Ambulance Station home to happy chooks By Margie TIERNEY YOU may be surprised to learn that chickens have come home to roost at the Tea Gardens Ambulance Station. Long time local Paramedic Peter Turpin takes up the story. “We had chooks for a couple of years, and they were getting out, so when we got a new Manager he was only too happy for us to build a coop,” Peter said. Peter and fellow Paramedic Steve Wilson got to work and the result was a very impressive coop for their chooks to call home. “We’ve got five chooks, they are about six months old and totally spoilt.”

“We get a dozen eggs a day which keeps us well fed,” Peter said. “We pay for our eggs which goes toward keeping them happy and fed.” What was lacking was a name for each chook, so Peter came up with the idea of having the students at Tea Gardens Primary School engaged in creating a list of suitable monikers. A dozen or so names were shortlisted, then a group of students representing each year, got to visit the

Ambulance Station for a meet and greet. In the end a show of hands decided on the names, Hens Solo, Popcorn, Nugget, Schnitty and Gypsy. Mrs Pecker, Ambo Chick and Chooky McChookface unfortunately missed the cut. The visit not only provided the youngsters with a hands on chook experience, but a lesson about some do’s and don’ts around what animals and wildlife are no go zones and some brochures on safety first.

the past couple of weeks. A spokesman for the Rural Fire Service told News Of The Area, “This is all part of ensuring bushfire prevention for the Palm Lake Resort.” The clearing work, which runs for nearly a kilometre, has been watched over by an ecologist who came to the rescue of a young kookaburra family. “Three young kookaburras, nearly fledged, were accidentally knocked from their hollow when a tree nearby was pushed over and collected the side of their tree as it came down,” Conservationist, Jill Madden said. “One managed to remain in the damaged hollow as the other two fluttered awkwardly to the ground.”

AS we head into peak beach season and the Christmas holiday period, MidCoast Council would like to remind locals and holiday makers that a 2018/19 Beach Vehicle Access Permit is required to drive on the beach. The MidCoast region includes more than 190 kilometres of pristine coastline and four wheel driving enthusiasts have always been attracted to the area. “Some of our beaches offer a great opportunity for four wheel drivers to get off the beaten track, and so long as people do the right thing by following a few simple rules, we welcome locals and visitors to take advantage of our stunning coastline,” MidCoast Council Director Community Spaces and Services, Paul De Szell said. Obtaining a beach vehicle permit not only gives entry to a range of beautiful, less crowded beaches across the region, but it also comes with a responsibility to comply with beach rules which are enforced by Council Rangers and the NSW Police Force. It is important to know which beaches and access points can be used and to keep an eye out for any beach closures. All permit fees contribute to maintaining beach access points, dune rehabilitation and weed control. The maximum beach speed limit on the beach is 40km/h, with pedestrians always having right of way, and vehicles must stay at least 15 metres away from pedestrians. Vehicles must also drive between the tide marks, which means remaining below the high tide mark and above the low tide mark. Annual permits are valid from July 1 through to June 30 and must be clearly displayed on the bottom passenger side of a vehicle’s windscreen. For short-stay visitors and locals who require a short-term permit, a 30-day permit is available across the entire region. “Part of your responsibility as a permit holder is to help us protect our local flora and fauna by sharing the shore,” Paul explained. “Our beaches are home to a number of endangered shorebird species like the Little Tern, and while we aim to fence off and place signage around nesting sites, vehicles can

With 12 years as Musical Director of “Carols in The Domain”, an International Telecast on the Seven Network, it was Michael Harvey’s vision, to bring this concept to Tea Gardens with the help of his Committee, Creative Team & Crew. “For some years I have believed we needed to bring ‘ The Magic of Christmas ‘ to our Community for children and families to come together and enjoy the real meaning of Christmas,” Michael Harvey said. The audience agreed, concert goers chorusing tributes, “A fabulous evening enjoyed by young and old, with joy, happiness and a few tears.” All proceeds from the Myall Coast Community Carols are going to the Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club.

