Dancing up a storm By Rachael VAUGHAN
MEDOWIE performers have danced their way into the hearts of audiences at the Hunter Schools Dance Festival. The Hunter Schools Dance Festival is a celebration of dance by Public Schools NSW from the Hunter and Central Coast that provides the opportunity for children to perform alongside peers from other schools and participate in a professional dance setting across a four-day festival. Medowie was well represented this year with Wirreanda Public School and Irrawang High School both auditioning and gaining spots to dance in the festival. Irrawang High School’s Junior, Intermediate and Senior Dance Ensemble groups were successful in being offered performance spots. They began rehearsing their contemporary dances with their teacher Mrs Meagan Rembarz

MEDOWIE & TILLIGERRY News Of The Area The Medowie Neighbourhood Watch
FROM Page 1
Neighbourhood Watch in Port Stephens when it folded over ten years ago. New committees are now being launched again across the state, and supported by NSW Police. In the past, our Medowie group hosted many informative nights for the community and provided important feedback on issues within the community to the police. The most important role of the Neighbourhood Watch was building relationships with local police and how to report intelligence correctly to properly record statistics in our area. Cr Geoff Dingle, who this week announced he is running for Mayor in the September local council elections, was a member of the original Medowie Neighbourhood Watch, and is pleased to see a relaunch received so positively. He told News Of The Area,
“Thanks also to Port Stephens LAC Crime Prevention Officer Alison Stewart for attending and taking us under her wing.” “I think already we feel better connected to our police friends and if we can help them to assist us that’s exactly what we should be trying to achieve.” If you are active on Facebook, you are encouraged to find the new ‘Medowie Neighbourhood Watch’ page, and keep up to date with news, tips and local information. For this first meeting, discussions were had on scams running at the moment that the community need to be aware of, and the most appropriate reporting methods for crime. A future meeting will feature a guest speaker on scams and what to do. All community members are invited to attend a meeting, with the next scheduled for Wednesday 30 August from 7:30pm at Medowie Community Centre. Future meetings will fall on the last Wednesday of every month.

Up in Smoke
IF you see plumes of smoke rising in Medowie this weekend, it’s nothing to be concerned about. Medowie Rural Fire Brigade together with neighbouring brigades will be conducting a scheduled hazard reduction burn on Brocklesby Road in Medowie on Saturday, August 5. It is estimated the burn will last for around five hours. Approximately 30 NSW RFS members will take part in the operation which will help reduce the risk of bushfires around Wirreanda Public School. The Brigade’s Community Engagement Officer, Ken Johnson, said it is important to take advantage of suitable weather conditions to conduct hazard reduction burning as soon as they occur. “Each year only a small window
of opportunity exists where weather conditions are favourable to controlled burns.” “For a hazard reduction burn to be successful, we require the right wind and temperature conditions as well as ground fuels to be sufficiently dry,” Mr Johnson said. “We advise residents in Brocklesby Road and surrounding areas within Medowie to take appropriate precautions, such as keeping doors and windows closed, removing washing from clotheslines and making sure pets are in a protected area,” he added. “People with asthma or those susceptible to respiratory problems are advised to stay indoors, close windows and doors and follow their health plan.” For more information, call 4015 0000 or visit rfs.nsw.gov.au.

