this State.” he said. Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington told News Of The Area, “New National Park land has been announced encompassing 200,000 Hectares; as yet this announcement is unfunded, but I want to see this happen. I am keen to see both land at Fisherman’s Bay and Fame Cove brought into the protection of NSW National Parks and Wildlife. “At Fame Cove there is a repeat offender for land clearing… the fines are not a drop in the ocean for this owner and we cannot afford for people who are environmentally irresponsible to hold and own such beautiful unique and important land,” she said. Kathy Brown speaking for the Mambo Wanda Wetlands Conservation Group said,

“Ideally we would like to see it Mambo Wanda Wetlands become part of Tomaree National Park and recognised as the important Wetland that it is through Ramsar listing. “There is a committee at present comprising PS Council Officers, EcoNetwork and Landcare members who are pursuing this, however the lack of an up to date Plan of Management is delaying this. “We have applied to the Premier for financial help with this and we understand it is being considered by the Environment Minister,” she said. The opportunity the increase in land holding of NSW National Parks for Port Stephens, our endangered koala population and tourism is vast.

Stroud’s Waste Management Centre STROUD’S Waste Management Centre will be getting a complete remodelling thanks to almost $170,000 in funding from the NSW Government. MidCoast Council’s waste team will redevelop the Stroud Waste Management Centre into a covered Community Recycling Centre and waste transfer station, with an office, tip shop and improved parking. The facility will be designed to enhance the overall appearance of the site, provide a safe, user-friendly facility to better serve the Stroud community and promote the importance of diverting, recovering and recycling waste material. “Waste management is a high priority for us and this funding will have a dual outcome for the community as it will not only increase diversion rates but it will help us protect the natural environment,” explained Council’s

New provisions will commence in the Family Court and Federal Circuit Court on 10 September 2019 in an effort to provide protections to the victims of family violence. Newly introduced s.102NA Family Law Act prevents personal cross-examination where there is an allegation of family violence between the examining party and the witness party (“the parties”) and: • There is a current final Apprehended (Domestic Violence) Order between the parties; or • There is a conviction (or current charge) for an offence involving violence or threats of violence between

the parties; or • The Court is otherwise of the view that the provisions should apply. The provisions relate to cross-examination of the victim by the perpetrator and vice-versa. Any cross-examination in these circumstances must be undertaken by a lawyer, otherwise the selfrepresented litigant may lose the opportunity to crossexamine. Interestingly the amendments also include a mandatory review of the provisions as soon as possible after 10 September 2021 (set out in s.102NC Family Law Act).

Naming a baby is fraught. All babies are adorable, but what you name your little bundle of joy may not suit them when they are a six-foot-tall, hirsute rugby player, so go for a name they can grow into. All of us end up with nicknames at some point and these may or may not be derivative of what is on our birth certificate. I get Jazzy or Jazz. Since my surname is Featherlight, I also get Heavy in that weird way Australians have of naming things their opposite. Some nicknames come from something we are well known for, or perhaps a striking feature, or a personality trait. A lot of nicknames are just surnames with ‘y’ added to the end, which is okay if your last name is Brown or Finn or Jones, but a bit fraught if your strapping lad has the surname Fann or Loop or Fair. Another fun game kids enjoy is to swap the first letter of first names and surnames, a pastime that caused many sleepless nights for poor little Freddy Tuck. Let’s use politicians as a case in point for nicknames. For shortened name versions we need look no further than ScoMo and BoJo. Trump has more nicknames than policies and these are a mix of his perceived actions and his unfortunate looks: Fake President, Traitor Trump, Cheatin’ Donald, Agent Orange, Little Hands, President Spanky, and on it goes. Tony Abbott was nicknamed The Mad Monk, for his early priestly aspirations and growing bald patch. Barnaby Joyce was nicknamed The Beetrooter due to his ruddy complexion and for taking office public relations a step too far. Be very careful to look at the match between first and second names. Something not considered by the parents of E.C. Lay, O. Men and Y. Nott. Apparently the guardians of Elle Vator, Etta Lott, Sarah Tonin and Richard Face didn’t give it a lot of thought either.

COUNCIL Round-Up

By Cr Len ROBERTS Upper Myall Roadwork

Construction works on Upper Myall Road are complete improving, reconstructing and sealing approximately 1550m of gravel road. The road was widened and drainage was improved. Water flow and good drainage is crucial for long lasting roads. Five culverts were replaced as part of the work. The road now has a 7m wide seal. The work was undertaken by staff from Bulahdelah.

Water restrictions

Moderate water restrictions will be introduced across the region from Monday, 2 September. If no or insufficient rainfall eventuates, we are very likely moving to Level 4 Restrictions (no outdoor water use) by the third week in September, or early October.

Myall Quays

Residents have reported dead fish in the Myall Quays “lake”. Council and the EPA

q

have been notified and is being investigated and cleaned up. This has happened at least 3 times in the past. It may or may not be a natural phenomenon. Fish kills are often the first visible signs of environmental stress and are usually investigated as a matter of urgency by environmental agencies to determine the cause of the kill. Many fish species have a relatively low tolerance of variations in environmental conditions. Dry conditions in the catchment coupled with the rain in the last few days has resulted in altered salinity levels in the lake as incoming sea tides mix with outgoing freshwater's of river systems.

