Celebrating Easter CHOCOLATE eggs, hot cross buns and church services are a few of the many Easter traditions that will be enjoyed around the region this weekend. For six-year-old Abbiegail Ray, the special time of year is all about the Easter Bunny and spending time with family. “We visit my Nan and we always have an Easter egg hunt,” she said. “We go searching together and find lots of eggs, I like sharing them with my family for breakfast, lunch and dinner.” Sister Libbey Byrne from the Myall Coast Catholic Parish said Easter eggs are used to symbolise the beginning of new life. “For Christians, it is

Jan continued to play after Cec passe, and kept this up well into her early nineties. She loved her Bowls and made many friends over the years, as well as lots of trophies. Jan also took up China Painting and loved her painting classes with Jan Winn and friends. Over the years all her family and friends cupboards overflowed with cherished pieces. Jan is also well known for her cooking, especially her apple pies and everyone was always welcome to call in for a cuppa. She continued to live in her own home until the age of 99 years which is a great cacomplishment. Jan now resides at Peter Sinclair Gardens. On the 19 March, she again celebrated her 100th Birthday with another cake and celebrations. She certainly has had a wonderful 100 years.

AFTER years in the planning, the members of the Hawks Nest Bridge Club celebrated the official opening of their new Club House in great style last Friday. The rainy day didn’t deter more than a 150 members and supporters from attending the opening of the new building located in the old car park in Yamba Street. MidCoast Councillor Len Roberts gave an informative Welcome to Country speech followed by Bridge Club President Glenn Conroy who spoke of the many people involved in turning the dream of a purpose-built clubhouse, into a reality. Other guests including Federal Member for Lyne, Dr David Gillespie who told News Of The Area, “It’s a wonderful building and club, and a wonderful achievement.” “Bridge is such a good thing, in Australia’s oldest community, an activity like this keeps people mentally young and active.” “It’s also good at preventing early signs of dementia, so go play

Bridge,’’ encouraged Dr Gillespie. Other dignitaries in attendance included, Catherine Cusack MLC, Parliamentary Secretary for Digital Inclusion who represented the Premier of NSW, MidCoast Mayor David West, Bruce Neill, President of the Australian Bridge Federation and former Governor, Rear Admiral Peter Sinclair. Port Stephens MP Kate Washington said, “I am in awe of the Bridge Club, in awe of their tenacity and fundraising efforts, and then to have the vision and have them pull it all together is incredible.” Bridge Club President Glenn Conroy would also like the building to be used by other community groups. “We’re in talks with the U3A, we’ve got great acoustics and av equipment and reasonable hourly rates.” More than $350,000 was raised through grants, donations and loans to build the clubhouse on land provided by MidCoast Council. If you’re interested in using the space for your community activity, call Charlie Shuetrim on 0416 215 251.

Most family law matters resolve by agreement. Former spouses/ partners realise that there is much to be gained from ‘determining their own destiny’ instead of leaving such major decisions as parenting arrangements for their children, or division of their assets to a Judge; someone who does not know them or their children. However, once the Terms of Settlement are signed, and the Judge formally makes the Order, is that the end? Usually – yes. Always – no.
One such example was considered by the Full Court of the Family Court in the matter of Darley & Darley [2016]. In that case the parents decided to end their litigation and agree to parenting orders for their children. After the Orders
were made, the mother (having a change of heart) appealed the Orders claiming that the Judge had placed undue duress and influence on the parties to settle, and had not appropriately addressed certain evidence.
The Full Court confirmed that Orders made by consent are open to be appealed; however the basis on which they can be appealed is much narrower. Here, the Full Court dismissed the arguments relating to the treatment of the evidence, as the Judge had not adjudicated the evidence, instead accepting the parties’ request to make the Orders by consent. As to the allegation of duress / influence, the Full Court determined that any encouragement by a Judge for parties to explore settlement is in line with the contemplation of the Family Law Act, and is consistent with the Judge’s duties.

Days of Deluge IN just three days, more than 300 millimetres of rain fell across the Markwell Valley last week, resulting in flash flooding and roads being cut. The heaviest falls were recorded at Cabbage Tree Mountain, where 217 millimetres of rain fell in the 24 hours to 9am on 22 March, a new record for the site which began operating in 2002. On the same day, Bulahdelah picked up 99 millimetres of rainfall and Crawford River was soaked with 103 millimetres. The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) said the deluge was due to a low-pressure trough which moved slowly along the NSW Coast, bringing storms and persistent rain to the local region. “Many locations saw close to their monthly March rainfall fall last week,” they said. Property owners welcomed the downpour which filled their empty tanks. But as dusty paddocks
were replaced with water views, many low-lying bridges and causeways became impassable. The BoM said a lengthy spell of dry weather had left river catchments dry, meaning the water drained fairly quickly resulting in only minor flooding. Data collected by the BoM shows the Myall River peaked just below six metres at Markwell in the early hours of last Thursday morning and three metres at Bulahdelah, which was just below the
minor flood level. The Karuah River at Booral also swelled, peaking at six metres. With water swamping bridges, the SES issued a timely reminder, advising residents to avoid entering floodwaters. “If a road is closed due to flooding, it’s not worth the risk,” they said. According to the BoM, the average March rainfall for Bulahdelah is 161 millimetres and 139 millimetres at Crawford River.

