Gift Of Love for Mother’s Day By Daniel SAHYOUN LEANNE Sibert doesn’t need presents for Mother’s Day to make her feel special, as her two adopted daughters, Lily and Katelyn, are gifts of a lifetime. Like all parents, Leanne and her husband, Dave, have many precious memories of their baby girls who clung to them, the toddlers they chased, and the joys of adolescence. Leanne said Lily

weeks. Once operational, the new chamber will act as a unified voice for the MidCoast region’s business community. “This area has been through much change and the MidCoast Business Chamber will create new opportunities for businesses and more importantly for the region,” NSW Business Chamber Coordinator Duncan Burck said. “This also means stronger representation for smaller local chambers in larger regional initiatives.” Mr Burck told News Of The Area that the new chamber has the potential to become one of the State’s sophisticated business representative groups.

The MidCoast chamber is expected to bring many benefits for local businesses including providing a stronger, united voice when advocating with all levels of government, financial savings and efficient use of existing

resources across the regional network. “This will bring about the best possible outcomes for all concerned and make our region known to all,” MidCoast Business Chamber Vice-President John Sahyoun said.

FIREFIGHTERS are encouraging people to visit Tea Gardens Fire Station for the Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) annual Open Day on Saturday, 20 May. Tea Gardens Fire Station will be open from l0:00am to 2:00pm and families are encouraged to come along and meet their local firefighters and learn more about fire prevention. A range of free activities will be on offer, including firefighting demonstrations, station

tours and fire safety presentations. Firefighters will also be able to provide advice on installing or replacing smoke alarms, and preparing a home fire escape plan. Children will be able to see the fire engines and firefighting equipment up close, which is always a highlight of this muchanticipated day. They’ll also be able to take home a “Brigade Kids” activity booklet,

which teaches them vital fire safety lessons. This year, FRNSW is focusing on fire prevention in the kitchen, urging people to “Keep Looking When Cooking”. Station Captain Jim Wisemantel said, “Almost half of all house fires start in the kitchen, usually when people fail to keep an eye on the stovetop. Bulahdelah Central School Deputy Principal, Mrs Deb Gilbert, said students who do not achieve the minimum standards in Year 9, will need to sit further tests. “Students can still get a statement of attainment for Years 10, 11 and 12 and for finishing Stage 6, they can still attain an ATAR for University Admission, but if they want the actual credential of

a HSC, then they need to have met those requirements,” she said. “The good news is that they can sit the exam multiple times to get that achievement.” Former NSW Education Minister Adrian Piccoli, said the changes have been put in place “to improve educational standards in Australia”. “To do that we have to set the bar a bit higher,” Mr Piccoli said in Parliament last week.

Everyone has the right to write a Will as they please. However, the law in NSW allows a Court to alter the provisions of a Will. In the case of Jodell v Woods [2017] NSWSC 143 the Court had to consider the effect of a family feud. In this case, a mother left nothing to her eldest daughter (ED). She left her entire estate to her younger daughter. ED made a claim against her mother’s estate. The relationship between the mother and ED was a poor one which had deteriorated further on the death of ED’s father. The father had left assets to ED. This upset the mother and she was unable to forgive ED. She felt ED exhibited controlling behaviour at

a time when she was grieving her loss. ED believed she had nothing to apologise for and tried to maintain a relationship with her mother but was not successful.

The fact that ED had tried to keep the relationship going was a factor in her favour. The estate overall was worth approximately $2 million and the Judge ordered that ED receive $425,000 from her mother’s estate. The legal costs expended in the case were substantial and so the value of the estate overall was reduced. The mother would not have wanted this outcome. This leads to questions about how to best make a Will to address these issues.

