By Margie TIERNEY MYALL locals will laughingly tell you they know when it’s school holidays because there’s lots of traffic and queues at the supermarket. But that same explosion of tourists worked perfectly for the Myall Arts and Craft Centre staging its first Quilts by the Myall Show in four years. All three rooms of the Craft Centre’s work areas were transformed with 60 quilts and handmade Christmas decorations for the three-day exhibition and sale. There were quilts so large they had to be hung from the rafters, to small delicate creations made especially for the birthing unit at John Hunter Hospital.

Quilt Show Success FROM Page 1 “People came from all over, with some travelling from Sydney just to view the quilts,” Janette Coppock told News Of The Area. “Many commented that the workmanship was outstanding, and a better show than in Sydney.” Many of the quilts had taken months and in some cases years to complete.

“Once you start a quilt you usually work on them at home because they need to be sewn on the same machine,” Susan Burns, President of the MCACC said. Susan made it sound easy, “Most of it is just straight sewing and applique.” But quilts such as Trish Grainger’s took

three years to make and it was all hand done. Craft Centre’s Ali Mills’ transparent quilt, which gave off a stainedglass effect, happened quite by accident, “I did not intend this effect but now that I see it against the light, I’m going to take it home and hang it in my window.” By the end of the three-day

exhibition, hundreds of locals and tourists had walked through the door to admire the quilting group’s handiwork.

these better,” he said. “I’m also aware solar heating for the pool is important to the community as is developing the recreational use for the riverside concept plan.” Cr West has more than 20 years’ experience as a Councillor, a role he thoroughly enjoys. “Local Government spans such a wide variety of issues that matter to people in their day to day lives,” he said. “I’ve had a long interest in coastal erosion, weeds management and ensuring the health of our waterways, we live in a sensitive environment and Jimmys Beach is a local example of this.” Focusing on the future, Cr West believes priorities such as building trust and engaging with the community will result in positive outcomes for residents.

QUILTER: Ali Mills. ‘Most of the money raised will go back into buying another sewing machine and a quilting machine,” Sue said. The Myall Art and Craft Centre is now looking towards Christmas with their handmade decorations now on sale in their shop. “I’m keen to show the community how we can provide value for money for rates and that decisions are made in their interests,” he said. “We will do this by ensuring that we seek community input and feedback around what we are delivering.” With the next round of MidCoast community update meetings kicking off this week, Cr West said he is “keen to hear from all the locals about what matters”. “People are positive and full of energy and with our stunning environment we want to experience as much as we can,” he said. “MidCoast is a great place to live and work, and I think most of our community would be proud to call this area home.”

DISTRIBUTION & COVERAGE:

A Stroke of Wisdom IN 2017, one Australian will have a stroke every 10 minutes. There are now more than 440,000 people living with the effects of stroke, yet more than 80 percent of strokes are preventable. This was the strong message Myall U3A members heard at a Stroke Awareness and Prevention session at the Hawks Nest Old Library. Guest speakers were David Ransom from Stroke Foundation and Raymond O’Brien of Tea Gardens Ambulance Service. David is a retired journalist who has worked with the ABC and SBS. Assisted by his wife, Rosemarie, a trained nurse, he is a volunteer speaker for the Stroke Foundation, a not-for-

profit Organisation which delivers education programmes on stroke awareness and prevention. In the last three years, David has had two mini strokes or TIA (transient ischaemic attack) caused by a blood clot in the brain. “Luckily,” he said, “I suffer no serious debilitation.” Both David and Raymond strongly emphasise the importance of recognising the signs of stroke, memorable in the acronym F.A.S.T.: Face: numbness or paralysis in the face; Arms: drop or cannot be raised; Speech: is slurred or lost; Think: fast, act fast, call 000 immediately. Other signs are

difficulty speaking or understanding, dizziness, loss of balance, blurring or loss of vision, severe and abrupt onset of headache and difficulty swallowing. High blood pressure is the leading risk factor of

strokes. A normal blood pressure is 120/80 and a high blood pressure is 140/90. As he has done since his stroke, David recommends that we monitor our blood pressure and reduce the

Council would make a request to the Minister for Local Government for the categorisation to be reviewed. Mayor West told News Of The Area this is to adequately recognise the size, scale and regional significance of the new Council. “The classification for the former Greater Taree and Great Lakes Councils has not changed yet the population and geographical size has more than doubled,” he said. “The Tribunal is required to make annual determinations on the categorisation of each Council … and any changes are a decision for the State

Government.” MidCoast is one of the largest Councils in the state, representing a region of over 90,000 residents spread over 10,000 square kilometres. Port Stephens Council, which is significantly smaller is both population and size, covering an area of just 979 square kilometres, is also classified as regional/ rural. According to the Local Government Remuneration Tribunal’s annual report, factors such as size, population and diversity of communities are considered when determining a Council’s classification. Prior to the merger, Great Lakes, Greater

Taree and Gloucester Shire were represented by a combined total of 24 Councillors, reduced to just 11 for the new MidCoast Council.

