Youth Week By Rachael VAUGHAN
MEDOWIE Skatepark was a buzz of activity and excitement last weekend as part of Youth Week. The Youth Week 2018 theme of “Unity through Diversity” rang true, with children of all ages coming together to celebrate. The event was hosted and run by the enthusiastic and dedicated guys at UP&UP, a Newcastle based Organisation that works to engage young people and the wider community in creative arts projects, with the aim of promoting self-expression, well-being and more inclusive communities. One of the parents in attendance with children of varying ages was Kaylene Staader, who told News Of The Area, “The kids had a go at spray painting art, decorating an old vinyl record each, and decorating one of the ramps at the skatepark.”

Kyra, who coincidentally passed from probationary member to full member whilst on deployment, told News Of The Area, “Our job was to do a strategic back burn to help tie in the edges of the fire and establish some containment lines.” “We went down with a task, and we got it done.” “We came home feeling pretty proud,” she said. Citizenship Ceremony Couple celebrate By Rachael VAUGHAN
THE Port Stephens community welcomed 17 new Australian citizens in a ceremony held at the Port Stephens Council Chambers last Wednesday. The ceremony was attended by the local Federal Member for Patterson Meryl Swanson MP with Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer presiding over proceedings. “It is such a great privilege to bear witness to the citizenship ceremonies of our newest Australians,” Ms Swanson told News Of The Area.
“Citizenship is a mark of identity and it’s a very considered choice.” “Many of us may take our Australian citizenship for granted, but we should never underestimate what a defining and life-changing choice it can be,” she said. Our newest ‘Aussies’ have come from all around the globe to call Port Stephens home, including the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Philippines, India, South Africa and Canada. One Port Stephens family who became as dinky-di as you and I were the Kruger family.
q Mayor Ryan Palmer, and Johan, Yolande, Brandon, Dylan Kruger and MP Meryl Swanson at their citizenship ceremony.
“We came over from South Africa in 2011 on a business visa and obtained our permanent residency in 2014, living in Medowie ever since we arrived,” Yolande Kruger told News Of The Area. “Immigration is a big and emotional roller coaster.’” “Leaving our family and friends behind, we decided to take this journey to build our lives far away from the known, but we have quickly integrated into the community, made friends and ensured that we embrace everything that Australia offers.” Yolande and her family, consisting of husband Johan and sons Brandon and Dylan, have been in Australia for almost seven years now and say they feel so privileged to be able to become Australian citizens. “We fell in love with Australia and its people and the ceremony was an emotional event for us with lots of happy tears,” said Yolande. “We can now finally call Australia home.” The Kruger family are expecting a new baby in September, so this week’s ceremony has given them an extra special feeling, that the whole family will be Australians when their new baby arrives to join their family.
their legal marriage By Rachael VAUGHAN
FOR Medowie couple Nellie Ingles and Glenys Creighton, the Marriage Equality vote was a turning point in their lives. They legally married at their home in Medowie or 23 March, after 21 years of a deep friendship that turned into love. Nellie and Glenys met in Nelson Bay, and shared their first home in Fingal Bay. The pair moved together to Newcastle with Glenys’ daughter Caitlin and bought a home there, before the three took a leap of faith and moved to Queensland to a beautiful acreage setting in the hinterland of Noosa at Cooroy. After a wonderful 12 years of wonderful memories and lifelong friends, they decided to move back to Port Stephens. Nellie told News Of The Area, “We looked for something that had the same community and country feel and we couldn’t go past Medowie.” “We both knew of Medowie, as Glenys’ father
was Mayor of Port Stephens twice and even has a street named after him not far from where we live.” In November 2017, Nellie and Glenys took a cruise to celebrate their 20 years together. The day they sailed back into Sydney was the day they were to announce the results of the postal vote. “We watched the announcement at my parents place in Sydney, and we all cried and hugged and popped the cork on a bottle of champagne.” Nellie said. “In December when the Bill passed in Parliament with a majority vote, we were so excited that we both got down on bended knee and proposed.” “WelI, I went first and then Glenys, because we couldn’t be on bended knees together because we had to help each other up off the floor.” she added, laughing. Their wedding was very much a family affair, surrounded by their loved ones from various states of Australia. Chrissy Hampton from Medowie was their honoured
celebrant for the occasion, and their children and close friends, Caitlin Cox, Tim Cox and Deborah Clark played important roles as MC’s and attendants. Ex Mayor of Port Stephens, Glenys’ father, Innes Creighton was in attendance with her step mother Jillian, as well as Nellie’s proud parents Norma and Allan Ingles. Nellie and Glenys had waited over twenty years to finally have their relationship acknowledged and recognised legally in Australia. Nellie said, “It surprised both of us as to how different we do feel.” “Being married has bought with it a new level of security we never had before.” “I feel a sense of pride that I am now married to the love of my life and can introduce her as my wife.” Glenys said, “I feel grounded, and it has bought me a sense of relief that we share exactly the same rights that all married couples have.” “We finally feel ‘normal’ because we are now just like all other married couples,” she said. News Of The Area congratulates Nellie and Glenys on their very special, and long awaited day.
Mallabula’s Sue McDermott pleased with hospital
JOHN Hunter Hospital has the distinction of being named after not one, but three eminent people. One was Captain John Hunter, a First Fleet Naval Officer and the second Governor of the colony; another was the brilliant English surgeon and the other was a certain John Irvine Hunter, an outstanding anatomist who died tragically young at just 26 years of age. Perhaps it was some sort of payback for the $100,000+ in donations made to the hospital by the Tilligerry Motorama. Maybe it was just the excellence of service delivered by this renowned Medical Centre. Whatever the case, the John Hunter Hospital is ‘the
best in the world’ according to Mallabula’s Sue McDermott. Stricken by an illness which saw her lose all leg movement, she was given an
MRI at The Hunter and then rushed to emergency surgery where a spinal abscess was operated on in a procedure lasting some five hours. q Nellie and Glenys with their family and friends at their wedding in their home in Medowie. Six weeks later and after numerous intravenous injections she was released into the care of her family. Today, some four months down the track she is back at her beloved local pool recuperating. “I can’t fault the medical care I was given,” she said. “Where else in the world