MIDCOAST Council and National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) are working together to prepare for an annual bitou bush aerial spraying program, which is set to kick off on Monday 22 May and run through to Monday 31 July 2017, weather permitting. Bitou bush (or Chrysanthemoides monilifera) is native to South Africa, but was widely planted in Australia in the 1950s/60s to stabilise mined sand dunes, however, in 1999 it was listed as a threatening plant species and is now a Weed of National Significance, infesting about 80% of the NSW coastline (more than 900kms). AS we celebrate Volunteers Week, it’s a great time to pay tribute to the people who give of their time to others, asking nothing in return. One such volunteer is Tea Gardens local artist Geoff Moran. Geoff describes himself as an enthusiastic amateur, but

he’s much more than that. He’s now become a vital cog in the occupational therapy program at Peter Sinclair Gardens. His involvement began after he heard about a program called ‘Hospital Art Australia’ operating out of the Central Coast. “I had contacted Hospital Art in regards to running a

program at Peter Sinclair Gardens, but they couldn’t do anything for six months, so it went from there,” Geoff said. Geoff decided to take the baton and run with it. With the support of former Manager Rhonda Pitt, Geoff began his own form of ‘Hospital Art’ at the Aged Care Facility.

“I take small eight by ten canvasses and I draw them up before each class each week and colour code the areas to be painted,” Geoff told News Of The Area. “We work in acrylics which is water soluble and non toxic.” Resident Allan Stewart, who had his 100th birthday a

TEA Gardens resident Carol Nelson knows only too well that life can change in an instant. Just over 12 months ago, Carol’s sonin law David committed suicide leaving behind his wife and four young children. David had a thriving business, was President of his local football club and had a loving family. He was just 39 years of age. “He’d had an illness for a long time, but he hid it so well,” Carol told News Of The Area. “He didn’t want to go to a doctor, he was a typical young male, I can do this, I can get by,” she said. David had suffered depression, dating back to a childhood trauma. Statistics released by beyondblue state that suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians aged between 15 and 44 with around three thousand people dying by suicide every year. That’s an average of eight people every day.

And as Carole has found, for every suicide there are tragic ripple effects for friends, families, colleagues and the broader community. To raise awareness, Carol has become a fundraiser for beyondblue, organising a sausage sizzle to be held at the Myall Quays Shopping Centre to coincide with Market Day on Saturday 20 May. Carol will have leaflets to hand out and be there to answer questions. If there’s a positive to come out of her son-in-law’s death Carol said, “David was an organ donor.” “He’s changed five lives for the better.” If you or anyone you know is struggling, beyondblue says reaching out and connecting with them and showing that you care can make a huge difference in their life. Homework Helpers By Margie TIERNEY

AS we mark Volunteers Week, here’s a couple of staggering figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. In its most recent study, the ABS found that 5.8 million Australians or 31% of the population had volunteered in the last 12 month period. Those same volunteers contributed 743 million hours to the community. No wonder we need to celebrate the volunteer. Take, for instance, the women who lend their time and expertise to help children with homework at the Tea Gardens Library. The group, some of them ex-teachers, spend Wednesday afternoons helping children in a range of subjects from Maths and English to research for

projects. “I just love being with children,” said former teacher Leonie Keipert who’s been a volunteer at the Library for three years. “I enjoy volunteering, and I love books, I read anything and everything so this was a natural fit,” Barbara Scott told News Of The Area. “I think it’s a great way of introducing children to the library and it’s nice for them to meet older people,” Barbara said. It’s a win-win situation for the volunteers, the children and their parents. “One girl when she first came, she was unable to do any homework by herself,” Leonie said. “She was so lacking in confidence and to watch her shine now is so encouraging.” “We find that parents

THIS Friday, 12 May, is International Nurses Day, which recognises the valuable work done by nurses in the many different areas of the profession. Registered Nurse at Great Lakes Aged Care, Anna Hamilton, said the occasion will be marked with a small celebratory morning tea during her normal shift. “We actually celebrate by working; we are 24/7 so we always have to be here,” she said. “It is a second home for us, the staff are like family, and we are like family to the residents, which makes it a very pleasurable environment to work in.” Throughout her 30-year career, Anna has worked in orthopaedics at Nepean Hospital and as a Medical Centre Practice Nurse before moving into aged care. Anna said being able to provide individual care for aged residents, and ensuring their lives are as fulfilling as possible, has been a very rewarding part of her career. “It’s been a lot of years of

