New Commander takes flight By Charlie ELIAS
‘YOUNG men and women contemplating a career as an Air Force pilot can look forward to years of exhilarating and challenging flying in modern aircraft. It is a job like no other.’ This is the RAAF’s preamble for attracting modern-day recruits, yet it sums up perfectly the fascinating career so far of newly appointed Commander Air Combat Group (ACG), Air Commodore (AIRCDRE) Mike Kitcher at RAAF Base Williamtown. For AIRCDRE Kitcher, who recently took over the reins from the newly promoted Air Vice Marshal Steve Roberton, the rise in rank from officer cadet to one star general has been

MEDOWIE Coles has a group of smiling faces that customers and staff alike have come to look forward to seeing on Tuesdays each week. As part of the Life Skills program, students in the Senior Support Classes at Irrawang High, have been travelling by bus to Coles Medowie every Tuesday in the school term for
over ten years. Accompanied by their teacher Ms Georgina Ward and Student Learning Support Officer Mrs Irene O’Rourke, the group of 14 students have the opportunity to practice their money handling skills, whilst on public transport and also when they are purchasing their morning tea from the store.
At Coles from 9.3012.30pm, the students assist the staff and learn many new skills along the way including; facing the shelves and keeping them clean and tidy, recycling, removing damaged goods from the shelves and helping to rotate stock. Two new probationary constables will each be stationed at Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens LACs with the final probationary constable stationed at the Central Hunter LAC. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC congratulated the new recruits on graduating from the Goulburn Police Academy and thanked them for their commitment to preventing and disrupting crime. “I would like to welcome our newest officers to the region, and extend our gratitude to them for devoting their careers to such an
honourable cause,” Mr MacDonald said. “I know the qualifications our officer/s have completed at the Police Academy, together with the on-thejob training they will undertake at the Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens and Central Hunter Local Area Commands will ensure they are more than adequately prepared to step into this important role. “Policing can be an extremely challenging profession. Our officers encounter the best and the worst of humanity in the line of duty, so I’m very pleased that our community will benefit from the enthusiasm of five new officers starting their career on the beat.” Minister for Police Troy Grant said the NSW Liberals & Nationals Government has undertaken to boost

Bill Taylor is a 70-year-old volunteer firefighter and former paramedic, motorcycle cop, Air Force member and Army reservist. While both reside in Medowie, the pair had never met before the Goodwins decided to take the family to the popular field day at Tocal in May. “I was manning the Medowie rural fire brigade stall when Carter – along with mum and dad Sam and Alex, twin Milla and older brother Hudson – came along and I immediately noticed his attraction to a replica model of a fire truck I had constructed years before,” Mr Taylor, who has survived bowel cancer and stroke, recalled. “Carter just loved the truck so after a while I asked for permission from his parents to build something similar as a gift. “They approved and I

q Never forgotten – Margaret reflects on a photo of Frede in Bill Lunney’s ‘Forgotten Fleet 2.’ His service medals are beside the book.
MEDOWIE authors Bill and Ruth Lunney’s book ‘Forgotten Fleet’ went to a second edition hard cover issue due to its popularity. Bill served in the small ships and Ruth is remembered as a respected high school teacher at Raymond Terrace. Bill has now passed on but the memories of this little known WW2 flotilla stay well and truly alive for 98 year old Margaret Oulund from Lemon Tree Passage. To set the scene for our tale we have to backtrack to the dark days of the Pacific War. The Americans had arrived to push back the Japanese but they had a problem: they had no little ships to ferry troops ashore or to resupply the isolated units. To solve this, their army rounded up any civilians in Australia with maritime experience to man a rag-tag fleet of boats for the job. The ‘Stella Maris,’ a Port Stephens oyster boat was one of the craft requisitioned and Frede Oulund, a Danish merchant mariner was one those who volunteered to serve. Margaret met Frede at a
dance in Sydney and they were married in 1943. This had her subsequently classified as an ‘alien’ but all was rectified when Frede was granted citizenship in 1951. At Milne Bay Frede was wounded by shrapnel and a bullet in the knee from a Japanese air attack. Just two weeks later he was back in service. He later captained one of the little ships. After the war, The couple ran several small businesses before retiring to Lemon Tree Passage. Margaret has a slight balance problem these days but she leads an independent life in her two storey home. Groceries are delivered to the doorstep and she uses her ‘stairlifter’ to get them up to the kitchen. She makes blankets for hospitals. Family gave her a tablet for her 96th birthday which she regularly uses but she has had a little bit of trouble since they put her on facebook. She’s working on it. ‘Forgotten Fleet 2’ is available through the library service.