I was discreetly breastfeeding my baby in the food court at the local shopping centre, when I was approached by a security guard. He directed me to a room designated for nursing mothers. I asked if it was against the centre’s policy to breastfeed and he said no, but if someone complained I would have to move on. I was too embarrassed to argue. Mrs HK, Salamander Bay
Tilligerry Trivia Night By Rachael VAUGHAN THE 2017 Tilligerry Festival is coming up, and Tilligerry Habitat members are putting on a trivia night to raise funds to assist with the success of this fantastic community event. The Trivia night will be hosted in the main building of the Tilligerry Habitat on Saturday 5 August, 2017. The cost to enter the competition is $10 per person, with a maximum of eight people per table. There is prize money of $100 for the winners, and a raffle to be drawn on the night. Tea and coffee will be available, and you are welcome to bring your own
nibbles and drinks for your table to share. For more information, or to book your team or place, please contact Kathy Davidson on 4982 3567 or Tilligerry Habitat on 4984 5677. The Tilligerry Festival, founded in 2012, relies solely on the support of local businesses and community members. Funds raised from the Tilligerry Habitat Trivia Night will be put to great use towards this year’s festival. State Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington was in attendance at last year’s festival, and told News Of The Area, “So many people work so hard to make this festival happen.”
“It is truly a credit to our wonderful community, and I encourage everyone to support all efforts, like the trivia night, that will ensure it will run again successfully this year.” The 2017 Tilligerry Festival will take place on 18 November 2017 at Henderson Park, Lemon Tree Passage. The festival will start at 10am. You will find carnival rides, stalls, demonstrations, games, music, dancing, community group displays, picnic in the park, great food at local businesses and stalls, and a fundraising sausage sizzle.
happening in our area, which in turn will assist police to allocate resources around Port Stephens where it will be most helpful. There are four main reporting avenues and methods of reporting crime to Port Stephens Local Area Command. You should call 000 for anything that is life threatening or an emergency. If you need to report things like break-ins, robberies, violence or if you see a crime occurring, you can report to the Police Assistance Line (PAL) on 131444. A common misconception about doing a PAL report is that they are not police officers taking the calls. PAL call centre workers are highly trained, and can still send through a report for the dispatch of a police vehicle if needed, as well as taking the report and issuing a report number on the spot that you can use to follow up on. The third option is to call Crime Stoppers to report information you may have
come across relating to a crime. This may be information about a crime being planned, drugs being sold or suspicious activities of any kind. You can reach Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Lastly, a new online reporting system has been launched and is being received well in the community for those who prefer online reporting to a phone call. The NSW Police Force Community Portal is the newest reporting system for the community. The portal is an online system that should be used for non-emergency reports such as theft, lost property and intentional damage or graffiti. The portal can also be used to view report statuses and history, increasing the transparency between the community and police. If something concerns you, please report it. Every piece of information can be a valuable piece to the bigger puzzle.
Reporting Crimes is Vital
Dear Mrs HK,
By Rachael VAUGHAN
Many revolting, socially unacceptable acts occur in a food court, but breastfeeding is not one of them. First the sights: There is more exposed skin in a food court than you can poke a soggy chip at. Muffin tops rolling out of trackie-daks, breasts leaping from too-tight tank tops, bottom cracks smiling, tuckshop arms flapping . . . you name the body part and it’s there in all its shameless glory. So how a breast (hidden by a baby’s head and a strategically placed bunny-rug) can be an issue, is beyond the bounds of logic. Then there’s the sounds: Toddlers screaming into their kebabs. Uncouth individuals coughing all over your salmon and avocado sushi roll without so much as a sorry. There’s the glug-glug of people mindlessly shoving fist-sized helpings of unrecognisable food in the general direction of their mouths, gluttons with no sense of delicacy or decorum, the din of futile chatter, zippers straining against beer guts, gravy sludge slurped by an unwatched child. How can the delicate sound of a baby having her 10am feed be heard over the ruckus? It seems to me, that the natural, unsullied undertaking of giving a baby a healthy and nutritious meal straight from mother nature is perhaps just so far removed from the fusty, fetid, scraping, screeching environment of a food court, that they simply don’t know what to do with you. Or maybe the security guy was bottle fed.
STATISTICS for reported and documented crime in the Port Stephens area fall short of what residents are saying they are experiencing. Recent community police engagement nights hosted at Medowie and Tilligerry showed that residents are frustrated with issues concerning reckless driving, car break ins and intentional damage to properties. Police representatives, however, reported that they were surprised by some of the issues raised at these meetings, because the numbers are not reflected in reports made to the police via their various reporting channels. With this is mind, News Of The Area is reminding community members how to report crime and unsavoury behaviour. Diligent reporting of crime will assist with providing an accurate snapshot of what is
Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Massive re-vamp for Pet Shop
MEDOWIE & TILLIGERRYNews Of The Area
By Charlie ELIAS
THERE’S some exciting news for local pet owners and lovers – Port Stephens Pet Warehouse has undertaken a massive revamp, breaking new ground in quality and service. The one-stop pet store, which has been owned and operated by local businessman Brian Blake for more than 10 years, offers everything a pet owner needs. The massive warehouse stocks leading brands in a range of pet accessories, food, clothing, toys, bedding, collars and leads. There is also an array of birds (many hand-raised), reptiles and fish available, and in groundbreaking news the local business can now also offer a dog wash, in addition to pet grooming and styling. Mr Blake said he was excited to have Petz Palace open its doors adjacent to the Pet Warehouse in Shearwater Drive, Taylors Beach. “We are fortunate to have experienced pet groomer Maura Bandi available five days a week,” Mr Blake said. “The grooming business will complement our newly installed, do-it-yourself dog wash facility. “In addition to the warehouse revamp, this will provide the Port’s many pet owners some of the