Keeping Kids Safe By Daniel SAHYOUN CYBER safety was one of many topics covered by the Police School Liaison Officers at Bulahdelah Central School last week. “Social media is always a big issue that impacts on everyone, especially when over half the world uses Facebook every day,” Senior Constable Stephen Jefferies said. “We spoke to students about the safe use of social media, the importance of safeguarding profile pictures and online bullying.” Through discussions, supported by interactive materials and real life examples, the officers highlighted the need to be cautious online. “Teenagers have an average of 452 friends on Facebook, so if they send out an inappropriate photo, it becomes multiplied to several thousand in a very

short amount of time,” Sn Constable Jefferies said. “We spoke about mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression, and all the other things that come with the misuse of social media.” For the younger students, Sn Constable David Russell said the focus was on stranger danger. “It’s good to talk to the young ones and let them know who the safe people are and where the safe places are,” he said. “It is great to walk around the school and have many of them come up and talk to you, it helps build positive relationships and break down any barriers which may exist.” Sn Constable Russell said they always encourage young people to wave when they see police in the community. “They will certainly wave back,” he said. The Liaison Officers visits are part of the school’s welfare program and allows the police

Lachlan Rutter, Hawks Nest. This message saves me from buying you a present, right? If it doesn’t, I hope my unconditional love and gratitude is enough to satisfy you until next Mother’s Day.

Andrew Kent, Mayers Flat. I love my Mum. She goes to work and helps so many people. She brings me books home and gives me presents on my birthday. I hope you have a good Mother’s Day.

THERE is always a lot happening at the Myall Community Art and Craft Centre in Tea Gardens. As much as possible, the members of the centre aim to be self-sufficient, finding unique ways to finance the purchase of new equipment, tools and art and craft supplies.

Recently, the Printmaking group held a workshop to raise funds to offset the cost of a new print press. Seven members attended the workshop using the experience as a trial run for what’s hoped will be future workshops. “We learnt the process of lino cut and dry point printing,” Susan Truscott told News Of The Area.

Under the guidance of Helen Sillar and ably assisted by Gail Morphett and Dianne Ayers, members were able to cut a lino block and then print with it to see the various results. “If worked by hand, the finished print is very different to one that is put through the new press,” Sue said. “Some members preferred the dry point

I gave my mother-in-law a beautiful framed photo of our wedding day, and when I went to visit her last week, I noted she had the frame displayed, but our photo had been replaced with a picture of her cat. Frankly, I’m insulted and want to say something. Mrs PE, Medowie

Nippers Celebration By Margie TIERNEY

IT was a day to celebrate as more than 90 Nippers and their families gathered at the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club last week for the youngsters’ annual Presentation Day. The strength of the club was on full show, as trophies and certificates were handed out to all the Nippers, watched on by proud parents and grandparents. The TGHN Surf Lifesaving Club has had one of its most

successful years on record, with three Nippers making it to the State Championships at Swansea Belmont in March. More importantly, the Club continues to grow with three of the major awards going to first year members, Anthony Abdullah, Drew Lockrey and Isaac Stokes. “For Anthony, Isaac and Drew, this is their first season in Nippers and they should be very proud of their efforts and be congratulated,” Nippers Coordinator Natalie Skelly said.

Among those to receive the highest honours was Sophie Howarth, who was awarded the Overall Point Score Trophy in all age groups. Drew Lockrey won the Vince McLean Encouragement Award for an Up and Comer. Anthony Abdullah received the Chris Richards Encouragement award for doing his best and being involved. Isaac Stokes received the Rex Sargeant award for

a junior that went over and above what would normally be expected of a Nipper. And the Ian Dunlop Swimming award for the most enthusiastic, and improved swimmer went to Harrison Skelly Osmond. Big and exciting changes are ahead for the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club with $500,000 worth of renovations about to begin on the Surf Club building. Club President Stephen (Scuba) Howell is hopeful work will be completed by early next year.

