A witness who did not wish to be named told News Of The Area, “One of the employees was hit in the back with a bat. Another two were held up with a gun and a
machete.” It is alleged the accused “ransacked the safe and took a manager’s bag as well as everything that was in the safe”.
It has been reported that only one staff member received minor injuries during the incident. It is currently not known how much money was taken.

Mayor of Port Stephens Bruce MacKenzie said the Annual Awards are a great opportunity to come together and thank those who do so much for our area. “Australia Day is a time for us to celebrate what’s great about our
community and the people who positively contribute to our region every day,” he said. “This year’s nominees have worked in a range of areas, helping many local residents and it’s fantastic to be able to take time to acknowledge their commitment and passion to Port Stephens. “Our judging panel was tasked with the difficult job of selecting winners from this worthy group of nominees, the calibre of which is testimony to the wonderful people who call Port Stephens home.”
Giving up the panoramic water views for western town and for the roots which history are planted By Geoff WALKER
WHY would anybody sell up a home in Tilligerry and head for the western town of Narrandera? In Tony Taylor’s case it was a matter of returning to his roots which were very much planted west of the Great Divide. “Kathy and I like moving around and we came to Mallabula some three years ago to be close to the John Hunter Hospital due to a heart condition I had,” he said. “People ask me why
we are moving from a beautiful two-storey home with panoramic water views to a western town. Usually it’s the other way ‘round.” “For us, Narrandera will be closer to our extended family and, as caravaners, we will nearer both Victoria and South Australia which we hope to explore.” “We have very much enjoyed our time in Tilligerry and made enduring friendships. For me, the Men’s Shed will hold very happy memories of a great bunch of blokes.”

CWA Craft and Friendship By Rachael VAUGHAN
q Aussie, Aussie, Aussie: The Dodd family getting it all together on 26 January. By Geoff WALKER WHILE most locals celebrated our National Day in Henderson Park Lemon Tree Passage, the extended Dodd family and a few others sought out Caswell Reserve, Mallabula, as the preferred option. They were smart in as much as they set up their
tent in a prime waterfront site where they could keep a close eye on the kids in the shallows. There were no crowds and no parking problems. With eskies, ice and a portable barbecue, they were having the time of their lives. An Aussie flag and balloons flew freely in the breeze.
Mangoes Gone Mad THIS mango season is one of the best that Tilligerry has seen for years. Surprisingly bees are not a major pollinator but a native fly is in the frame as the one that gets the job done. Some residents get hundreds of mangoes one year and very few or none

the next. Perhaps wind, temperature and rainfall are contributing factors. Reg and Peg Petit from Tanilba had some 1200 individual fruit on their old ‘turpentine’ mango tree one year. They were disturbed late at night by the sound of fruit dropping into buckets as locals helped themselves. Possums are a pest as the fruit ripens and one family
from Tanilba Point picked all the overhanging mangoes early as fruit bats flew in from Snapper Island . “It was like living inside a kettle drum,” said the owner. “We couldn’t sleep as the sound of them falling on the flat tin roof kept us awake.” Another enterprising resident, tired of thieves raiding his front yard tree, draped a sign from its branches which read “SPRAYED WITH POISON DO

NOT EAT.” A local doctor then rang him asking what the poison was as a patient had come in with severe stomach cramps. He admitted to eating the stolen fruit. We will never really know if he sprayed the tree at all but the thefts ended. With mangoes currently at around $3 each, a single tree’s harvest could be very well be worth over $1,000. Country Women’s Association of New South Wales, and to the community of Dubbo. Mrs Shanks is off to London in February, with a stopover in India with thirty-two baby nighties that Medowie CWA member June Fuller has made. Medowie CWA publicity officer Kay Coghlan told News Of The Area, “Our Meeting Day is the second Wednesday of the month at 10am, and Craft and Friendship Day is the fourth Wednesday of the month.” “We are a friendly bunch and would love to see some new faces in the CWA.” Meetings are held in the Medowie Sports Ground Hall.
Another family took up station in the shelter shed. But what did Australia Day mean to them? “A family day” seemed the most common response whereas “It’s just another day,” was also noted. Patriotism shone through with others expressing pride in our flag and our long record of achievements as a nation.

