Mystery roadside romance prequel to Valentines Day By Sandra Murray LAST week a large banner appeared alongside Myall Way, Tea Gardens, declaring “I love you Rebecca”. This mystery is perhaps a prequel to Valentine’s Day when many people go to some lengths to be romantic. While the 14 February is regarded by some people as being overly commercial, the day is in fact an old celebration, traceable back to Roman Saints, then later immortalised as a day of a romance by English writer Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century, and celebrated since with fine dining in the French Royal courts. around Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest how they were celebrating love and romance. First up was Rebekah Hinitt from the Myall River Bakery Café who is taking her boyfriend, Bowen, to the Cessnock Aussie Nightmarkets for a romantic dinner. “Well we are actually going with the whole family,” she added with a smile. “Valentine's is a good excuse to spend some money”, she stated. Next were Matt and Emma who were visiting Hawks Nest, both enjoying an early valentines’ weekend before Emma starts Air Force basic training at Wagga next week. “We love the water views,” they told News Of The Area. “Especially with hot chips in the rain.” Next was local resident, Stephen MacMahon, who has been happily married for 43 years. He confided with a smile, “I am going to give my beautiful wife Janice a big kiss. Then she will no doubt ask me what I have done wrong.” Finally, local Post Office Managers, Russell

Travel Diary: ANASAZI Article #2

q

John Blackbourn.

By John Blackbourn THE period of time we are looking at in the history of the USA is approximately the years 1200 AD to 1300 AD when the people who came from the north to inhabit central USA were called the ANASAZI. Like all new races they were hunters & gatherers , chased & captured native

animals to feed their families. But these “Indians” were a lot more productive than that & eventually became fine builders of permanent residences .It is these structures of today that hold the world spellbound & signify the ability & creativity of this brilliant race of short lived humans to add their contribution to society. The absolute best of their existence is at MESA VERDE & in particular “the CLIFF PALACE” which I had the privilege to visit & inspect 12 months ago. There are thought to be some 70+ villages of the Anasazi people in the Colorado River area which spreads over 4 States within the USA. So the question remains , why did these nomadic & resourceful people decide to take up permanent residency & in such isolated locations which changed the way they q Totem pole saying this is Anasazi country

The Mesa Verde where Anasazi built Cliff Palace

lived & potentially caused their demise. The most accepted theory is that climatic conditions caused by the massive 1276 to 1299 drought that devastated this dry & arid area might have caused some villages to attack others nearby , steal food & reduce the population which was already killing out most of the native animals used for meat. So in order to protect themselves, each family group of Anasazi decided to live in caves near the tops of these Mesas as a means of self protection. The lack of timber to create roof beams became an issue because the earlier 1130 to 1180 drought said to be the

worst the USA has ever experienced, meant that good strong timber was already in short supply. This region of the USA was basically the last area to be settled in that nation because the land is so poor & rainfall unreliable. This all probably sounds like issues many people suspect are happening in our world today, but I know from many years fishing this area that its annual rainfall can be as low as 2 inches per year although one year we had that much in a storm one night which caused local havoc. Cliff Palace will be covered in detail with Article #3 next week.

In April 2019, the Australian Law Reform Commission released its final report: “Family Law for the Future”. Recommendation 12 is that the Family Law Act should be amended to include a presumption of equality of contributions during the relationship, when determining what is just and equitable in property settlements. The Act currently provides for the exercise of discretion when determining just and equitable property adjustment, after consideration of relevant direct and indirect financial and non-financial, parenting and homemaking contributions. The courts have long held that the contributions of a breadwinner will invariably be as important as those of a homemaker, with each case being potentially different from the next. Future needs are also taken into account. I do not support this recommendation. I cannot

see how it will deal with challenges that arise in short relationships where one party may have introduced significantly greater assets and income than the other, or in relationships where a large inheritance has been received and preserved, or where a parent/ homemaker has made great efforts over a long period to keep a family together and whose contributions should be given appropriate weight. A change to a presumption of equality may also deter some folk from entering into relationships without a financial agreement and adversely impact on the mutuality of existing relationships. Senior couples seeking companionship in their later years may have more reservations, and parents giving benefits to adult children may become more cautious. Whilst I lean to the side of equitable rather than equal, I welcome the discussion.