LOCAL environment members celebrated a very successful year recently with a pizza party on the Myall River waterfront. Twenty-five members of the Myall Koala and Environment Group enjoyed pizzas from the Myall River Bakery on a cool and windy evening. President Jill Madden shared a few important highlights of the year, beginning with updating their 30-year-old Constitution and registration as an Australian Charity. MidCoast Council has approved the street tree planting plan, a strategy to replace the koala tree corridor after the 10/50 Rule resulted in hundreds of trees being removed. MCC is also assisting with supplying the landscaper mulch and watering the trees. Twenty koala food trees, E. Parramattensis, were successfully planted in Swan Bay and 12 new koala food trees were planted along John Davis Walk in Sanderling Avenue. These are now growing well after vandals twice pulled them out. The annual Easter stall of bric-a-brac, cakes and raffles was a success in Hawks Nest and at the Myall River Festival they gave away 800 koala food trees for planting in the local area.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from readers throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,

My daughter’s boyfriend bought her a skydiving voucher for Christmas. I don’t actually want her to go skydiving as I think it is dangerous. He can’t get a refund. What should I do? A five-day survey took place in September 2018, led by a team of experienced ecologists looking into koala habitat and koalas on eighty private properties in and around Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest. This confirmed koala habitat along three corridors leading into the two towns, north from the Myall Lakes National Park, northwest from Shearwater/Viney Creek/Monkey Jacket and west from Pindimar/Bundabah. The survey found ten koalas, including females in all locations, meaning these

were breeding habitats, not just movement corridors. Scientists from Sydney University are interested in researching the koalas’ genetic makeup, disease status and movement patterns. Jill Madden said this information would be used to ensure that koalas in the Myall Coast region could continue to live, move and breed successfully so future generations can enjoy seeing a koala in the wild. Next year the senior ecologists will be presenting the results at a public meeting about koala ecology, previous conservation work and this survey plus where the current project could lead. The date has yet to be finalised. Follow this project on Facebook Myall Coast Koala Corridor Project.

Mrs KM, Anna Bay Dear Mrs KM, AH, YOUNG love. Isn’t it grand. Love makes you giddy. Love leads you make Internet transactions that aren’t refundable. Love makes you forget to read the small print. It seems this gallant suitor wants to sweep your daughter off her feet, make her head over heels, lift her to the highest heights, raise her up, up, up in a small plane to 15,000 feet and then let her freefall at over 200km an hour, which is the ultimate fate of most young love. You’ve got to give him kudos for trying, Mrs KM. I mean he could have taken the soft option and bought her a vanilla-scented candle, or a matching tattoo, or perhaps some inappropriate underwear, but no, this young man has saved for weeks in order to offer your daughter an adrenalin-charged, unforgettable experience. Never again will her heart race as it has with him (well, actually, not with him, with the instructor she’s strapped to, somewhat defeating the purpose). But still, he’s gone the extra mile, and that deserves credit. If it makes you feel better, statistically, she is far safer jumping out of a plane than driving along Nelson Bay Road. Even better, she is far more likely to be proposed to in a hot-air balloon than a skydive. Just tell her to make sure he jumps first, then there’s still time to chicken out if she gets cold feet. Carpe diem. Jasminda.

Christmas Raffle helps our Farmers By Margie TIERNEY OUR drought stricken farmers are once again on the receiving end of some financial help from the Myall community. $700 raised by the Myall Art and Craft Centre’s Christmas Raffle is heading to the Country Women’s Association. “Our lovely Christmas hamper is put together every year by member Annette Naylor,” Janette Coppock told News Of The Area. The raffle was won by a very happy Peter Webb. “The Committee would like to thank all members and members of the community who purchased tickets, it was a great response,” Janette said. Just a reminder, that the Centre is celebrating its 25th anniversary of the Art Group with an Art and Craft Show, being held over three days from Friday 11 January through to Sunday 13 January. A group of very keen and talented artists come together every Monday from 9am to 12 at the Craft Centre.

