Local assistance for drought affected Farmers By Sandra CLARK “BUY My Wardrobe” has become an intrinsic part of the Myall River Festival event. This year the Pearls have set themselves a goal to top last year’s takings and donate all proceeds to our drought affected farmers once more, working with a coordinator in Murrurundi, Justine Cooper. Ms Cooper said, “Doing It For Our Farmers” is a volunteer group that was started in May 2018 by a lady in Tamworth, Sue Ellen Wilkin, as a toiletry drive to help our farmers during the drought.”

Local assistance for drought affected Farmers FROM Page 1
“Since then the group has evolved into an organisation that provides not only toiletries but non perishable food, care packs, gift and petrol vouchers, hay and fodder, dog food, stock feed, Christmas presents and water.” “We have a network of coordinators throughout NSW that all work together and are guided by Sue Ellen,” Ms Cooper said. The Group now run a ‘Pop Up Pantry’ that is stocked entirely with donations that are delivered to the Pantry or with money that is donated.
0408 153 134
This allows the Group to shop with local businesses to sustain them as they are suffering with the downfall in trade due to the drought. The Pantry has also become a social meeting place, somewhere safe and non judgemental where farming families can come to take what they need and save the money they would have spent on groceries to use on other necessities on the farms. Mental Health is huge and it takes a lot for the farmers to come into the Pantry but once they come in, they return as they find a place that welcomes and encourages them.
Ms Cooper said, “We offer a shoulder to cry on, ears to listen and arms to hug if wanted. We also offer paperwork, help and guidance from government and other drought relief agencies and work alongside those agencies to help our farmers make contact and get help.” “We are all volunteers. It takes a lot of time and effort to make this work and keep it working,” she said. “All of the time and effort is worth it. We will continue to be there for our farmers, to stand by their side, to show them we care, to keep supporting them and make a difference, be it big or small, right till the end,” Justine said.
Joey Scouts empowers Youth
By Marian SAMPSON
SCOUTS is an international movement which empowers youth. Scouts Australia provides fun youth development activities, building resilient and confident boys and girls aged five to 25. Over the years Scouts has changed and now it is an organisation that supports both boys and girls. Joey Scouts is for boys and girls aged five to seven, it’s all about discovery and excitement, and the program is now operating in Bulahdelah. Joey Scouts are encouraged to express themselves creatively, through games, stories and craft activities. From building monsters and spaceships from scrap items, to growing plants from seedlings and singing songs together, all Joey Scouts develop a strong sense of belonging and an understanding of the world around them. Joey Scouts learn how to share and care,
and help other people. They also learn how to recognise native birds and animals, and develop an understanding of the impact of our modern world on the environment. Some Joey Scouts might even get the chance to have their first sleepover with their Mob, an important and fun ‘first’ for developing independence. A trained Joey Scout Leader guides a Joey Mob of up to 20 boys and girls. Nicky Hammerl told News Of The Area, “It's been five years since there has been a Joey's Scouts in Bulahdelah.” Bulahdelah has two volunteers who will be
training as Joey Leaders; until that time Nicky Hammerl will be helping out as the Leader in Charge. “Mercedes and Isla are the first Joeys to join the Joey Mob. “We are seeking other children (boys and girls) up to 8 years to come along,” she said. Joey Scouts is starting the first week of Term 4 on Tuesdays afternoons from 4:30-5:30pm at the Scout Hall on Stroud Street Bulahdelah. Cubs for 8-11year olds is held on Mondays 6-7:30pm and Scouts for 11-15 year olds is held on Fridays 6-8pm are all running in Bulahdelah.

competition history and have raced at most major racing circuits around the world including Le Mans, Sebring and Mount Panorama, Bathurst. The Car Club are getting preparing for the next Motorfest event and recently held their Annual General Meeting with all officers being reinstated unopposed. President is Juergen Seil, Vice President is Ranald Mackay, Secretary is Ross Anderson and Treasurer is Graham Kelly. In readiness for Motorfest 2020, the Club are presently preparing the traditional display flyer for the event sponsors. Later this month an invitation kit will be issued to 140 N.S.W. Motor Clubs inviting them to participate in the area’s Motorfest event, held at the sports ground in Hawks Nest. Mr Latty said, “Proceeds from the day are donated back to local community groups.” Previous beneficiaries were the Surf Lifesaving Club, the Community Bus and the Pindimar Tea Gardens Rural Fire Brigade.
Water Week coming up NATIONAL Water Week runs from 21 - 27 October, and MidCoast Council is urging everyone to rethink their personal water use as water restrictions continue through one of the east coast’s driest years on record. “On the MidCoast we are very fortunate to have a clean and overall reliable source of water that supplies our communities, and we will be celebrating that with some free community events during Water Week once again this year,” says Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services Rob Scott. “However, there’s no escaping that we are in the midst of a prolonged drought in NSW, and water restrictions are in force here on the MidCoast, so our focus this year is very firmly on reducing our water use and conserving this precious resource.” The challenge is to find a way to reduce your household or personal water use every day during Water Week - to find 7 ways for 7
days. There's plenty of practical tips online at www.midcoast.nsw.gov.au/waterweek to help everyone save water. It won’t be all work and no play - there are events to celebrate Water Week across the MidCoast too. If you’ve wondered just how our water supply is managed and how water is treated, sign up for a free tour of Bootawa Water Treatment Plant on Wednesday 30 October. On the tour, you’ll follow the path water takes as it passes through our treatment system and is sent via mains to reach your taps. Our youngest residents will be getting the water-wise message too, as Whizzy the Waterdrop begins a tour of MidCoast Libraries, starting with Wingham on Monday 14 October, and concluding at Hallidays Point on 15 November. Whizzy brings stories, songs and lots of fun along with some water saving messages for pre-schoolers.

