Hoards Of Talent By Daniel SAHYOUN CONNOR Baker said performing in ASPIRE’s production of The Hoarders Next Door at the Civic Theatre last week was an “incredible” experience. “The shows were amazing,” Connor said. “At first I was really nervous, but then I was fine and I loved it.” The Year 6 student from St Joseph’s Primary School

in Bulahdelah was selected for the starring role of Monty after his dramatic flair was noticed during auditions. “I got the role just by practicing my hardest,” Connor told News Of The Area. “I couldn’t believe it when I got in, I was so excited, it was such a privilege to receive it.” The cast was made up of 130 actors, singers, dancers and musicians

Connor said after months of travelling to rehearsals in Newcastle to perfect the musical spectacular, there was certainly a buzz of excitement as the curtain lifted on opening night. “I am practically famous there now, I walked out and everyone was cheering, going crazy about it,” he said. “My fellow performers

Connor said he saw ASPIRE’s first production when he was in kindergarten and “loved them straightaway”. “People from Aspire also came to the school last year and did all

these drama games with us, it was really fun and exciting so I decided that I would give it a go,” he said. With his first professional production now confidently under his belt, the talented

Council has been actively working on plans over the last few months to develop Alum Mountain into a culturally significant tourist site. This has included working with NSW Forestry Corporation to improve road access to the Mountain. Len said although

the mountain has been deemed an Aboriginal Place, “it is still Bulahdelah and it is still community”. “Being an Aboriginal Place means that you have an Aboriginal management plan of how you will look after it and enhance its cultural values,” Len said.

Len said the work to develop Alum Mountain will be undertaken by teams from the Aboriginal Land Council. “We have to celebrate our culture, we have to celebrate our heritage, and hopefully we can do it,” Len said.

Big Brass to Tea Gardens By Margie TIERNEY

IF you love a brass band, then head to the Tea Gardens Baptist Church on Sunday 20 August for a concert by the Maitland Salvation Army Band. “This is the first time the entire band will be playing in Tea Gardens,” Alan Calcutt told News Of The Area. The band is made up of around 25 members. “You don’t see bands of this size these days,” Alan said. “I’ve heard them many times and they’re a feast of brass music.” There will be afternoon tea and entry is a gold coin donation. The concert starts at 2.30pm, with all

proceeds going to the Salvation Army. Alan and wife Ruth both have a passion for brass band. The couple is also passionate about their “Time Out for Skills Day” at the Baptist Church every fourth Friday of the month. Residents from Peter Sinclair Gardens and Estia Health join church members on ‘Skills Day’ for a day of art and craft. On Friday 22 September the group will be taking part in what’s called the ‘Shoebox Project’. “We have 30 special shoeboxes to fill with six things in each,” Ruth said. “Something to

wear, something to love, something special such as a bangle or photo, something for school, something to play with and something for personal hygiene.” The A4-size shoe boxes are decorated for a child and once filled will make their way to youngsters in underprivileged countries. Since the Shoebox Project began, 11.5million have been sent out to children in need worldwide, nearly 350,000 from Australia. “Last Christmas they were sent to Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Ukraine, Samoa, Fiji and PNG,” Ruth said. Everything in the

shoeboxes is new or handmade, bringing joy to a child less fortunate.

Line Dancing Champions By Margie TIERNEY

MANY Myall Coast locals will know John Hughes through his work as president of the local Lions Club. But John has another passion: line dancing. John and wife Jennifer have been line dancing for over 20 years and have both won medals in the Australian Line Dancing Championships. Recently the Hawks Nest couple travelled to Melbourne for the “Southern State Line Dance Championships’’. “Jennifer was a judge and I was an MC and DJ over the weekend,” John told News Of the Area. “We have been a part of the Southern State Line Dance Championships since it began 8 years ago.” “I gave up competing a few years ago and have been involved in the MC/ DJ role ever since.’’ “This was the first year that Jennifer has not competed in the championships so she was able to devote time to being part of the judging panel,” John said. Their involvement in the SSLDC was recognised in 2015 when they were inducted into the Southern State Line Dance Championships. John was also President of

the Line Dance Association of Australia from 2014 to 2016. Jennifer is a very well known in the line dance world as a top competitor, choreographer and instructor. “She ran the Northern Rider’s Line Dance Club for

many years in Sydney before moving to Hawks Nest,” John said. Jennifer now runs Myall Coast Line Dancers and conducts two classes at the Masonic Lodge Hall in Tea Gardens on a Monday afternoon and Thursday

evening. If you’d like to join in a great fun class or for more information you can contact John on 0409 399 817.