According to the Tribunal, the reduction in the number of NSW Councils from 152 to 128 has resulted in an estimated saving of around $2.5 million on the overall cost of Councillor fees.

A grant of letters of administration is a formal order from the Supreme Court which provides authority to the administrator(s) to carry out administration of a deceased estate in accordance with the rules of intestacy. The person appointed as administrator is usually one or more of the primary beneficiaries of the estate. Generally speaking, an application for letters of administration is dealt with by paperwork only and does not require court appearances, however it is not necessarily a simple process. Usually, an application for letters of administration and the associated administration of an estate involves five steps. These are as follows:Step one Making initial enquiries in relation to the assets and liabilities of the estate, making enquiries in relation to the possible existence of a will and publishing a notice of intended application.

Step two Preparing and executing the application for letters and supporting evidence, including any necessary consents from third parties, and filing the documents with the Supreme Court. Step three Receiving the grant of letters of administration, preparing and executing the documents required to realise assets and commencing administration of the estate.

Step four Realising the assets of the estate and attending to payment of liabilities of the estate.

Step five Distributing to the beneficiaries in accordance with the will. Where an estate is contested the process becomes more complex and will involve many more steps.

THE Betty Bramble reading corner at Bulahdelah Central School is a fitting tribute to a much-loved teacher, devoted educator and mentor. The reading corner was established with donations from the Bulahdelah Garden Club and the Bramble family. “The corner reflects Mrs Bramble’s devotion to education,” School Librarian Jody Mostyn said. “We saw a need for a quiet space for all children to read, so we used the funds to make an area in her honour.” Mrs Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Bramble OAM had a long

She was also heavily involved with Bungwahl Public School and supported trainee teachers through the University of Newcastle. Her enormous contribution to both education and her community

were recognised with a Medal of the Order of Australia in 1999. Ms Mostyn said the reading corner is always very popular and is used by all students from Kindergarten to Year 12.

By Daniel SAHYOUN

THE Browns Flat Driver Reviver station was busy over the recent holiday period with thousands of motorists stopping in for a cuppa. The station was run by Bulahdelah Lions Club volunteers and helped families, backpackers, singles and couples break up their journey. Lion Pat Baker said the constant flow of traffic over the long weekend kept them very busy. “Some drivers have been so tired when they arrive here that they just flop out of their cars,” she said. “It is good that they can

have a coffee and a break before they get going again.” The Driver Reviver program started with a handful of stations in 1986 to help reduce the number of fatigue-related accidents on the roads. Volunteers now serve up more than 1.7 million cuppas and 1.3 million snacks at hundreds of sites across Australia each year. “It is good to be involved as it encourages people to take a break when they are driving,” Pat said. “We have had people travelling through from as far away as Far North Queensland on their way to Sydney, and some of them

haven’t stopped until they have arrived here.” Pat said they have met “some beautiful people” from all over the world. “We have had a lot of backpackers travelling through; they can’t believe they can get free tea, coffee and biscuits, they don’t have this overseas,” she said. Although the cuppas and biscuits are complimentary, Pat told News Of The Area that so many people are generous with donations. “It all goes back into the community,” she said. More than 5,000 volunteers assist at Driver Reviver sites in New South Wales each year.

