying campaign

and kindness initiative. Aimed at battling childhood anxiety, depression and loneliness, this remarkably special program involves bright yellow wristbands worn by the students to indicate they are happy to sit with someone new.
Emblazoned with ‘YOU CAN SIT WITH ME’, these bands offer silent support to a student who may be nervous about finding someone to talk to, ask for support or simply sit and eat lunch. These bands tell everybody in a school, sports club or community group, that the wearer welcomes anyone to sit with them, whatever the persons culture, religion, grade or age.

Raising the Roof By Sarah STOKES
TOMAREE High School in conjunction with the Real Futures Foundation has launched a gofundme campaign to raise $2000 to put a roof on its new barbecue shelter. The shelter was constructed last year by
pupils as part of a project that began with a $3000 grant from the Council that managed to grow to $20,000 with the generous support of local businesses. This was a welcome addition to the Indigenous garden and fire pit with seating area. Given the recent bad
weather, a roof is needed more than ever. Nobody wants a soggy sausage sizzle. The fund is seeking donations from parents and members of the community to contribute any amount they can. Any donation over $2 is tax deductible.

The money will be used to purchase a Colorbond roof and professional labour, due to restrictions for pupils on working at heights. Students can assist with labour work on the ground. The Real Futures Foundation is a charity that works with disengaged pupils at Tomaree High School and St Philips. It is solely based in the Port Stephens area. Working on the project has given the students a sense of pride and accomplishment and teamwork skills. The Foundation is also seeking local businesses that would be interested in sponsoring its work. There are various options available that come with a wide range of benefits for the business. Details can be found at www.realfutures.com.au. The gofundme campaign can be found at www. gofundme.com by entering Tomaree High School or ‘A roof for over our heads’.
Putting the Port in Sport THEY’RE usually harder to herd than cats, but as many as 20 crews will contest the Australian Sport Boat Association’s (ASBA) national titles from April 7-9 as part of the 2017 Sail Port Stephens race week. At the same time, around a dozen super-charged Super 12s will vie for their NSW state title, the strongest fleet to date. Both associations represent a myriad of models from different designers, all coming together under development umbrellas but with rating systems to level the playing field. At ASBA regattas it’s common to see early-90s veterans like Elliott 7s and Magic 25s competing with cutting-edge newcomers such as Shaw 650s, Viper 640s and VX1s, the Jamaican sprinters of the yachting world. Association president Chris Bland reckons sport boats are the “only way to fly”. “My Shaw is 6.5-metres long and carries 850 square feet [80 square metres] of sail downwind. We regularly see 15 knots but the best I’ve had is 32 knots – frightening to say the least, but it can be done.”
“Being a development class, we also have guys constantly pushing the limits of the rules, which is what we’re encouraging,” Mr Bland said. “Last year the regatta offered some spectacular sport boat sailing and this year won’t disappoint either.” “We’re going to have 10 boats, no risk, but more likely 15 and as many as 20. At last year’s nationals in Queensland we had nine boats, so it’s looking better,” he said.

sisterships, four Melges 32s, the Farr 36 Toy Story and more. “No one is designing to a rule because that quickly makes boats obsolete. It’s all about having fun and going fast without stress,” Mr White said. “You don’t have to continually tweak your boat, but if owners want to try things we’re not going to stop them. Go for your life.” For more information see www.sailportstephens.com. au.

Superstars Strike Again
q Zayli Lovette, Dylan Merrett, Kristy Dalmazzo and Sebastian Scarcella enjoying a game of ten pin. Photo by Square Shoe Photography By Mandy ELLIS THE Superstars team consists of a group of local families who are parents or carers of those living with a disability. All ages and capabilities are welcome and with a common set of goals of having fun, social inclusion and camaraderie in an environment where parallel play is the accepted norm, this group of Superstars enjoy their weekly visit for ten pin bowling at Salamander Super Strike. At their recent competition, which is held every 15 weeks, Dylan Merrett and his team mate took out first place. It is a friendly weekly meet up with a ‘pick a box’ treat for every person who scores a spare or strike. Through the support of his mum, (Judy Merrett), Dylan said, “I love bowling, it is the best thing.” Judy said, “When I bring Dylan here, he is a different child, he is happy when playing and as the aim of the game is to knock down the pins, he can see easily when he has done well.” “The staff here are so understanding and supportive, they welcome the group each week and know everyone by name, which makes a big difference.” “It’s great to get together

with other parents and carers and to see the guys supporting one another and having fun,” Judy told News Of The Area. “With very little available in the evenings for those with a disability, it’s important to create activities for them.” The Superstars get together at Superstrike every Tuesday, 4 – 5.00pm, and they stay for two games. “Whilst we are not an official ‘group’, everyone is welcome to turn up, join in and help us expand our Superstars,” Judy said. Wins for Him-Do By Mandy ELLIS
SPARRING, individual and team patterns, speed and high jumping kick breaking, all components of the 2017 Taekwondo Tournament supported by Him Do Tae Kwon Do and held at Tomaree High School on 11 - 12 March. Outstandingly, Team Him Do brought home 26 medals, a great selection of bronze, silver and gold and four trophies. Peter Hallett of Nelson Bay secured two of the four in Best Technical and Best Poomsae. For the second year the Best Overall Athlete went to Jake Edwards. Best Overall Team Score trophy was awarded to Team Him Do, with an amazing score of 17. “I enjoy and appreciate the camaraderie of this Tournament, it is good to see the club do so well,” Peter
www.newsofthearea.com.au
Hallett told News Of The Area. “As an instructor, it is very rewarding to see students start with little confidence in the sport, to the point where they compete in events such as this one.” Hamish Clark, eight years old, again brought home medals in his chosen field, two silver and one bronze. Hamish said, “I get excited and nervous about the tournament and feel very proud of myself when I have competed.” Speaking with Ronald Bergan, Master Instructor at Him Do Tae Kwon Do, it was evident how very proud he is of his students, speaking highly of his team, he said, “The Team went very well, I am especially proud with those who received the major awards, and to top it off, we won the Best Overall Team score.” “Out of the six major awards we brought home
q four, this is a testament to the dedication and calibre of students and instructors we
have here.” Ron would like to take the opportunity to thank the
sdasdadadadadadadadadadad
community for their support and interest during the tournament.
