Our Languages Matter By Rachael VAUGHAN

q Worimi Proud - Brooke Roach and Justin Ridgeway getting ready for NAIDOC week.

NAIDOC week is coming up again, and there are some wonderful events planned for Port Stephens. National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) week takes place this year from 2-9 July, and is held yearly to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The theme of this year’s NAIDOC week celebrations is ‘Our languages matter’. Celebrations this year will be actively aimed at the need to hold on to Aboriginal language dialects in Australia. The week will emphasise and celebrate the unique and essential role that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages play in cultural identity, linking people to their land, and in the transmission of history, spirituality and rites.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from our three News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. Send your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,

At 8.00pm on a Sunday night, my son tells me that he has to dress up as a wolf for a performance. I do not have anything in the house that resembles a wolf. What should I do? Mrs PV, Salamander Bay

Well, Mrs PV, what you should do is nothing, because that will teach your son to be more organised and selfsufficient. By doing nothing, you will hopefully be bringing up a child who turns into an adult who is not rewarded by leaving unpleasant tasks to others – right up until the very last minute on a Sunday night when you should be drinking red wine in front of an open fire or watching a movie, or soaking in a bath. But that is not what you will do, because you are a mother and you will feel judged by the drama teacher if little Sonny-Jim turns up to his performance with wolf-like facial expressions drawn onto his face with your mascara and a pair of Explorer socks that do look slightly wolfish, because they’ve been washed with the towels and are covered in loose threads. Instead you will rant and rave and then you will go door-knocking, begging your neighbours for any costume items that looks remotely like they could be turned into a wolf with a few safety pins or some doublesided tape or a nail gun. Or else you will go up to the school, like a wolf in sheep’s clothing, and you will explain that your son has performance jitters and is suffering from some form of be-a-wolf-by-Monday-post-traumatic-stress-disorder and he will not be performing on Monday, but on Friday, when he is feeling better. And then, if that doesn’t work, you will just raise your face skywards and howl. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

INVICTUS Games champion, Squadron Leader Danny Jeffery will be back again to represent Australia at the games in Toronto later this year. Held on 23-30 September in the Canadian city, he will participate in the adaptive sports of wheelchair rugby, wheelchair tennis, and seated volleyball. News Of The Area met with Danny, who has clocked up an impressive 35 years in the RAAF, just prior to the announcement of his inclusion in the team to discuss his sporting achievements. Training and selection is not easy, with Danny having attended training and selection campus prior to the announcement of his selection into the team. Describing wheelchair rugby as “Demolition Derby in wheelchairs, it is always on the move and you are very bruised and battered at the end of the game,” Danny is keen to keep participating in the sport. Proud to represent Australia, he said, “I’ve represented in my uniform and this is a different field. I’d be humbled to represent Australia on the sporting field.” Talking about past participation at the Invictus Games, Danny said, “Everyone in the crowd is cheering for you as a veteran.” “It doesn’t matter what country you’re from.” “I’ve always been active in sports, this gives another reason to stay active.” “I am now a professional wheelchair tennis player too.” He was at the recent launch of the Sydney 2018 Invictus Games and again met HRH Prince Harry. “Prince Harry has a lot of empathy for fellow Vets

Doing Jodie proud

By Rachael VAUGHAN

THE Beanies for Brain Cancer fundraiser, a fundraising initiative of the Mark Hughes Foundation, was an outstanding success locally again this year. Local retailers, child care centres and schools had beanies for sale, as well as running fundraisers when beanies sold out nationwide. Woolworths Medowie sold a total of $3,000 worth of beanies, with several hundred dollars more in cupcake and cash donations. The talented girls of the bakery also decorated Minion and Brain-themed cupcakes for purchase, with all of the proceeds going to the charity.

