Quilting Sew Successful for Family By Heather SHARP SEWING success is starting to run in the Lewis family with the youngest member, five year-old Caesar, recently receiving four prizes at the Maitland Show, the first show he has entered. His handiwork produced a soft toy snake, a mini quilt, a bag, and a painting. With a focus on his sewing, Master Lewis received first prize for his toy in the under 10 category. He explained the creation of this toy, “I had a piece of fabric and I got all kinds of fabric and sewed it together.” “I definitely concentrated on making the snake.” Not to be left out, eightyear-old Scarlett Lewis is backing up her winning streak from the NSW Quilt show last year to once again impress the judges with her masterpiece Sydney Harbour

The decision was made in order to help some retailers who previously could not afford to open on a Sunday and will potentially enable wider opening hours and more staff to be employed. It is estimated some people will lose up to $6000 a year income due to the cuts. “Weekend penalty rates make going to uni and not having full weekday availability easier as you can make up the extra time and money on the weekend,” Briana said. “I think a lot of workers won’t bother going out of their way to work the Sunday and public holiday shifts as it won’t have the same effect on their bank account.”

Coffee with a Cop By Rachael VAUGHAN IN an effort to develop and strengthen the relationship between local police and community members, Port Stephens Local Area Command officers this week hosted ‘Coffee with a Cop’. Held at Raymond Terrace MarketPlace, officers from Port Stephens, covering all ranks and duties, were on hand to talk to members of the public, about issues important to them. Cafes within the MarketPlace, Wendy’s, Donut King and Fibonacci Coffee, participated in the event, with officers giving out cards for free coffee at these stores to anyone who stopped for a chat. Community member Alan Price told News Of The Area, “It was great to meet some faces from the local stations today.” “We understand they have a very tough job, and chatting to people from around the area can help them to have a better knowledge of what is happening around the place.” “I chatted to a highway patrol officer officer today

about some road safety issues near my home and it feels good to have local officers who will listen,” he said. Officers reported the event to be a success, and were pleased with the turnout. A Port Stephens LAC Officer told News Of The Area, “It has been a really positive day for us, meeting people, having conversations with the community and taking down concerns where needed.” “We are pleased with the number of people who came, and hope it has helped residents to see that we are here, and we are listening.” “We certainly hope to hold more of these events in the future, and also encourage the community to still keep in touch with us as they need at any time,” he said. The community is reminded of these important channels for reporting to the police. Emergency if necessary on 000, Raymond Terrace Police Station on 49837599, the Police Assistance Line on 131444, or Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.

Ross River Fever hits Mum By Rachael VAUGHAN

q Medowie Mother, Shirley Been, at her home.

IN recent weeks, there have been new confirmed cases of Ross River Fever, a mosquitoborne infectious disease. Medowie mother Shirley Benn is the most recent confirmed case. Shirley told News Of The Area, “My symptoms started last week with very sore feet, which quickly spread until I was aching and sore all over.” “I initially attended the chemist to obtain pain relief, thinking I just had a bad flu or virus coming on, but soon had to book an appointment with my GP as my symptoms rapidly increased.”

“I was in so much pain and noticed some rashes on my face, then on my legs, stomach, shoulders and arms,” she said. One of the first questions asked by Shirley’s doctor was “had she been bitten by anything?” Shirley recalled being bitten by a mosquito last week, a few days prior to her symptoms beginning. Shirley’s doctor diagnosed Ross River Fever after some blood work, and she is now on penicillin to try and kill the virus as fast as possible. Shirley told News Of The Area, “I am on painkillers but

they aren’t providing much relief.” “Today the pain is worse than yesterday, yesterday I couldn’t use my left leg at all, this evening my right leg is gradually getting worse and it’s now in my elbows as well and my shoulder is starting to feel the pain.” Dr Paul Burford, from Central Health Alliance, told News Of The Area, “To protect against mosquitoes and reduce the risk of diseases they transmit, you should cover-up with a loose-fitting long sleeved shirt and long pants when outside.” “You need to apply mosquito repellent to exposed

skin, take special care during peak mosquito biting hours, especially around dawn and dusk, and remove potential mosquito breeding sites from around the home and screen windows and doors.” “If you are concerned you may be suffering from this condition, make an appointment to see your doctor as soon as possible,” he said. Shirley is urging the community to be vigilant, but not alarmed. “I’ve basically gone from spending time in the gym to sitting in the wheelchair as I can’t stand up to walk at all,” she said. “A few minor precautions and I could have potentially avoided this.”