RAISING triplets and a young daughter can be a challenging job, but proud parents Katie and Phil Barry said they wouldn’t have it any other way. Their three identical, adventurous, blue-eyed bundles, Jackson, Will and Kenny, recently celebrated their second birthday, just a week before big sister Gracie turned four. “It is actually getting a lot easier just because the boys are now a bit more self-sufficient,” Katie said. “They can feed themselves and are running around, and we

When people drop in, you want to be prepared with some mineral water in a blue carafe, and a platter of Brie, quince paste and water crackers. You also want people to think that you live like that all the time, in a sort of effortless state befitting an Instagram photo or two. Then you can glide across your polished floorboards and say, “Oh, Simone, how lovely to see you. What an unexpected, though delightful surprise. I was just baking some poppy-seed bread. Excuse those papers on the table; it is the documentation for my three sponsor children. Let me move it aside. Cheese and crackers? An Earl Grey tea?” If friends drop in unannounced, they’ll see that you’re still in your pyjamas at lunchtime, the sink is full of dishes, the kids are drinking lime cordial and watching Game of Thrones, and you look like Iggy Pop instead of Iggy Azalea, which is never a good thing. If there’s an unexpected knock at the door, you can always hide in the pantry. I do this a lot, which is why I’ve gained five kilos in the past month. Or get a gate, or a goat or a German Shepherd and a sign that says, ‘Enter at your own risk’. When visiting others, the correct etiquette is to call first. This allows time for frantic cushion arrangement, dirty dish disposal and scented candle preparation (as a minimum). It’s just good manners. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Dear News Of The Area,

NOW the council has been elected will we see any response to the underhanded cash grab perpetrated by council management. Following is part of Paul Green’s speech to Parliament in support of the special rate increase. It is confusing with contradicting results and some very imaginative conclusions. Remember Paul Green is a MLC from the South Coast of NSW. “Across the region, 32 percent of people supported the special rate variation as proposed, with an additional 44 per cent supporting it at a lower amount. The total of 76 per cent support for a special rate variation as proposed or a lesser amount is a significant result in the context of a newly merged council. Support varies by region and is attributable to the assets and financial position of the former councils. Regarding affordability across the region, 74

percent of people can afford the proposed special rate variation, with 28 per cent comfortably affording it and 46 per cent affording it with some inconvenience. Of the people surveyed, 24 percent would struggle to pay the five percent increase, including the rate peg.” Sample size used by the council survey was 400 residents. The number of residents in the council area is 90,500. Sample size equals .0042 percent, by any standards this is useless and unreliable. Let’s look at these figures in reality, remembering the key words used in parliament are residents and people. Thirty-two percent of people equates to 128 people who agreed to support the rate rise (.00141 percent of actual residents). Forty-four percent supporting a lower amount equates to 178 people (0.00196 percent of residents). The next statement is particularly interesting; 74 percent of people can

afford the proposed special rate rise this equals 298 respondents or .0033 percent of actual residents, BUT a few lines above that figure a figure of 76 percent is mentioned, MLC Green couldn’t even make sure the numbers were equal? So all this begs the question, “Was the NSW Parliament deliberately misled” or is this a case of a politician being used by a couple of cynical public servants to get their way prior to having to deal with a duly elected council. There is only one way to resolve this debacle; our local state politicians and the newly elected council must demand a full ICAC investigation into this. It’s time our politicians took responsibility for their jobs, prove to us you are true representatives of the people and not just what we have come to expect, sycophantic pollies just trying to keep their cushy, well paid jobs. A likely excuse

FROM an accountant in prison to paperwork flying out the window, Australians are pretty good at coming up with excuses as to why they haven’t lodged their tax returns on time. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is reminding taxpayers that there is just one month left to lodge their own tax returns. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said that over 2.5 million people have already lodged their own returns via myTax, with another 5.2 million people lodging via an agent, and she expects millions more in October. “The upcoming

deadline shouldn’t be cause for concern though, because our suite of online services makes it easier than ever before to get your return in on time,” she said. “If you plan to lodge your own tax return using the ATO’s online service myTax, you need to lodge by 31 October 2017. If something happens and you miss the deadline, you should lodge as soon as you can to minimise penalties.” The ATO receives many far-fetched excuses from late lodgers, such as: “My paperwork flew out the car window when I was on my way to see the accountant.” Or how about this one: “My accountant has gone

to prison. He is working on it, but it’s taking longer than normal because he can’t access a computer.” News Of The Area’s personal favourite is: “My ex-wife burnt everything belonging to me, including all of my tax records.” If you are having difficulties meeting your tax obligations, you don’t need an excuse – you just need to contact the ATO as soon as possible so they can help. If you are having difficulties paying a tax debt, you can call the ATO to set up a payment plan. Depending on your circumstances, the ATO may even be able to set one up online.