Dear Mrs PE, I’D be careful about opening Pandora’s Box. Who knows what revelations a confrontation will bring. Look, maybe she just didn’t recognise that it was you on your wedding day. You know, when you buy a frame there’s often an inserted photo of an extremely photogenic couple with dazzling smiles and flawless skin (to show you what the frame would look like if you’d been genetically blessed). I actually prefer to leave the sample photo in the frame, so visitors think I come from an aristocratic pedigree, instead of the sad and sorry oddballs that form my family tree. Yes, I say, as they admire the photo. That’s my sister Gisele, a model from Berlin, and Claude, her stockbroker husband. Is it an attractive cat? Some cats are absolutely gorgeous. From an aesthetic point of view, a Siamese or Burmese feline in a frame may complement your mother-in-law’s décor better than a photo of you and Roger frolicking through the vineyards. The positive in all of this is that you can now stick to a gift-giving theme. For Mother’s Day, I suggest you take back those chocolates and slippers and instead give her a bag of kitty litter and a three-month supply of all-wormer. Carpe diem, Jasminda

Myall River Juniors Compete JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE Myall River Junior League By Neil REYNOLDS THE Myall River Junior League competed for their first competition points in round four, played on Saturday. The first three rounds were played as trial games, before division re-grades were carried out. The “Tea Gardens Country Club” 16s have laid a good grounding for their premiership defence this season.

Mixed results in the trials, have seen them remain in last year’s division. At Myall Park, a convincing 68 point to 6 win against an understrength Woodberry side got them off to a strong start. Two tries each were scored by Kane Chester, Kye Cotterill, Jayden Helm, Josh Kirkpatrick, and Tom Lidbury. One each went to Aiden Hawkins and Blake Swadling. Tom Lidbury kicked 10 goals from 12 attempts. The “Tea Gardens Masonic

Centre” 14s has struggled in the first three games. They won by forfeit from East Maitland on Saturday, in a disappointing outcome. Although not getting a win to date, the squad has stood strong. Led by Dylan Long and Billy Watt, along with Mitchell Barr and Nathan Katz, the side has competed well in stages. New players, Bailey Middleton and Sam Hyde are adjusting to the side. Will Markham and Riley

Wilton are working hard up front, along with Zac Watt and Tyreece Wolfram in the backs. The “Tea Gardens Fencing” 9s are playing strongly, and forming exciting combinations. Logue White, Sam Alchin and Jack Nolan are in good form. Darcy and Toby Wilton are growing in confidence, along with Korban Patterson, Kobi Wells, and Lewis Smith. Darcy Ellicott is fitting into the team well. Boston Marchant, Coby Bates, and Seth Rawlings are always in the play. It is hoped that all teams will compete in the Hawks “Back to the Nest” day on May 20, in lead up matches. To contact the Club phone, 0417 226619 or email: nreynolds.2@bigpond. com.

Muddies double header By Ann SCULLY

LOCAL side, Myall Coast Mudcrabs, succumbed to the Wallamba Bulls in a 78-7 win for the Bulls in Round 4 of the Lower Mid North Coast Rugby Union Competition played at Myall Park last Saturday. The Bulls proved to be the toughest opposition that the Mudcrabs have faced this season and whilst the Muddies fielded a young team and played wholeheartedly, the Bulls were superior in the forward line.Best in the forwards were James Farmer, Chris Sando and new player to the team, Nick John who, despite the lack of Union experience, worked tirelessly and in the backs Tristan Tansey, Karl Nickle and Nathan Colver contributed strongly. On the second day of the Double Header Weekend, the Myall Coast Mudcrabs welcomed the Forster Dolphins for their deferred Round 2 match played at Myall Park last Sunday. With a limited bench, the Muddies nevertheless remained competitive throughout the clash, tackling ruggedly with best in the forwards Nick John, James Farmer, Ray Sharp, Chris Sando and Jackson