Veterans Day Commemorations

Please support the advertisers within the Myall Coast News Of The Area as they are bringing you your local news each week.

TEA Gardens RSL Sub Branch is hosting two activities this year as part of the commemoration of Veterans Day. Up until recently, 18 August, the anniversary of the Vietnam War’s Battle of Long Tan, was known as Vietnam Veterans Day. However, with the passage of time since this conflict, and the need to include the ever increasing number of veterans who have been involved in subsequent conflicts and other deployments , such as Afghanistan, East Timor, Kuwait and Peacekeeping,

it was agreed the day’s name be changed to Veterans Day. Thursday 17 August will see the 2017 Veterans Bowls Day held at the Tea Gardens Country Club, commencing from 11am for a barbecue lunch with bowls commencing from 1pm. The day is open to all interested players and those interested should either contact the club directly or be at the club by 12 noon on the day. Friday 18 August is Veterans Day. Tea Gardens RSL Sub Branch will be conducting a commemoration service at

Tea Gardens Anzac Park from 11am Attendees are requested to be at the park from 10.45am. A courtesy bus is available to transport attendees from the Country Club to Anzac Park from 10.15am. The service will be followed by lunch at the Tea Gardens Country Club. Members of Raymond Terrace, Karuah and Bulahdelah Sub Branches will also be in attendance. All members of the public are welcome to attend.

Yellowtail Meeting

By Margie TIERNEY

THE community is being invited to a forum to hear the latest on the controversial Huon Yellowtail Kingfish Research Project. Representatives from the NSW Department of Primary Industries and the Huon Group will be on hand for the presentation being hosted by the Hawks/Tea Gardens Progress Association. The project began late last year with tens of thousands of the yellowtail kingfish fingerlings being

released into an offshore sea pen at Providence Bay off Hawks Nest. At the time, NSW Minister for Primary Industries Niall Blair said the trial had the potential to dramatically increase local seafood supply. Local environmentalists have argued the pens are in the wrong spot, with whales becoming entangled. Divers claim the pens are attracting sharks. “We are aware there has been some concern within the community about the

environmental impacts of the project as well as other issues,” Patricia Garrard from the Progress Association told News Of The Area. “This is an opportunity to hear more about the project from the people who are conducting and overseeing it and ask them questions.” The presentation is being held on Monday 14 August at 7pm in the Old Library on Booner Street at Hawks Nest. Patricia added, “Please come along and learn more about this important & interesting initiative.”

My husband and I take turns making each other our morning hot beverage. He is a coffee drinker and I drink tea. It takes me about 45 seconds to make a cup of tea, but five minutes to make him a coffee (he insists that I use the cappuccino maker). I think, therefore, that he should make the morning drinks four times to my one, to balance it out a bit. Dear Mrs JT,

Mrs JT, Medowie

IF we are going to go into a tit-for-tat war, I think you need to go into this with a little more detail. Based on your calculations, the gain made is 300 seconds minus your 45 (255 seconds), which is a four-minute advantage (give or take 25 seconds) multiplied by 365 days, which equals 1,460 minutes or 24.33 hours. Given these (probably inaccurate) calculations, your husband is actually taking one day and night from you a year. Calculate that over the number of years your relationship lasts (I’m giving you no more than five based on your question) and that is five days and nights that he owes you. Having said all of that, I think you should actually take a bit of pride in the fact that he allows you to make his coffee at all. I once went out with a man who would not let me touch his coffee-making equipment (though he was quite happy for me to touch anything else). I thought he was a barrister, but he was actually a barista, which took me a while to work out. I only discovered the truth when I asked for help for my cousin, who had committed white collar fraud. The best this man could offer was a triple macchiato with skim milk frothed into the pattern of a maple leaf. Now, regarding your dilemma, why don’t you book yourself a five-day holiday without hubby to make up for the beverage-making time difference? Load the car with a stash of Dilmah Pot Strength tea bags and drive off into the distance. You’ll feel so much better, and I reckon your long-suffering mate will be rather thrilled as well.