Snack’N’Rap hits Mallabula

medowie@newsofthearea.com.au

By Rachael VAUGHAN

THE Snack’N’Rap event held recently at Mallabula was a wonderful success, bringing together industry professionals, young people, councillors and volunteers to make the event possible. The event has been running for close to 12 years in Tilligerry. It was originally an event run by Port Stephens Council, but has since been handed back to the community, and is run by the Tilligerry Youth Community Action group (TYCA). TYCA is a not-for-profit, volunteer-run organisation running youth programs in Port Stephens, with the goal of empowering young people to fulfil their potential. Spokespersons at the Snack’N’Rap event took the time to recognise the growth of the event and acknowledge the founders of Snack’N’Rap, Shane Kennedy and James Campbell. The rap side of Snack’N’Rap was brought back at the Mallabula event, with all the participants coming together in a circle to share their thoughts on what it means to them to have something like Snack’N’Rap. 1999 and under its current arrangement since 2001, Sailability Port Stephens is an ongoing initiative in the Medowie community. Located at Grahamstown Dam, the Rotary Club of Williamtown initially restored five second-hand catamarans and established storage facilities. Currently, Sailability Port Stephens has 20 sailing craft, mainly the non-capsizeable, non-sinkable Hansa dinghies and due to the enormous benefits the program provides, is struggling to meet the demand for its services. Ms Chambers explained the operations of Sailability, stating, “During the summer months three sailing programs are run each week, with 40-50 sailors, mainly with disabilities.” “Servo assist equipment is used to allow people with disabilities to experience the joy of sailing a boat.” “Several Sailability club members have followed the pathways available, allowing them to compete in State, National and Olympic racing competitions, including the Paralympics and Special Olympic World Summer Games.” For more information, or to volunteer, go to www. williamtownrotary.org or www.facebook.com/ WilliamtownRotary Club.

Scout Group in search of leaders By Rachael VAUGHAN SCOUTS New South Wales engages and inspires young Australians to develop confidence, resilience and leadership. 1st Tilligerry Scout Group program has commenced for 2017, with a varied range of activities planned that includes weekly meetings where instruction and test work is carried out with members achieving badges for all kinds of challenges, skills and interests. To achieve an active and interesting program, the Tilligerry Scout Group is recruiting leaders who are willing to commit time to the training, implementation and successful programming and functions required to be an important part in the formative development of today’s youth and tomorrow’s leaders. Ralph Francis from Tilligerry Scout Group told News Of The Area, “Leaders work hard, have fun and gain immense satisfaction in seeing their charges develop.”

Scouting provides your training through e-learning, weekend live-in training courses and in-service training. The only cost for trainee leaders is time and transport, though some costs may be covered where necessary. There are many roles for adults in Scouts. If you are over the age of 18 you may become a leader of a Joey Mob, Cub Scout Pack, Scout Troop or Venturer Unit or you may have a certain interest in adventurous activities such as abseiling or water activities and become an Activity Leader. Aside from the weekly program, members have the opportunity to participate in activities on a district, region, state and national level that range from hikes and outings, fun days, camps varying from overnight to several nights. Camps that run for several nights include the Region Corroboree, State Cuboree and the Australian Jamboree. Activities for girls and boys in the Scouting movement are organised in

sections. The Joey Mob is for boys and girls aged six to eight. The emphasis is on fun

and friendship and a gentle introduction to a world of challenges and adventures through Scouting.

The Cub Pack is for girls and boys aged eight to 11 years. There are games to play, codes and skills to learn, places to see and new friends

to meet. Cub Scouts help each other, and try to help other people too. The Scout Troop is for boys and girls aged 11 to 15 years and is one of the best kept secrets for young people. Scouts learn by doing, and are given the chance to develop responsibility, leadership, citizenship and initiative. They overcome challenges through teamwork, whilst enjoying an active and character building program that they have the primary input into formulating and see through to completion. The Venturer Unit is for young people aged 15 to 18 years and the Rover Crew is for adults aged 18 to 25 years. Activities include craft and games, hiking, camping, caving, canoeing, abseiling, rockclimbing, air activities and many more, along with learning and complying with all the prerequisites to undertake these activities. Further information on youth and leaders in Scouting can be obtained from Scouts NSW website: http://www. nsw.scouts.com.au/ or by contacting the 1st Tilligerry Scout Group 0414 474612.

Shuttleman Service By Rachael VAUGHAN

THE Shuttleman service has been operating for eight years, yet is a service many people appear to not know about. The service is a shuttle bus service, providing travel provisions for the local community and catering to a wide geographical base. The service locations include Newcastle, Port Stephens, as far west as Singleton and now north to the Myall Coast. It operates door to door and additional stops along the way can be organised and allocated for. Judy Prosser, from The

Shuttleman, told News Of The Area, “ Our main objective in maintaining our high level of service is to offer our travellers a reliable, friendly, comfortable and hassle free trip.” “We have many regular customers who recommend us, and that is a very important thing for us.” “Dennis, our driver, is very well liked and respected among our regulars, and this makes us very proud as we know this is the very best form of advertising,” she said. The safety of the whole family is taken very seriously, especially the safety of children requiring extra safety measures to travel.

BIG changes are in the wind for the Albatross Marina at Lemon Tree Passage. Currently, the slipway has been rebuilt with gutters added to collect and process run-off from the working areas. This, in turn, will be filtered, treated and pumped into the sewerage system in line with EPA guidelines. On top of this, the amenities block will be given a makeover and disability facilities added. A new block of four shop fronts facing Cook Parade will complete the development, one of which will trade under the name of Blue Marlin Marine. This business will effect repairs and sell both spare parts and marine motors. A laundromat, retail outlet and cafe will complete the project providing the community and visitors alike with facilities to be proud of.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from our three News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. This week’s problem comes from Salamander Bay. Send your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb.