Action on the Green BOWLING

Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club By Lynda RICHARDS TUESDAY 2 May: Social bowls played two games of Fours and a game of Triples. The winners with the lowest score were Pauline Perry, Christine Fossey, Lily Smith and Dale Winter. Thursday 4 May: The sky was heavy with rain clouds but fortunately we managed to play some bowls, at times playing in some light drizzle. The format was a game of Triples and two games of Doubles. The team of Francis Betar and Maynie Roberts were defeated by Bette Saillard and Loretta Baker 15 v 21. A good fight back from Francis and Maynie who were losing 9 shots to nil at the fourth end.

Lynda Richards and Lynne Green were having a tough contest playing against the team of Kerry Faber and Carol Hayden. The score here was either both teams having equal points or either team taking the lead by one or two shots. At the 12th end, Lynne’s team had a 1 shot lead but the “tides turned” and unfortunately Carol and Kerry were unable to add to their tally. The final score was 23 v 10. The Triples game on Rink 2 saw Dorothy Dallas, Sheril Johnson and Deyonne Page with a lead of 16 shots against Dianne Kiss, Jean Glover and Nola Jackson on the 12th end. The score was 18 v 2. On the next 6 ends Nola’s team managed to score 10 shots the final score a 18 v 12 in favour of Deyonne’s side. A good morning of bowls. The winners for the day with shots plus ends were

Lynda Richards and Lynne Green. Good luck to Lynne Green, Robyn Beaumont and Kayelene Pearson who travel to New Lambton on Sunday 7 May to try out for a position in the Newcastle District Team. Coming events include Post Pennant Lunch on 11 May. The winners of our ‘at home’ competition will be announced on this day. Hawks Set a Standard

RUGBY LEAGUE Tea Gardens Hawks By Neil REYNOLDS THE Tea Gardens Hawks have had a mixed start in competition, with unconvincing wins in rounds 1 and 2 against new Clubs, Maitland United and Newcastle North. They were brought back to earth with a resounding defeat by South Newcastle, with concerning factors involved in the loss. On Sat Apr 29, the Hawks were tested in round 4 against the Cardiff Cobras at Cardiff. Ten players were out, due to injury and events. With bare numbers to start, and two not able to make it until halftime, the side should have been defeatist. The 13 players who played the entire first half demonstrated the Hawks

resolve in 2017. With a full squad, the Cobras could be confident of a victory. Early Hawks tries on the back of 40/20 kicks from halves Billy Greentree and Steve Slee, resulted in tries in following sets. In a controlled first half, the Hawks lead by 24 points to 10. “I have not seen that commitment in my 20 years with the Hawks”. Brooke Roach spoke of passion at the break, and praised his squad’s efforts. Not one player played below the benchmark that had been set. The second half saw no 50/50 calls go the Hawks way. Steve Slee was sin binned for 10 minutes, for a “professional foul” on the halfway line. Then blockbusting centre Ryan Saunders suffered a

serious leg injury while the Hawks were on attack. A 35 minute delay added to the drama. Saunders required transport to hospital. The concern demonstrated by Hawks supporters and Ryan’s son Shaq, who has played for the junior Hawks, embracing his dad while waiting for the ambulance was emotional. His injury was not as bad as first thought, and with luck, he should be back in the second round. Award selection was difficult. Referees points for the Hawks went to Regan Hunter, who continues to show urgency in his game. Best attack was Nathan Ruse. “Blood’s” hit up rate was exceptional. Best defence went to Brooke Roach. Roach’s intensity had the Cobra’s looking for him all day. He also won the Supporter’s vote based on

commitment. Kurt Langdon won the “player’s player” vote. Langdon’s approach to the game is full on. Others taking points in awards were David Edmonds, whose non-stop efforts while playing with a cracked rib have been a feature. Steven Soper continues to put his body on the line. Young guns, Cain Waterman, and Tarryn Roach are playing well above their weight. Waterman’s efforts were rewarded with the supporters vote against Souths the previous week. Both players played with the Myall River Juniors three years ago. They are now in a unique situation of being coached, and playing in the same side as their uncle and dad [respectively], in open age competition. Impact player’s John Schultz, [who is returning from injury] and CJ Misifosa were welcome additions to the second half. Tries were scored by Brooke Roach,

