Great School Debate By Roger DIGBY
THURSDAY 28 November saw the Great School
Debate between Bulahdelah Central School and Tea Gardens Primary School. This is an annual tradition
going back many years and is organized and sponsored by Rotary Myall Coast, and is always a hotly fought contest.
This year the subject of the debate was ‘Should students be required to sit NAPLAN tests?’ and was held in the Library of Bulahdelah Central School. The rules of formal
Page 11
debating are very strict. The first speaker on each team makes the case for or against the Motion. The second speaker attacks the other side’s case, known as rebuttal, and the third
speaker sums up their case and their rebuttal arguments. All this under the stern

Great School Debate FROM Page 1
eye of an adjudicator, Betty Reid, armed with a clock and bell to ensure that everyone has a fair go. The debate was introduced by the Chair, a student who welcomed guests and also introduced the debating teams. Tea Gardens started by making the negative case that Students should not have to be subject to NAPLAN testing. They explained what it was supposed to do, and how it was not achieving its objectives.
Student Art Award unveiled

It was just stressing up students, especially the disadvantaged ones, and was unfair and unnecessary. Bulahdelah then made the case for testing, giving schools and Government the opportunity to see how students were doing and where more effort and money needed to be allocated. As for the stress involved, well, life brings stresses with it and NAPLAN along with all the other tests that they face is just one more way for students to learn how to cope under stress. Then came the rebuttals, with arguments attempting to undermine the other side’s case, followed by the summing up. Then all eyes turned to the adjudicator.
THE inaugural Galleries in the Gardens Student Art Award has been unveiled by our local Galleries in the Gardens Inc art collective (GIG). The Award has been established to encourage, recognise and reward excellence in art, and in 2020 it will be presented to an outstanding Higher School Certificate (HSC) art student at Bulahdelah Central School. “The winning student will receive $500 which can be used as they see fit – for art materials or courses, to go toward further education, living expenses or simply to use as a well-deserved treat!” says GIG president Lesly

Ms Reid was full of praise for the quality of the arguments and the performances of the debaters. She then gave each of them a critique with suggestions on how they could each improve next time. And then she had to reach a verdict. She said that for much of the time she found the teams were level pegging, but that by the end Tea Gardens had won by just a whisker! It was a very impressive performance, much enjoyed by parents, staff, Rotary members and of course the students themselves. After the debate everyone enjoyed a great meal at the Plough Inn.

Stevenson. GIG will also host a special Exhibition and opening function at The Gallery, showcasing the final HSC works of all students in the class. “Being part of an Exhibition, and with the opportunity to sell their works if they wish, will provide a valuable experience into the professional art world,” Lesly said. “Whether or not anyone is aiming for a future career in art, taking time out to be creative is beneficial as a wonderful leisure pursuit that helps with relaxation and focus. “We are very much looking forward to seeing where their creativity leads them!” More details of the Exhibition will be advised closer to the date, which will be sometime in the fourth quarter of 2020.

Clinic Bus Volunteers Celebrate By Ann SCULLY
CHRISTMAS Cheer was spread around last Monday when around seventy volunteer clinic bus drivers and their partners together with the Clinic Bus sponsors and their partners met at the Hawks Nest Golf Club for their Christmas Party and also to celebrate the purchase of a new clinic bus. As Monday was such a windy and dusty day, instead of the guests having their lunch in the outdoor area of the Golf Club, they were invited to use the dining room in the Golf Club to enjoy their party out of the unsavoury weather conditions. Party guests enjoyed sumptuous food which had been prepared by Jan Peters, Annie Fowler and Veronica Conaghan and could accompany their meal with refreshments provided on an open tab at the bar. Some months ago, News of the Area ran a story on the availability of the clinic bus to transport clients to their medical appointments in Newcastle, Charlestown and Maitland collecting clients at their front door and returning them home after the appointment.