50 Years of Community

ON Sunday 20 August 1967, a small group from the North Arm Cove community gathered together to form what is now known as the North Arm Cove Residents Association. Fifty years on, on the afternoon of Sunday 20 August, 2017, past and present members of the North Arm Cove community will gather to celebrate 50 years of community achievement.

To mark the occasion a booklet has been compiled recording those accomplishments and the earnest efforts of past and present “Cove” volunteers. The booklet also celebrates what makes the village a special place: its history, its natural beauty and its people. Many people have contributed photos and articles to the booklet which

will be launched during the afternoon by Port Stephens MP, Kate Washington. Earlier in the afternoon the MidCoast Council Administrator, John Turner, will open a new park established opposite the Cove’s Community Centre. This work was largely funded by a Stronger Communities grant of $47,940 awarded to the Association in late 2016.

Boomerang Gathers Momentum

By Margie TIERNEY

THE Boomerang Bag movement continues to gather momentum. The volunteer group has a number of initiatives on the go and in need of community support. On Saturday 26 August they’re holding another sewing bee at the Pindimar Bundabah Community Association Hall. “We have sewers from age 18 to 80,” Julie Sims told News Of The Area. “It’s lovely to see the community come together for the cause.”

“But, as always, we are in need of more sewers to help make the bags.” “Alternatively, if anyone is interested in volunteering but can’t sew, we need people to cut fabric, or iron handles for example, all help is welcome,” Julie said. “We also need fabric donations.” “These can come in many forms, sheets, doona covers, pillow cases, curtains, tablecloths and any fabric scraps tucked away in the cupboard at home.” The Boomerang Bag group is also calling on businesses, retailers and

customers to run a Plastic Free Hour on Saturday September 23 between 10am and 11am. “We’re canvassing every outlet in Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest and those that support the event will display a sign in their window,” Julie said. Diane Burnett from BT’S For Fashion in Tea Gardens was only too happy to come on board. ‘’We have already garnered a great deal of support from local business.” “The push to rid our town of plastic bags is on.”

Bunny from the Department of Industry, David Hopper with Department of Lands, Gerard Tuckerman from MidCoast Council and Mike Baldwin and Alex Hamilton, Operations Managers with Maritime Services. “The purpose of the meeting was to initiate a course of action that will hopefully eventuate in a satisfactory outcome for all

parties,” Gordon Grainger told News Of The Area. “The visitors were shown photographic evidence that this section of the waterway was once a navigational channel, that it has been a safe mooring site for many years and that the vessel owners had contributed to Lands and Maritime over those years,” Mr Grainger said. “The site is no longer fully

TENACITY and patience appears to be paying off for the Myall River Action group. The group’s Tim Motum, Paul Bendy and Gordon Grainger recently held top level discussions over the ongoing issue of dredging the Myall River at Tea Gardens known as the ‘Gut’. MRAG met with Glenn

Maritime Services proposed suitable replacement mooring sites within a close area, quoting the eastern side of the Singing Bridge and Pindimar Bay. “This was disputed on safety issues, proximity and numbers as there are 27 vessels within the Gut,” Mr Grainger said. Council had conducted a series of approvals approximately three years ago and at that stage it was estimated a volume of 3 to 4 thousand cubic metres of soil would need to be removed at a cost of approximately $200,000. It’s now expected the cost could be up to a $1million. Mr Bunny advised the group that before he could make representation to his management, he would need methodology and a full costing, tasks that will require

the input from Lands Taree and Mid Coast Council, both of whom agreed they would undertake at the earliest convenience. “This issue has been dragging on for too long and hopefully will reach a conclusion in the near future,” Mr Grainger said. “We can only hope that Mr Tuckerman and Mr Hopper are able to conclude their undertakings in a short time and that Mr Bunny can lead us to a win-win finalisation.”

High School On Show Myall Coast primary students got a taste of high school life last week, at the Showcase Day held at Tea Gardens Public School.

