Medowie Firies Help Out Northern NSW By Heather SHARP

THE Medowie Rural Fire Brigade is well known in the local area for selflessly volunteering their time in times of bushfires emergency. This time, two of their own, Deputy Captain Mr Harrison Wright and Mr Garry Higgs, have outdone themselves and served their Brigade well by volunteering to travel to Lismore to assist with the flood emergency that has taken over the Lismore region in the past week. News Of The Area was

able to catch up briefly with Mr Wright before he left. When asked why he and Mr Higgs is helping out people so far away, the communityminded Mr Wright replied, “We go to help wherever we are needed really.” “The local crews up north would be exhausted from the work they’ve been, and time and time again out-of-area crews have been on hand to help our community in times of struggle.” Mr Wright and Mr Higgs both have skill sets that are desperately needed by the

storm ravaged towns they will be helping. Mr Wright explained, “Given the nature of the disaster, we will be utilising our skills and expertise in Safe Working on Roofs as well as Chainsaw Operations.” Although on leaving from the Station at 8am on Sunday morning the two men did not know where they were going, only knowing they were on assignment and would be told once they started traveling where they were needed, Mr Wright told News Of The Area, “We hope to be clearing

Rescue Pets Lenny and Loui By Rachael VAUGHAN

RESCUE organisations are filled with animals needing a loving home and News Of The Area is excited by a new venture to connect rescue pets with our readers. News Of The Area has collaborated with Port Stephens’ newest rescue group, the ‘KITTY Rescue Project’ and its founder, Amanda Warren. “This project began when we realised the numerous ‘free kitten litters’ advertised, especially on the ‘Buy, Swap & Sell’ pages,” Amanda said. One single pair of cats and their offspring can produce as many as 420,000 kittens in just seven years. “We set ourselves up to bring those numbers of unwanted litters down, and are willing to offer a special rate service to desex all these cats who do not need to endure another unwanted pregnancy.” “That is how we stop the cycle.” “We can actually make a

positive difference by making it our mission to volunteer our time for as long as it takes to make sure there are no more unwanted litters in need,” she said. The KITTY Rescue Project rescues whole litters, cares for them within their volunteer foster homes, and ensures that all the necessary veterinary work is completed

before adopting them to loving families. Each week, News Of The Area will showcase a new rescue pet looking for a home, currently fostered through either the KITTY Rescue Project or a local dog rescue group. This week we have Lenny (Ginger) and Loui, who are domestic long hairs.

q Lenny, the domestic long hair, is looking for a loving home.

LAST year marked the 50th anniversary of decimal currency, and one avid collector has honoured that anniversary with a very special 50 cent coin display, created for his son, which has finally reached completion. Lex Van Huisstede started collecting 50 cent coins some fifteen years ago, with the view to putting them together in a frame or display for each of his children for the decimal anniversary, being 50 years of 50 cent coins. For many years, any 50 cent coins went into a jar. As it got closer to 2016, Lex decided it was time to sort through the coins, setting up the 50 year collections and choosing the better quality coins for his two sets for his children. He accessed information

They are both sweet and playful kittens who are great with kids, other cats and dogs. Loui is a little mischief maker, who loves wrestling with the other kittens, while Lenny loves snuggling up on the couch. There are also some older

from the Australian Mint web site, getting detailed information on the everyday 50 cent coins. He gathered information such as who designed the two faces of the coins (obverse and reverse), the years that 50 cent coins were not minted, and the number of coins minted each year. There are many years that special coins were minted to celebrate such occasions as anniversaries of Australian history like the First Fleet, Bass and Flinders, Weary Dunlop, Brisbane Commonwealth Games and the Centenary of Federation. There were also minted coins celebrating Australian volunteers, Year of the Outback, Year of 2000 Millennium and so on. To finish off the display, he decided to place coin mint sets at the base of the display. kittens and adult cats in care available. Male kittens are $200 and female kittens are $250. The adoption fee includes desexing, microchipping, vaccinations, flea and worm treatments. The KITTY Rescue Project

