By Margie TIERNEY THERE are calls from local residents and businesses to reduce the speed limit to 40 kilometres along Marine Drive in Tea Gardens. Months of road works have resulted in some major changes to the stretch of road which runs along the Myall River from the Tea Gardens Hotel to the car park near the Singing Bridge. “When the upgrade was done, the 40 kilometre zone should have been introduced from day one,” Tea Gardens Real Estate’s Kylie French said. “It can be really

WITH the 9 September election looming, candidates have been stepping up their campaigns in a bid to win a place on MidCoast Council. For this election, you must vote at a polling place in your local council area, as there is no absentee voting. In the Myall Coast region, polling venues will be set up at Booral,
Karuah and Tea Gardens Public Schools, Hawks Nest Community Centre, North Arm Cove Community Centre and Bulahdelah Central School. Voting is compulsory for all people enrolled, and a fine of $55 will apply for failing to vote. Eleven tickets have nominated for the election accounting for
64 of the candidates, with the majority of groups headed by former councillors and mayors vying for a chance to get back in. Both Country Labor and the Liberal Party are also fielding groups, with just five hopefuls contesting without the support of a ticket. The council will be made up of 11 councillors, including

TOURISTS and locals in Hawks Nest now have access to a 24-hour bike hire service. Boomerang Bikes have come to the Hawks Nest Holiday Beach Park in Booner Street. It works just like a vending machine; all you need to hire a bike is a credit card. There are eight pushies available, six unisex plus another two suitable for children. Boomerang’s Rod Lennon said, “You can hire a bike for an hour, four hours, a day or three days.” Holiday Park Managers Tracey and Ken Moore were only too happy to have the bike hire station located literally in their front
yard. “It’s great for our visitors and the locals,” Ken said. “We have free helmets available to borrow from the park’s reception office,” Marissa Schutz said. The pushies also come with a bike lock. “Unlike other bike hire systems our riders start and end their ride at the same place,” Boomerang’s Rod Lennon said. “So they always return the helmet to where it came from.’’ “In fact over the past two years over 10 locations, we estimate the loss of less than 10 helmets.” Rod Lennon said, “The rider must accept a waiver before a bike is released.”

Small businesses are covered by different rules about dismissal of employees compared to bigger employers. These rules are set out in the Small Business Fair Dismissal Code (the ‘Code’). The Code applies to businesses with fewer than 15 employees. The calculation of the number of employees should include all employees. This includes the employee being dismissed and casual employees who are employed on a regular and systematic basis. The number of employees is counted at the earliest of: a) when the employee is told their employment has been terminated; or b) when the employee is given their notice of termination. If the Code applies to your business, it means that employees must be
employed for 12 months before they can apply for unfair dismissal. This is in contrast to the 6 month minimum employment requirement for larger businesses where the Code does not apply. When calculating the length of service of an employee, unpaid leave periods such as unpaid personal leave or leave without pay do not count. In circumstances where there has been a change of business ownership, service with the first employer may count as service with the second employer when calculating the minimum employment period. Employers should be clear about whether the Code applies their business as it can offer small business employers protection from unfair dismissal claims which can have detrimental impacts on the operation of small businesses.

NO doubt most people have noticed the unsightly environmental weeds growing between the Hawks Nest caravan park fence and the path that connects Yamba Street cul-de-sac with the golf course. In that area, attractive native plants struggle to survive their choking hold and the worst of these are Bitou and Asparagus Fern. Birds just love their tasty berries and so they spread far and wide at an alarming rate through native bushland elsewhere. After a recent solid

“I used the palings as a decorative feature and to help reduce the costs,” Jessica said. “The biggest challenge was time management, but I am very happy with the final appearance, the wax finish really brings out the colour of the timber.” Other HSC projects submitted for marking include Cooper Bramston’s dining table and chairs, Jayden Helm’s television cabinet and a tall boy constructed by Mitchell Pinch. NARELLE and Norm Hawkes’ presentation, ‘Those Blooming Botanists’ was a remarkable account of the botanists who introduced exotic plants to Britain between the 17th and 20th century. Cleverly using a cricket analogy, the presenters traced the fascinating stories of the first eleven ‘plant players’ plus ‘coach’ and others. They included two London nurserymen, Thomas Fairchild and Phillip Miller, who populated amateur gardening and the propagation of exotic plants from all over the globe. Through Fairchild’s and Miller’s books, the original gardening guides, they showed gardening was not just for the rich but also for the lower classes in English society. There were also important patrons of gardening such as Peter Collinson, a Quaker cloth merchant of London who sought rare and curious plants from overseas contacts in North America.