Oh Honey, Honey By Rachael VAUGHAN
SONUDOR Honey has been in business for the last five years, but have remained relatively low key about its high quality product and its wonderful benefits. The Hughes family, owners of Sonudor Honey, noticed that there weren’t a lot of bees around to help pollinate their family pastures, so they invested in two hives on their property. They now boast over twenty hives, and David
Hughes has become a registered apiarist, or bee keeper. There is a lot of work involved in checking and maintaining the hives. It is important to check hives regularly for any small hive beetles and diseases, as these can completely destroy the hive plus other hives in the area. The current incredibly hot and humid weather in the region is not ideal for bees. For those interested in keeping hives, you also have
to be registered with the DPI (Department of Primary Industries) and be a member of your local beekeeping association. However, all this hard work aside, the benefits of honey and having bees in our natural environment are immeasurable. Apart from being a natural sweetener and energy source, other benefits include soothing a sore throat, helping to heal wounds on both people and animals, assisting with
medowie@newsofthearea.com.au digestive issues, antibacterial and antifungal properties and it is a major source of antioxidants. Sonudor Honey is wild bush honey and 100 percent raw, straight from the hive. There is nothing to add and it is not heated. Teneale Bassett, daughter of the Hughes Family, told News Of The Area, “The feedback we get from our customers is it’s the best tasting honey they have had and they can’t get over the amazing smell.” “We have a number of customers who send it to their extended families in other states of Australia as
well as internationally to both Japan and Ireland.” “We have also done a number of fundraisers with local preschools and schools to sell honey and make a profit to keep,” she said. “Our bees make 100 percent of our honey, and feed on over 100 acres of native bushland which includes tea tree, wattle, bottlebrush and eucalyptus to name a few in the bushlands of Booral. The honey, along with fresh raw honeycomb, is available to purchase in Medowie via the Facebook page ‘Sonudor Wild Bush Honey’.

WORKING parents face an extra hurdle in Port Stephens when trying to make their working schedules fit in with school aged children requiring before and after school care. Across the whole of the Port Stephens area, over 6,000 children compete for just 396 OOSH (out of school hours) places. In Medowie specifically, around 1,700 students compete for 144 approved before and after school care
places. This is approximately one OOSH place for every 12 students requiring care. As the new school year begins, parents who have been unable to obtain care for their children are faced with the struggle of juggling work commitments whilst ensuring their children are safe before and after school. With OOSH places in such high demand, and the fallout numbers of students who have missed out being so extreme, parents are being forced to reduce work hours, losing much needed
income for their families. Alternatively, parents are also seeking out alternative informal arrangements that are often unregulated and inherently risky. In 2015, Mike Baird and NSW Government promised 45,000 new before and after school places by 2019, but the NSW Auditor General recently found a mere
5,993 new places have been created. News Of The Area met with Shadow Minister for Early Education Kate Washington who said, “The grants offered by the Government to create additional OOSH places has been a complete failure, and the Baird Government have failed to deliver on their commitment.” “Parents are being unfairly affected in all this, they are dealing with extra
stresses over the safety and care of their children.” Emma Gordon, Mother of a 2017 Wirreanda Kindergarten student, told News Of The Area, “There are just not adequate spaces available in Port Stephens for families.” “I have managed to rally around friends to help me with care for my son on the days I missed out on a place, but I worry for the families who don’t that support network.”