By Margie TIERNEY WHAT has an eclectic mix of fishing rods on the ceiling, a whale on the wall and a boat in dry dock? Answer: the new look Tea Gardens Hotel. And that’s just some of the changes afoot for the pub. Local tradesman Graham Winn and offsider Simon Smith were busy last week creating a new look cafe and eating area. “I’ve got this fantastic coffee machine going in and we’ll be doing great breakfasts from 7am,” owner Ben Hanson said. Outside there’s another innovation in the form of a massive pizza oven under construction. “We’ve had to stop the outdoor Argentinian barbecue pit for the time being because of the fire ban, but it will be back next year,” Ben said. MEMBER for Myall Lakes, Stephen Bromhead, has lodged a Notice of Motion in NSW Parliament calling on the ACCC to take action on fuel prices around the MidCoast region. Mr Bromhead said the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission needs to do more to ensure regional communities are not adversely affected by the big oil companies. According to the NSW Government’s FuelCheck website, prices for regular unleaded petrol averaged 125.9 in the Myall Coast region, 129.9 in Forster and 131.9 in Gloucester over the October long weekend.

In comparison, the average was just 108.7 in Beresfield, 111.9 in Gosford and 114.9 in Belmont. “I am constantly asked what can be done to address the disparity in fuel prices around the MidCoast,” Mr Bromhead said. “This week in Parliament I have called on the ACCC to visit the Myall Lakes electorate and listen to the concerns of residents and review the MidCoast fuel market.” According to the NSW Government, around 13,000 users log onto FuelCheck everyday to compare petrol prices and save money at the pump.

IT was many months in the planning and it took many hands on deck to make the Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club’s annual mixed Oncology Bowls Day a great success. The bowls and lunch day is the Club’s major fundraiser for the year with all proceeds going to the Calvary Mater Newcastle Hospital. “It began after one of the husbands lost his wife to breast cancer,” President of the Women’s Bowling Club Robyn Webster told News Of The Area. Apart from the action on the greens, there was plenty of action inside the Club with

raffles and tombolas, as well as tables overflowing with donated goods to be sold to raise funds. “The Oncology Bowls Day has always been a successful day due to the generosity of our local businesses and community organisations,” Robyn said. “Last year we raised over $6,000.” Calvary Hospital said, “Donations, no matter the financial value are always appreciated by the hospital because they enable us to purchase equipment and help us continue to enhance our provision of comfort and care for the benefit of our patients.”

Fashion for a Cause

HAVING a child with a serious illness causes families much heartache and numerous stresses and strains. For families living outside our major cities there is the added stress of finding accommodation so that they can be close by to provide essential physical and emotional support. In order to assist local families who may find themselves in this situation, the Lioness Fashion Show ticket proceeds will be donated to Ronald McDonald House. Ronald McDonald House Newcastle, located in a peaceful bushland setting on the grounds of the John Hunter Children’s Hospital,

provides a ‘home away from home’ to families of children receiving hospital treatment for serious and life threatening conditions – whether from disease, injury or a congenital condition. While ticket proceeds will go to Ronald McDonald House Newcastle, raffle proceeds will go to local organisations and community ventures. The Lioness Fashion Show is on 20 October at the Hawks Nest Community Hall commencing at 7.30pm. Tickets are $15 and are available from Ella’s Boutique, BT’s for Fashion, Alana’s Gifts, Sumeru, Vitamin Bead, Mungo Road and both pharmacies.

A 35-year-old Bulahdelah man will face Taree Local Court on 17 October after assaulting a taxi driver at Coolongolook. Police report the man caught the taxi in Taree at about 10.30pm on 3 October, and threatened the driver on route to Bulahdelah. The driver stopped at a service station in Coolongolook and was allegedly assaulted by the passenger as he attempted to exit the taxi. The driver broke free and ran into the service station to alert police. It is alleged the male passenger then attacked

the taxi causing significant damage, including ripping a door from its hinges. Forster Police attended the incident and found the man at a neighbouring service station attempting to use a cigarette lighter to ignite fuel at the bowser. Police report they were forced to use capsicum spray to subdue the man. He was taken to Forster Police Station and charged with multiple offences including assault, malicious damage, intimidation, resist police and breach of bail. The man appeared at Court the following day and was remanded in custody.