By Daniel SAHYOUN

MYALL Coast primary students got a taste of high school life last week, at the Showcase Day held at Tea Gardens Public School. The annual event is

an initiative of the Myall Learning Community to help make the transition to high school a little easier for the students. Bulahdelah Central School (BCS) teacher, Ms Georgina Cunich, said the

day allowed the students to try out subjects they will be involved in during their secondary studies. “It also provided an opportunity for the students from different schools to get to know one another, which

Hands-on science experiments, unravelling the past in a history lesson and discovering the dramatics of the stage were some of the many learning experiences on offer. A lunchtime concert presented by BCS music students was another highlight, which had the young primary children dancing to the beat. Year 6 student, Charli Luxon, said her favourite

subject of the day was sport. “It was interactive so we got to mix with everyone from the other schools,” she said. “It was also good to learn from the high school students, so we could get to know them as well.” The practical activities in the Chinese language session appealed to BCS Year 6 student, Grace Kiehne. “We learnt to count to 10 in Chinese and also made a traditional lantern,” she said. “The best part was using chopsticks, it was hard, but

lots of fun.” The lessons were taught by specialist secondary teachers from BCS and highlighted some of the learning experiences the young students can look forward to. Ms Cunich said it was also a great leadership opportunity for the BCS students who helped lead the lessons. The Showcase Day is one of many transition activities held throughout the year.

Hot Seat Of Knowledge Buladelah’s Patrick Bramston had his 15 minutes of fame last week, with an appearance on the Nine Network’s Millionaire Hot Seat.

By John SAHYOUN

BULAHDELAH’S Patrick Bramston had his 15 minutes of fame last week, with an appearance on the Nine Network’s Millionaire Hot Seat. In the ‘Fastest Finger First’ preliminary round, Patrick hit the top of the leader board after

answering 12 of the 14 questions correctly in the fastest time. He also locked in the correct answer for the final question of the round, but narrowly missed the $1,000 prize after being pipped at the post by a fraction of a second. Patrick said his extensive general knowledge comes

from television. “It comes from watching documentaries and having a good memory, television is good for trivia,” he said. Wearing his Mount View Motel jacket, Patrick moved into the big money round and landed in the Hot Seat in front of host, Eddie McGuire,

after the first contestant passed on the $300 question. The question asked: “The 2017 film ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’ has what classification rating in Australia?” Under the rules of the game, Patrick was unable to pass and had to provide an

answer within 30 seconds, but bowed out after incorrectly selecting PG. Patrick said he is a fan of show and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. “I did enjoy going down to Melbourne and seeing what happens behind the scenes,” he said.

“I also got a chance to promote the town and the motel which is priceless to us.” Patrick said he applied to be a contestant on the show four years ago by filling out an online questionnaire.

Tea Gardens Veterinary Hospital will be running a pet dental month promotion throughout August to raise awareness of pet dental problems, prevention and treatment and the importance of thorough dental examinations. An initiative of the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA), the aim of the campaign titled – Healthy set, happy pet - is to educate pet owners about the benefits of annual dental health checks and the importance of a thorough dental examination to help prevent gum disease. Tea Gardens Veterinary Hospital Practice Owner Dr Karleah McCartney said that four out of five dogs and cats over the age of three years have some sort of dental disease which may go unnoticed by their owners. “Pets often won’t show pain. Even pets with sore gums, infected mouths and broken teeth will continue to eat so owners may not see any problems,” she said. So, how can you tell if your dog or cat is in the early stages of dental disease? “Your pet’s breath should not smell bad. Bad breath is a sign of infection. Gums may be red and inflamed and the teeth stained with tartar or they may start dropping food. “It’s in the best interests of your pet to have them examined and treated for dental disease while they are unconscious. This ensures they experience no pain and are not placed under unnecessary stress. It also means that owners get the best value from their pet’s oral health exam because it is thorough and investigates everything above and below the gum line. “At home, we also recommend regular tooth brushing and many cats and dogs can be trained to enjoy having their teeth brushed, especially if you start at an early age. “About 80 per cent of adult animals have some degree of dental disease, which becomes more severe with age.”

During August Tea Gardens Veterinary Hospital will be providing FREE dental consultations and 20% off a Dental Scale and Polish.