Manager Mark Keating told News Of The Area, “We’d like to thank the community for getting behind our fundraising efforts as well as they did.” “From beanies to cupcakes, and even all the people donating their change at the self-serve checkouts instead of pocketing it,” he said. Mark Hughes visited Medowie Woolworths and Irrawang High School to meet locals and students, and to say thank you in person for raising much needed funds for this terrible disease. Jess Halloran, a Year 10 student at Irrawang High School, lost her Mum to brain cancer last August and

decided to head the Irrawang High fundraiser in her memory, with the assistance of her year advisor, Rachelle Burns. Staff and students who wore a beanie, and many who didn’t, gave a gold coin donation at assembly, and the school ran a cake stall at recess and a sausage sizzle at lunch. A special assembly was held in Mark Hughes’ honour, where he told his own personal story of battling brain cancer, before accepting a cheque for $1350 from Irrawang staff and students. Medowie Woolworths also named their fundraising efforts in memory of Jess Halloran’s Mum, Jodie, and

Family bands together By Rachael VAUGHAN

AT only two years of age, Isla-Rose began exhibiting worrying immune responses that affected her skin, food and environment allergies. Isla-Rose’s diagnosable conditions are complex, and multifaceted. She suffered immeasurable pain from every treatment available to her, and with little result. After three years of countless efforts and extensive research to improve her condition, her parents Rhea and Dave, now finally feel that Isla-Rose is on a recovery path. Her condition, and what she has gone through to be in the recovery phase she is in now, is nothing short of both catastrophic and impressive. Something that has been a pivotal part of this little girl’s recovery, is the creation of the family’s own skin care

product, that they created simply with Isla-Rose’s complex needs in mind. Rhea has been overwhelmed with the feedback from families across Australia who have turned to her products to help a family member to find relief from a variety of conditions. The skin care products are not a medical treatment, nor a cure, but are providing relief where many people have been unable to find relief previously. Rhea told News Of The Area, “This journey has taught us the essential need to listen to our bodies and to keep things real.” “Not just what we are eating, like organic produce, but also what we are putting on our skin and even just the things we have around us in our homes.” You can read more on the full breakdown of Isla-Rose’s

SOCIAL media app Snapchat has introduced a new feature that allows users to share their locations with their friends in real-time. This fun and usually innocent app is a popular pastime for adults and young people alike, so it is important that parents take one simple precaution to ensure their security and safety is not compromised without realising. According to recent app updates on Snapchat, you can now zoom in on Snapchat friends and know as precise a location as what street they are currently on. What’s worse is that the feature appears to be enabled by default, with users having to actively enter ‘Ghost mode’ in order to turn it off. With young kids loving the fantastic qualities that this fun app allows them, it is important for parents to get to know the settings of the app if they are not conversant with Snapchat, and switch their settings to this ‘ghost mode’. To do this, make sure the app is the

Labor announces candidates

By Rachael VAUGHAN

THE Port Stephens local

council elections have some new, and some well known, faces standing as candidates, with the announcement of

the Labor party endorsed candidates. The Mayoral candidate is Desmond Maslen.

The West Ward candidates are, in order of ticket, Giacomo Arnott, Bobbie Antonic, and Vicki

q Jim Morrison, Mel Pond, David Simm, Des Maslen, Meryl Swanson MP, Giacomo Arnott, Bobbie Antonic, Peter McKenna.

By Rachael VAUGHAN OUR rescue pets of the week are a mother and baby who have had a rough start in life. This ‘Mama and Bebe’ need to stay together forever. They are both incredibly sweet. Mama loves lazing about, while Bebe is a typical playful and energetic kitten. “Bebe is very lucky to be alive, as when she arrived into care, she came to us with her Mama and littermates, she had a paralysis tick and spent time at the Emergency Vet Clinic,” Amanda from KITTY Rescue project said. McLaughlin. The Central Ward candidates are, in order of ticket, Desmond Maslen, Melissa Pond, and Peter McKenna. The East Ward candidates are, in order of ticket, David Simm, Roz Armstrong, and Jim Morrison. The team has expressed a desire to focus on the needs of the community. The Labor party candidates feel that the people of Port Stephens are in need of a Council that will bring about positive change, based on fairness, prosperity, openness and transparency. Mayoral candidate Desmond Maslen told News Of The Area, “The feedback for our plans so far has been great.” It shows people can truly see how passionate we are, and that our intention to follow due process and make things equal for everyone has touched home.” “It is my passion for equality, a fair go for all and an open transparent governance which is guiding me,” he said. “I am looking forward to the day when everyone in this area can know with certainty