These sets being the predecimal coins (shillings and pence), a 1966 decimal set (start of decimal currency), a 2016 decimal set (50th anniversary of decimal currency) and his children’s birth years. Lex shared with News Of The Area, “We have a family get together every year for Christmas at our place and I was lucky enough to have my son’s framed set completed before our family gathering, which I put on show and everyone was impressed with the final product.” “Now that the set collections are complete, my 50 cents coins go into my grandchildren’s money boxes and hopefully they will be just as impressed with my contributions for their future as my children are with their 50 cent framed presentation.”

is also looking for new volunteers to help foster new litters and older cats. For more information on fostering or adopting, please call Amanda on 0409058664, or visit the website www. kittyrescueproject.org.

A MEDOWIE mother helped support her 12-year-old daughter with the World’s Greatest Shave by joining in on the festivities. Lisa Nicholson recently decided to help her 12-yearold daughter with the nerves of becoming bald for charity by sitting alongside her and getting her head shaved too. The event, which took place at Market Place Raymond Terrace on 16 March, saw the family gather round in order for Brooke to raise money and awareness for the Leukemia foundation. Lisa Nicholson told News Of The Area: “I wasn’t happy with my hair so I thought it would be a great opportunity to shave it in order to support Brooke and help her feel more comfortable.” “I’m glad I did it as it made

Choices For Parents in Port Stephens’ Primary Schools By Heather SHARP

ETHICS classes, organised by the Primary Ethics association, are now being offered across Port Stephens. In schools where it is offered, parents and their

children now have the option of either allowing their child to receive religious education, commonly called Scripture and taught by a volunteer who is also a member of a local church, allowing their child to attend Ethics class also facilitated by a volunteer from the local community, or to have supervised free time. Schools in Port Stephens

that currently offer Ethics Classes include Medowie Public School, the first in the region to begin this program in 2012, Shoal Bay, Anna Bay and Wirreanda Public Schools. Parents in other schools are also looking into establishing Ethics classes. The impetus for the choice of Ethics rather

than Scripture came about by those members of the wider community who were concerned that religion was being taught in schools, which many proponents of Ethics argue is not appropriate in a secular jurisdiction. The Ethics classes offered are based on secular (or, non-religious) principles of viewing the world.

Brooke feel more confident and now we have matching hairstyles,” she said. Brooke has now raised $1894 for the foundation, with an original goal of $250. “I wasn’t nervous until I sat down in the chair and started cutting off my own ponytail,” Brooke said. Her friends and school have been very supportive, putting her in their newsletter, Facebook page and making donations to her fund. “I found the experience very rewarding and I’m glad I did it, although I am missing my long hair,” Brooke said. Donations will still be accepted until June 30 and can be made by searching Brooke Nicholson under the ‘sponsor a friend’ tab on the World’s Greatest Shave’ website.

q Students now have the option to attend Ethics class during the commonly-offered Scripture class time. Please support the advertisers within the Medowie News Of The Area as they are bringing you your local news each week.

Ms Heidi McElnea, Communications Manager for Primary Ethics told News Of The Area, “In Ethics classes, children learn how to think logically, disagree respectfully and support their arguments with evidence, rather than act according to blind habit or peer pressure.” “They consider decisions that affect them, their friends and family and the whole world. These thinking skills, once learned, accompany them into adulthood.” The conundrum for parents and their children is whether to replace their child’s attendance at the long-running, traditional Scripture class model with a new, secular, Ethics class. Ms McElnea also said, “There are 78 topics from kindergarten to year 6, all approved by the Department of Education.” There are many options to weigh up in the quest for different organisations to influence children’s perspectives and formal schooling. For more information about the Ethics curriculum go to: www.primaryethics. com.au.

