By Margie TIERNEY MATESHIP and memories, family and friends, many gone but not forgotten, all were remembered at ANZAC Day ceremonies across the Myall last week. At Peter Sinclair Gardens, the ANZAC commemoration was held two days early and attracted a large number of visitors to the Aged Care facility in Hawks Nest. Among the speakers, former NSW Governor General, Rear Admiral Peter Sinclair, the Reverend Peter Adkins and local RSL Vice President Scott Beaumont. Representatives from Tea Gardens Primary School read the ‘Prayer of Thanksgiving’. On ANZAC Day itself,

ANZAC Day in the Myall FROM Page 1 the rain played havoc with the best laid plans of organisers. The dawn service was called off, Anzac Park in Tea Garden flooded and deemed too hazardous for the older members of the community. But the traditional March still went ahead later in the morning and crowds of people lined both sides of Marine Park

and applauded as our servicemen and women led the way. Then it was off to the Tea Gardens Country Club for the rest of the service, the rain again playing havoc with the day of commemoration. Hundreds of people crammed into the Club, not a seat to be had, standing room only. “We can’t control the weather, and for that I apologise,” RSL Vice President Scott Beaumont told the crowd.

But no-one seemed to mind, as Scott Beaumont gave a moving tribute to the Anzacs and all the servicemen and women since, who’ve served Australia and continue to do so. “Let’s remember that every life lost, meant something to somebody,” “The war cost us what that individuals life would have meant to Australia, 20,30,40 years of a productive life, work, marriage and potentially a family, and not one or two of them but hundreds of

newsofthearea.com.au thousands of lives.” “Each life was a story untold, and lost.” After the traditional laying of wreaths, it was time for lunch and the Tea Gardens Country Club put on a great spread for the hungry hoards. And what ANZAC Day would be complete without the traditional game of 2-Up in memory of the game our Diggers played in the trenches on foreign soil, more than a hundred years ago.

ANZAC Stories FROM Page 1 can to keep the tradition alive,” Tea Gardens RSL Vice President Scott Beaumont told News Of The Area. And keep the ANZAC tradition alive they did last Wednesday, hundreds turning out in Tea Gardens despite the stormy weather. “It’s all about us, it’s a day to commemorate the ANZACs , the sacrifices and commitment of our ex-servicemen and women and an opportunity to say thank you to those who continue to serve. “It’s also a day to say it’s pretty good to be an Australian.” As always there were plenty of stories and memories being re-lived on ANZAC Day 2018. But it was also a day of firsts. 15 year old Harrison Scully marched for the first time, joining his uncle Geoff Scully in

honour of family and country. 4 year olds Cruz and Ayce placed an envelope on the wreaths laid during the Anzac Day Service at the Country Club. Inside the envelope was a donation of $100 from the Myall River Juniors under 6’ side. From the youngest marking the ANZAC tradition, to the oldest at the service, Roy Day and Richard Milburn, both aged 91. Richard served with the British Royal Navy and received the highest Bravery Award from the Soviet Navy. “We delivered arms to the Soviets during World War Two to keep them going,” Richard said. Roy served at an RAAF base in Western Australia during WW2. Richard and Roy and now great mates and both reside at the Grange . Richard came out to Australia in 1960 and says he’s now more Australian than English. And then of course there was

the story of Kevin McInerney, the man at the helm of the 2UP proceedings. Kevin spent 11 and half years in the Army, as a member of the explosive ordnance demolition squad. For the past dozen or so years he’s run the 2-Up in Tea Gardens and he does it with his

own set of pennies, the oldest coin dating back to 1912. “I started running the 2-Up in the army, I’ve always enjoyed it, meeting the people and the best part, I don’t lose any money.” Needless to say Kevin will be back to do it all again next ANZAC Day. Lest We Forget.

The Fair Work Commission (“FWC”) has recently handed down a decision, Kaseris v Raiser Pacific V.O.F [2017] FWC 6610, finding that Uber drivers are independent contractors and not employees of Uber. The applicant was an Uber driver and brought this case to the FWC seeking a remedy for unfair dismissal, after Uber terminated a Service Agreement that the parties had entered. For a finding of unfair dismissal to be made, it was necessary that the driver be an employee of Uber.

The FWC examined the relationship between the parties to determine whether the driver was an independent contractor or an employee. There is no single or decisive criteria to determine whether a contractual relationship is of employment or a contract for service. The court will consider

a multitude of factors when approaching this question.

