Speaking to media last week, Mr Embry said he will be focusing on the delivery of projects during his tenure. “I need to continue the current work that the Council is doing and deliver the key projects across the community,” he said. “I will be working with the Council on the delivery of those and ensure that we stay on track.” The motion to appoint Mr Embry was moved by Cr Len Roberts and seconded by Cr Karen Hutchinson. Aussie Day Breakfast WHEN last Friday dawned fine and sunny, it put a smile on the face of Lioness President Linda Allen. Australia Day celebrations were off to a great start and all the hard work by the Lionesses and Lions Club of the Myall Coast was about to pay off at the Moira Parade Park in Hawks Nest. The organisers were up at dawn, setting up for the throngs of Aussies hankering for a sausage sizzle or lamington at the breakfast celebration. “We’ll go through 30 kilos of sausages, 30 kilos of bacon,” Linda Allen told News Of The Area. And while the band played lots of Aussie favourites, the crowds kept coming, patiently waiting for their feed of Australia Day fare. Traditionally it’s a time to pay tribute to those within the Myall Community who make a difference. And it was with great
pleasure that Linda announced Jomeca Lafaialii Lioness Junior Citizen of 2018. Jomeca volunteers extensively across the community, has been involved since school days with the Red Cross and Peter Sinclair Gardens and regularly attends the PCYC where she is currently in the process of getting qualified as a boxing trainer and instructor. The other major announcement was the Lioness Citizen for 2018 and the look on the face of Gordon Grainger was one of sheer surprise when he was called on to accept the honour. “I was going to go home a little while ago, but my wife Trish said let’s just stay for a bit longer,” Gordon said. “I’m very touched and honoured to receive this award.” Gordon Grainger works tirelessly within the community, from organising river clean up days as a member of the Myall River Action Group to being a strong advocate and member of the Estuary Committee,

WITH the summer holiday at an end, hundreds of Myall Coast students will head back to classrooms this week for another year of learning and fun. For Kindergarten children, a wave goodbye on the first day may bring a tear to their parent’s eyes, while for others, starting high school is a big milestone and a reminder of how quickly time goes. Amia Murphy, who is amongst the cohort of 55 students starting Year 7 at Bulahdelah Central School, said she is looking forward to the new experiences. “I can’t wait to make new friends and try out all the different subjects,” she said. “I am also a little bit nervous because there will be many
changes, but there will be lots of people to help us out.” Year 7 Advisor, Ms Linda Drenkhahn, said last year’s Orientation Day provided students with the basics to begin with confidence. “It was an opportunity for students to meet their teachers and classmates and become familiar with the school grounds and routines,” she said. “We are certainly looking forward to working with the students and their parents throughout the year.” As the leap to high school can be both an exciting and daunting time, Ms Drenkhahn said it is understandable that some students may be feeling a little anxious. “Bulahdelah is a friendly country school and there is

Your will is an extremely important document and governs what happens to your assets upon your death. Estate planning, and particularly drafting and interpreting wills, is a complex area of law. Although this is so, people commonly think it is straight forward.
You have spent a lifetime accumulating your wealth and transferring that wealth to the next generation is not necessarily easy. Even in simple family circumstances and with relatively straight forward assets, we often see problems created by self-drafted or selfamended wills. Obtaining estate planning advice and having your will professionally drafted is of great importance. For those who have gone to the effort and expense of doing so in the past, it can be tempting to make small changes
to the will by hand afterward. There are however numerous rules which govern whether a will is validly amended and often these rules are not followed when people amend their wills themselves. Amending your will yourself can make it difficult for your executor to administer your estate. The amendments you make may not be effective or may have an unintended effect. It may also increase the chances of a dispute arising about the terms of your will or increase the likelihood of a family provision claim being made.
People are often looking to save on the cost of obtaining advice from a lawyer when amending wills themselves. In reality they are often creating the need for additional work to be done after their death and it costs significantly more in the long run.