Present at the evening, and ready to take questions on Tilligerry issues, were Mayoral candidate Geoff Dingle, Mayor and Central ward Councillor candidates Ryan Palmer and Steve Tucker, and Central Ward Councillor candidates Jenny Battrick and Sarah Smith. Geoff Dingle told News Of The Area, “Council needs to restore faith with the Tilligerry community, and work on a number of big issues to show them their community is important to the council.” “We need to encourage landlords and owners to work
with Council to rejuvenate the business centres, and a cycle way between Tanilba, Mallabula and Lemon Tree Passage would do much to make the community further connected.” “A multipurpose community centre on the Tilligerry Peninsula is also long overdue, with proposals that have been hanging around for years requiring some leadership to make it all happen,” he said. Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “It was a great night at the Tilligerry Habitat with great audience participation.” “Roads have been a huge issue on the Tilligerry Peninsula and it is about time the issues are put to bed.” “We also need to ensure
that we are doing all we can to engage and look after the youth on the Tilligerry Peninsula, with into youth programs and ensuring that the mental health needs of our youth are looked after.” Jenny Battrick told News Of The Area, “My aim is to improve the bus interchange at TBPS, with dedicated parking area and stand alone bus area for safety.” “High on my agenda also is a connected pathway through

Pub thanks the Firies
FOR many years, the Medowie Rural Fire Brigade have provided Medowie and its surrounding areas with an extremely important service. The protection of our property and our lives from the threat of fire in its many forms and also invaluable assistance to Police and Ambulance at various types of incidents. The staff and patrons at Medowie’s Bull n Bush Hotel decided they wanted to give back to these fine men and women and to use the money they had raised from their
weekly raffles to purchase something for our firies to say thank you for their service. “The brigade is such a vital part of our community,” said Licensee Eileen Clark. “We wanted to do something to give back to them and show our appreciation, especially since as volunteers they leave their families and give up their time for us.” Staff and patrons raised over $2900 and with this money were able to purchase some lighting equipment and
some work shirts. With the money left over and a bit of clever artwork from Jolene Smith, wife of the brigade’s Senior Deputy Captain, they were also able to purchase some social t-shirts for the brigade members. “We were thrilled to be able to do something personal for each of the men and women in the brigade and to purchase some lighting equipment to hopefully make their job a little easier in future incidents that may occur,” Ms Smith said.

‘Grubby politics’ slammed

“THEY must be so worried,” was the response from the Labor Party’s Des Maslen following the furore over the past week involving a couple of Facebook posts and the sabotage of a political sign. Mr Maslen, who is heading the ALP mayoral and Central Ward councillor tickets, has hit out at his opponents and insists that he won’t be bullied. He did, however, concede it had been a tough week: firstly with the reaction from a Facebook comment made six years ago while working in Western Australia, and
later with the cutting down of an ALP billboard on Nelson Bay Road at Bobs Farm. “The sign went up on 3 August and just a few days later vandals, most likely political opposers, have used a grinder to cut through the steel posts to knock it down,” the 52-year-old Medowie father-of-three said. “I can’t believe [whomever did this] would go to such lengths. “But it won’t deter me or the party, the billboard is going back up but this time with reinforced steel and concrete.” As for the political backlash over his Facebook posts, Mr Maslen insisted much of what was printed
was taken out of context and that he was neither sexist nor homophobic. “It was a lack of judgement on my part. I have apologized and I am looking forward to moving on.” Mr Maslen saved his greatest criticism for his political opposers, slamming them for their “dirty pool” tactics. “They are obviously worried about the impact our party is having on the polls. “We have said from day one of the election campaign that he will be focusing on local issues and that is what we will continue to do. “There is no need for the grubby politics,” he told News Of The Area.