The FWC held that many of the fundamental elements of employment did not exist. It was found that while Uber controls fares, it does not make any direct payment to its drivers. As such, the “work-wages bargain” was absent and this was considered by the FWC to be an essential characteristic of employment. The FWC also noted that drivers had control of when, where and to whom they provided transport and that they were not under any contractual obligation to perform work for Uber.

In handing down the decision, the Commissioner suggested that the traditional legal tests applied to determine whether someone is an employee or an independent contractor may be outdated in the light the evolving digital economy.

Blue Light Birthday Fun By Daniel SAHYOUN THERE were smiles galore at the Community Fun Day held last weekend to celebrate the first Birthday of the Bulahdelah Blue Light Program. A mass of excited children, parents and community

members filled the School of Arts Hall where a host of activities kept the crowd entertained. A hotly contested paper plane challenge, showing you are never too old to have fun at a Blue Light event, face painting and balloon sculptures were amongst the

Lioness join Lions FOR nearly 30 years, the Tea Gardens Lioness Club has been part of the Myall Community fabric. But times change and the Lioness Club has now decided to amalgamate with the Lions Club to form a single, stronger Club. “The Lioness Club has always worked with the members of the Lions Club either at their fund-raising ventures or at our own activities,” President Linda Allen said. Recently, 21 members of the Lioness Club held their last dinner meeting at the Tea Gardens Country Club. “Two Charter Members, Lionesses Silvija Vermuyten and Ann Hill cut a cake in memory of all the projects that the Club has been involved in over the years,”

Linda said. “At least 24 Lioness members will now become Lions that will carry on with the many and varied projects that both Clubs are known for.” “These members will be inducted into the Lions Club at their 50th Anniversary Dinner on Friday 4 May at Mumm’s Restaurant.” “Our final donations to the local community this year include $1,000 to the PCYC and $2,000 to the Tea Gardens Primary School to assist with the Life Education Van visit next year,” Linda said. President Linda Allen added, “Thank you to everyone for their support throughout the years and be assured that the united Club will continue to provide the same level of service in the years to come as they have in the past.”

Ash said the aim of the program is to strengthen ties between the community and Police. “It helps to break that barrier of Police being someone you only see if you are in trouble,” he said.

“The Police are helpers of the community and it is very important that everyone, especially young people, realise they can talk to an Officer if they need help.” Following the success of the weekend celebration, the community is now eagerly awaiting the next Blue Light event. “It was so much fun, I can’t wait for the next one,” 10-year-old Matthew Thompson said.

ANZAC Spirit Thrives By Daniel SAHYOUN WORLD War II Veteran, Jack Ireland OAM, said he was heartened to see so many school children marching in the Bulahdelah ANZAC Day Parade last week. “It was good to see the young people out marching and supporting their relatives and others who served in either past or present conflicts,” he said. At 95 years of age, Mr Ireland rode in the lead vehicle of the March this year, receiving the first applause from crowds as the parade made its way through the rain. Mr Ireland, who has taken part in ANZAC Day Marches in Bulahdelah for the past 73 years, said the ranks have thinned over time. “Going back 15 years there were around a dozen WWII Veterans marching in Bulahdelah, and now there’s only me,” he said.

“Presently, only veterans from Vietnam and later conflicts are still marching.” Following the parade, hundreds of people gathered at the Cenotaph for the Commemoration Service lead by Bulahdelah RSL subbranch. As the rain eased, the Scouts assisted with raising the flags, schools leaders shared readings and many laid wreaths to honour fallen soldiers, including the 19 young men from the Bulahdelah area who were killed in action during WWI. Despite the heavy rain which forced this year’s Dawn Service indoors, Mr Ireland said he was pleased to see the ANZAC spirit continue to thrive. “The services have been getting bigger every year, especially the Dawn Service,” he said. “I think people are more aware of our contribution and

what we did for our country.” Mr Ireland was conscripted into the Army in

1942 at the age of 19. Four months later, he enlisted in the Australian

Imperial Force and served as an engineer and craftsman in the 2/1 Company AA

Regiment. Mr Ireland said it was an honour to have served.

MYALL RIVER FESTIVAL: The Pearls behind ‘Buy My Wardrobe’.