The Writers Group held its first meeting 23 years ago and Maureen was one of the Foundation members. Since then she has continued to be an inspiration for fellow writers and will be sadly missed when she takes up residence in South Australia close to her son and his family. The Group meets from 6pm to 9pm on the third Thursday of the month at the North Arm Cove Community Hall for a convivial evening of writing and the reading of homework stories and poetry. to date twenty eight people work on a roster system in assisting with the transport of the clients. Not only has there been an increase in volunteer drivers, there has also been a significant increase in the number of clients who use the facility. Ray Peters, President of the Clinic Bus Committee, told News of the Area, “For the past five years, we have transported between 150 and 160 clients to their medical appointments and now we have transported 302 passengers to date this year. “The highlight of the Christmas Party was when $2000.00 was donated from the Anglican Church together with a further $250.00 donated from the Tea Gardens Country Club Ladies Bowling Team.” The Clinic Bus Committee is always looking for volunteer drivers so if you would like to know more about this rewarding community service, please contact Ray Peters on 0418 203 537 or Annie Fowler on 0403 657 195.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has recently released its annual statistics for Marriages and Divorces, Australia, 2018. There were 119,188 marriages in Australia in 2018. In the first 12 months since the legalisation of same-sex marriage in Australia, same-sex marriages represented 5.5% of the total number of marriages in Australia. The 6,538 same-sex marriages in 2018 has influenced some of the key statistics, including the median age at marriage, which recorded the greatest increase in more than a decade. The median age of grooms in samesex relationships was
44.9 years and median age of brides in same-sex relationships was 39.3 years. The median age for grooms in heterosexual relationships was 32.1 years and 30.2 years for brides in heterosexual relationships. There were 49,404 divorces in Australia in 2018, with the crude rate of divorce dropping from 2.7 divorces per 1,000 people in 1998, to 2.0 divorces per 1,000 people in 2018. Other interesting statistics arising from the data include that 35% of the nation’s same-sex marriages occurred in NSW and the most popular day to be married in 2018 was Saturday 20 October.

Special Christmas Show By Rockin’ ROBIN I’M always keen to talk about Live! Live! Live! So here’s the latest goss. Normally there is no concert in December, but this year there will be. As some of you will know, these free concerts and afternoon teas are put on by the Baptist Church in Tea Gardens. Normally they are held on the third Thursday of each month from February to November. So well you might ask, “Why are they having one in December this year?” Great question, and here’s the answer. Each year the Baptist Church puts on a Carols Night at their church, where we can all go along and sing Carols. This year there is going to be a Community Carols Night put on by other people, so the church decided to do something different. I was told by a member of the Church, “We like doing Carols, so we thought this year we might do a special Christmas version of Live! Live! Live! in December. We’ll use both of the bands that normally play, that’s New Start and Sage. We’ll be doing some of our normal, secular repertoire, but mostly we’ll do carols that people can sing along with.” “You beauty!” I thought, “I’ll be in that.” If you haven’t been to Live! Live! Live! they are great shows, especially for us older people (I was born in the 40s). They are totally free, with marvellous afternoon tea. The Christmas one should be great – I love singing Carols. It will start at 2PM and finish at 4PM, on Thursday 19 December. Maybe I’ll see you there.

2 DECEMBER: The joint Tea Gardens Country Club Bowling Clubs held their annual Presentation Night dinner at the Club tonight. The Night was well represented by members of both Clubs and of course the winning bowlers of the year were presented with their trophies. Recapping the Men’s winners in the order in which they were played. The Club Championship Fours was won by Gary Wynne, Geoff Page, David Benson and Mark Hair. The team of Noel Jackson, Greg Smith, Geoff Fowler and Jeff Baker were runners-up. Col Saillard joined Ross Barry and Danny Johnson to win the Club Championship Triples. They defeated; Bob Skewes, Ray Sullivan and Mark Hair. Ross and Danny made it a double when they combined to win the Club Championship Major Pairs from the defending champions, Peter Gurney and John Parkinson. The Mixed Pairs was won by Ian and Pat Baker over Brian and Jeannette Emmett. Col Saillard featured again when he won the Club Championship Minor Singles from Ron Rowe. The blue-ribbon event, the Club Major Singles, was won by Jeff Baker over new kid on the block, Doug Andrews. Jeff is no stranger to this event and has featured in the final on many occasions. Congratulations to Jeff and indeed to all
to ensure their success. One of the highlights of the night was the announcement of the “Clubman of the Year” Award. This Award is presented to the member who has made a significant contribution to the Club over the past year and is regarded highly by all members for the work they have done. Club President, Noel Jackson announced that Club Treasurer, John Yabsley, has been awarded the prestigious “Clubman of the Year” John Rumble, representing our major sponsor, First National Real Estate, made the presentation to John. 4 December: Although the grass green is out of service for its annual renovation, 50 players contested the Wednesday Nominated Triples which were interspersed with several teams of 4. It was a Fours team of; Mark Nightingale, Tony Coomer, Graham Reynolds and Brian Emmett that won the money after a countback on ends won. In second place, also winning on a countback, was the Triples team of Vic Garlick, Col Fossey and Noel Jackson. In other news: Entries are open for the Club Championship Fours with nominations closing on 4 January and the first round commencing on 11 January. All aspiring Pennant players should participate in this competition as it will be great practice for those not used to playing the 2-bowl game. Over 50 players have nominated to
play Pennants this year and the Club will nominate three sides most likely in Grades 4, 6 and 7. Our final official day of bowls for the year will be on Wednesday 18 December. This will be followed by a celebratory lunch.