Highest Honour For Scout By Rachael VAUGHAN
CONSIDERED the highest award any Scout can achieve, the Australian Scout Medallion is only awarded to a select group of individuals who have gone above and beyond the expectations of a regular Scout. Vietnam Vets Day By Rachael VAUGHAN
THE service for Vietnam Veterans Day in Medowie was a special event, with a sizable turnout from community members, RAAF personnel, decorated Defence members, returned service men and women, our Federal member, Councillors and students from all three Medowie Schools. Member for Paterson, Meryl Swanson, presented a sapling from the seed of the Lone Pine to the Medowie RSL sub-branch, speaking to the crowd about the special significance of this small sapling. Neil Biggar, Secretary of the Medowie RSL sub-Branch, told News Of The Area that they were delighted to accept the sapling, that will be planted in a special place at
the new Medowie Sports and Community Club. “The sub-Branch has always been a supporter of the Club, and looks forward to being able to hold meetings at the Club, which will hopefully be an incentive for more Medowie ex-service people to join the RSL, as well as become members of the Club.” Neil said. “The Medowie RSL also looks forward to being able to conduct some of its veterans’ assistance work from the Club’s meeting rooms, which is exciting us.” he added. The three Medowie schools were well represented, with students behaving in a manner their schools should be extremely proud of. Wirreanda Public School has the largest defence student population, with over 200 students from defence families.
The Defence School Liaison Officer, Karen Schieb, told News Of The Area, “It is wonderful to see the Defence community spirit in Medowie.” “We are so proud of what our Defence families bring to Medowie, and that the community embraces them.” Moving words from several speakers during the services set the scene for reflection on the sacrifices our service men and women made during the Vietnam War, and their fight for recognition upon their return home, and for many years afterward. News Of The Area would like to take this opportunity to thank our returned servicemen for their sacrifices and service, and congratulates Medowie RSL sub-branch for their moving and emotive service.

Charity begins at home By Rachael VAUGHAN
OUR Marauders rugby club are well known around town for their family friendly atmosphere all season, and their charitable efforts every year for their ‘Charity Round’. This year’s round will be held on Saturday 26 August. A full day of rugby will be played, including Premier Rugby. There will be a barbecue, and jumping castle for the kids.

Players on the day will be wearing a special one-off jumper for the game, and then auctioning them off after the game. The club has made some changes this year with choosing their charity for the year. They are embracing the ‘charity begins at home’ philosophy, and have chosen a charity that is based in Medowie and dear to the hearts of many Marauders clubmen and the greater
Medowie community. Choosing a charity is always hard for the club, as there are so many deserving groups out there. Mark Underwood, Coach of the Marauders, told News Of The Area, “It was amazing to see the team choose, without hesitation, to support SMS Australia on this charity day.” “Knowing how important this charity round is to our chosen group every year, it is extra special to be able to

choose a charity of one of our own team members.” “Our team calls themselves brothers, so on the decision day of who to choose, we chose the brotherhood.” he said. SMS Australia is a charity helped by a local family, who are just trying to get awareness for the rare syndrome the charity raises awareness and funds for.
“One minute she could be throwing furniture across the room, then the next minute she is smashing you with these amazing bear hugs.” Those hugs are what inspired Elsie’s nickname “The Bear”. For more information on SMS, please head to the Australian charities Facebook page ‘SMS Awareness Australia’.
Eric Tolhurst, a Marauders player, has a little daughter Elsie who was diagnosed with Smith Magenis Syndrome (SMS). Living with a child with Smith Magenis Syndrome can be extremely challenging, but also extremely rewarding. Elsie’s father Eric said,”Living with Elsie is like living with a really aggressive care bear.”

By Geoff WALKER IN the decade or so that it has been functioning, Tilligerry Auto Club has forwarded some $112 000 to the John Hunter Children’s Hospital Paediatric Oncology Unit. The money has been raised at the annual Motorama which draws around 500 vehicles of all descriptions vying for prizes in around 20 categories. The $10 entry fee, donations and raffles account for the bulk of the money presented to this very worthy charity. This year saw a gala dinner and presentation night at the White Wattle Restaurant in Tanilba’s Golf Club. President Ian Jones presented a cheque for $12 000 to hospital

representatives Carly Crispin and Jamie Chase. The club also presented a trophy to one of its own, Rob Shenn, who took out the best local car club prize for his beautifully presented 1996 Ford Mustang. The bulk of the money will go to refurbishment of the Oncology Unit at the hospital. Walls will be removed to create more bed space. Extra furnishings will also be
purchased to accommodate parents of the children being treated. Air conditioning units will be upgraded. Ian said that it was great to visit the hospital and see the smiling faces of the children. “We were particularly pleased that our work was mentioned in the NSW Parliament this year. This sort of thing makes all those hours of hard work somehow seem worthwhile.”

Congratulations to all the winners especially in such windy weather. We had a very respectable 27 players today. Barry Gale had a very pleasing 60 metre chip in on 18th, nice way to finish a game. Next week 25th August is the last round of the Championship and also our BBQ.