Vandals Damage Parks By Rachael VAUGHAN

WITH great disappointment, yet again Medowie finds itself victim to a few thoughtless individuals who damage local ovals and park facilities for a dangerous thrill leaving the community with the mess to clean up and the bills to pay. Medowie is a proud community and the vast majority of residents, young and old, make wonderful contributions, only to have this kind of event carried out by the minority overshadowing the positives. Medowie Tidy Towns members Ms Pauline Avery and Mr Geoff Dingle recorded damage carried out on Friday evening the 24 March to the Coolabah playground reserve, with deep tracks churned by a car into the grounds and spraying mud and debris over paving and the

children’s play equipment. Mr Dingle told Medowie News Of The Area, “It was only this same afternoon around 4.00pm I took my grandchildren to the Coolabah park to enjoy the rope climb and swing complex, they had a great time with the youngest making the climb to the very top for the first time.” “They would be devastated to see this mess.” “This was a deliberate act of vandalism and makes a strong argument for higher police presence after sunset in our community.” In recent weeks there has been damage to Boyd, Ferodale, Yulong and Kindlebark ovals, and there is bound to be more if the people responsible are not held to account. If you, or anyone you know, has any information about any recent incidents they should contact the Police Assistance Line and report any intelligence including times, numbers of

Ms O’Neill and her family are frantically working on fitting out the shop ready for their opening scheduled in two weeks’ time on Tuesday 18 April, 2017. past few weeks.” “I have noted an increased police presence in daylight hours, but these incidents need to be reported so that the records show what is needed for

evening patrols when schedules are made.” Medowie needs to take a stand with anti-social behaviour, and report those who are ruining its peace and safety.

THERE is an exciting new shop opening in Medowie, with Tomatoes in Abundance and Natural Food Collective joining forces to bring to Medowie a one-stop shop for fresh chemical free produce as well as all raw, natural and organic wholefoods, pantry staples and bulk wholefoods. Ms Nicole O’Neill, from Tomatoes in Abundance told News Of The Area, “We started Tomatoes in Abundance in honour of a great man, our Grandfather, Luis Rodriguez.” “Now, based completely on our passion and philosophy of doing everything in a fair and ethical way, and by treating the environment, the land, and the produce with

respect and generosity we are following a chemical free path and only using organic practices.” “We had no idea the interest and demand for chemical free produce would be as great as it is, so because of this we are bringing to Medowie the best in organic and chemical free produce as well as whole foods and pantry staples and making them as affordable as possible.” “We will be providing the community with the best fresh produce straight from our farm in Medowie and a great range of high quality, nutritious, healthy, ethically sourced pantry staples and health products as our priority.

Hunter Connect Connecting Families By Rachael VAUGHAN HUNTER Connect is a not for profit group supporting children with Autism, ADD, ADHD, ODD, Fragile X and developmental delays, and is open to anyone attending its support groups and events from Newcastle, Port Stephens, Upper Hunter and Central Coast. Hunter Connect Families relies on donations and grants to hold events and run its impressive list of programs, such as Yoga classes planned specifically for children with special needs and its annual ‘Surfers with Autism’ event. The group also runs the internationally acclaimed “Secret Agent Social Skills Program”. This program is a Computer Game Pack and Small Group Program designed to help children eight to 12 years of age crack the code of emotions and

friendships, and develop the skills to feel happier, calmer and braver while making new friends and keeping them. Hunter Connect also runs the Siblinks program which is a six-week program for siblings to come along and share their experiences and feelings of what living with a sibling with additional needs means for them. The group has always been about supporting, connecting and advocating for the entire family. Hunter Connect CEO, Rachael Corrigan, told News Of The Area, “It is the belief of Hunter Connect Families that if the whole family including siblings are not supported, then the family unit cannot possibly remain in unison to support the children with additional needs.” This year, the group will reinstate its group sessions and support groups for families. They will be run on the first Wednesday of every month at 7pm, and held at