What has not changed, however, is the excellent customer service that has become synonymous with Pet Warehouse. Mr Blake paid tribute to staff members Kate John, Lisa Steane and Maura, who have
more than 100 combined years of experience working with pets. “The staff are very knowledgeable and caring and are happy to provide customers with the best advice on products for their

Geography students achieve top results
By Rachael VAUGHAN
THE Australian Geography Competition results were recently announced, and our very own Irrawang High School held their own against the nation’s best, achieving enviable results for nearly twenty students who entered. Irrawang High School students who entered
the Australian Geography Competition attained excellent results. Those who gained a High Distinction were in the top five percent in Australia, students who achieved a Distinction in the top 15 percent and students who gained a Credit in the top 30 percent nationwide. Lue Fagan from Irrawang High School told News Of The
Area, “We are so proud of the results from our Irrawang High School Geography students.” “They have not only held their own against the high achieving schools, they have landed well amongst and higher than the majority of them.” “We are making our mark that Irrawang High School is a school not to be taken lightly
in terms of achievement and quality education,” she said. This year, the national competition saw an increase in participation numbers compared to 2016, with more than 70,000 students from over 740 schools, including selective and private, all over Australia taking up the challenge. The competition is a contest for all secondary
Australian geography students, aimed at assessing their geographical knowledge and skills. It encourages students interest in geography, and rewards student excellence. Outstanding students at each age level win prizes include books, special certificates and medals. Ms Fagan said, “This is a fantastic achievement for
our students, and also our dedicated and committed geography teachers and the HSIE faculty at Irrawang High School.” Congratulations to all students and teachers involved with this year’s competition result. Quality teachers and students who give their all certainly do translate to quality education.

Meet the Candidates
By Rachael VAUGHAN
WITH the September local council elections coming up, the townships of Medowie and Tilligerry are invited to a community candidates forum being held in their respective local venues. Medowie Progress Association will host their candidates night first, at Medowie Community Hall on Monday 7 August, commencing at 7:30pm. Of particular significance during speeches, candidates will be asked to speak on the implementation of the Medowie Strategy, incorporating Town Centre Master Plan, Affordable Housing, Rezonings and Flood Inundation as the key themes of the forum; along with time for each candidate to address our community on their personal platforms. There will also be time for a general ‘Q&A’ forum.
Thursday, 3 August, 2017
President of the Medowie Progress Association, John Donahoo told News Of The Area, “We encourage our community to attend and ask questions of the candidates who have put themselves forward to be our future mayor and councillors.” “It is important we have a good understanding of what it is each candidate stands for, and what their vision for Port Stephens includes.” Tilligerry Community Association will host their Meet the Candidates evening on Monday 14 August at 7pm at the Tilligerry Habitat. The Tilligerry community particularly will be interested in the various issues facing their town. Some key areas that will be covered include new councillor support for the planned roundabout at the southern end of Avenue of the Allies, plans for road reconstruction and maintenance, protection of bushland and bike path
construction. Having heard from the candidates, there will be time for questions, which will give locals the chance to air their own concerns. Bay Marshall from the Tilligerry Association told News Of The Area, “Council has always been about more than `roads, rates and rubbish’.” “Research still says that local government is the part of our government that the community most interacts with and trusts, so this is your chance to shape our future.” “We urge everyone to come along to help us ensure that the next council is accountable, transparent and involved in our community,” he said. “The best councils we had over years were those with balance; individuals and party groups prepared to work together from different directions perhaps for the not so common good,” he added.

New Speeds Cause Road Rage
By Simone JOHNSON
NEW speed limit changes along Lemon Tree Passage Road have sparked anger among some residents. The new changes to the speed limits, starting from the Nelson Bay Road roundabout at Salt Ash through to Lemon Tree Passage, came into force on 18 July. Residents have gone to social media and local community Facebook pages to voice their concerns and share their experiences regarding the new changes.
Cassie Beer, who lives in Medowie and travels along the road for work, told News Of The Area, “In two weeks, I have seen a four car pileup and a severe road rage incident.” “I’ve seen many people driving dangerously and recklessly overtaking other people who are abiding by the new limits.” Another resident from Tanilba Bay, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “The new limits are punishing the people who are doing the
right thing and following the law.” “The people who were speeding and causing accidents were already doing the wrong thing in the first place.” “Instead of doing 10km/h over the speed limit, now they’re doing 20,” she said. RMS figures state there have been 43 car crashes along Lemon Tree Passage Road in the five years leading to December 2015. Multiple people have gone to the community
Facebook page to share their experiences of road rage due to the new speeds, with these ranging from being tailgated
to people flashing their highbeams at them. It is estimated the new changes should add a total of

