Birriwal the Crane By Rachael VAUGHAN

SCARLETT Lewis, is a young girl of many talents. She is a Wirreanda Public School student, a keen quilter, a girl guide, and now among many other endeavours, a namer of cranes! A few months back, Wirreanda Public School students were proud to liaise with Williamtown RAAF Base and CPB construction

company to enter a competition to name the giant crane towering over the RAAF base development works at Williamtown, Students were given the opportunity to paint, draw, colour and make a model of the crane, as well as name it. There were so many wonderfully talented entrants, and the school was very proud of the combined efforts of its students.

Scarlett Lewis was the overall winner of the whole competition, after making a great deal of effort to choose the name. Scarlett liaised with Vicki Griffiths from the local Worimi Land Council to choose the name ‘Birriwal’ for this giant crane. Birriwal means big and strong in the traditional language of the Worimi people.

THE recent spate of four, likely deliberately lit, bushfires on the Tilligerry Peninsula point to the work of arsonists. Two fires were reported in the foreshore scrub between Mallabula and Tanilba Bay, one in the vicinity of Mallabula Oval and one near the substation on the old rutile road between Tanilba Bay and Oyster Cove.

Multiple ignition points indicate the work of arsonists. The local Tilligerry Rural Fire Service (RFS) had the fires in hand quickly. It would have been a very different story had they been lit at the height of summer with strong winds prevailing. Authorities warn of hefty fines and jail sentences for those deliberately lighting bushfires or burning off outside the designated cooler months. Residents are also asked be mindful of suspicious behaviour in and around the urban bushland interface and to report this to police. A photographic record would assist with prosecutions.

Cabbage Tree Road Work Done UPDATE

REHABILITATION works at Cabbage Tree Road, Williamtown have been completed by Port Stephens Council ahead of time and within budget. The works, which were undertaken on behalf of Roads and Maritime Services (RMS), saw Cabbage Tree Road closed to westbound traffic for approximately six weeks. Phil Miles, Council’s Capital Works Section Manager, says this is a positive result for residents

and ratepayers. “I’m impressed with the way our crew worked hard to complete the road rehabilitation ahead of schedule, so as to cause as little disruption as possible to residents, workers and commuters,” Mr Miles said. “I want to thank the residents of Williamtown, who were extremely patient and cooperative with us throughout the works and ultimately helped to achieve this positive outcome,” he added.

Mr Miles said that while the rehabilitation works are now complete, they will require further attention next year. “As part of rehabilitating a road, we place the initial seal now and then put an additional seal down in 12 months’ time. This gives the road time to settle, leading to a more consistent finish and a smoother drive in the long run,” he said.

Olympics in his Sights

AFTER winning many gymnastics trophies including ‘Athlete of the Year’ Josh Thompson has his sights set on the Olympics. The eight year old from Lemon Tree Passage started early as mother Jade explains, “We lived in a house with polished floors and one day as a toddler he said, ‘Look mum!’ I turned around to see that he had done the splits! We steered him into gymnastics since the age of four and he hasn’t looked back.” Jade trains weekly at Glendale and performs the

standard six multi disciplinary routines of adult male gymnasts. The rings and the high bar are his favourites. His seven major trophies include ‘Athlete of the Year NSW’; ‘Country Championship ‘ (two years running) and 5th in NSW. Josh also gained two firsts, a second and a fourth in the Grand Prix series. On top of this he has been selected for a high performance training squad in Sydney. “We are very proud of Josh, his dedication and his achievements,” his mother, and lifeguard at Tilligerry Aquatic Centre, remarked.