Koala Rehab By Rachael VAUGHAN

ONE very special Koala has come into care with the dedicated carers at Port Stephens Koalas for some much-needed rehabilitation. Heather, a koala from the Tilligerry area, has been known to the carers since 2007. At that time, she was considered aged, which for a Koala is around nine to ten years old. Fast forward to 2017 and Heather is still alive, an impressive age for a koala. Most recently, Heather came into care with poor mobility and climbing strength, in need of rehabilitation. This rehabilitation has taken place with the team at

Noah’s Ark Veterinary Clinic. Dr Ilona Hudson told News Of The Area, “After three rehab sessions with me and an exercise program with her carers, she was spotted using her front limbs to climb last night.” “While it is early days and she still needs daily supplementary feeds and a lot of rehabilitation work, this is very promising early news.” Dr Hudson praised the dedicated team of carers from Port Stephens Koalas. “I can’t emphasise enough the importance of the work the koala carers do.” “I can only guide them in the rehabilitation process, they have to do all the work and the results speak for themselves.”

6 MEDOWIE & TILLIGERRY NEWS OF THE AREA

Noah’s Ark veterinary services in Medowie and Nelson Bay have saved hundreds of koalas over the past 20 years. Drs Don Hudson and Ilona Hudson donate their time and skills to help save the Port Stephens’ koala population, which is vital to the future of the area’s koalas. If you come across an injured or distressed koala, it is of utmost importance that you seek assistance for the marsupial. The Port Stephens Koala volunteers can be reached twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, by calling 0418 628 483. Consider storing the number in your phone for easy access when needed. Contact them if you are in any doubt of a koala’s well being.

VOLUNTEERS are needed in the Port Stephens area to support Compeer. Compeer is a community mental health program, under the banner of the St Vincent De Paul Society. It aims to improve the quality of life and self-esteem of adults with mental health issues through one-to-one friendship with a caring volunteer. Friends meet up regularly for simple social activities, such as grabbing a bite to eat, going for a walk or visiting a local attraction. A Compeer friendship addresses the stigma and isolation associated with mental illness, and provides a rewarding and social volunteer experience. Sarah Adams, Compeer

NewsOfTheArea.com.au

Hunter Co-ordinator told News Of The Area, “Often, when people receive a mental health diagnosis, they can experience isolation from the community, and sometimes even from family and friends.” “This is where Compeer comes in, with the new friendship starting with a one-on-one hang out for an hour a week to do social activities.” “We currently have 38 matches or active friendships which have turned into long lasting friendships,” Ms Adams said. Once people are feeling well and ready to engage in different elements of the community, they are referred to the program and are matched to a one-on-one friendship with a volunteer. “We have people on our books aging from 18- 87 years and are hoping to introduce youth ranging from 16- 18 years soon,” Sarah Adams added.

Whether going out for a coffee, venturing down to the wharf for some fish ‘n’ chips, or conquering Tomaree Mountain, Compeer friends have a wonderful time getting to know each other. The program first started in 2010 in Newcastle and the Hunter but has been successful Australian wide since 1995. Research shows that all people need a positive network of social support and friendship to maintain positive mental health. Compeer is open to adults aged 18 and over living with mental illness. If you would like to volunteer to be a Compeer Friend Volunteer, training will be given to you and starts soon. Contact Sarah Adams at sarah.adams@vinnies.org. au for more information.

Dear Jasminda,

Easter is just around the corner and it just feels like another day where we have to live up to false expectations and buy lots of chocolate for ungrateful family members. How do we survive?

Walk to D’Feet MND By Rachael VAUGHAN

THE family of Brenton Teasdale took part in a very special event in his memory this week. The 32 year old father of three lost his life on 17 October last year, after battling Motor Neurone Disease (MND) for just over two years. He left behind his beloved wife Tina and their three children Tailor, Jerrome and Meisha. Tina, her children and family members completed the Hunter Walk to D’Feet MND event this week to honour the man they dearly miss.

q Tina Teasdale and her children Tailor, Meisha and Jerrome.