Dear Jasminda,
Stroud Works Done WORK is now complete on the redevelopment of Holstein Poultry Pavilion at Stroud Showground. The works are part of over $1.1-million in redevelopment at the Showground and come just in time ahead of the Stroud Show in the first week of April. Over $100,000 in funding was committed by the Federal Coalition Government towards the upgrade of facilities at Stroud Showground, in addition to more than $1-million in Federal and State Government disaster relief funding for the Stroud Showground announced by the Australian and NSW Governments. “During the election campaign I met with members of the Stroud Showground
Committee to discuss the disaster relief submission. Separate to this submission, I announced that a re-elected Coalition Government would provide $100,000 in Federal funding to undertake further work at the showground including a rebuild of the poultry pavilion and I am delighted that work has now been completed.” The $1 million in disaster funding to support the restoration of Stroud Showground was allocated following the extensive damage caused by a major weather event in April 2015. Dr Gillespie said over 80 local community groups utilise Stroud Showground.

I think my 17-year-old dog is telling me ‘it’s time’ but I don’t know how to let her go. How can I make this impossible decision? Mrs LV, Medowie Dear Mrs LV,
DOGS communicate in lots of subtle and not-so-subtle ways, as I’m sure you know. When they rip a hole in your new leather lounge, they are actually saying, “You know, I’m feeling a little bit disgruntled with the way you leave me at home all day, on my own, and you somehow think leaving the television going will make me think that you are still home. Well, I’m not quite that stupid.” When they bring a furry and now unidentifiable creature to your doorstep, they are saying, “Sorry, for a moment there I actually thought I was a cat; I thought I was a feral cat, but now I remember I am a placid dog and I should just wait until 6.00pm when you serve me my kibble and mince.” As dogs age, they slowly stop doing many of the things they used to do: making their own doggie doors in the flyscreen, jumping up on the legs of unsuspecting visitors, burying your old socks in the compost heap, salivating under the table as you try to enjoy dinner, and so on. Instead, they take on mannerisms that match their age. They stare vacantly at open pastures, they sleep all day, they get stressed and start ‘sundowning’ at night, they lose their appetite, they hobble, they have more difficulty breathing and some even start slowly removing themselves from the family. With all these signs they are trying to say, “I still love you, but I’m really struggling, and if I could talk I would ask you to start considering whether I have the quality of life that I should have, or whether you are holding on for your benefit and not mine.” Only you and your vet can make the ultimate decision, but I hope this has, in some small way, helped. Jetski Invasion By Margie TIERNEY
THE tom toms were pounding across Tea Gardens last week when a flotilla of jet skis came ashore on the banks of Marine Drive in Anzac Park. But it wasn’t an invasion, simply a lunch stop for 115 riders taking part in the Variety Club’s annual Jet Trek. The Yamaha Variety Jet Trek is held each year to raise funds to empower children
who are sick, disadvantaged or who have special needs to live, laugh and learn. But the Trek is not for the faint-hearted. The riders were on day two of a 600 kilometre journey from Sydney to Yamba when they stopped off in Tea Gardens. Mat Brown has taken part in 15 jet treks. “It’s a great bunch of people, you get to make life-

long friends at the same time raising money for kids, it’s a win win for everyone,” Mat told News Of The Area. Mat is definitely a jet ski junkie. “The week before we did 12 hundred kilometres, Melbourne to Sydney, now we’ve done the whole of the east coast of Australia.” “It’s great fun, you hurt, but the comradery is terrific, no one gets left behind.” Staff from the Palm Lake Resort were also on hand to support fellow worker Perry Rissman. “This is my fourth one, and it’s a bit cold and miserable out there.” On land, it takes more than a hundred volunteers to keep the jet ski riders on the water. But whether on land or on the water it’s not cheap to take part. Everyone has to raise a minimum of $2,500 just to enter the trek. When News Of The Area caught up with the riders last week they’d already raised well over $300,000 for Variety. That will be added to the $1,450,00 raised since the trek’s inception 20 years ago.