He introduced many plants from Pennsylvania through a fellow Quaker, John Bartram, who during his life grew from an ordinary colonial farmer into one of the pioneer collectors and propagators of colourful flowers and trees. At the same time, the academic botanists finally sorted out how to describe, name and work out which flowers and plants were related to each other. Carl Linnaeus, a Swede, perfected the reliable binomial system for naming plants and convinced others about the importance of flowers in identification. Those pioneers opened the floodgates for the explorers who travelled the globe collecting, observing and trialling new and wonderful finds. These included the ‘Monkey Puzzle Tree’, from Chile, Rhododendrons from the Himalayas and the Giant Redwood from North America. Many other exotic conifers and hardwoods became the choice of species for wide scale plantation forestry in Britain. South Africa proved to be an even
more wonderful source of new plants. Sir Joseph Banks, who sailed on the Endeavour with Captain Cook on his first journey, found that Botany Bay was a plant hunter’s paradise. On his return from Australia, Banks became very influential and later became the President of the Royal Society as well as making the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew as a world leader in plant research. Plant collection even penetrated Japan and China and tea cultivation was only possible when plants were stolen from China by a bold plant hunter, Robert Fortune. Marianne North, a talented botanical illustrator travelled the world alone between 1868 and 1890. Most of her fine paintings are permanently on display today in a gallery in Kew Gardens. In their next not-tobe-missed presentation, Narelle and Norm will follow up on some of the identities who took on a strong role in Australian horticulture. These will include Ferdinand von Mueller, Beatrice Bligh and Valerie Swane, among others. This presentation will be given in the Old Library at Hawks Nest on Friday 8 September at 10am.

All About The $9K Bull
By Daniel SAHYOUN
EIGHT bulls were sold for an average $5,900 at the third annual Ashwood Devons Bull Sale held at Bulahdelah last weekend. The top priced bull, 24-month-old Ashwood Lachlan L101 weighing 740 kilograms, sold for $9,500. Co-Principal, Jo Pope, said the quality of the Ashwood Devons attracted buyers from across the state for the Helmsman style auction.
“We have the auction in August each year because that’s usually when buyers want to join their bulls and start breeding,” Jo said. “We have the best on sale and that quality is becoming known amongst producers.” Females were also up for auction with three joined heifers on offer, selling for an average of $2,300. Jo said the two-year-old heifers were joined to Ashwood Knockout, the back to back Grand Champion bull at the
Ekka Royal Queensland Show in 2015 and 2016. Ashwood Devons has also won many champion prize ribbons at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. “We have had a lot of success at the shows and I think people have come to associate our name with quality,” Jo said. National Livestock Reporting Service Operations Manager, Damon Holmes, was guest speaker at the sale, and said current trends have given the beef industry a boost of confidence. “The market is not at record highs at the moment, but over the last two years prices have continued to improve,” he said. “In the current environment, we have seen how our stock has really been driving that market and it has started to pull back.” Jo said although the dry winter conditions have been tough, the prices at the weekend sale were well above last year’s average of $5,400. o Phot ery Gall line On

Book Week Parade
By Margie TIERNEY
STUDENTS from Tea Gardens Primary School brought their favourite fiction to life last week, to celebrate the Children’s Book Week for 2017. The theme this year was ‘Escape to Everywhere’ and some stunning costumes were created to mark the occasion. Hats off to the students and parents who stitched and sewed, pasted and painted to bring their favourite book characters to life. “I know that there were lots of mums and dads
spending hours on getting the costumes for their children just right,” Principal Mark Clemson told News Of The Area. “The book week parade is another opportunity for our parents to be ‘Partners in Education.’ “Their attendance demonstrates to the children that education is important and something that is valued with most experts agreeing that parent involvement in education is one of the biggest predictors of student success.’’ ‘Book Week’ is an Australian tradition dating
back more than 70 years. Surprisingly, some of the children’s choices of favourite characters were centuries old from the legendary Aussie bushranger Ned Kelly, to the other side of the coin, Robin Hood, who stole from the rich to give to the poor. There were magicians from Hogwarts, minions, spies, police and pink unicorns as well. “It was great to see all our students and staff dress up and actively participate in the event,” Mark Clemson said.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from our three News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. Send your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,
I recently got married and my friend bought me a beautiful set of champagne glasses. The problem is, they are the exact set that I gave her for her wedding three years ago. At first I thought it was just coincidence, but then I found the note I had written, tucked between the lining of the packaging, wishing her everlasting happiness.