Dear Jasminda,
I live on a battle-axe block and my neighbour drives his truck too fast up the gravel road past my house which spreads dust all over my vehicle and the exterior of my home. What can I do?
Return and Burn Dear News Of The Area,
I LIVE in Hawks Nest which does not have a Return and Earn collection point, the closest is location in Medowie some 53km away. I have been encouraging my children to collect bottles as a form of pocket money however following my first experience I have come to the conclusion I cannot afford to travel the distance to collect the money which is rightfully mine.
Doing the sums my car uses 9.4ltr per 100km, given the return trip is 106km and fuel currently is $1.33ltr the cost to drive to Medowie and back cost around $12.50 (rounding down). So looking that these figures we need to collect 125 bottles just to pay for the fuel. 125 bottles is just over 5 cartons of beers. So by the time I place 5 cartons in my boot and the kids in the car there is very little room for much else.
Mr LA, Medowie
OPINION
So off I go, exchange the 125 bottle and give the kids the money, I am now out of pocket $12.50, given I got the $12.50 back for the fuel used but I haven’t got the $12.50 back I paid in the first place. So I’m out of pocket $12.50. Where is the incentive to Return and Earn. Thanks and God help the environment. Stephen Watson Hawks Nest
Koala Highway Rescue By Margie TIERNEY
NO person in their right mind normally tries to cross the Pacific Highway on foot, but somehow one very brave little koala found herself stuck halfway last week. The female koala ended up on the medium strip near the Viney Creek Road turnoff, and one equally brave human soul stopped to rescue her. The koala was fortunate on this front as well, because her rescuer, who is believed to have been a woman, took her to Port Stephens Koalas
at Nelson Bay to be nursed site, which was found by Noel back to health. Swain who took delight in Luckily the koala only watching her climb high into suffered minor injuries and a Swamp Mahogany Tree, was fully recovered within needless to say well away from the dangers of the highway. days. Jill Madden, President of the Myall Koala and Environment Group told News Of The Area, “The Koala was about four years old and was in beautiful condition when released.” “Full credit goes to the koala carers at the Port Stephens Group.” q KOALA RELEASE: Noel What was needed Swain releases rescued koala. then was a safe release
Dear Mr LA, THIS is just another example of a whole list of issues that fall under the category of ‘Ignorant Sod of a Neighbour’. He is probably just chilling out, listening to some lunatic on talk back radio or he’s singing along to the 80s hour, and he thinks he is on a freeway instead of a sleepy semi-rural road that shares a boundary with your freshly washed SUV, your glistening windows, and your sugar-soaped walls. You can try the diplomatic path and approach him. Just say, “Hey mate, I was just wondering if you had noticed the dust bowl you create when you drive 60km per hour down our shared driveway? You probably didn’t. I’d really appreciate it if you slowed down a bit.” That may not work. You may need to get a bit passive aggressive. “Hey, buddy, the whole concept of neighbours revolves around being neighbourly. I considerately deliver your mail when it gets placed in the wrong letter box, and I considerately dodge your dog when it sits in the middle of my driveway. All you need to do is follow my lead and slow down. Thanks.” If he’s as dumb as a hammer, you probably need to implement some road blocks. Maybe make a speed hump so he gets airborne. Some solar-powered fake cop lights? That should clarify your message. Or erect a sign that says, ‘Drive like your kids live here’ or maybe ‘Slow down, adults at play’. That should really freak him out. I hope these suggestions work, Mr LA. Carpe diem, Jasminda

Immortality on Offer Karuah RSL Bowling Club By Trevor DAVIES IT’S not equal to being one of the “Australians of the Year”. It’s not as good as receiving a “New Year Honour”, nor as good as being elected to a “Sporting Hall of Fame”. But. Eight members of Karuah RSL Bowls Club this last weekend vied for an “immortality” almost as good by competing in the final of the club fours 2018 Club Championship. Victory would mean a whole year as champions, as well as having their names painted up on the wall on the club’s honour boards forevermore. The contenders were the defending champions, Gordon Latimore’s team of John French, Sam Rees, and Peter Dennis, tried and true, attempting to win the comp for the 3rd year in a row. The challengers were
Greg Pearson’s team of Dennis Ashbridge, Leigh Hunter and John Bilby, newer club members attempting to cement their reputations. What a day, what a competition. A large and knowledgeable crowd gathered on the verandah at the RSL Club Sunday afternoon with the best vantage points taken early. A hush of expectation descended as the umpire tossed the coin and this almost immediately changed to applause as the very high standard bowling got under way. This final was the game the whole club had all been waiting for! After a very tight first 6 ends both teams were dead even, then after 2 big ends and some very tight others Gordon’s team drew well ahead to lead 14 - 6 after 11 ends.
But hold on to your hats. Absurdly skilled bowling by players in all 4/8 positions saw a comeback to 14 - 12 after 15 ends and then 16 - 14 after 17 ends! Absolutely unbelievable bowling saw the jack moved 3 or 4 times every end with the holder of shot changing almost as much. Last end Gordon’s side held the lead by 3 but Greg’s side fought