Mrs RL, Medowie Dear

Dear Mrs. RL,

When Easter buns started hitting the supermarket shelves not long after Boxing Day, that was the line in the sand that made it clear that retail expectations were totally out of sync with reality. I mean it’s bad enough that there are sales right after Christmas with disco light popcorn makers that result in third degree burns and epileptic fits (now half price). But the added pressure of Easter buns? Sheer madness, Mrs RL. Whatever way you sway in a spiritual sense, Easter should be all about family and thankfulness. You cannot, of course, look like the family in the advertising brochures, because they are in a studio with soft lighting and silk pyjamas and a husband holding a tray of croissants with jam, his rippled torso stretching out to reach for a Bilby for little Miriam. That’s not reality, Mrs RL. Reality is making up impossible clues to find Easter eggs to teach the kids some good old Ricky Resilience. Reality is having the dog’s stomach pumped because he started the egg hunt two hours before the family. Reality is putting on two kilos in 24 hours and then lining up for a baked dinner. And there’s something kind of wholesome in that, something that the advertising gurus will never capture. If they could bottle it, they would.

Carpe diem, Jasminda.

the Pony Club grounds in Raymond Terrace for some time, then onto the property of Allen Jennings and Wendy Ward at Heatherbrae. With the help of Bruce MacKenzie and Port Stephen Council the club again moved to the present ground at Richardson Road, Salt Ash and can now hold events comfortably on eight arenas including two sand arenas. They consistently have around 250 entries on a

weekend event. In 2016, the club had 302 members, of those 40 were youth and 15 junior members. They have 14 active committee members and 12 enthusiastic sponsors. On the 24 March 2017, Alexander Park Dressage Club was awarded Equestrian Australia Club of the Year for 2016. The awards evening was held in Brisbane and five of committee attended the evening. This award covers all equestrian events, not just Dressage, and is decided upon from entrants from all States and Territories of Australia. Vice-President of

Alexander Park Dressage Club, Bruce McVey, told News Of The Area, “We are thrilled to receive this award on behalf of our committee, members, volunteers and sponsors who have all helped to make the club so successful.” “We all have something in common; the love of the horse.” “We strive to put the “wow” factor into attending an Alexander Park Dressage Club event and if everyone who comes to our day goes home saying, “Wow, I had a great day”, then we have achieved our goal,” he said. You can visit the club’s webpage at www.apdc.net.au or on their Facebook page.

By Heather SHARP GATHERING at the Greenhouse Eatery on Sunday afternoon were around 100 tea drinkers keen to support the fundraising effort of a group of six women who will be travelling to the Philippines on 17 April to provide aid to women and children in Manila as part of the Compassion Project. Led by Katie Lavender and Katrina Becker the tireless duo worked hard to ensure the high tea ran smoothly, which incorporated a fashion parade and shopping opportunity. Well supported by local businesses, MC for the event, Ms Cath Breadner announced that over $9500 worth of prizes were donated to the raffle. Many homebased businesses, such as Melody Hughes’ Jamberry Nails attended the event to showcase their goods and services, donating their time and resources to make it a success. Ms Kate Lavender told Medowie News Of The Area, “We go as part of the Compassion Project to sponsor mothers and babies.” “We meet their medical, nutritional, and other needs, and we feed street children too.”

The Medowie residents will also visit Filipino women who are in jail to provide care packs. The Philippines’ incarceration system is such that families or charities provide essential items to those who are serving time in jail, so this support is a necessity for many women. Ms Lavender also explained, “The money raised aims to assist women in the Philippines living on less than $1 per day to develop the skills and knowledge required to start a business in their local area.” Imugi Fit, one of the main sponsors of the fundraiser, will be continuing its support by holding a special group fitness session this Thursday, 6 April, 9.30am at 3 Settlers Close, Medowie. Mr Tony Gillespie, the 2017 Port Stephens Sportsperson of the Year, will lead attendees through their paces in a friendly workout environment. A group fundraising yoga session will also be held through Imugi fitness earlier the same day at 6.00am, facilitated by Summa Trappel. The $10 fee will be fully donated to the Compassion Project, and people with all levels of fitness are welcome to attend.
