Doggie Day Out By Rachael VAUGHAN
DOGS of Medowie, you haven’t been forgotten, there’s a Christmas celebration just for you! A regular group of passionate dog owners who use the Medowie dog park have banded together to put on a Christmas party for man’s best friend. The venue will be the Port Stephens Council Medowie dog park on Coachwood Drive on 3 December from 10am until 2pm. One of the organisers, Peter Evans told News Of The Area, “We want everyone to feel comfortable to come down with their dogs and meet some other locals.” “We’ve got lots of fun things organised, and want to kick off the Christmas season right by celebrating with our furry friends.” “We’re grateful for this park, and to be able to get together on occasions like this and celebrate with all the

responsible dog owners of Medowie and surrounds,” he said. The Group have organised a number of activities, including prizes for best dressed, biggest dog, smallest dog, fluffiest dog and more. Entry is by gold coin donation, and all funds raised on the day will go towards a collection of dog toys to be left at the park for users to enjoy day to day with their dogs. A sausage sizzle will be cooked for all the human attendees, and there’ll be dog friend beef patties for the pooches. Generous local businesses have donated towards helping the dogs have their day. Peter said, “A huge thanks needs to go to our sponsors for helping us get this event happening.” For more information, or to donate, please contact Peter Evans on 0413813241.

Tilly Festival
By Rachael VAUGHAN
THE skies over the peninsula might have been grey and ominous, but the spirit and atmosphere at the 2017 Tilligerry Festival was shining bright. The weather threatened right up until the eleventh hour to cancel or hinder the event, but organisers were pleased to be able to go ahead as planned, albeit with a bit of wind and the threat of rain. There was something
for everyone at the festival this year, with stalls galore, entertainment, food vans and activities. A traditional welcome to Country and a blessing of the fleet opened the family day, wit The children’s playground was packed all day, with kids enjoying time together while their parents sat listening to the various performers and relaxing. Performers include the local Ukulele group, the ‘Lemon Ukelypts’, children’s karaoke, Tanilba Bay School,

Stall holders held onto their hats and their gazebos in the windy weather, but braved the threat of rain to offer attendees a wonderful collection of items ranging from handmade creations, through to children’s toys, clothing and the always popular licorice straps. Oakvale Farm and Fauna world provided a selection of animals for everyone to meet and learn about, with the staff of hand to teach families interesting facts on our furry friends. A large grassed area of sideshows and rides provided entertainment to those looking for an adrenaline rush,
with the ‘Freak Out’ and ‘Speed C2’ providing thrills for those who found the tea cup ride just wasn’t enough. Peninsula resident Andrea Robinson spoke with News Of The Area about the event, saying, “I’m so glad the weather held out, because they’ve put on such a lovely family day.” “We’ve had such a fantastic day, and it’s really made us want to come down and utilise the foreshore park more than we have been.” “We truly do live in one of the most beautiful places, we are so lucky,” she said. A beautiful display of fireworks closed off the night, with volunteers pleased with the overall success of the day and evening. The success of the

A FEW sprinkles of rain didn’t dampen the spirits of Year 12 students from Irrawang High School as they gathered at King Edward Park for photos with their friends and families before heading off to Harbourview Function Centre in Newcastle for their formal. The formal has been months in the planning for their special evening, led by their dedicated Year Advisor Ms Sheriff and the student committee. School Captain Lincoln Hunter commented, “ it was a really enjoyable night, everything went to plan and was better than we ever imagined.” “We all had great fun” Head teacher Mrs Wallace was one of many teachers who attended and she said,
“ The students were such a credit to the school and came gorgeously attired and were beautifully behaved.” “A good night was had by all.” Ms Sheriff, the Year 12 Year Advisor, has seen the students from year seven all the way through their secondary schooling.

Great Wall
By Geoff WALKER
YOU’VE no doubt heard of The Great Wall of China, The Berlin Wall, Hadrian’s Wall and the proposed Donald Trump wall to keep the Mexicans out? Well, Tanilba Bay now has its own Great Wall in Diggers Drive, just a bit past the arched gates on the left on the way to the foreshore. Why? This Is what we asked the new owner, Tracey Budworth who has moved
here with her partner Greg from Newcastle. “It’s the ‘WOW’ factor,” she explained as she helped backfill the solid block sandstone structure with black loam. The dynamic duo sourced the huge cut blocks of stone from a quarry near Gosford. Each one would weigh in at around a tonne and large blocks were no dearer than the smaller ones so they went the whole hog. “It’s not cheap,” Ms Budworth said.
“The blocks alone were $10 000 and we’ve had a team of professionals in with their heavy machinery to put them in place.” “We plan to construct a permaculture garden focusing on edible vegetation,”she added. “The previous owner was a little upset that we dug up her garden but was happier when we gave a lot of the plants away and put a many of them in our backyard.” Ms Budworth said, “It looks a bit messy at the moment but wait ‘till it’s all done and dusted.”