A Show Of Thanks By Daniel SAHYOUN

IT maybe the middle of winter, but the Bulahdelah Show Society Dinner Dance remains one of the hottest events on the local social calendar. Dressed in dazzling frocks and dapper suits, the guests gathered at Bulahdelah Bowling Club last weekend for a night of indulgence, cocktails and laughs. Sheree Robards worked her magic throughout the day, transforming the auditorium into a stunning banquet hall for the glamorous, formal evening. Show Society President,

Gary Gooch, said the dinner dance was held to thank their volunteers. “It is a way of not only giving back, but it is saying yes, we do appreciate what people do on the show weekend,” he said. “This is a way of coming together, relaxing and getting waited on for the night, and gives everyone a chance to socialise away from the demands of the show.” As the cocktails flowed, a fundraising auction provided plenty of entertainment, with friendships tested in the heat of the spirited bidding. Local businesses donated the items up for grabs, with

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian’s decision to abandon plans for forced mergers of more than a dozen Sydney Councils, means an end to the troubled policy. But for MidCoast residents, who were forcibly merged more than a year ago, the amalgamation will remain in place. Speaking in Parliament last week, Myall Lakes MP

Stephen Bromhead, praised “the staff of MidCoast Council for their hard work” in ensuring the council is “successful for the community”. “I also thank the community for its patience and understanding of the necessity of the merger,” Mr Bromhead stated. According to the National Party MP, the recent integration of MidCoast

Water into MidCoast Council makes it “one of the most complex merged councils in the state”. Port Stephens MP, Kate Washington, said, “The National Party is in disarray”. “On the one hand, you have Nationals Leader John Barilaro staking his leadership on cancelling regional mergers. On the other, you have Mr Bromhead bizarrely claiming council mergers were a “necessity”, Ms Washington said. “In merged council

Ms Washington told News Of The Area. “The residents should not forget that Mr Bromhead is a member of the government who imposed this dog’s breakfast of a policy. He is now effectively calling on his own government to fix inequities after the fact.” Ms Washington said the amalgamation was not a “necessity”. “It has been an undemocratic, unfair debacle,” she said.

Fight for Heat

By Margie TIERNEY

THERE is disappointment for the Myall Masters Swimming Club, having failed in its bid to secure a community grant from MidCoast Council to replace the broken solar heating at Tea Gardens Pool. “We did a lot of work to get it going, but council didn’t have the funds,” club president Chris Lock told News Of The Area. The club, however, is determined to continue its quest for the $40,000 needed to replace the solar unit. The Myall Masters has now applied for a grant through Kate Washington’s Community Building Partnerships. If that fails, they’re determined to raise the funds

even if it means calling on the community to help. Earlier this year, Rhonda Bobako secured more than 1,000 signatures on a petition to MidCoast Council calling for solar heating and maintenance work. “The good news is that last week, the black lines were repainted and the green slime removed from the pool,” Rhonda said. “It looks fantastic, like brand new,” Rhonda said. “We’re very happy that the council has provided that maintenance.” “Now we just need warm water.” The Tea Gardens Swimming Pool opens for another season on Saturday 23 September.

Muddies Season Over

By Ann SCULLY

FINAL clash for the 2017 season was played by the Myall Coast Mudcrabs against the Manning River Ratz last Saturday at Forster with the fulltime score resulting in Manning River Ratz 60, Muddies 5. Fifteen players tried their absolute best but without any substitutes, the struggle against the opposition took its toll as our side was

comfortably overrun by a stronger Ratz combination. Whilst the semifinal was played in the spirit of Rugby, it is fair to say that the Muddies struggled, at times, in the rucks, mauls and lineouts however everyone who participated deserve much praise in what, at times, was a difficult season. Our team will now focus on their Presentation Night to be held on 26 August in the Dolphin Room at the

Tea Gardens Hotel Motel then after a well deserved break, will resume fitness with some Summer Touch under the direction of the team’s new coach, Russell Gunn. New players more than welcome to join a friendly club of players and committee members who are working strongly together towards the 2018 Season.