“They always welcome new members to their group, and offer encouragement and advice to those who have always wanted to learn, but haven’t had the opportunity,” Janette said. “The fun, laughter and friendships formed are a bonus!” “Annual membership of the Craft Centre is $50, which gives you access to all the Craft groups held at the Centre.”

q

Janette added, “At a cost of $5 for your first class of the week, say the Art group on a Monday, you can then attend a different group each day, at no extra cost.” “It could be spinning and weaving or wood turning on Tuesday; sewing or picture framing on Wednesday, leather work or braided rug making on Thursday; printmaking or mosaics on Friday, to name just a few.” The Myall Art and Craft Centre is located behind the Visitors Information Centre, at the Singing Bridge end of Myall Street in Tea Gardens.

CHRISTMAS HAMPER WINNER: Peter Webb.

q GRANDPARENT OF THE YEAR: Ms Kate Washington MP, Ron Sunderland with granddaughters Sari and Eve.

Grandparent of the Year By Margie TIERNEY

NO-ONE was more surprised than Tea Gardens local Ron Sunderland when he found out that he was the recipient of this year’s Port Stephens Local Grandparent of the Year Award. “There was a surprise family party at the Country Club, I didn’t know about it and I walked in thinking I was just going to dinner and all the family, all the Grandchildren, everyone was there,” Ron said. But there was more in store for Ron. Port Stephens MP Kate Washington joined a large gathering of Ron’s family and friends at the official ceremony held at the Tea

Gardens Library. “It is fitting for the Port Stephens Local Grandparent of the Year to come from Tea Gardens, which is recognised as having the highest median age of any suburb in Australia,” Ms Washington said. “Ron is a shining example of the benefits of an engaged and active community.” Ron was nominated by his friend David Brailey for his efforts in establishing a local Granddads4Grandkids (G4G) group in Tea Gardens to support local Grandfathers to connect with their Grandchildren. to support stronger relationships with their Grandchildren. He’s also been a regular volunteer at the Tea Gardens Library for the past decade where he has played an important role in supporting seniors in the use of computers and other technology as well as developing a website for the Myall Coast Toy Library. At the ceremony, a humble Ron Sunderland said he owed the Award to his family, wife Jan, his own children and five Grandchildren. As for his Grandchildren, they spoke in one voice about their Granddad, “ He always buys us ice-cream, it’s one of the favourite things we do when we come to visit.”

For Keira By Margie TIERNEY

HAWKS NEST State Champion athlete Keira McGregor is enjoying a well earned rest after another weekend filled with gold medal winning performances. Two days of competition started with 12 year old Keira breaking the records for both the 100 metre and long jump as well as winning the 800 metre and hurdles at Little Athletics in Raymond Terrace. Then it was off to the Hunter Athletic stadium to compete in another six events in the Shield Competition.

“She won four gold medals in the 100m, 200m, long jump and hurdles, bettering her personal bests in some events,” proud dad John McGregor said. “She rounded all this off competing in non regular events with a silver in the shot put and a bronze in the javelin.” Keira told News Of The Area, “It was a tough weekend with 2 competitions and 11 individual events in total, but I enjoy the challenges to help improve my performances for future big competitions.” The Medowie Christian Schoolgirl is having some down time ahead of training

for regionals early in the new year. This weekend Keira had her normal Little Athletics competition at Raymond Terrace on Saturday, followed by the Macquarie Hunter Shield comp on Sunday. To start the weekend on the right note Keira broke the Raymond Terrace Club records for both the 100m and the long jump with very good time and distance, as well as winning the 800m and hurdles. On Sunday at Hunter Athletic stadium she competed in 6 events in the Shield competition during the day.

q ELEVEN EVENTS: Keira McGregor with six medals including four gold.