Mrs BS, Tea Gardens Dear Mrs BS, I can see why this would upset you, but let’s look at it from a realistic perspective. When you get married, you inevitably get two or more of the same thing. You know the drill: three rice cookers, two sets of cutlery, three irons (how rude), seven sets of dinner plates, and on it goes. It is ludicrous, but somehow more socially acceptable than those brides who have a gift registry at an upmarket store where the only thing you can afford is a gold-plated toothpick. Or how about the couples who make up catchy little jingles that say having you at the wedding is more than enough, but then the small print comes, complete with their ‘we’re going to Europe’ account number. Perhaps what you should do is invite your friend around for some friendly champers, cheese and crackers, and when you are both a bit sloshed, you can tell her just how much her message meant to you. Then read your note, in a dramatic tone, with lots of sideways glances and flamboyant arm movements, lifting and lowering the champagne glass with its beautiful hollow stem, which your friend will hopefully be astute enough to recognise as a metaphor for your friendship. If not, at least you know that the present is in good taste.

Sand Trucked onto Jimmys By Margie TIERNEY TRUCKS are dumping more sand on Jimmys Beach this week, the timing fortuitous following some recent big seas. “This is a planned interim program to keep sand on the beach until the transfer system is up and running,” Council’s Parks Natural Assets Officer, Drew Morris said. “Although the erosion at Jimmys Beach wasn’t major, there was some significant removal of sand.” “It’s timely that this work had been scheduled prior to last week’s erosion event, so

Councillors should have KPIs
Dear News Of The Area,
WE are now faced with an election of local council representatives. So far all I’ve seen is the same tired old face of Len Roberts dutifully accompanied by his self promotion of “What I’ve Done”. With the questionable integrity of the council management and administration, it’s about time we set some KPIs for our so called representatives. As ratepayers we are sick of chest beating over things they think they have
achieved in the past. This is a new council and hopefully will be better run than the last one. This is what we need to know. 1) What are you going to achieve for us if elected? 2) When will you achieve these things? 3) What do you intend to do if you fail? These should form your base Key Performance Indicators just like you had a job. Wait, you are applying for a job so this should be the basis of your employment contract.
So if there are any potential candidates who want our votes, please let us know the answers to these questions. We want representation, not self promoting people who do nothing. Additionally, we the voters can’t vote for you if we have no idea who you are. A bio would be greatly appreciated as all I’ve seen is the “A” team promo and that didn’t give any cause for optimism. A loving caring father (and husband) reaps the benefits of life through his children. Whilst Father’s Day is about honouring fathers, the celebration is about the family. Funds up for grabs THE NSW Government is calling on councils and residents to nominate community infrastructure projects for funding through the first round of the Stronger Country Communities Fund. The funding will support local projects such as upgrades to community facilities and playgrounds including building or
refurbishing libraries, parks, walking or cycle paths, health centres and halls. Member for Myall Lakes, Stephen Bromhead, has held two information sessions for community groups and strongly encouraged residents to identify proposals that meet local aspirations. “The Stronger Country
Communities Fund is a oncein-a-generation investment,” Mr Bromhead said. “I am really looking forward to seeing the proposals that come forward and the benefits they will bring to our Country and Coastal communities.” Mr Bromhead said the fund will support projects between $100,000 and

$1 million, or higher with financial co-contribution. President of Bulahdelah Lions Club, Arthur Baker, attended the recent information session held at Taree and said the funding will greatly benefit communities. “I think this funding round has the potential to allow us to complete the bigger projects in our town like the Mountain Park Development

and the Mountain Tourist and Aboriginal Development,” he said. “Many groups have been working jointly on these projects and we now have the chance to apply for funding to make these bigger and better than what we originally planned.” Community groups are encouraged to speak to their local MP about potential projects that will strengthen
the regional communities of NSW. The Stronger Country Communities Fund is part of the NSW Government’s $1.3 billion Regional Growth Fund, designed to improve economic growth and productivity with investment in regional communities. MidCoast Council will lodge applications, which close on 13 September, on behalf of organisations.