Nominated Triples Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA

2 August It was back to winter today when 49 players ventured forth for the usual Wednesday Nominated Triples competition. It was nice to get back on the grass. It was running very true but a tad slow at about 12 seconds. Like good wine it will improve with time. Bowlers were playing for the monthly Queen’s Kitchen draw for the first time. Winning both their matches was the team of Mark Nightingale, Doug Naylor and

Merv Mills. It was great to see mark back bowling and the Club welcomed back Merv Mills from an extended holiday. There will be no bowls next Wednesday as bowlers will be saying their farewells to Kerry O’Brien. 5 August After having wonderful fields in the Fabulous Friday Open Jackpot Pairs, the turnout today was disappointing. A fierce westerly wind probably kept the fainthearted away but 12 hearty souls braved the conditions and played. Bill Moon and Ken Devlin combined to have the highest winning margin.

Vic Garlick and Col Saillard posted a good win and in the remaining game Lynda Richards combined with Bill Whalan to also have a convincing win. The jackpot, such as it is, was not won. 7 August The Sunday Mixed Bowlers probably had the pick of the weather this week and 22 players enjoyed a great morning with little wind until late into their game. There were three games of Triples and one of Pairs with the winners decided by the smallest margin. The winners were Ann Remment, (welcome Ann), Lynda Richards and Denis Wilberforce with margin of 3.

Runners-up with a margin of 5 were John Atherton, Paul Hadfield and Lon Richards. In other news; The Mixed Pairs competition this year has attracted a good field of players with at least 18 teams so far entered. This year the competition will be played over 18 ends and will be a 3-bowl format. Competition commences on Saturday 19 August. The Club has entered one team in the Three x Three Newcastle District mid-week competition commencing at the end of the month. The Selectors will be planning some trial games before the final team will be decided.

Wild Dog Control 1080 Baiting The NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) and MidCoast Council (MCC) in cooperation with local neighbours, NSW Forestry Corp and the Hunter Local Land Services will be undertaking 1080 ground baiting for wild dog control within Myall Lakes National Park, Ghin-doo-ee National Park, Bulahdelah Plain Wetland Council Reserve (Lot 601 DP1171576 Pacific Highway, Bulahdelah) and 334-ha of private conservation lands on Myall River Road and Burdekins Road, Bulahdelah. Baiting will commence on Monday 14 August 2017 and cease by Friday 29 September 2017. This baiting program is being carried out as part of a broader control program coordinated by the Hunter Local Land Services to mitigate the impacts of wild dogs on stock and wildlife. Domestic pets are not permitted in Nature Reserves, National Parks or State Conservation Areas. Neighbours and reserve users are reminded that 1080 baits are lethal to domestic pets. We suggest that pets and working dogs be restrained to ensure that they do not enter the baiting location during poisoning operations or to muzzle dogs if they are required to work the baiting location during and after poisoning. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance. No baits will be placed within 150 metres of residences. All areas will have 1080 baiting signs erected at access points to where baiting is being undertaken. For further information please contact NPWS Great Lakes Area office on (02) 6591 0300, Mid Coast Council on (02) 6591 7222 or the Hunter Local Land Services on 1300 795 299. c

Many people dream of living an environmentally sustainable life with their own produce available at their back door.

By Helen WATKINS

MANY people dream of living an environmentally sustainable life with their own produce available at their back door. The Thursday Walkers are welcomed annually to Kore farm to have a glimpse at what this sort of life might entail. It is a fascinating insight into the depth of knowledge, skill and determination required. We walked into Kore Farm from the main road and again I had to have a laugh at the manner in which we cross the creek. Could this be a reflection of our attitude to life in general? Are you one who strides across first, certain that you know the correct route? Do you survey the path ahead looking for the best way or wait for someone else to cross successfully so that you might follow in their

footsteps? My main concern is always that I get across with dry feet. I won’t reflect on what that has to say about my attitude to life. Helmut welcomed us to his home with a delicious morning tea and a sample of some of his excellent produce. We then toured the farm and hopefully took away with us some of his knowledge and enthusiasm for this way of life and how to eat according to the seasons. We were able to sample some of his delicious citrus and learn about different types. I’m not too sure about the variety of ancient apple we sampled, despite its delicious aroma. Thank you again Helmut for your hospitality and generosity. Kore Farm produce is available for purchase at the Myall Quays market.
