Grandparents Day By Margie TIERNEY THERE was standing room only at Tea Gardens Primary School recently for the annual Grandparents Day celebration. “This year we had a bumper crowd of Grandparents and Grand Friends in attendance,” Principal Mark Clemson told News Of The Area. “In fact, we needed to get extra chairs from the Library and still had a number of the more able Grandparents standing throughout the performances.” Among the big crowd were five generations of the one family. Students from each class performed on the day and then visitors were welcomed to open

enclosed so that it can be used all year round. Jeanette has started another petition after her recent letters to Council along with hundreds of signatures failed to achieve its goal. She said, “The Manager of Community Spaces, Recreation and Trades, Daniel Aldridge wrote ‘The service provided by the facility at Tea Gardens is comparable with all other district pools within the MidCoast Council area and meets the respective community’s needs.” “In summary, your proposal is not supported and any change to services will be considered on a whole of Council approach and not on a site by site basis.’’ Ms Hart’s response to Council, “No structure of the community’s under Midcoast Council are of the same composition or need, therefore, they should not be treated the same and they should not be placed under a District Pool model.” She added, “During the last census the Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest area had the oldest population per capita in Australia yet you have decided that there is no need for a heated, covered pool in our area to keep the elderly and disabled active year round.” “The town is prepared to fight by doing a petition which has been distributed at a number of outlets including both Medical centres;
chemists; Tea Gardens takeaway; Coles; Hawks Nest Newsagency, swimming pool and BT’S.” Myall Coast Masters Swimmers have given their support to Jeanette’s
campaign. She added, “Please drop into one of these venues to sign and support this vital project.”

TAKING THE LEAD
Some relationships come, and go. Children might have multiple siblings to different fathers and/or mothers, and it is not uncommon for a change to a child’s surname to be contemplated. There can be valid arguments for and against such a change, and in the context of blended families, such matters frequently require determination by Judges in the family courts.

An order to change a child’s name is a parenting order and therefore must only be made in the child’s best interests, after taking into account considerations in s60CC of the Family Law Act. Over the years, cases have also distilled a number of practical factors to be considered when considering the merits of a change. These include:

RAAF Base Williamtown F/A-18A/B Hornet and PC-9 aircraft conducted air support for Australian Defence Force Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) training on the Salt Ash Air Weapons Range, near Salt Ash on Monday and Tuesday (8 & 9 April). PC-9 aircraft will conduct the majority of support for JTAC training throughout the week of 8 to 11 April, and 15 to 18 April on the range and near Bulahdelah. Commander of Air Combat Group, Air Commodore (AIRCDRE) Michael Kitcher said the training requires single, or pairs of Hornet aircraft to conduct continuous passes dropping training rounds over the Salt Ash Rang. Day and night time activities might continue onto other times throughout the week if weather or operational issues cause delays. “The second component of the JTAC training moves to farmland near Bulahdelah where RAAF Base Williamtown 4 Squadron personnel conduct regular training,” AIRCDRE Kitcher said. AIRCDRE Kitcher said JTACs work from forward positions, and direct the actions of combat aircraft engaged in close air support and other offensive air operations. “In the urban battlespace we face on operations today, the role of JTACs is crucial to ensuring the precision application of air power; delivering maximum effect with minimal impact on civilians and civilian infrastructure. Air Force is committed to ensuring every effort is made to minimise any inconvenience to residents and local community support is appreciated,” he said.

Motorfest Donations

By Margie TIERNEY
WHILE the date has already been fixed in stone for next year’s Motorfest in Hawks Nest, the culmination of this year’s event was played out at the headquarters of the Rural Fire Service in Tea Gardens last weekend. Every year Motorfest raises money for a number of local community organisations. This year was no different with more than $9,500 raised from the event. Representatives from the Pindimar/Tea Gardens Rural Fire Service, Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club and the Clinic Bus all gathered at the RFS to receive their donated cheques. “All paid special thanks to the Motor Club Executive and members for their efforts in staging Motorfest 2019,” Motorfest’s Publicity Officer, Phil Hoare said. “They were also grateful for the wonderful

Phil Hoare said, “The Motorfest Event 2019 achieved its objectives in attracting 45 NSW Motoring Clubs with 380 vehicles and motorcycles on the day.” “The local business houses also enjoyed and benefited from the influx of visitors to the area and it is very satisfying to see the local Community also supporting the day.”

OPINION
Time for Reality Check Dear News Of The Area, US GOLFERS will be pleased to know that if you believe BIll Shorten it should only take about 8 to 10 minutes to recharge our vehicles. Mine takes 6 to 8 hours. This must be some new wonder he is introducing. Obviously his electric car policy has been well thought out. Global carbon emissions are currently rising by twice as much as Australia’s total
annual emissions. It is completely naive to think that action taken by Australia on its own can influence the impact of climate change, particularly given the fact emissions are rising very strongly in China & India. We live in la la land. It is time for a reality check. David Bruce Tea Gardens