Dear Jasminda,
My little girl started school this week and I’m at a loose end. It’s the first time my house has been kiddie-free since she was born. Help! Mrs VT, Pindimar Dear VT, I can remember the exact moment when I realised I needed to stop being a stay-at-home mum and go back to work. It was when the storyline of Bear in the Big Blue House became important to me. I was gaining one plot, but losing another. Those first weeks, armed with a briefcase and a breast pump, were hard. Being separated from your offspring is no walk in the park, whether it is because you are returning to work or study and they have to be put into childcare, or they are starting school and the nest is suddenly empty. A lot of this comes down to that unfortunate condition known as ‘mother guilt’. We are guilty when we go to work and we are guilty when we don’t. We are particularly guilty if, like you, we feel as though we have some free time on our hands. Don’t you worry, VT. In no time at all you’ll be whipping up 24 choc-chip cookies, teaching voluntary ethics classes and driving to three different inter-school activities in one day, because schools love parental involvement and if you’ve got a void, trust me, they’ll fill it. Having your little cherub at school can initially involve a period of grief. But then, one day, you’ll say, “I’ll miss you, sweetheart”, and you’ll try not to let her see that little skip in your step as you hotfoot it home. And then you’ll put on a load of washing, clean the house in one hour instead of the usual five, and dance around in your husband’s Y-fronts, singing into a candelabra like you’re Tom Cruise in Risky Business. And that, VT, is when you know you’ve reached the ‘acceptance’ stage of the grieving process. Carpe diem, Jasminda.
New Wheels for Overflow By Rachael VAUGHAN
OVERFLOW Church (formerly Medowie Community Baptist Church) has recently launched its Overflow Community Van. Launched at the final Medowie Markets in December last year, the van is a result of a team of dedicated hard working people, plus contributions from members of Overflow Church. Pastor Brad Fewster told News Of The Area, “We’ve had so much support from the church, it’s fantastic.” “People in our church, like Arthur and Dianne Parlett, have worked away to deliver a van that will bless the community for years to come.” “We’ve also had great support from a number of local business people who aren’t looking for any recognition but simply want to see our community prosper.”
The van will be regularly seen at the Medowie Markets which has been co-ordinated by Overflow Church for many years. It is fully equipped with cooking facilities, ready to make those delicious market sausage sandwiches and bacon and egg rolls our community has come to know and love. Markets Coordinator, Pastor David Deal, said: “The van is part of the way the church wants to ‘overflow’ into the community and simply provide the things our community is wanting.” “We envisage the van being used in a host of ways to support various community projects and events,” he said. The first Medowie Markets for 2017 will be held on Saturday 11 February outside the Bull & Bush Hotel in Medowie. For further information please call Overflow Church on 49829123.

What could be more enticing to go to school than delicious and healthy pack foods!
AS the new school year gets under way, Hunter parents are seeking opportunities to save on the cost of school lunches while still packing delicious fare kids love to eat. More than 1600 Hunter parents have taken part in the Cancer Council NSW Eat It To Beat It program’s Healthy Lunch Box sessions as part of kindergarten orientation. The free sessions provide ideas and tips on quick and easy ways to pack a healthy lunch box boosting fruit and vegetable content for cancer prevention and saving money on the weekly grocery shop. Hunter Nutrition Project Officer Clare Murphy said favouring fresh foods over packaged goods and boosting fruit and vegetable content were easy ways to make lunch boxes budget-friendly. “Processed snacks are
much more expensive per kilogram than fruit and vegetables, so when it comes to packing school lunches, fresh is best,” she said. A healthy lunch box includes a combination of breads and cereals, vegetables and salad, fruit, meat and alternatives, dairy and water. Packing something from each food group gives the

and your hip pocket,” Miss Murphy said. Eating more fruit and vegetables was important for good health and cancer prevention. “A fibre-rich diet including two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables a day can help prevent one in six bowel cancer cases,” Miss Murphy said. “Eating the recommended servings of fruit and vegetables also reduces your risk of oesophageal, lung and some mouth and throat cancers.” For free workshop information and bookings, recipes and tips go to eatittobeatit.com.au.

Corroboree under the Stars By Rachael VAUGHAN
EVERY year the Hunter and Coastal region holds a five day Scout camp. This year it was located at Lostock Scout Camp on the Paterson River, in the farm lands near the Barrington Tops. The Corroboree, as it is known, began on the 18 January with a fun-filled camp set up. The camp is based on the patrol system, with Troops camping Jamboree style. Each troop is formed by combining local scout troops on a District basis just as scouts do for a Jamboree with those troops responsible for setting up a kitchen for themselves, a mess tent and sleeping tents for everyone. It looked like a tent city, and the troops were extremely proud of their hard work and impressive results. The morning after the camp set-up, activities commenced in full swing bright and early. Over the course of the camp, Scouts participated in water safety lessons,
canoeing, archery, camel riding, horizontal bungee, scouting activities on survival, free time swimming in the river and using a giant water slide. One night, the Scouts were treated to a movie on the big screen under the stars. Another night, all scouts and their leaders slept out in a dairy paddock among the cow paddies under their self-made hutchies consisting of a tarp and pole, demonstrating great skill and technique in doing so. During the closing
parade, one Scout was presented with an Australian Scout Medallion. The award is the highest level badge work achievable for the Scout section, and therefore a very special moment as not many Scouts achieve this level Medallion. The closing parade was a colourful night, with a display of fireworks and a disco that the local cows enjoyed. This year’s Corroboree was the first for the new District Scout Leader for Port Stephens, Dennis Conroy.