back to be in a position to get 4 before Gordon finally dashed their hopes by picking up the jack with a precision bowl that took the jack and competition away! What a game - played in the absolute best spirit in front of an appreciative verandah of spectators astounded by the skills on display! Well done to Greg, Dennis, Leigh and John, a great display of team bowling. Congratulations to Gordon, John, Sam and Pete. You have proved that 3 in a row is possible if your good enough. Well done Karuah RSL Bowls Club, the future of both home grown bowlers and those bowlers who choose to come and join our great club looks very bright!
A PLEASANT boating trip in Port Stephens on Sunday, 21 January turned sour for local boat owner, Scott Symonds. On return to his mooring in Tea Gardens, he noticed the bilge pumps were running constantly on his vessel, Palamuna. On investigation, he found a major leak beyond the capacity of the pumps. Palamuna is a beautiful, old AG Williams vessel designed and built in 1962, made of Canadian oregon. It is an excellent example of a classic wooden boat that would present well at any wooden boat festival. On assessing the gravity of the situation, Scott immediately contacted other members of the Tea Gardens Slipway Association for their assistance in getting his vessel on the slipway and out of the river. However, there was another problem that confronted Scott - the slipway was already occupied by another vessel. Members of the slipway committee saw to the hasty removal of the other

groundwater source. Both river and groundwater levels, along with water consumption, are constantly monitored as part of MidCoast Water Services’ management of water supplies. The current hot dry weather impacts on water supplies in two ways - the lack of rain means source supplies are not replenished and the heat often results in higher water use than usual, according to Director of Water Services, Brendan Guiney. The Manning scheme, which supplies customers from Crowdy Head in the north to Tarbuck Bay in the south and west to Krambach, relies on storage in Bootawa Dam and flows in the Manning River. “With flows in the
q C Grade winner Kevin Durham. Manning River decreasing from an average of 4,000 – 5,000 million litres per day, to around 30 million litres per day, we are carefully watching the forecasts” says Brendan Guiney. “While pumping has stopped at Stroud due to the very low river levels, the offriver storage is being utilised and there is over 100 days of water available in storage. “We do ask everyone to be mindful of their water use over the coming weeks by taking part in our voluntary summer water saving program” Mr Guiney added. The key message is ‘don’t spray in the middle of the day’ - reduce your outdoor water use between the hours of 9am and 4pm. vessel to allow the damaged Palamuna to be slipped on Tea Gardens’ community slipway. Because of the low tide, it took some hours before Palamuna was winched clear of the Myall River, the operation concluding at 11 pm Sunday night. This highlights the necessity and advantage of maintaining a fully functional slipway in Tea Gardens. Scott said, “Even if I was able to arrange emergency slipping in Nelson Bay, I very much doubt that I could have completed the passage.” If it was not for the remarkable response of Tea Gardens Slipway members, the outcome could have been much worse considering the vessel carries over 800 litres of diesel. It is worth noting that the Tea Gardens Slipway Association is planning major works to further enhance its environmental compliance and a development application has been lodged with MidCoast Council for this work.

MidCoast Water: Restrictions could occur MIDCOAST Water Services says while temperatures continue to exceed 30°C and river levels are dropping, the community’s responsible use of water means there will be no introduction of water restrictions just yet. However, restrictions may be necessary if the hot dry spell continues beyond next week or if water usage increases. MidCoast Water operates five water supply systems across the region covering the Manning, Great Lakes, Bulahdelah, Stroud, Gloucester and Tea Gardens areas. All supplies are dependent on local rivers except for the Tea Gardens supply which is a