I’ve been trying to think of an ideal present for my children’s teacher. Any ideas? Mrs MM, Anna Bay

Dear Mrs MM,

The end-of-year festivities at schools throughout the region are an absolute joy for parents. They start with a note about buying a secret Santa gift for a kid you’ve never met (present number one) and regress from there. There’s the ‘dress up as your favourite Christmas Carol’ and bring a gold coin event (a three-hour Kmart visit before you end up sending your child in a green T-shirt with baubles pinned to every inch of fabric because his “branches green delight us”. Then add 200 candy canes since Claudette wants to improve her social status by giving every kid in primary school a festive gift. Behold the end-of-year presentation where you get to see Jemima Chase-Augenstino receive the Academic Award for the fifth year in a row, while your little Benny gets the ‘Improved Anger Management’ certificate and Mrs Chase-Augenstino smiles at you like the cat that ate the cream bun and says, “Oh, what a lovely surprise for both of us.” As someone who has many friends and relatives in the profession (bless their little cotton socks full of resilience and dedication), let me just tell you what they don’t want this year, in no particular order: a signed copy of The Complete Burke’s Backyard. A Donald Trump doll that says, “It’s fake news; Hillary did it; I will build a great wall” and various other gems when you pat his toupee. A mug that has been printed with a photo of your child (these gifts can be very off-putting to the teacher’s actual children when they visit on Christmas Day). Tenyear-old resource books that you found in your attic that you feel will be handy in the classroom (they won’t be). $100 in a brown paper bag in exchange for next year’s Academic Award for little Benny (teachers have strict moral codes that can’t be cracked). Finally, anything that they will have difficulty fitting in their car boot on the last day of school (though it is possibly fair payback for all the dog-eared books, paintings, half-chewed erasers, broken pencils and various other items that your child brings home from school on their last day). You know, Mrs MM, you really can’t go wrong with a gift voucher and a heartfelt message from your child on a handmade card. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

TAG opens the doors of their new gallery

THE Tilligerry Arts Group Inc (TAG) have officially opened their new Gallery, with a special ceremony and open afternoon at their new premises in the old Lemon Tree Passage Rural Fire Brigade Building at 13 Meredith St Lemon Tree Passage. The move to the new Gallery and initial basic refurbishment was made possible by a number of very supportive parties who have generously provided financial, physical and moral support, making this new facility a truly community supported initiative. Port Stephens Council granted a Licence of Occupation, while Councillor Steve Tucker organised Council funds for basic building repairs. Donations were gratefully received from Tilligerry Lions Club and Club Lemon Tree, while the then Mayor Bruce MacKenzie provided some Mayoral funding. Tilligerry Men’s Shed, members and partners of members, assisted with a wide range of further renovations and repairs, as well as providing the ‘muscle’ to move everything from one Gallery to the other. Di Stubbs, Publicity Officer at TAG told News Of The Area, “The new Gallery is just beautiful!” “We have retained the charm of the old fire station

building, and incorporated those features into creating a wonderful, modern space for our art gallery.” TAG is very grateful to five Lemon Tree/Mallabula locals who provided the group with their very welcome services. Lene Twomey of Norsk Design worked very patiently with Committee members to design and develop this website and then secured us the hosting services of Digital Pacific. Nat and Jim Robertson of JN Industries Property Improvements were longsuffering, adapting to the many changes of design for the glass windows and doors to modernise the Fire Station roller door. Lauren Dennison, the Activities Organiser from Bunnings Taylors Beach, who donated painting supplies and organised with Michelle Wilmott, Sales Executive of Dulux to provide free paint. The group also wish to give thanks to Coastal Real Estate & Property Management, Tanilba Bay, who have for many years sponsored the groups occupation of their previous premises in the Kooindah Centre. Di said “A very big thank you to all of our members and their partners who have also been so supportive as we made this exciting transition to our new premises.”

Scouts lend a helping hand

THE 1st Medowie Scout Group have been participating in the International Scouting Messenger of Peace Initiative. Messengers of Peace is a global initiative, launched by the World Organisation of the Scouting Movement (WOSM), based on the WOSM slogan of Creating a Better World, globally by acting locally. The group have been busy collecting coloured pencils and colouring-in books to distribute to the hospitals, women’s shelters and police stations in the area. This will enable children

in hospital and whose families are in crisis to be able to have a creative outlet to help them through some tough times. The Group has also been collecting five Cent Pieces which they then laid end to end across the Medowie Community Centre Hall on Wednesday night, to see how long a chain they could make.