Dear Jasminda,

Last week I returned to my car and there was a shopping trolley wedged against my door. Now my car has a dent in it. What is wrong with people? Mrs HP, Salamander Bay You know, HP, this is one of my bugbears. It is to do with sheep or, more specifically, people behaving like sheep. There are clearly marked trolley bays at Salamander Shopping Centre, and very helpful trolley collectors who will happily take your trolley before you’ve even finished emptying it. Why, then, do shoppers insist on leaving them in between cars, or else parked amongst the very minimal vegetation? Do they think their trolley will sprout baby trolleys if left in the dirt? Then there are people who try to shove their Woolies trolley into the Aldi bay or their Coles trolley into the library book shute. Sheer insanity, HP. How about the patrons who balance their trolley against a pole, knowing full well that it’ll slide down the path and into a Mitsubishi with just the hint of a breeze. You need to park your car as far away from other cars as possible. This drives my family members out of their minds. They have been known to exit my moving vehicle because it takes me so long to select an appropriate car space. “Can’t you see that?” they yell. I pay them no heed, HP, and I can assure you my chassis is dent free. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Gene Bovill, a Wiradjuri man, and Jarad Ashpole left Medowie for their trip last week with only the bare necessities. They began at Stroud on Friday morning at 7am, and finished with their arrival in Karuah on Sunday at 1pm,

travelling a total of 41.5 kilometres on their trip. Their entire journey was geographically situated on the land whose traditional owners are the Worimi people. The men packed their kayaks with only hammocks for sleeping,, hunting gear and fifteen litres of water each. They survived the storm that hit the coast that Friday night, and made it back safely, all in one piece. Their dinner consisted of anything they could hunt

to pass stories and learning on to their children. The Bovill and Ashpole families both love getting back to nature, camping, fishing, kayaking and enjoying the un-plugged lifestyle on trips away. Jarad Ashpole told News Of The Area, “This trip was the best camping trip I’ve ever been on.”

thrive on immersing them in their Aboriginal Culture. The fathers, along with their respective partners Jacki and Michelle, take every chance possible to learn about their cultural history and develop and strengthen their knowledge base in order

“It was something very different, that’s for sure, and I can’t wait for the next one.” “We’re looking forward to bringing our families along one day, and teaching our children even more about the land,” he said.

Dumpers Targeted By Geoff WALKER

POLICE are currently targeting illegal dumpers, particularly those who leave old cars in the national park around Oyster Cove. Senior Constable Luke Rogers from Lemon Tree Passage police said that removing number plates from vehicles did not stop the owner being traced. “If you dump an old car

during their trip. Jarad and Gene caught mud crabs, river mussels and a variety of lizards. Gene is a Behaviour Support Clinician, and Jarad and his family own Medowie’s Project Health and Fitness, and brand new business Ashy’s threads. Jarad and Gene each have four young children, and they

body you will be caught and the penalty is over $2000,” he said . “Those responsible for littering the bushland are committing an offence and the penalty is $300. Anybody knowing those responsible for dumping rubbish in the lake at the Koala Bay estate or in any other public place should

contact us immediately,” he said. On a positive note, police will be convening a public meeting to address community concerns. “We need to get feedback from the residents so that we can work together to make Tilligerry a better place to live in,” he said. News Of The Area will notify residents regarding updates about the public meeting.

The A Grade cup saw the Grasshoppers as victors in a tightly contested game,. Medowie Motors took out the B Grade Plate final, with C Grade coming out on top to win the C Grade final. Mixed Grade winners were the Marauder Mob, who were pleased with their finals success. The award for the most valuable player of the series went to Trai Brekelmans. On a very special note,

an inaugural award was presented during the awards ceremony. Named the ‘Corey Petherbridge Encouragement Award’, this plaque was presented in memory of Corey, a much loved and respected young man who lost his life in a local accident during 2016. The winner of this special award was Logan Farley. Sponsored by local real estate agents Century 21, all winners received a trophy, and a gift from the girls at Medowie Century 21 to celebrate the end of the season. All teams celebrated a successful season after the awards ceremony with a sausage sizzle. Matt Jeffery from Port Hunter Touch told News Of The Area, “Thank you to the

FIELDING 26 teams for the 2017 season, Tilligerry Football Club hopes to eclipse its five premiership wins of the previous season. Club President Kris Sparks said that the club lineup covered ages from under six to an all age team. “Women are well and

truly into soccer and we now have five all girls sides as against two in 2016,” he said. “On top of that, females can play in any of the traditionally boys’ teams. Selection is purely on merit, not gender.” “We play on a Friday night, Saturdays and Sundays, the Sundays being given over to the girls,” he said. Meanwhile club registrar John Eijkenboom said that he expected an additional 20

players to register. “Our books are certainly not closed and all are welcome,” he said. “We are all about family involvement and can’t get enough parents and carers to pitch in with setting up, packing up and serving in the canteen.” “Getting involved creates a great sense of community and develops long lasting friendships. It also fosters much needed social contact.” Interested? All details can be found from John on 0402 495 626.