A Taxing Time THE Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is reminding taxpayers there are serious consequences if they choose not to meet their tax obligations this tax time. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said most Australians want to do the right thing, but some refuse to pay their share, or pay at all. “In the first instance we always try to help and educate taxpayers about

how to get their tax right. Unfortunately in some cases people don’t respond or deliberately make false statements to avoid paying the right amount of tax – and we have to pursue this,” she said. Ms Anderson said the ATO has sophisticated systems and analytics that ensure wrongdoing can’t fly under the radar. If a claim raises a red flag in the system, auditors will investigate further. “In 2015–16 for

individual taxpayers we conducted around 450,000 reviews and audits, resulting in adjustments of nearly $1 billion in income tax, and prosecuted over 1,300 taxpayers,” Ms Anderson said. “Criminal investigations and prosecution are a last resort and not something we take lightly. However, Australians expect us to make sure nobody gets a free ride and we are prepared to use all the avenues available to us to protect the integrity of the tax system. “Our message to all

Gunner Memories Four friends stopped and posed for a photograph outside Central Station in Sydney, having recently enlisted together to serve in the second World War.

By Rachael VAUGHAN

FOUR friends stopped and posed for a photograph outside Central Station in Sydney, having recently enlisted together to serve in the second World War. Abraham (Abe) Petty, Walter (Wally) Richardson, Richard (Dick) Grimshaw and Ernest (Darby) Munro were good mates, originally placed together in the 2nd company 2/20th Battalion before being split up later during service. Abe, Wally, Dick and Darby were all killed in action, and did not return home. Wally, who ended up serving as a Gunner with the 17th Anti-Tank Unit, had a wife and a two-year-old daughter at home. His daughter Joan, a Port Stephens resident, grew up hearing stories about her

Father, his time in the war, and stories of the battles. Seventy-five years on, and she feels that some of these stories have been overlooked. She spoke to News Of The Area about two of the stories she carries with her. “One important battle we don’t hear about is a place called the Tol Plantation, where soldiers were mercilessly killed in horrific circumstances, and left there in the jungle,” Joan said. “My father was one of these men killed here, and I urge people to do some reading and learn about this horrific episode in WWII, and what happened to these brave young diggers.” With Wally’s life taken at Tol Plantation, and Abe making the ultimate sacrifice at a place called Ambor Island, their mates Dick and

Craig has also told News Of The Area there’s something new and very special happening on Saturday 28 October. To find out the surprise watch this space next week. And ahead of the Myall

River Festival, there’s plenty more happening in the twin towns of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest. A reminder for those who love something sweet, don’t forget the Red Cross ‘Great Cake Bake’ at Myall Quays Shopping Centre on Saturday 21 October. Get in early to the ‘Cake Bake’ because you don’t want to miss out on Karuah’s annual Oyster and Timber

Festival also being held on Saturday 21 October. It’s such a popular event, applications for stallholders have closed. This fantastic day of free fun and games includes the wood chopping, junior fishing competition and of course the oyster eating championships. The event is held in Longworth Park on the banks of the Karuah River.

Darby died tragically in the often overlooked tragedy of Montevideo Maru, the second of Joan’s stories to share of overlooked battles. The Montevideo Maru was a Japanese Motor Vessel that was torpedoed off Luzon in the Philippines by an American Submarine, unaware that the vessel had Australian Prisoners of War

and many other innocent civilians on board. Sadly, they were left to drown in the hold of the ship, never given a chance to escape. On board were over 1000 victims, consisting of nuns, nurses, priests, soldiers and civilians. Joan said, “The 75th anniversary of these events

has recently passed without fanfare.” “Maybe, even though next year it will be 76 years, someone may pause and remember that after all this time, their lives were not given in vain.” “There are families who still feel the loss and pain of their family member to this day.”

taxpayers is that the ATO takes firm action against those who actively choose to ignore their obligations or try to game the system.” “When choosing a course of action, we consider a number of factors including a taxpayer’s history of compliance, and the number of chances we’ve already given them to get back on track with their obligations,” Ms Anderson said. “The decision to prosecute is only made if we have exhausted other options to get the taxpayer to change their behaviour and correct their affairs.”

The ATO is aware some people are willing to take risks and falsely claim work-related expenses. Ms Anderson said taxpayers considering risky claims should be on notice that the ATO is serious about dealing with non-compliance, and the consequences can be costly for those found to be doing the wrong thing. “In the worst cases a penalty can be up to 95% of the tax shortfall amount. For example, we took a taxpayer to court over his false car work-related expense claims in two consecutive years, and he was ordered to

pay more than $4,000 in fines and court costs,” Ms Anderson said. “In another instance, a taxpayer had neglected to lodge his tax returns over a 12-year period despite being given a number of opportunities to comply. After being fined more than $100,000 and still failing to get his tax affairs in order, he was handed down an eight month suspended sentence.