ONE of the most popular attractions at last year’s Myall River Festival, was the ‘Buy My Wardrobe’ charity fundraiser. Well, the good news is that it will be back at this year’s Festival on Saturday 13 October and the organisers are already planning for the event and want the community to do the same. ‘The Pearls’, the group behind the initiative, is calling on the community to start cleaning out their wardrobes and put aside some of their unwanted

clothing and accessories for a couple of months. “Around July we’ll have some drop off points,” Kerry Patterson told News Of The Area. Kerry also wants to assure the community that any left over items after the Myall River Festival will still be donated to worthy causes. “The clothes we don’t sell on the day will be donated to the Pindimar Market Day as well as the local Op-shops so everyone’s a winner,” Kerry said. Since ‘The Pearls’ came into being 4 years ago, they’ve donated nearly $10,000 to community

groups and charities. Last years ‘Buy My Wardrobe’ initiative raised over $2,000 which was donated to Harry’s House in Stockton. The Charity provides a home away from home for families who have a child living with cancer and to families grieving the loss of their child to cancer within the past 2 years. ‘The Pearls’ are also planning to stage a fashion parade of pre-loved clothes at the Myall River Festival to show off the amazing bargains to be had by visiting ‘Buy My Wardrobe’.

The winners here will play in the final on Thursday 3rd May.

Mrs LM, Medowie Dear Mr KL, YOU know, Mrs LM, I think the term Express aisle is a misnomer. It leads you into a false sense of security with its ‘12 items only’ sign. First of all, you have to take turns with the smokers, since the Express aisle doubles up as the tobacco outlet. May I suggest that you never get on the wrong side of someone who has run out of smokes. As if that isn’t enough, you also have to contend with the service desk function. This is the place people go to complain about all manner of things. They are annoyed, for example, that their two tins of tomatoes cost $2.85 instead of $2.80. This is reason enough to put a halt to the person in front of you and their groceries making their merry way along the conveyor belt. You watch, in dismay, as the duly discounted tomato tins are placed in a new plastic bag and the measly five cents is returned to its rightful, miserably cheap, owner. Then along comes the woman who forgot to scan her Flybuys or Rewards card, and you watch your organic lettuce start to wilt because it is taking so long. Finally, ‘Mrs First in Line’ is up, but then she remembers that she was supposed to buy some Toilet Duck. You want to tell her that it is better for the environment, and cheaper too, to use vinegar and bicarb soda, but before you have a chance, she has dashed back into the labyrinth of cleaning products and you know she’ll take a good 10 minutes to find the fragrance she is after. You also want to tell her that the Toilet Duck will take her number of items over the allowed 12, but that would be petty, and perhaps slightly voyeuristic, given you have had to pass your eyes over her tins of tuna, toilet paper, kitty litter, salami and so on, in order to count the number of purchases. The only time going over the 12 limit is permissible, is when one of the shop assistants ushers you into the queue because no one is waiting. You can bet, however, that the minute you start loading your groceries, a man with one pear and a small bag of macadamias will stand behind you and tut-tut at your arrogance for breaking the rules. You can’t win really. Carpe diem, Jasminda

filled with community spirit and celebrations,” organiser Brooke Feltis said. As well as a morning tea, the Group gave out around 140 Boomerang Bags to the community as part of its campaign to reduce plastic waste. “More importantly, there were many conversations

with community, educating people around how small changes can make a big difference in terms of reducing reliance on single use plastics such as plastic bags, bottles, straws, coffee cups etc.,” Brooke said. Angus, who completed both his primary and secondary education through homeschooling alongside his siblings in Bulahdelah, attributes his love of learning to the guidance of his mother Meredyth. “My mother did a great job at helping us study and encouraged us when our interests became a passion,” he said.

ALL mothers need spoiling, and we have the place for you this Mothers Day weekend. Hawks Nest Golf Club has the perfect show for you to send Mum out for a night with the girls, or take the whole family for a tribute show experience. Johnny Cash and Elvis will take the stage on Friday 11 May at 7:30pm in a show not to be missed. Andrew Leonard from ‘Lemvis’ has been performing

as Elvis for almost 14 years and Johnny Cash for 12. He also performs as Dean Martin in “The Rat Bags” show. It all began back in 2004 after he won a local karaoke competition with his Elvis style rendition of “My Way”. Then the big twist of fate when, a week later, he overheard a call on 2CA Canberra radio asking for someone to volunteer as an Elvis impersonator for a Fireman’s ball. Impulsively he made the

call, got the gig and made his Elvis debut in front of over 500 people at Canberra’s iconic Albert Hall. The crowd went nuts wanting more and Lemvis was born. His Mother made him up a jumpsuit and the rest is history. Since then Lemvis has performed 1000s of shows of all different kinds. Andrew takes each show as it comes and no matter how big or small it really does not matter.