Dennis told News Of The Area, “This camp was a great way for the youth to get out and learn new life skills and enjoy the activities along with meeting new youth from other districts who will become lifelong friends. “It was certainly way better than sitting at home in front of a television, playing video games.” “Life is about getting out of your comfort zone and learning new things, and the youth that attended this camp did just that,” he said. Rugby Rego Family Fun Day By Rachael VAUGHAN
MEDOWIE Rugby Club is becoming well known for their fun family activity days, and on Saturday 4 February they are hosting another one. Registration time has come around for the 2017 season, so the club is making a day of it and providing a range of activities for all the family. There will be a jumping castle and face painting for the kids, and a barbecue of sausages and bacon and egg rolls available for all the family.
Medowie Rugby Club representative Lisa Cook told News Of The Area, “We are a family orientated club, and we’re looking forward to meeting lots of new members this year.” “Come on down to registration day, introduce yourself, sign up and join the Medowie Rugby Club family.” The club is fielding teams across Juniors, Colts (U19), Seniors and Old Boys. All returning juniors players will receive playing socks, shorts and singlets thanks to one major sponsor WALK Electrical. New players will receive

playing socks and shorts, club polo shirt, club training singlet, club tracksuit, club bag and ball with club logo, and a kicking tee. If you’ve ever thought about playing, or becoming involved in your local club, now is your chance. Medowie Rugby needs local support as they strive hard to give yet another season to our young sportsmen and women, proudly offering the same opportunities as the big city clubs in Newcastle. Mummy and Me Time
Talented teens of Medowie in Rugby Union
By Rachael VAUGHAN
INTRODUCING a young child to dance can be a special and memorable experience, and what better memory than to share that experience together. Medowie studio Dance ‘n Dazzle offer a special ‘Mummy and Me’ class for eighteen-month to threeyear-old children who would like to participate in a dance class with the assistance and support of a parent. These classes are held Monday afternoons at Wirreanda School Hall at 4pm. Classes such as these help to develop coordination and gross motor skills as well as fostering the love and enjoyment of dance in a safe and familiar environment. The class focuses on basic ballet movements, nursery rhymes and drama, singing and jazz/hip hop whilst using lots of props and stories to hold their interest. The little dancers may participate with any adult loved one, making this a wonderful chance to form

premierships for Medowie rugby in 2012 and 2013. Jacob moved into the area soon after that, and all three boys joined the Hamilton Hawks Under 15s team due to insufficient numbers locally. The Hamilton Hawks team were minor premiers in 2015 and major premiers in 2016. Tom’s father and Medowie Juniors Coach, Michael Mildren, told News Of The Area, “We are still a big part of the Medowie Rugby Club family, and we would love to be able to see all grades and ages represented again with full numbers, but because the kids are all having to leave town to go to High School, they all want to play with their mates, who play in town.” “The numbers lag, and players like these boys are forced to play in town.” “This is likely to continue until Medowie gets their own public high school to keep our talent here and we can stop sending our talented kids out to fill the city teams,” he said. The boys were all selected this year to play for the Under 17s Wildfires, an impressive selection. Jacob was also selected for the Combined High Schools team, and NSW Country. The boys have gained some local attention recently on Facebook, then spotted going door to door selling chocolates and raffle tickets, with all residents reporting that the boys were extremely polite and a credit to themselves, their club, and their family. The boys are also looking for sponsorship from local businesses wanting to get behind them and their representative efforts. For more information, call Michael Mildren on 0423244983.