Club Minor Singles Championship BOWLING Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA 24 JANUARY: The long hot summer continued today with a stiff sea breeze keeping conditions bearable. Nominated Fours competitions continued with 47 starters competing. Three teams completed the double winning both their matches but Danny Johnson’s team, which included Bruce
Everitt, Tony Coomer and Col Fossey, took home the money. 27 January: The first round of the Club Minor Singles was played today with a good field of 20 bowlers Taking part A very interesting competition this year with some good up and coming bowlers playing for the first time as well as a few “seasoned” players chasing this sought after trophy. With the temperature in the low 30’s a brisk northeasterly made conditions tricky.
The results were as follows; Stewart Sturrock 31, Vic Garlick 21. Col Saillard 31, Henry Dallas 12. Merv Mills 31, Graeme Watkins 5. David Perry 31, Tony Coomer 21. Danny Johnson 31, Noel Jackson 24. Doug Andrews enjoyed a forfeit and Gary Wynne had a bye. 28 January: The second round of the Club Minor Singles was played today with some unpredictable results. Dennis Wilberforce hit a rut when reaching 12 points and remained there for 9 ends. Ken Devlin, his opponent, taking the match 31-14. Ross Barry outgunned Graham Kelly 31-10. Neil Kibble piled on too
Club Championship Fours 2018 BOWLING
Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club By Lynda RICHARDS TUESDAY 23rd January: Round2/Semi Finals of the Club Championship Fours was played. What a wonderful display of bowling by all participants. Play on Rink 1 was a very close contest. Sandra Leisemann, Robyn Webster, Deyonne Page and Pat Baker had a lead of 4 shots on the 14th end against Robyn Beaumont, Julie Kennedy, Karen McPhie and Maynie Roberts. Maynie’s team delivered some great shots equalising the score on the 17th end and ultimately claiming victory 18 v 14. Rink 3 Sheril Johnson, Jill McBride, Wendy Jones and Olive McKeown started strongly but just didn’t “last the distance” loosing to Bette Saillard, Bev Stephens, Lynne Green and Lorraine Harvey 15 v 25. Format for social bowls was a game of Triples and a game of Pairs. The winners on the day were Francis Betar and Dorothy Thompson. Thursday 25th January: No social bowls played, the hot weather deterring
most bowlers. The final of the Fours Competition went ahead as scheduled and what a thrilling game of bowls this was. Bette Saillard, Bev Stephens, Lynne Green and Lorraine Harvey v Robyn Beaumont, Julie Kennedy, Karen McPhie and Maynie Roberts. Lorraine’s team holding the lead 6 v 0 on the 3rd end, 7th end just 1 shot difference between the scores. On the 13th end they had increased the winning margin by 8 shots. Maynie’s team attempted a come back narrowing Lorraine’s lead to just 3 shots on the 18th end. With 3 ends left to play I guess Lorraine’s side could sense victory was close at hand especially after winning the next 2 ends and adding 4 to their tally. Maynie’s team won the final end, scoring 3 shots but this wasn’t enough for them to win the game.
Final score 21 v 17. Thanks to Controlling Body Karen Green and Umpire Francis Betar and also to Dale Winter for preparing lunch. Congratulations to Robyn Beaumont who bowled with the Newcastle District Team on the 20th and 21st January at Lambton Park. Newcastle District defeated the team from the ACT. Pennant Season commences on Tuesday 30th January good bowling to our 4 teams competing in this competition. Hopefully 2018 will see our club bringing home a Pennant Flag. Social bowls will still be played during this time. Sunday bowls as usual open to all,” new and old bowlers”. Names to be submitted by 0900 play starts 1000, $12 for a game of bowls and BBQ lunch. A fun way to start you day.

Danny Johnson will have to wait another year to contest this title as Col Saiilard, playing some brilliant draw bowls was too consistent over 34 ends to win 31-25. Fish Run Riot www.newsofthearea.com.au
By Geoff WALKER
PEOPLE love fishing reports. That’s why we regularly cruise by the fish cleaning table at Lemon Tree Passage in Henderson Park with the hope of getting a story. It’s not easy winkling the good oil out of fisher folk as some of them jealously guard their ‘secret spots’. Some even refuse to tell us the bait they use. Others give out false leads to keep wannabes away from their hot spots. Not so local legend Adam Parbera who has been scoring big time with both fish and crabs. While collecting yellowtail bait (yakkas) in the white water around Tomaree Headland the kingfish came on and he and his two mates had their 15 fish quota in record time. They weighed in at up to 8kg each. The intrepid trio returned at night to the same spot to clean up big time on the snapper. These were running riot and Adam’s largest topped the scales at 9kg. That’s not all. He reefed in a thumping 32kg jew from a hole near North Arm Cove. Why waste the fish frames? Most anglers feed them to the pelicans but Adam recycled some through his crab pots and nailed some monster muddies at Karuah. So, dear reader, there you have it! Why hide in your air-con cave this summer watching the cricket and guzzling endless cans? Set the alarm clock for 3am. Hit the water and before you know it you’ll be back home with a boat load. If Adam can do it, so can you!