Port Author’s Release Anthology By Marian SAMPSON
PORT writers have released an anthology of works inspired by the sea, sun and sand. The publication received $3000 in funding through a Port Stephens Council Cultural grant. The collaborative work has lead to a 95 page publication of poetry and short stories, entitled Sand, Sea and Sun. The works featured are all inspired by Port Stephen’s natural environment, history and
culture. Anne –Maree Dowell writes “Another Sunset – here we go, Better than a TV show, From our verandah most every night, Nature shares this glorious site.” The members of the Port Stephens Fellowship of Australian Writers are very proud of the book which is available for sale at a range of outlets including the Port Stephens Council Visitors Centre on Victoria Parade at Nelson Bay. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “I am very proud that Port Stephens Council is supporting culture in Port Stephens.”
He congratulated the
authors of the publication and those who managed the collaboration to create the book. “This is a fantastic book that the writers should be proud of,” he said. The book launch was also addressed by the Fellowship of Australian Writers Secretary Maureen Kelly, who takes time to visit all of New South Wales chapters. The group meets every Thursday at 10am at Tomaree Library and welcomes new and potential members. You can find out more on the Fellowship Of Australian Writers website.
My PH, my dear man. Have you ever read those ‘What I ate today’ columns? I think they are all telling furphies. Don’t you agree that furphy is a wonderful word? How can a word that conjures up an image of a cute little gonk with downcast eyes be related to deception and trickery? Now, in those ‘What I ate today’ columns in glossy magazines, they always interview supermodels and ballet dancers and C-grade celebrities who write books about paleo diets, and what they are basically saying via their self-righteous meal plan is that we mere mortals are blubber-guts with zero self control. It is hard not to feel slightly pathetic, when you read about someone eating organic goji berries washed down with a kale smoothie for breakfast, a handful of hand-harvested sprouts with vitamin water for lunch and a probiotic drink for dinner, because the poor waif is so fatigued that the thought of cooking a decent meal is beyond them. Everything in moderation is a cliché worth recalling in these times of trouble, Mr PH. There’s no point starving yourself until you turn into a raving lunatic at the local drive-through shouting, “Get me the family pack and make it snappy” and eating it in the shadowy depths of the car park, because you’re starving to death. PS: I don’t think you are cheating on your wife unless your subterfuge involves the woman next door (who also has no willpower).

Best Wishes Leone
By Geoff WALKER
THE Lemon Tree Patchwork ladies recently held a farewell party for long time member Leone Oldham who is moving to Perth in the near future. Leone and her husband Doug moved to Mallabula
some 30 years ago from Wangi Wangi where they ran a butcher shop. They were personal friends with fellow resident artist William Dobell (later Sir William). Both were keen golfers and Leone played an important

role with the LGU, travelling the state to officially rate golf courses for handicapping purposes. It was on one such visit to rate the infant Tanilba Bay course that they fell in love with the town and decided to relocate to Mallabula. Doug passed away several years ago and as a tribute to his memory, the family planted a Wollemi Pine on Tanilba Golf Course. Today the tree is several metres high. Now into her eighties, Leone has sold up and will live with her daughter. Several of her fellow patchworkers plan to visit her in the new year. Speaking of her years in Tilligerry, Leone said that she will miss the friendships and the happy golfing times. Ms Dobell said, “I’ll never forget a very funny incident which happened when we were playing away. I was playing in a trio and I introduced myself as Leone Oldham to one of the others. When she said that her name was Bacon, we laughed.” “The third lady then told us that she owned a piggery! It really broke us up!”

Please support the advertisers within the News Of The Area
the hotel will be hosting ‘Outerphase’ from 8:30pm. Outerphase are a Newcastle, Hunter Valley, Port Stephens and Central Coast Duo that combine the talents of Murray Byfield and Gary Boughton, playing all the great covers from the rock classics to present. Gary has worked nationally with acts such as Back2Rock, Diversity and Cybercrystal and brings to the show an amazing guitar and vocal strength. If you combine this with Murray, who delivers lead vocals and guitar, you’re in for a treat. Murray is well known for his vast vocal range, which allows him to cover most musical styles with ease. He has an uncanny ability to sound like the artist he is covering at the time, impressing audiences up and down the coast. Outerphase caters for any venue, with either a complete acoustic set list for a more laid back atmosphere or a fully sequenced show that can have you dancing all night.
Murray and Gary from Outerphase spoke with News Of The Area and said, ‘We are really looking forward to rocking out at the Seabreeze
Hotel.” “It’s such a great venue and atmosphere, so we hope to see you all there!”
q Murray and Gary from Outerphase.

q Kaoa Kii, Reece Montgomery and Elysia Montgomery are ready to launch the Medowie women back into competition.
Women will take the Field By Rachael VAUGHAN
WITH women’s sport becoming more recognised as having the equal ability of their male counterparts, a local rugby club is reestablishing its connection to women in sport.
For the first time in ten years, the Medowie Marauders Rugby Union Club will be fielding a women’s team. They will joining the Hunter Women’s Rugby Union competition, and will be up against clubs who have been
in the competition since it was founded. The Medowie girls however, are ready for the challenge and can’t wait to make their mark in the world of Women’s Rugby. One of the founding members making efforts to
get the women’s team off the ground is Elysia Montgomery. She told News of the Area, “The Club is trying to expand and diversify, so not only will this will be a great thing for the area, it will be a wonderful thing for the women of the area for fitness
and friendship.” “We already have Reece Montgomery as our head coach, and he will have James Hough as his assistant coach.” The Club is currently in negotiations with a prolific major sponsor. “We are excited for

next season and can’t wait to get the ball rolling,” Ms Montgomery said. The Club is looking for more sponsors and players. A community meeting is scheduled for 11 December at Medowie Sportz Cafe at 4pm.

25 Augusta Place Medowie SOLD For $700,000
The property was previously listed with another agency however was unsuccessful in reaching a sale. I started working with the vendors in August and while the property was receiving a fresh and colourful coat of paint, I called in my amazing photographer Jason who travels up from Sydney to shoot for me. It was then that the R & R Team and I started to pull together the property’s profile.

The property received a huge response from buyers and due to this, it did not take long before offers were being negotiated. During the course of the negotiations I was able to secure a delayed settlement for my vendors which enabled them a stress free settlement after Christmas. Selling property to me isn’t just about the sale itself, its providing that stress free experience for the vendor to move on to their new chapter and for the buyer to have a smooth transition into their new home.