Please support the advertisers within the News Of The Area

He says “it’s all about giving your best, entertaining and interacting with the people, putting a smile on a face, making someone feel special, touching hearts, creating new Elvis fans but most importantly paying tribute to the greatest entertainer the world has seen and will. Lemvis has come a long way since 2004 and is now entertaining full time. His Mum’s jumpsuits have been replaced with replicas made in the USA, his voice has matured and the passion is there more than ever. Andrew told News Of The Area, “I am really looking forward to coming to Hawks Nest.” q Johnny Cash wants you to walk the line with him at Hawks Nest Golf Club this Mother’s Day weekend.

q Elvis is ready to rock at Hawks Nest Golf Club. “It looks like a beautiful part of the country and I can’t wait to rock it with the locals, and it will be the Mothers Day weekend so bring Mum along and walk the line with me.” Tickets available at the Hawks Nest Golf Club or call 49970145.

The Master Board score Pennant Raymond Terrace 66. Tea Gardens 37. There was to be better competition tidings with the Pelican Pest

29 APRIL: After a two month delay, due to the Commonwealth Games, the first round of the Newcastle District Saturday Pennant competition commenced today with the Pelican Pest Control Grade 4 Dolphins hosting Raymond Terrace at home. The Jeff Baker combination, try as they might, just could not get into the game and after 8 ends were on the wrong side of 15 shot deficit. They managed to mount a come-back but the horse had well and truly bolted. The final score; Raymond Terrace 25, Tea Gardens 12. The Barry Drayton team did not fare much better although they were still in the game at the half-way mark trailing by just 3 shots. Raymond Terrace then put the pedal down and raced away with the match 27-12. In the remaining game, Keith Smith’s team were unlucky not to win losing 13-14 on the last end.

Control Grade 6 Dolphins playing away at Hexham. It rained most of the way heading to Hexham and the team were fortunate that there was no rain during the match. The Ron James combination was never headed in their match with a dominating performance to win 23-15. The Danny Johnson led four humbled their opposition conceding only 7 shots. They won 26-7. In the remaining game, the Noel Jackson team were very evenly matched until a disastrous dropped 6 at the 10th end saw them play catch-up for the rest of their game. They ran out of ends and went down by 4 shots 17-21. The all-important Master Board favoured Tea Gardens

Then about halfway through the second half Dylan Foley was in for his second try of the day and with Sam Croese converting to take the score to Karuah 32 Magpies 22. Aaron Bills was the next Roos in for a try with Sam Croese converting again to take the score to 38 Roos 22 Magpies. With about 10minutes left in the game the magpies were in for a converted try to take the score to 28 Magpies 44 Roos. The Roos Tim Johnson and Jack Fleming took each other out with a head clash which left both boys with eggs on their temples. Matt Croese was in for his hat trick of the game and Sam Croese again converting to take the score to 50 Roos 28 Magpies. On the full time bell Matt Croese was in for his 4th try of the day. He made up for his time in the sin bin. With Sam Croese’s boot on fire with his 8th conversion of the day to take the full time score to Karuah 56 Raymond Terrace 28. Players Player 3 points went to the try maker of the day Matt Croese, 2points was shared by Adam Crampton and Tyson Peters 1 point was Dylan Foley. Coaches Award went to Brock Cole and Sponsors Choice was Daniel Evans. Referee’s points went to Simi Asomua got 3 points, Brock Cole 2 points and Daniel Evans 1 ponit. Next week Karuah take on Hinton @ Hinton on Sunday 1pm kick off. Game Day Sponsors are Myall Coast News and Myall Massage.

66-43 Next week it will be a neighbourly affair with the Pelican Pest Control Grade 4 Dolphins playing away at Karuah and the Pelican Pest Control Grade 6 side playing Karuah at home. I believe the afternoon high tea provided by the Club’s Myall Restaurant to the Grade 4 sides was outstanding.

Great stuff! In other news, following an early setback, the Club premier tournament, the Major Singles Championship will commence next Sunday with a good field participating. There is some new blood nominated this year and there is bound to be some surprises.