Win for Steve Pell Four Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA

3 May Despite overcast and showery conditions 46 players, including visitors from New Lambton and Lowlands, rolled up for this week’s Nominated Triples competition. The winners were determined by allocating 20 points for a win and points for ends won. It was the stylish team of Barry Drayton, Terry Munright and Ron Webster that won the money. They were closely followed by Noel Jackson, Greg Smith and Geoff Page. The grass green appears to be coming along nicely and I suspect bowlers will have the benefit of playing on it very shortly. 5 May Fabulous Friday Open Jackpot Pairs did not disappoint today with great weather for bowling. A good field of 24 attended including three lady bowlers. It was the lady bowlers who really took it to their male counterparts with Bill Moon and Dale Winter winning the first prize money from Lily Smith and Kaylene Pearson filling second place. The jackpot was not won and will stand at $200 for next week. 6 May The penultimate round of the Newcastle District Pennant competition was played today with the Mighty Dolphins prominent in two grades. Grade 3 continued on their winning way with a

“must-win” game against Hamilton North at home. The Sean Mearrick four led the way with a comprehensive 29-13 win over their opponents. A 6 on the 15th end lifted the whole side at a critical moment in the game. The Steve Pell team clinched a 20-15 win in what was a very tough match. In the remaining game the Richard Lee four conceded two 4’s but fought back well to only go down by 3 shots 15-18. Tea Gardens winning the Master Board 64-46. Grade 3 will play away at Boolaroo next week in the final game of the Sectional matches and seems certain to make the Sectional playoff round. Grade 5 played away at Fingal Bay today against the competition leaders. They performed remarkably well, considering that they were very much under-strength. Two teams had close matches but the remaining side were outplayed in their game. Grade 5 will play their

last game of the season next Saturday against Soldiers Point at home. It was all good news for Grade 6 who kept their Sectional play-off hopes alive with a wonderful win away at Raymond Terrace. Generally regarded as one of the powerhouses of Newcastle District, lawn bowls Raymond Terrace succumbed to a determined Tea Gardens attack losing all three of their matches. The Ron Webster four enjoyed a 22-16 win,. The Doug Naylor team scraped home in a close one 19-17 and rounding off a great day, the Danny Johnson team picked up a fortuitous 5 on the last end to clinch their win 22-19. The Master Board score favoured Tea Gardens 63-52. Grade 6 will have a home ground advantage next week when they face Tomago. 7 May The wonderful spell of great autumn weather continued today with 22 players contesting Sunday Mixed Bowls. It was good to see many former Sunday players

only 15 fights to Littlefields 40 plus. But held his own right to the end. After 43 minutes, victory went to Littlefield in a split decision. Littlefield suffered a broken nose. Young Daniel remains undaunted and is still planning to turn professional by the end of the year.

Title Fight

IT went down to the wire in the Daniel Evans’ bout last Saturday for the New South Wales Amateur 71 kilo Title at the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club. John Schultz, Billy Greentree, Nathan Ruse, and Ryan Saunders. Greentree kicked 5 goals from 5 attempts. The Hawks travelled to Mallabula on Saturday to record a hard fought 16 point to 14 win over the Panthers. Tries were scored by David Edmonds, Brooke Roach and Jade Duroux. Billy Greentree kicked 2 goals from 3 attempts. Player of the round award was shared by David Edmonds and Luke Handsaker. Reagan Hunter was the referee’s best and fairest, and Carl Williams was voted the best in attack. The Lady Hawks played Mallabula in the twilight game. The undefeated squad was keen to maintain their record, and went about the task in clinical fashion. Two tries each to Taylah Cook, Marley Mezi, and Samara Davidson were features. Megan Markham and Reanna Betwell scored one each. Betwell kicked 2 goals,