could you get this type of treatment – and all for free?” she added. “I was also close to tears when I received a ‘get well’ card from my friends at the aquatic centre.” “On top of this I was treated as some sort of celebrity when I returned.” “The caring staff even

offered to lower me into the heated pool in a special chair!” she said. “Fortunately, I was able to manage by myself. Tilligerry is a wonderful community. Why would you want to live anywhere else?” The 2018 Motorama is set down for 20 May.

Girls Rule!
By Heather SHARP
ON 18 April, 40 females from four martial arts school descended on the Imugi Martial Arts Dojang at Williamtown’s Union Hall to participate in an all-girls open martial arts
tournament. The tournament was held to provide girls of all ages and abilities to develop their skills in martial arts in a supportive environment. Schools represented included the hosts Imugi Martial
Arts, Chung Sa Nim (Master Instructor) Tony Gillespie; Iron Tiger Taekwondo, Master Di Carn; Hoshin Jujitsu, Sensei Rose Smith; and PDK Dojo, Sensei Ricky Rigor. The visitors all travelled from Sydney to participate in
the event Speaking with News Of The Area, Mr Tony Gillespie said, “I believe that the number one thing girls get from martial arts is an internal confidence that enables them to take on anything.”

arts builds not just physical, but emotional resilience, and this is what young women need the most.” The majority of participants were teenage girls and their skills ranged from only a few months of training through to many years and included martial artists with high profile achievements. A number of attendees are current national champions in their own styles, however many had never experienced the support and togetherness that came from participating in an all-girls event. Sensei Rose Smith also said, “Studying Martial Arts challenges the belief that women’s bodies are inherently vulnerable to attack and that men’s bodies are unstoppable.” “Learning a martial art is empowering, and can change women’s beliefs about what they are capable of, and what they are entitled to.” Ms Kelly O’Brien from Imugi Martial Arts said, “We started the day as four separate schools and styles but finished as one very extended martial arts family.” “We are very excited for the future of this event and look forward to many more friendly training opportunities together.”