Managing Coastal Erosion FOLLOWING last weekend’s large ocean swells and high tidal impacts on beaches, MidCoast Council is undertaking remedial actions to manage beach erosion at the recognised coastal hotspots of Manning Point and Jimmys Beach. At Manning Point, large swells displaced the bottom few planks of the 4WD beach access, forcing temporary closure of the access. At Jimmys Beach, there was some sand loss from the beach, without any structural damage to infrastructure. “We work closely with local residents to put temporary measures in place that help create a buffer against coastal events such as this one,” Council’s Parks Natural Assets Officer, Drew Morris said. At Manning Point this week, nearby machinery was able to be diverted quickly to clear up vegetation debris and logs and the beach access was repaired and
reopened by Tuesday. Beach users are asked to take care at high tide as there will be limited beach available for vehicular traffic. “Although the erosion at Jimmys Beach wasn’t major, there was some significant removal of sand from the Beach, so we will be continuing with our routine program of sand replenishment on the beach,” Drew added. From Monday 28 August, trucks will move sand along the Beach from Winda Woppa spit to the areas hit by erosion. “It’s timely that this work had been scheduled prior to last week’s erosion event, so we will be able to provide a good sand buffer to the beach before the summer months,” Drew said. These interim measures provide temporary protection of the beach and adjacent infrastructure from erosion caused by coastal processes.
Over the longer-term, MidCoast Council has formed a multidisciplinary Coastal Management group, working closely with Office of Environment and Heritage, Department of Industry Lands, independent coastal scientists and local residents to develop a long term coastal management plan which will give future direction to the management of the Old Bar and Manning Point coastal zone. Council has an existing coastal Zone Management plan and an emergency management plan in place for managing coastal processes on Jimmys Beach. In addition to the coastal hot spots, some other areas were also hit by the weekend’s strong winds and high tides. At Old Bar Beach, near the Surf Club, sand traps were severely damaged, with Council currently assessing the damage and reviewing proposed rectification

The oldest tractor in the race is a 1948 TE20 Ferguson, named Charlee after Merv Turner’s granddaughter. “It’s well and truly
experienced team challenges, individual sporting activities and whole group tasks,” Mrs Henry said. School camps have certainly come a long way from the days of simple ball games and tug-a-rope when it comes to keeping students busy, involved and entertained. “Their experiences included water slides, challenge ropes, flying fox, Zorb ball, canoeing, Mud World, games and challenge nights,” Mrs Henry said. If you’re exhausted just reading about their activities, wait there’s more. There was also archery and a giant swing to fill their days with fun and learning. “The students had a fabulous time.” “Special thanks to Mr Lawless and Mrs Edwards for supervising the students over the three day period.”

kilometres since 2008.” The event was organised by the Rattlin’ Bones Club which was established in 2014. “We have travelled to a number of tractor treks across the state, so decided to host one of our own for our friends to come and join us,” Bill said. At their presentation night at the Tea Gardens Hotel last weekend, it was a chance for the team to celebrate making it into the semi-finals but just as importantly, look forward to bigger and better things on the paddock in 2018. “It’s been a fantastic season,” Mudcrabs president David Bright told News Of The Area. “We were short on numbers but the boys worked so hard, you couldn’t

q CLUBMAN OF THE YEAR: Coach Russell Gunn, Ashley Rushby and President David Bright. would dispute the fact that Julie’s team were against a “more seasoned” side. On the 8th end Julie’s team were down by 10 shots but they never gave up just being down by 3 shots on the 14th end. A massive score of 6 shots on the 15th end by Kayelene’s team really sealed their fate, great bowling both sides. The other semi final game saw Bev Rhodes, Wendy Brand and Elizabeth Kelly give a lesson in how to play bowls to Kerry Faber, Dorothy Thompson and Lynda Richards. Elizabeth’s team winning by 21 shots, the score 27 v 6. It’s difficult to report on something that you are personally involved in, but basically we were never in the game. Our opposition started the
game with a massive 6, by the 4th end the score was 10 v 1. We didn’t give up though, and thankfully after the 8th end we managed to limit their point scoring to just ones. Looking forward to seeing the winners of the semis competing against each other at the final of the Triple Championship which will be played on Tuesday 29 August. Newcastle District Women’s Bowling Association Inc. Spring Carnival will be held on 4, 5 and 7 September. Good luck to our four teams participating in this event. Sunday mixed bowls as usual, weather permitting. Play starts 10.00am, names to be submitted by 9.30am. All welcome.