Amanda from KITTY Rescue Project said, “We will gratefully accept any donations that will help us to continue to do what we do.” If anyone would like to donate supplies to help the KITTY Rescue Project, they are desperately in need of kitty beds, blankets, litter trays, good quality wet and dry kitten food, litter and toys. Amanda said, “Basically we could use anything kitty-related, and would be so appreciative of any assistance.” The rescue facility is also in need of more carers, and would love to hear from anyone who is interested, or who may have some questions about how it all works. Candidate for East Ward Councillor, David Simm, told News Of The Area, “Residents from the local area have expressed concerns to me, particularly about the way Council has approved new developments in the area without listening to local concerns.” “Developer voices are not more important than local voices.” “Locals wish to keep the unique character of Port Stephens and I will make sure the local voice is heard,” he said. Candidate for West Ward Councillor, Giacomo Arnott, told News Of The Area, “I’m really excited to be part of the team at the upcoming election.” “We will be pursuing an agenda of transparency and accountability.” “Key ways of doing this include the reintroduction of the webcam system for Council meetings, and much better community involvement in decisions at all levels,” he said. kitty keychains for $12 and kitty magnets, with 100% of profits going to the charity. Cheers to Georgia By Rachael VAUGHAN

IRRAWANG has their own champion cheerleader, and she is quite literally setting plans to take the world by storm. Year 8 Irrawang High

student Georgia Almond has experienced very busy and very successful times of late in her chosen sport of cheerleading. Georgia has recently returned in May from a tour in Waikiki, Hawaii, competing

in the Global Cheer & Dance Games. Georgia’s group of 14 competed against the best cheerleading squads from Japan, China, USA, Korea, NZ and Mexico. They competed in two Dance sections and two Cheer Sections, coming away with a first and second place in Dance, and two third places

Property

A FANTASTIC opportunity for those who want to live the rural dream and enjoy the benefits of living off grid. Self-sufficient living on 100 acres of pastureimproved land. With dams and semipermanent creeks, this property has plenty of water and room to accommodate your livestock needs. The property is fully fenced with post and wire fencing on paddocks and boundaries. Currently the property runs sheep, cattle, ducks and

hens. A very comfortable modern rendered four bedroom Coral home with quality fixtures and fittings throughout faces due north to capture the sunlight in summer and fill the house with warmth in the cool winter months. All bedrooms are of generous size each having built in robes and the master with WIR and ensuite. The main bathroom includes a vanity, shower and bath with a separate W/C and powder room. For all your entertainment needs, on the northern side of the home there is large

special Bids. They earned a Pinnacle Bid, which is an invitation to compete in Melbourne in November, a Hawaii Bid, enabling them to compete again in Hawaii next February and a Dual in the Desert Bid, allowing them to compete in Palm Springs California next February. Georgia’s parents, Mark and Julie Almond, told News

Of The Area, “We are very proud of what Georgia has achieved and we are very appreciative of the support of the staff and her team mates at MCPD.” “It’s not just Cheer and Dance, it’s also the life skills she has learnt and the friendships she has developed that are just as important to us.”

Bowling Club thanks Roy

in Cheer. The hard work and competition didn’t slow down upon their return from Hawaii. Georgia’s squad has since competed in Sydney, being awarded five first places, four first places, three seconds and two thirds in Dance. They were also lucky enough to be awarded some

verandah with a built-in BBQ/kitchenette as well as another verandah on the southern side. There are many inclusions with this property such as a very large machinery shed, shipping container, backup generator, 165,000 and 25,000L rainwater tanks, vegetable gardens and chicken coops, worm farm septic, off grid power and solar hot water system with gas booster. For more information please call Denise Haynes at R & R Rural and Residential Property on (02) 4994 5766.

q Kevin Colman: Bequest will be put to good use.

“We were in no way expecting anything at all and were surprised at the size of the gift,” he said. “Our synthetic green is close to its use-by date so we decided to use the bulk of the money to resurface it. Most synthetic greens last about 10 to 15 years and ours was put down about 11 years old,” Mr Colman said. “The green will be named in Roy’s memory and work will start on the job sometime later this year.” As for the residue of the money, the club will use the bulk of it to upgrade the community service bus. “We are still undecided as to what to do with what’s left over,” he added.

Roy Lacey’s Legacy

By Geoff WALKER LEMON Tree Passage Bowling Club (now renamed Club Lemon Tree) has benefited to the tune of some $207,000 thanks to the generosity of the late Roy Lacey. Roy left this bequest for the

improvement of his beloved club and already around $140,000 has been earmarked for the resurfacing of the synthetic green. Club president Kevin Colman said, “Roy was a long time bowler and resident of Lemon tree Passage.”