Snowy Revisited By Margie TIERNEY
THE Federal Government’s ambitious, $6.5 billion project known as ‘Snowy 2.0’ has moved a step close to being realised, with the NSW Government giving the go ahead to start preliminary works including a 3.1 kilometre tunnel in the heritage listed Kosciuszko National Park. Hardly a week goes by without the rising cost of power or where it’s coming from, makes headlines around the country. ‘Snowy 2.0’ has its detractors, the National Parks Association of NSW arguing it will only add to the enormous damage already done to the Kosciuszko National Park by the first Snowy Scheme. Local Colin Gratwick and his wife Trish know first hand what was involved in the construction of the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme, which began way back in 1949. Colin recently shared his experience of working on the project with members of the U3A as part of their presentation and discussion days. He told the gathering, ”The idea of diverting the Snowy to provide water to the inland of NSW and Victoria was first mooted in the 1880’s following a period of severe drought.” “It was not until 1949 that the Politicians of the two States and the Federal Government came to an agreement for the scheme to proceed. Colin joined the Civil Design Group of the Snowy Mountains Scheme in 1966 and worked on the design of the Murray 2 and Tumut power stations. He and his wife Trish became involved in the PR process undertaking courses so that they not only knew about the Scheme itself but also the history and ecology of the area.
Whilst Trish spent many weekends working in the Cooma Information Centre, Colin often took visiting engineers or engineering students on overnight tours of the Scheme. Colin said, “It allowed water to be diverted from the Snowy River, across The Great Dividing Range to the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers.” “It took 25 years to build and remarkably it was completed on time and within budget.” When the Scheme was completed in 1974, Colin joined the Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation, formed by the Federal Government to maintain the expertise which had designed and built the Snowy.
Lyn Chaikin from the U3A said, “It was a fascinating presentation and a timely one, and we look forward to many more discussions with Colin Gratwick.”

MAKE THE CALL ASK YOUR ENERGY COMPANY FOR A BETTER DEAL
OPINION
Thanks to Lodge
As of January 1st, providers have dropped prices on their most expensively priced plans due to pressure from the Government.
Dear News Of The Area, THE Committee and Members of the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Family Research Group, Inc., would like to publicly acknowledge the wonderful support which it has received from the members of Lodge Port Stephens No. 522 since we first met in the Masonic Hall in 2002. Thanks to their generosity we have been able to expand our resources and provide a meeting area for all those interested in researching their family histories, and also to initiate and support many local projects. Since the disbanding of Lodge Port Stephens, Shop 3 of the Masonic Centre has been under the management of the Sydney Grand Lodge and as we are unable to meet the commercial rental as asked, we are placing many of our resources into storage until we find a new home. 2019 is a big year for us with the launch of our Nota to Trove Project. The overwhelming generosity and community support shown so far has been nothing short of amazing. We have reached the half way mark in monetary terms, but still have a way to go. We will continue our dedication to this cause in our new research location, yet to be announced. Thank you once more to our local Masonic community – we will make sure that your generosity and dedication to your principles are remembered in the Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest area. Anne Shannon Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Family Research Group Inc.

Leadbellies THE Leadbellies are a “Hot Rod Electric Dance Blues Band”. That’s a mouthful which describes the essence of the Band, but for apt simplicity just refer to them as ‘The Leadbellies’. They are a Newcastle based blues line-up, who guarantee to switch on your musical energy, and drive your natural need to groove and dance. They are playing at the Tea Gardens Hotel on Saturday 20 April. No boring sleepy stuff from these guys! That’s for sure.

AFTER winning Gold and Silver at the Australian National Athletics Championships in Sydney last week, 12 year old Hawks Nest athlete Keira McGregor summed up her remarkable achievements by being refreshingly honest, “I had a sore back and a runny nose before Nationals and was worried that I would not go well, but I put in every effort and got 2nd, so close!” Keira won her Silver Medal in the 100 metre sprint and was one of the youngest runners in the Under 14 age group. “She was up against 23 of the best from all over Australia,” her Dad, John McGregor said. “In her first heat race she finished 2nd to a very strong Tasmanian girl while NSW girls
took out heat two. “In the final, as predicted, the Tasmanian won and then there was a blanket finish of five NSW girls with a photo finish necessary. “Keira was 2nd, and Australian National silver medal winner, amazing!” She then ran for the NSW team in the 4x100m relay event, all four runners running great legs, Keira bringing the Gold medal home in the final leg. John McGregor said, “Many thanks must be expressed to her coach, Gerrard Keating, a former Australian 100m champion, who has spent hundreds of dedicated hours working with her and encouraging her in a totally clean and natural development manner.” “Also it is most important to note here her early coach and

trainer Charles Ringuet before he had his most unfortunate cycling accident.” “Keira worked with him in Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest for five years from the time she was 6 years old and he built up such a strong love in her for the sport plus a great style in her running which is still with her to this day,” John said. Keira who goes to the Medowie Christian School would also like to thank those who’ve given her financial support over the past year. “Special thanks go to The Big Brown House, Variety, the Children’s Charity, Karuah RSL Club, the Myall Coast Masters Swimming Club and Hawks Nest First Real Estate. As every parent of a talented athlete knows, it’s an expensive exercise to compete at the top level. “The final event, the Little Athletics Nationals, will be held in Hobart, Tasmania later this month,” John McGregor said, “Unfortunately Keira will not be competing there’s just not enough funds or financial support.”