his left arm and his left leg and was taken to John Hunter Hospital where he underwent surgery. A 29-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Maitland Police Station where he was charged with affray, armed with intent, and wound with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The man was refused bail and scheduled for his court appearance. A kitchen knife has been seized and taken for forensic examination.
“In addition, on 26 October this year at the Myall River Festival, Club members will once again take part, filling Maxwell Street with Veteran, Vintage, Classic and unique cars for locals and visitors alike to admire,” Mr Latty said. In a recent case, a mother had appointed her 3 sons as executors. She probably thought since she had 3 sons this was the best approach. After she died, one son died leaving two sons who fought so badly that even after 7 years her estate was still not administered. In order to break the deadlock, one son (M), by Statement of Claim, sought a grant of probate on the basis that his brother be passed over as executor or, in the alternative, the appointment of an independent administrator. The other son, by crossclaim, sought a grant to him with his brother passed over. Ultimately, M abandoned his claim for a grant and sought only the appointment of an administrator. Judge Slattery observed the 2 brothers in the witness box and considered that their behavior towards each other suggested it would be unwise to leave one son as executor. There was a
significant risk that the dispute would take precedence over the task of administration. He noted that sometimes the Court will “pass over” a named executor if, for example, the executor neglects their duty, wastes time or is badly behaved. He confirmed that the primary concern of the Court is to ensure the estate will be efficiently and properly administered. He noted that the Court will try to respect the Will-maker’s choice and that a certain degree of latitude should be tolerated to allow the chosen executors to act. However, in this case, Judge Slattery appointed an independent solicitor (Richard Neal) to administer the estate. Each party agreed to pay their own legal costs. The estate did not bear their costs. (See Callaway v Callaway; The Estate of Aileen Margaret Callaway [2019] NSWSC 1275).

MIDCOAST Council is heading back around the region to report to communities on how priorities identified at the Community Conversations held earlier in the year are being delivered. Council staff will again visit local communities from Harrington in the north, down to Tea Gardens in the south, to provide information and progress updates on townspecific priorities that were discussed at the Community Conversations earlier in the year. The first round of forums gave participants the opportunity to identify the things that matter in their communities through a facilitated process. Now, as promised, Council is going to pick the conversation back up and check in on each place’s priorities for the coming year. These workshops are also a great opportunity for community members to ask the leadership team any questions they might have about what Council is up to in their area. "Our first round of community conversations were really well received and it was great to get out and hear about the different priorities for our different areas,” explained Adrian Panuccio, MidCoast Council’s General Manager. “This second round of forums are an opportunity for us to drill down with each community, plan for next year and identify things we’ve already been working to achieve for them.” The Council team will visit 12

LAST month Bulahdelah Central School held its annual World Cup Soccer competition. A total of 8 teams and 90 students contested a round robin knockout competition. Robert McCann, PDH Teacher said Twenty games were played between the countries to determine who would play in the World Cup Final. “Spain and Belgium were knocked out early and favourites, France suffered a shock loss in the semi finals,” he said.
“After some very close games and a penalty shoot out, Germany and Scotland were declared the finalists.” Unfortunately the Friday 13th ‘hoodoo’ struck and the final was postponed until the following Monday. Mr McCann said, “In very hot conditions the Germany team scored early and managed to come away with a 3-1 victory.” The winning team consisted of the following students: Sasha Middleton, Cobe
Edwards, Toby Barry, Isaac Mitchell, Camran Bailey, Ashleigh Mitchell, Annie Sullivan, Angus Devon and Bailey Middleton. Congratulations to all players who participated for their excellent effort and sportsmanship and thank you to the senior SLR (Sport, Leisure & Recreation) class who organised and played in the competition. “Thank you also to the teachers who assisted in refereeing and crowd control,” Mr McCann said.

By Christine DAVIES Karuah Ladies Bowls Club IN the recent past, women’s sport has developed a decidedly harder edge from the more genteel years of yore! Examples of this are the clashes between the Aussie Diamonds and the Silver Ferns netball teams, Aussie and English Women’s Cricket teams, and the Aussie and USA Ladies swim teams whenever in a pool together. These clashes though pale into general niceties when compared to the annual clash between the Karuah and Tea Gardens Ladies Bowls Clubs for the hotly desired Ruth Bowden Trophy. This once yearly Triples competition is held at rotating venues between the Amazon like Tea Gardens Ladies and the desperately fanatical Ladies from Karuah. While
this year was the latest in a long series of clashes, the previous 3 years had seen a see-sawing ascendancy with wins to Tea Gardens, then Karuah, then last year Tea
Gardens again. This made the home team at Karuah on Wednesday last even more desperate. Each Club provided 6 teams of Triples who played over 16 ends each with the combined scores of all games

added to make 1 team a winner. 16 ends isn’t many so there were no dead ends and when one of the 12 Skips would drive, sending the Jack hurtling out of bounds, it was immediately returned to the T and the battle rejoined.

rules decision! As the day reached its crescendo it was clear that by a narrow margin, Karuah’s Ladies had regained the coveted prize. Once the ferocity of the green had abated, each team retired to congenial lunch and presentation ceremony inside the Karuah RSL Club Bridge View Restaurant. Stories and shots recounted and friendly humorous banter saw the usual convivial atmosphere between the two clubs revived. The Tea Gardens President Deyonne Page, who led her side in a Napoleonic fashion from the bank, eventually handed over the Ruth Bowden Trophy to Helen Priest, the Karuah President, who played alongside her troops in the trenches, humbly accepting it and vowing to keep it safe until next years comp. The delicious lunch was enjoyed by all with Ross Parr, the CEO of the Karuah RSL, shouting all to an ice cream dessert from the newly refurbished RSL Cafe. Roll on 2020!!