Yalinbah Street

Council has conducted an internal investigation at the intersection of Myall and Yalinbah Street after a motor vehicle accident insurance claim was submitted requesting reimbursement on the basis that the intersection wasn’t sufficiently signposted. There is an existing Give Way sign on the southern leg of Yalinbah Street. Council will install a Give Way sign on the northern leg.

4 SEPTEMBER: Well the Jaffa is still around the bowling scene although many might have thought he had cashed in his chips. There has been a hiatus with bowling events but activity has been resumed. Today, beautiful weather greeted the 50 Bowlers attended the usual gala in the form of Nominated Triples. The winners on the grass were: Vic Garlick, Col Fossey and Bill Heylbut, and on the synthetic John Bilby Graham Reynolds and Brian Emmett won the money. The Lucky losers were the Fours team of G.Uff, Ken Wigman B.Lind and Gary Porter. 7 September The annual Club Mixed Pairs competition commenced today with a good field of 16 teams taking part. The timing was not good as the first round was played in appalling weather with strong, gusty south westerly winds playing havoc with the players. Nonetheless, four teams

made it through to the semifinals. These were; Leigh Hunt and Dale Winter, Ian and Pat Baker, Jean Glover and Ross Barry and Jeanette and Brian Emmet. 8 September: The strong winds continued today when the Sunday bowlers enjoyed a triples game and a game of pairs. This was followed by an enjoyable lunch of hot dogs and good company. The winners were; Ken Eldridge, ( visitor), and our own Greg Smith. Runners-up were; Ray Prigg, Ann Remmant and Dave Perry. Next Sunday, 15 September, there will be a visit from the Belmont Travelling Bowlers. The Sunday organisers are looking for 30 odd players to take them on and compete for a trophy. The semi-finals and finals of the Club Mixed Pairs competition was played today with Leigh Hunt and Dale Winter taking on Ian and Pat Baker and Jean Glover and Ross Barry opposing Jeannette and Brian Emmett.

The Baker combination was too strong for the Hunt/ Winter team, booking a place in the final with a comprehensive win 20-6. The Emmetts likewise had a similar win in their match, beating Jean and Ross 20-7. The winds dropped in the afternoon for the final of the Mixed Pairs competition but it did not do Jeannette and Brian any favours as Ian and Pat powered away for an easy win, 20-7, to claim the title. Congratulations to them and all the teams taking part. In other news: The annual charity day for the “Start in Life Foundation” will be held on Friday 20 September. Entries are being received now for the prestigious Palm Lake Mixed Pairs will take place over the weekend of 19 and 20 October with the format being 5 games of 12 ends. This is a “money” tournament and should attract a good field. Bowlers are reminded to support the annual “Oncology Day” to be held on Friday 18 October.

Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling By Lynda RICHARDS

TUESDAY 3rd September: Social bowls, 3 games of 3 bowls Triples 18 ends, and a game of Fours with Leona Clissold playing "swinger" lead. A good comeback by Jan Coomer, Dot Dallas and Karen Green who were losing by 6 shots on the 10th end narrowing the gap to just 2 shots by the end of play against Sheila Rattray, Jill McBride and Pat Baker 18 v 16. The Fours was also a "never say die" game Leona Clissold, Pam Gilchrist, Deyonne Page and Kathie Rimmer had a lead of 7 shots, but just scrapped in by 1 v Leona, Jean Glover, Julie Kennedy and Maynie Roberts 15 v 14. A convincing win for Jeanette Emmett, Bev Rhodes and Dale Winter 21 v Lynda Richards, Christine Fossey and Robyn Webster 12. An even matched contest between Carol Hayden, Dorothy Thompson and Sandra Leisemann 15 v Sheril Johnson, Judi Polak and Loretta Baker 14. The winners on the day were Carol, Dorothy and Sandra. The lucky winner of the voucher to the Myall Bistro and Café was Loretta Baker. Thursday 5th Septem-

ber: Round 1 of the Open Consistency Competition plus social bowls. A bowler has a possibility of scoring 10 points on any end. Lynne Green and Lorraine Murphy played on Tuesday, (due to player availability). This game lasted 30 ends with Lynne in the lead for most of the game. On the second last end the score was Lynne 142 and Lorraine 148, still anyone's game but Lorraine got 7 points, winning 155 v 145. Jean Glover started strongly in her match against Bette Saillard holding a 16 shot lead on the 10th end but after this Bette took control winning on the 28th end 154 v 126. A great effort by newcomer Leona Clissold against a more seasoned bowler Kathie Rimmer, after 30 ends Kathie claimed victory 152 v 138. It's always great to see our new bowlers "having a go" in our club competitions. Loretta Baker narrowly held the lead until the 11th end against Maynie Roberts but despite Loretta's best efforts Maynie won on the 27th end 155 v 115. Brilliant display

of consistent bowling by all competitors. Thanks to the Markers Kayelene Pearson, Judi Polak, Sandra Leisemann and Pat Baker.