along with Utah Edgerton. Teegan Barr and Jessica Page showed good line speed. The Lady Hawks travel to Swansea next Sunday for an 11:30 kick off. The Hawks will kick off at 2pm. Both squads following game will be at Myall Park against Shortland on Saturday May 20. The Shortland game will feature a long overdue old boy’s weekend. A “back to the nest” package has been arranged. Details will be on the Hawks Tea Gardens Facebook page, or contact Glen Cookson at the Tea Gardens Newsagency. Don’t forget the Hawks Supporters Club 2017 memberships are still available. The cost will remain at $25 a single, or $45 for a family. Rob Smith has cards available now. Aerial Spraying of Bitou Bush

MidCoast Council will be carrying out aerial herbicide spraying at various locations along our coastal strip for the control of Bitou Bush. Scheduled works will occur on a number of days during the month of May and June 2017, weather permitting. This activity is undertaken as a part of a broader, collaborative and coordinated program with other public authorities and land management agencies on the Mid North Coast of NSW. Council’s contractor, experienced in aerial spraying, will be following recommendations contained within the “best practice guidelines for aerial spraying of Bitou Bush in New South Wales”, as published by The Department of Environment and Conservation, Natural Heritage Trust and National Parks and Wildlife Service. Two herbicides will be utilised within different areas determined by site specific requirements. Lynx WG (Metsulfuron methyl 600g/Kg) will be applied at 20 – 30g/ha or Weedmaster Duo (Glyphosate 360g/L) will be applied at 2 L/ha. These herbicides will be applied, as per requirements of APVMA off label permit 12251 for the control of Bitou Bush in coastal sand dunes, bushland and grassland. The following areas will be closed to public access for the duration of the spraying or from 7am till 5pm on the specific treatment days: Crowdy Head Reserve; Nine Mile Beach Tuncurry; Pilot Hill (lower area adjacent to southern break wall) Forster; Boomerang Point Headland and Sandbar / Cellito Beach at Pacific Palms Bennett’s Beach, Yacabba Peninsula and Jimmy’s Beach at Hawks Nest. Areas adjacent to Crowdy Head Reserve; Forster Coastal Patrol, Smiths Lake Skate Park, Pacific Palms Sports Complex and Myall Park Hawks Nest will be closed for utilisation as Helipads. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. For further information please contact Council on 6591 7222. c

World Class Swimmer By Valerie MOBBS

MYALL Masters member and former President, Peter Kellaway recently returned from the World Masters Games in Auckland carrying some extra baggage in the form of two hefty medals: a silver for the 100 freestyle and a bronze for the 200 freestyle. A fifth placing in the 50 freestyle topped off a great Games for our Peter who had a late start to his training build up due to a triple bypass operation in August and a trip to the UK over Christmas to visit family. Well done Peter! Over 2000 swimmers from countries all over the world took part and Peter

www.newsofthearea.com.au

said the atmosphere in the world class venue with big screen displays, electronic timing and the experience of lining up with swimmers from countries like Russia, United States, Japan, Switzerland, Indonesia, Canada, Italy and South Africa was an experience to remember. On the local scene, Myall Masters members, Liz McKay and Chris Mobbs, along with former member Col Bertram, travelled up to Pacific Palms on Easter Sunday to take part in the annual Rock to Rock Ocean swim at Elizabeth Beach. Conditions outside the break were superb but there was a healthy shore dump to negotiate on the return to the

beach Two hundred and forty eight swimmers lined up for the 600 metre and 1.5 km swim with the more energetic taking on both distances. Col achieved second place in his category in the 600m and Liz swam exceptionally well just missing out on third place in her category by .02 of a second in the 1.5km Chris came in 15th in the 1.5km. Some amazing times were recorded by some of the younger local lifesavers and their fitness and ability were to be admired. Masters Swimming NSW support Ocean Swimming and it is another way for us to enjoy our sport.