Mosquito weather TEN Bitou Busters of Hawks Nest & Tea Gardens turned up on a very hot day with swarms of mosquitoes for the first weeding session of the year. They worked on the area at the end of Sanderling Avenue, Hawks Nest tackling the bitou bush regrowth and asparagus where there are many other noxious weeds and general rubbish for the Bitou Busters to keep working on all this year.

hunt in the beer garden commencing at 11am and going until 12 noon with face painting available for kids, big and small alike, from 11.30am to 1.30pm. From 1.30pm on Easter Saturday, local duo Paula and Owen will play covers of popular songs from the 90s through to the present day while adding their own flavour and vibe to each performance. You are guaranteed to have a relaxing afternoon listening to this duo, kicking back with cold beverage and some good company. Easter Saturday night sees the irrepressible Phil McKnight take the stage to help you dance the night away before the Easter Bunny drops by with a few delectable Easter treats. All the action of the famous Tea Gardens crab races will then take place in the beer garden from the

MYALL COAST
Tennis Open Day By Rachael VAUGHAN NOW is your chance to give a new sport a try, with Myall Park Tennis Club offering a free open day to come and give Tennis a shot, so to speak. Myall Park Tennis Club is inviting as many young children and adults alike to come and give it a go. There will be lots happening throughout the day, with something for everyone. The open day will take place Saturday 28 April 10-
1pm at the courts on Yamba Street in Hawks Nest. There will be trained coaches on hand to offer advice and tips, and free training sessions for both children and adults. Coaches will also run junior coaching activities, and the club will put on a free barbecue sausage sizzle as well as there being prizes to be won throughout the day. Chris Armour from Myall Park Tennis Club told News Of The Area, “Our coaches will be on hand to help people with their tennis moves.”
Retired bowler 100th Birthday Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club By Lynda RICHARDS TUESDAY 20th March: Social bowls played 3 games of Triples and a game of Fours. Play difficult at times due to gusty S/SE winds blowing 20 to 30km/h. On Rink 2 Christine Fossey, Dorothy Thompson and Julie Kennedy had a convincing victory against Francis Betar, Jan Kuzmic and Jill McBride 26 v 11. Good to see Christine and Jan back
BOWLING
at bowls. The game on Rink 3 was a win for Judi Polak, Carol Hayden, Pam Gilchrist and Maynie Roberts 18 v Jean Glover, Lynda Richards, Carolyn Bywater and Karen McPhie 10. On the 15th end Karen’s side had narrowed the lead to just 3 shots but Maynie’s team gained 5 shots over the next 3 ends giving them a decisive win. On Rink 4 Bev Dunn, Lily Smith and Karen Green held the lead from start to finish defeating Lyn Nightingale, Jo Younghusband and Elizabeth
q Retired member of TGWBC Jan McDonald, celebrating her 100th birthday.
Even if you have not played tennis for a long time, or have never played before, come along and have a go. The Club will have racquets available on the open day, but you’re also welcome to bring your own along should you have one. Tennis shoes or sneakers only are to be worn on the courts. Chris told News Of The Area, “We accept all experience levels, and just want to encourage everyone to come along and give it a go.”
Kelly 21 v 14. A similar tale on the next rink. Kerry Faber, Wilma Drake and Dale Winter holding an 8 shot lead on the 15th end against Bette Saillard, Wendy Jones and Sandra Leisemann, but the tables nearly turned. Sandra’s team scored 6 shots over the next two ends narrowing the winning margin by just 2 shots. With only one end left to be played Dale’s side rallied and scored 2 shots, giving them a win 20 v 16. Winners on the day decided by 4 points for a win plus ends were Judi Polak, Carol Hayden, Pam Gilchrist and Maynie Roberts. Thursday 22nd March: No social bowls played due to wet weather. A few desperados hung around and eventually had a “roll up”. Happy 100th birthday to our retired member Jan McDonald. It was my pleasure to visit Jan at Peter Sinclair Gardens and present her with a bunch of flowers on behalf of TGWBC. Jan played bowls with our club for many years. Her achievements during this time include winning the following Club Championships. The Fours in 1968 and 1991, the Pairs 1984 and 1991, the Minor Singles 1988 and the Triples 1998. A truly remarkable lady. Coming events R.S.L. Pairs scheduled for the 5th April.

BULAHDELAH 3rd Grade Cricket team has claimed the 2017-18 Manning River District Cricket Association Premiership following a convincing 10-wicket win against Taree West. The recent Grand Final match was played at Taree with the team from Taree West batting first. In a strong performance on the field, Bulahdelah set up the win by keeping their opponents to 9-163. Geoff Matheson took the best bowling figures of 2-18 from eight overs, followed by Josh Tynan on 2-28 and Wayne Thomson 2-45. Glen Morante and Cooper Bramston took the remaining wickets. Bulahdelah’s batsmen came out determined to secure the major-minor premiership double and reeled in the target with no wickets lost.
A 156-run partnership between opening batsmen Luke Ayres (68 not out) and Noel Matheson (88 not out) clinched the win in 38 overs. Bulahdelah Team Captain Geoff Matheson said winning the Grand Final was a great way to end the season. “It’s what you play for all year,” he said. “For the team to not lose a wicket is something I have never heard of being done in a Grand Final.” Congratulations also go to the Bulahdelah U12 team who came away with four wins from the season to finish 5th in the competition. “I am very proud of the team, they put in a great effort for their first year in junior cricket,” Geoff said. The teams thank all the spectators and their sponsors Access Fuels, R & R Property, Bulahdelah IGA and Barry Bros Butchery for
