Trading Up By Geoff WALKER IT is becoming more common for females to launch themselves into the ‘down and dirty’ careers once reserved for men. Olivia McDonald from Lemon Tree Passage, a year 10 student at Hunter River High sees a possible future as a motor mechanic. “My father is into tow trucks and I enjoy helping him,” she said. “I’m very grateful for being given the opportunity of work experience at Tanilba Bay Automotive. This way I can see what it’s really like to be a mechanic.” Meanwhile, year 11 Tomaree High student Toby White has already made up his mind. “I just love cars,” he said. “I help my dad and would very much like to follow this pathway in life.”

IN a true nod to the provision of quality early learning education for our young people, Medowie Community Preschool has again celebrated a longserving employee’s service at the preschool. This week, Monica Murray was recognised for her twenty five years of consecutive service at Medowie Community Preschool. The staff at the preschool have an impressive long service history, with the staff collectively bringing 115 years of service to the centre between them. Of note, director Michele Ireland this year celebrates 31 years at the centre, and fellow staff member Denise Dawe has chalked up 24 years of service. Monica was presented with flowers and a

beautiful piece of jewellery, at the centre’s impressive Mother’s Day celebration, in front of a record crowd of attendees. The preschool invited all mothers, grandmothers, and significant maternal figures in the lives of their young charges to celebrate with an extravagant morning tea, speeches, presentations and lucky door prizes. Kellie Reddon, a parent at Medowie Community Preschool, said the centre has built a strong reputation for quality education in Medowie. “The educators are extremely passionate about every child developing to their own full potential during preschool days, and doing that not only through their extensive knowledge in early education but also by the love and care they give each child. “The educators go above and beyond to give the children the best

Mini Yoga buddies By Rachael VAUGHAN
THE benefits of yoga are being soaked up by the smallest Port Stephens residents, and they are thriving. Local preschools are booking yoga classes alongside the traditional soccer lessons, puppet theatres and mobile libraries to visit their centres and work with children. Medowie Community
Preschool is one such centre, inviting Aimee Angelique from Medowie Yoga to join them on Mondays to work with their students. Aimee Angelique said she is so pleased with the enthusiasm from the preschoolers she has met so far. “Over the last two terms of having yoga at Medowie Community Preschool, I have

seen the children develop strength, flexibility and also seen it help their coordination and balance.” “Michele and the other beautiful teachers have told me that when I am not there they often have the children practicing their yoga poses and also their “Oms” which makes me feel so happy and proud.” “I have also seen over the past couple of terms the children’s concentration improve and we have been able to take their relaxation at the end from about one minute to a full five minutes which is amazing for three to five year olds to be able to lay still for that long,” she said. Yoga has some wonderful benefits for young children including, but not limited to enhancing concentration, increasing flexibility and balance, improving general well-being, boosting confidence and relaxing their minds.