nature of your marriage. Given that, maybe we should have a bit of a look at the qualities of a Toblerone that your husband has equated to this timeframe. For a start, 18 years is a mighty long time. To put it in perspective, people who commit manslaughter, intentional serious injury, culpable driving causing death, handling stolen goods, trafficking drugs and arson get in the vicinity of 15 to 20 years for their crimes, so living under the same roof for 18 years is very impressive (particularly if you haven’t committed any of the above misdemeanours). Now, back to the Toblerone. Was it the big Toblerone? Those things are pretty impressive. If it was, then I think you should maybe cut him a bit of slack. The Toblerone is reminiscent of Switzerland, which is quite romantic (until you realise it has been bought out by the Americans). Maybe your husband is associating you with the bear on the Toblerone’s mountain graphic which could mean you are cuddly or fierce or you need a wax. Let’s go with cuddly. Futher, Toberlones have many uses. You can turn them into a lovely chocolate mousse, make a delightful fondue (watch out for third-degree burns) or just hide in the bedroom and sob while watching ‘Love Actually’ and realising the Toblerone is the equivalent of that scene where Emma Thompson’s character Karen gets a Joni Mitchell CD for Christmas, thereby realising her cad husband didn’t buy the sparkly necklace for her, but his doe-eyed secretary, Mia. Scoundrel. Alternatively, you could use the Toblerone to become an Instagram influencer. Did you know there is a movement of sad or bored (or both) women sporting what is referred to as the Toblerone Tunnel (similar to the thigh gap) – a trend to show off those with gaps wide enough to pass a Toblerone through. Seriously. I wonder what the reward is for such a feat? A Toblerone in the mouth, thereby reducing said thigh gap? What a weird old world. Look, just enjoy your chocolate (unless he’s already eaten it) and remember it is the thought that counts. Eighteen years? Hell. I’d be wanting a European ticket tucked into that wrapping (did you check?).

By Ann SCULLY
FIFTEEN year old, Luke McCarthy, was recently selected to play in a team event at the NSW Open Junior ProAm Golf Tournament at Twin Waters Golf Course in Luddenham, Sydney and had the good fortune to play alongside tour professional, Gareth Paddison from New Zealand in a teams event prior to the NSW Open. Paddison is a very experienced golfer who has played on the Australasian and European PGA tour for nearly twenty years. Local golfer and member of the Hawks Nest Golf Club, Les Miller, nominated Luke after he had shown good form in his golf performance when he won the men’s division over the two days of the Hawks Nest Golf Club ProAm and Luke has also won six open men’s individual events around the Hunter area over the past eighteen months. Member of Hawks Nest Golf
Club and Karuah Golf Club, Luke started playing eighteen months ago reducing his handicap from 36 to 14 and is currently being coached by Hawks Nest Golf Professional Andrew McCormack. When News of the Area asked Andrew for a comment on Luke’s performance, he said, “Luke is an amazing young lad with a fantastic attitude. “His golf is brilliant, he is always polite and he is very mature for his age.” Luke referred to his experience in Sydney and told News of the Area, “It was good to watch how the pros manage their game around the course minimizing the risk to get the best score. “Hawks Nest Golf Club needs to be thanked especially Les Miller and my coach Andrew McCormack for putting the time into the juniors.” Luke hopes to continue on his golf dream and become a single figure marker in the next twelve months.