q Erika West saved the day for her team.
LOCAL trivia team ‘Smith & Weston’ had two unexpected wins at Club Lemon Tree recently thanks to a little girl holidaying with her grandmother. Helen West from Tanilba Bay brought eleven-year-old Erika who lives at Thornton along for the night, but didn’t expect her to contribute much to the team’s performance. “I was totally wrong,” she said. “On the first night, there were a few questions about religions and Erika got them right. She had been studying this subject at school. We would not have won without her.” “On the second night, Erica really starred as the bonus questions were about Barbie dolls. She got our team five points from this but it was in the last round that she took off like a rocket,”she added. “The final 15 questions were about board games with picture clues. Erica’s eyes lit up and she left the rest of us floundering in her wake.” Erika looks forward to her holidays at Tanilba and can’t wait to get back. “I shared in the prize money and I really enjoyed the fun night out.” It’s great to do other things with my grandmother as well,” she said. Trivia night is a regular Wednesday night fixture at Club Lemon Tree. It costs a mere $2 to enter and all you have to do is turn up at 7pm. Why not give it a whirl?

Cruising for a Cause

SOME 85 members of the Southern Cross Cruisers and Trike Club rolled into town on the morning of Saturday 29 July. They chose Lemon Tree Passage as a favoured destination for their AGM because of its central location. Vice President Peter Rich (Pommy) told News Of The Area, “Our three chapters are based in Yagoona (Sydney), Taree and Tamworth, so Lemon Tree is an ideal location.” “It would not disadvantage members in terms of travelling time.” “We have booked in to Koala Shores holiday park,” he said. “We have regular outings and at the moment we are looking for a worthy charity to patronise.” “Some of our community work involves ‘bucket list’ requests from people who would like to be taken for a ride. We’ve also been associated with the ‘pink ribbon’ foundation and in toy runs for children,” Mr Rich said. This social club for cruisers and trikes can be contacted on 0438 698 007. Champagne Tastes, Bike Budget By Geoff WALKER
IS it the overcrowded lifestyle; the need to ‘get away from it all’ or the search for serenity? Whatever the reason, Nelson Bay residents are increasingly turning up in Tilligerry. Some paddle over in kayaks, have lunch on the waterfront and depart. Others turn up in a mini bus, trek around the town and disappear into the sunset. Some rock into town in cars with a ute or two full of pushbikes and give our

The dynamic group of about 15 cyclists has been pedal pushing for about two years. They take turns in plotting an outing. Riders don’t know the exact route to take until all is revealed on the day. They have ventured as far afield as the Fernleigh Tunnel, Newcastle and Lake Macquarie and ride every second Friday. The $1.3million makeover of the waterfront park at Lemon Tree has greatly increased the number of visiting day trippers, mobile home tourists and picnickers, much to the delight of the now thriving waterfront cafes and restaurants.

They looked something like a poor man’s version of the Tour de France – with a difference, carrying bottles of ‘champers’ with them as a reviver. When asked about the Highway Patrol, the dreaded breathalyser and the booze bus, they showed little concern. One member said that the riders watered the