NOTA Celebrates First Birthday By Heather SHARP
NEWS Of The Area this week celebrated its first year anniversary delivering local news to the people of Medowie, Williamtown, Fullerton Cove, Salt Ash, and surrounding areas. The paper recently expanded into the Tilligerry Peninsula. Bucking the trend that there is limited to no demand for print media, your local newspaper provides high quality reporting in its weekly news, and is independently owned and operated. With an average readership of 2000 per week, this community newspaper is having a big impact. The first edition was published on 2 June, 2016. Reporter since the first edition, Simone Johnson, also a journalism student at the University of Newcastle, said “Working with NOTA has given me experience in the industry that I am studying to become a part of.” Ms Johnson, who has recently been awarded a coveted internship with the ABC added, “It means I have been able to meet new friends in the community and share stories that need to be heard.” Seasoned journalist, Geoff Walker, joined the newspaper when it expanded into the Tilligerry Peninsula. STORM Damage mixed martial arts light heavyweight champion, David Morley, is set to defend his title in Canberra soon. The Storm Damage MMA Australia light heavyweight title will be contested in Canberra on 9 September, so David has a full three months of preparation ahead of him. The Medowie father told News Of The Area, “My opponent is Dean Maxwell, who is an up and coming fighter, with his last two fights ending with a submission, and KO with his hand raised.”
David started Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) eight years ago, because he was inspired to have an amateur boxing fight, but was met with a lack of enthusiasm by his old gym in Newcastle. David decided to make his idea a reality, and rang Jamie Ballard at Ballard’s Academy of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts at Beresfield. David said “I fell in love with everyone there, it is such a great atmosphere!” “I can’t speak highly enough of Jamie and Melissa Ballard, Dino Legovich, Craig McEvoy, Daniel Murray, and
my whole jiu jitsu family; they have done more for me than I can put into words.” “I highly encourage kids and adults to have a go at jiu jitsu, it’s life changing!” Before beginning BJJ and MMA, David was 128kg, smoking a pack of cigarettes a day, and couldn’t walk a flight of stairs without losing his breath. He is now a fit 100kg, though he fights at 93kg. David said “This will be my last MMA fight, as I have proved to myself what I have needed to.” “It is so all-consuming preparing for fights, it’s a
massive burden on my family, so I feel it’s time for me to step back, spend some more time with my family and work on some young fellas at the gym who want to have a fight.” “I’ve fallen in love with teaching some q David Morley is preparing to defend of the skills I his title. have learnt over the last eight years, and have Project Health and Fitness begun to teach kickboxing in Medowie on Friday at Ballards on Tuesday and mornings,” he said. It was sad to see the centre close its doors all those years ago with only the ‘Squashie Takeaway’ keeping the place alive, however Medowie Sports Centre is coming back to life, stage by exciting stage. Under the watchful eye and careful planning of owner Colin Carter, the centre has had a momentous first year, with a number of their facilities and retailers open and trading to the residents of Medowie, and a number more to come. First up was the crew at
Plus Fitness, a 24 hour gym, also offering classes and personal training with their zany and positive staff. They brought along with them the Munchkins Creche soon after, with Tammy and Sam offering top quality childcare for anyone using any of the centre facilities, by making sure our littlest Medowie residents are taken care of. The husband and wife team of Carol and Chris opened the Sportz Cafe doors in those first weeks, bringing us top quality local coffee, amazing food, and most importantly wonderful customer care and service.

Next up was the opening of the original squash courts, professionally restored to their former glory and modernised. Joining the team is the new supplement store, Medowie Sports and Family Physio, Massage and Bowen therapists, junior gym and yoga. So where to from here for Medowie Sports Centre, you ask. There has been talk around town about the next exciting stages, and the centre manager, Steve Bentley, shared the news with News Of The Area. “We’re really proud of how far we’ve come in our first year of being open, and even more
excited about what is still to come.” “We are breaking ground on the pool complex soon and we are looking forward to sharing the exciting news around that with you all soon.” “Work will also commence soon on the exterior of the building, carparks and lots more.” “The finished centre is going to be a wonderful thing for Medowie residents,” he said. News Of The Area will keep residents up to date as each new stage of the complex begins.

OzTag Five team head to
Ireland
By Rachael VAUGHAN
q Hanna Robinson, Marley Robinson, Alexander Napoli, Briennen Carter and Taylah Smith will represent Port Stephens and Australia in Ireland.
A TALENTED team of OzTag players from Port Stephens has a jam-packed, sportsfilled trip coming up. They head to Ireland on 8 July for 18 days with players from all over Australia to compete in a number of comps and tournaments. The players will represent Australia in a number of different tournaments while over there. Included will be a trination tournament with Australia, Ireland and Great Britain, as well as several local and regional competitions. The tour was open to all players who have qualified to
play at a state representative level, so we are lucky to have such a strong number representing Port Stephens in this special team. Due to there being players from all over the country attending the tour, preparation has been difficult as a team, so it has largely been up to the individuals to train, and keep up their fitness. The players chosen from Port Stephens all play on a Monday night at the Salamander Bay fields and most of them will get in extra training as often as they can. The experience level for these players ranges from two years to five years.
Tanya Napoli, Club Treasurer of Port Stephens OzTag, told News Of The Area, “We are a small Oztag Club in comparison to many others, so we are extremely proud of our players who are heading to Ireland to represent and promote the sport we love.” “If anyone would like to help any of the players with their trip, feel free to contact the club via our Facebook page and one of our committee members will put you in contact with the players.” News Of The Area wishes these representative players all the very best for their trip.