THIS week is the first round of the semis with the Karuah Roos finishing in equal second on the ladder with Cardiff Cobras, but with the for and against they finished in third spot. That made it a rematch with Cardiff to see who plays Glendale next week and the losing team play the winner out of Hexham Jets and Clarence Town Cobras. It was a beautiful morning and the Roos kicked off and within the first six minutes Jordan Cobb was over for the Roos with Sam Croese converting 6/0. It was looking very much like last week with the Cobras following suit seven minutes later to even up the scores 6 all. The big hitters in the first half for the Roos were Mitch Napier, Tim Higginbottom, Dwayne Fleming, Matt Feeney, Sam Croese, Jordan Cobb, Luke Perry, Justin Anderson, Ashley Voll, Ben Feeney, Jack Croese, Zac Cobb, Mitch O’Bryan, Matt O’Connor, Tim Johnson, Sean O’Neil, Ben Smith, Darren Weatherall and Kane Chisholme. The Cobras were next to score about 20 minutes later to take the score to 12/6. The Roos’ Luke Perry countered five minutes later and Sam converted to equal the score once again
at 12 all. With under five minutes to go in the first half Cardiff was in to take the score to 18/12. The metre men for the Roos in the first half were Ben Feeney, Jordan Cobb, Luke Perry, Jack Croese, Tim Higginbottom, Dwayne Fleming, Justin Anderson, Matt Feeney, Mitch Napier, Matt O’Connor, Mitch O’Bryan, Ashley Voll, Ben Smith, Sean O’Neil, Tim Johnson, Zac Cobb and Kane Chisholme. With some silly play, the Roos gave Cardiff a penalty with one minute to go they decided to take the goal but missed. Then 20 seconds for half time the Roos give another penalty and they decided to try again for the goal which this time was successful to take the half time score Cardiff 20 Karuah 12. Seven minutes into the second half Sam kicked on the 5th, with the chase to be caught nicely by Luke Perry and it was a try. Cardiff 20 Karuah 16. The hard hitters in the second half for the Roos were Sam Croese, Tim Higginbottom, Luke Perry, Justin Anderson, Mitch Napier, Jack Croese, Ben Feeney, Sean O’Neil, Matt Feeney, Kane Chisholme, Tim Johnson, Ashley Voll and Matt O’Connor. Three minutes later Jack Croese was in for the Roos to equal the score at 20 all. It was a very hard hitting game with both teams having a player each at different times in the sin bin

for 10 minutes. The Roos had a try disallowed with touchie saying that Luke went out on the sideline before offloading to Mitch O’Bryan who was in for the Roos. But they didn’t give up, they kept on pushing ahead. The runners in the second half were Tim Higginbottom, Mitch Napier, Mich O’Bryan, Matt O’Connor, Dwayne Fleming, Jack Croese, Ben Feeney, Sean O’Neil, Sam Croese, Zac Cobb, Luke Perry, Matt Feeney, Justin Anderson, Kane Chisholme, Ashley Voll and Darren Weatherall. Seven minutes to go and Cardiff were in 26/20. But the Roos were not giving up and three minutes to go Kane Chisholme was over 26/24. Wednesday Nominated Triples
Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA
23 August The usual Wednesday Nominated Triples drew 44 players to the competition. Organisers arranged six games of Triples and four games of Pairs after a number of cancellations were received due to ill-health. A beautiful day contributed to some fine bowls being played not the least being from the team of Lance Atkins, Pip Sullivan and Greg Pearson. They took out first prize again and are certainly the team to beat each week. They won both their games and won 19 of the 24 ends played. I’m glad I was not on the receiving end of that! Runners-up were Ron

There are now six teams in the draw for the “Queen’s Kitchen” voucher. 25 August The Fabulous Friday Open Jackpot Pairs was cancelled due to consistent rain. It will be on again next week. 26 August The delayed second round of the Club Mixed Pairs competition was played today in perfect conditions. Tom Parkinson and Verlie Gray continued on their winning way, out foxing Kerry and Henk Faber 16-14. Ken and Olive McKeown were too consistent for John Slater and Lily Smith. They won 15-10. The skies cleared for another perfect day for the playing of the quarter-finals of the Club Mixed Pairs competition. A couple of disastrous ends from Steve Jones and Wendy Brand put paid to their chances eventually going down 12-20 in their match against Greg and Kayelene Pearson. Veterans Verlie Gray and Tom Parkinson earned a place in the semi-finals defeating Ken and Olive McKeown in a close match, 19-16. Jill McBride and the wily Noel Jackson also had a close match against Bev Rhodes and Henry Dallas. They won 19-16. In the remaining game Col and Bette Saillard pulled-off a great win over Robyn and Ron Webster 22-13.