and Stunning Views
By Marian SAMPSON FAMOUS for the amazing quality of its fresh seafood, the Rock Lobster Restaurant in Nelson Bay boasts a fantastic menu, wonderful views and contemporary atmosphere. The signature dish is definitely the impressive hot and cold seafood platter. On the menu you will also find a stunning king prawn and wonton stack, with crispy deep fried wontons layered generously with fresh king prawns, crispy lettuce and highlights of creamy avocado, drizzled with a dressing which makes for a perfect dish. The tasting plate offers diners a sampling of salt and pepper squid, fresh prawns, balmain bugs and smoked salmon served with a delicious Greek salad, and a selection of dipping sauces, perfect when teamed with a glass of champagne or wine. When it comes to fresh and local seafood, you simply can’t beat the selections on the menu at the Rock Lobster Restaurant. Local oysters grown in the
Bay are featured alongside fresh fish straight from the pristine waters of Port Stephens and its surrounds. Also on the menu are succulent steaks, tender chicken and a delicious vegetarian mushroom risotto as well as gluten-free options for diners with specific dietary requirements. An extensive wine list boasts boutique wines from the Cricket Pitch and Audrey Wilkinson ranges as well as favourites from Tyrrell’s Wines and a range of premium beers. Sit back and relax, take your time, enjoy your meal and the stunning views, watch the pelicans, or you may see dolphins frolicking as you enjoy one of the best seafood meals available anywhere in the Bay. Situated on the upper level of d’Albora Marinas at Nelson Bay, the Rock Lobster Restaurant is great for intimate dinners, casual lunches, celebrations and special occasions. Listen to the live music on the marina on the weekends and enjoy a crisp beer or wine selected to complement
the beautifully presented and delicious meals. The vibe in the Rock Lobster Restaurant is upbeat; you will enjoy the atmosphere of the freshly refurbished modern venue featuring a stunning photograph of the sunset that you can enjoy from the restaurant in the evenings. The friendly staff will be happy to assist you, nothing seems to be too much trouble. The restaurant has been under new ownership for two years and the owners, Megan and Graeme, have been making positive changes to the menu and decor since they took on the iconic business. Bay local Megan told News Of The Area, “We look forward to welcoming locals and visitors to Rock Lobster Restaurant, and hope that they enjoy our food.” “Diners have been telling us that they are really enjoying the quality of the food, the atmosphere, and the friendliness of our team.” “We give our chefs free range to be creative and this has added vibrancy to the menu and the specials board.”

Restaurant reopens at Nelson Bay
By Charlie ELIAS
TWO years after fire swept through the Nelson Bay Golf Club and restaurant, the popular Bluewater Grill will reopen its doors this week. It has been a tough couple of years for Bluewater owners Will and Tanya Semmens, but they can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel. “Working out of the makeshift clubhouse has been difficult, particularly the last 12 months … we had to sell our home,” Mr Semmens said. “But we can now move forward with confidence. We are looking forward to starting again. “We see the reopening in a brand new building as a great opportunity to build on the close relationship we have with our loyal customers and hope to attract a host of new ones. “We are extremely grateful to the local members who have stuck by us through these difficult times.” Diners will notice lots of changes with the décor and seating capacity, which has doubled from the current 60 to more than 120. The menu will feature modern Australian cuisine
and retains chef Tanya’s signature salt and pepper squid, along with family favourites such as beef cheeks and lambs fry. “There will also be a bigger emphasis on the café section with coffees and freshly homemade cakes,” Mr Semmens said. “In fact all our meals are made to order, using only fresh local produce.” The Bluewater will also cater for weddings, parties and conferences, along with golf groups, fundraisers and the like. Families will be made most welcome with the inclusion of a children’s play area strategically placed adjacent to the restaurant. Mr Semmens said that the restaurant employed up to 20 staff including chefs, waiters and kitchen hands, and that customer service remained a priority. The Bluewater Grill is open every day from 10am to 9pm and bookings are essential. The restaurant is situated in the newly built Nelson Bay Golf Club, in Dowling Street. To book telephone 4981 4256 or go to bluewatergrill.net.au.

Stu Makes 100
By Geoff WALKER
‘FRUSTRATION’ seems to be the buzzword at the Mallabula Panthers recently as narrow losses have kept them lower on the league ladder than their performances would warrant. They still believe, however, that they will make the semi finals. On a more positive note, Stuart King ran on for his 100th game at the Vince Woodman Oval Mallabula week. After playing in two premiership winning sides and being captain for two years, he remains a key player for the side. Club President Bryan Thompson invites all supporters to an ‘Old Boys and Sponsors’ game on 12 August. “This game is played against arch rival Shortland and is a great chance for the current players and locals to catch up with legends of

“This can be a once in a lifetime opportunity for some kids to run out onto the SCG and play a game of footy and I know every kid that gets this opportunity is overflowing with joy and super excited.”

“My little man woke up on Saturday morning with the statement, ‘I’m playing with Buddy Franklin today, hey Mum’.” “I want to thank the NAB AFL Auskick for this amazing opportunity for our little footballers, it truly is something they never forget.” A member of the Port Stephens Power, fiveyear-old Dane McKimm was excited to play, telling News Of The Area, “I get to play in the SCG.” “I get to be with my team.” “I am a little bit nervous and happy.” “I like kicking the ball and my friends and I can mark.” Auskick is an AFL junior program run for girls and boys from five years old.