RESEARCH and planning for MidCoast Council’s inaugural Cultural Plan 2036 is now underway and the team involved will be looking to the wider community to help develop this important document. According to Create NSW’s Cultural Infrastructure Plan, culture is defined as “the production, distribution and participation in creativity by residents, workers and visitors, and the reflection and expression of a place’s customs, traditions, heritage and social character.” This includes visual and performing arts, music, museums and galleries, the representation and animation of our history and heritage, libraries, craft, design, food, publishing, film, literature, digital and new media, television and interactive software. It also includes creativity

in the public realm, such as the design of the built environment including public spaces, imaginative use of lighting and expressions of community identity. The MidCoast Cultural Plan 2036 will provide Council with a framework to work with the community to achieve actionable outcomes in relation to our creative industries. The importance of cultural planning extends beyond arts and culture, recognising the broader lifestyle of residents, economic impacts and the experience of visitors and this means everyone across the MidCoast will benefit from the development of a cultural plan. “Our community will play a major role in helping us gather information and ideas to incorporate into the cultural plan, it’s an exciting time for our Council and our

region,” said Paul De Szell, Council’s Director of Liveable Communities. In 2019 Council welcomed the MidCoast Cultural Plan 2036 Reference Group, which includes Councillor representatives, community representatives and members from Arts Mid North Coast and Destination North Coast. The purpose of the Reference Group is to provide guidance, support and advocacy to assist with the development of the MidCoast Cultural Plan 2036. Community consultation will begin in March with a range of creative and interactive events planned throughout the year to get the community involved. “We can’t wait to get out there and watch this plan take shape with the help of those who will directly benefit from it – our community”.

Water restrictions back to Level Two

WATER restrictions across the MidCoast region will wind back to Level 2 (high) water restrictions from Friday 7 February. “It’s a great relief to see some regular and good rainfall returning after what has been one of the driest periods ever seen in the MidCoast region and NSW,” said MidCoast Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Rob Scott. “Good rainfall through January in the Barrington catchment has allowed us to return to the river to supply the town of Gloucester. We were trucking water to Gloucester for the first three weeks in January.” “The river is continuing to rise and tributaries of the Manning are also all on the rise, allowing us to progress refilling the Bootawa water storage, which supplies the Manning and Forster - Tuncurry areas.” The Bootawa storage is currently around

News Of The Area

72% capacity, with Council continuing to pump when water is clean enough. After the drought, the first flushes of water down the rivers have presented challenges with high turbidity (dirty water) and phosphorous levels. “Fortunately the Bootawa Treatment Plant has great capability to treat water to a very high quality compared to many other areas of NSW. This allows us to extract and use water that otherwise might have to be let go.” “Severe water restrictions have an impact on local businesses and the economy, along with considerable inconvenience for local residents, so we’re looking to ensure the balance between water conservation and protecting local jobs and livelihoods is maintained as best as we can.” “Together with the increase in supply from the Nabiac Aquifer, we now have some operational flexibility to supplement the water supply system, so we’re able to ease the

burden of water restrictions on our customers and our local businesses for now. We want to thank everyone – the whole community has pulled together to conserve water during this extended drought.” With hot weather continuing for a couple of months yet, it’s important for everyone to continue to be water conscious, with Level 2 water restrictions in effect from Friday 7 February. Level 2 restrictions mean that you can use handheld hoses for up to 30 minutes every second day, before 9am or after 4pm. You can also use garden irrigation systems, or sprinklers, for 15 minutes only, as part of the 30 minute allocation. If your house number is an even number, water on the even days of the month; for houses with odd numbers, water on the odd days of the month, and there's no watering at all on the 31st day of any month. This includes

topping up home pools. And if rain's on the way - don’t water outdoors at all. Saving water saves you money as well! In addition, use buckets, with trigger hose rinsing for washing cars and boats. If possible, always wash vehicles and flush boat motor engines on grassed areas - this will help keep your lawn alive! Outdoor cleaning of driveways, paved areas, windows, walls and roofs should all be undertaken using buckets only. The restrictions apply to households, businesses and public areas – with Council restricting their watering of parks and public areas also. Bulahdelah's water storages have been topped up, the Karuah River at Stroud is starting to flow again, and Tea Gardens continues to rely on its aquifer supply. Dear News Of The Area, AFTER an horrific bushfire season already for 2019 / 2020, debate rages about whether we should be burning off more regularly or not; who should be responsible for the burning if we do it; when it should be done and so forth. I’m not an expert in these matters, but I have noticed that lots of people talk about Aboriginal burning off of country and how they managed country. So, I found it very interesting to see some relevant comments in one of my favourite books, Robert Dawson’s The Present State of Australia. The book covers a lot of topics, but part is about a trip he did in November 1826 from Port Stephens to Gloucester and back. Dawson was the first CEO of The Australian Agricultural Company and he took a group of Aboriginal men, some convicts and some horses. He was looking for farming land as he went and he quickly observed that he was travelling through what looked to be areas of beautifully maintained gentlemen’s estates followed by pretty rough country and then estate land again. At one point, he says: “The country as we proceeded, for the first two miles, was truly beautiful: it was thinly studded with single trees, as if planted for ornament. It is impossible therefore to pass through such a country as I am now describing, without being perpetually reminded of a gentleman’s park and grounds. (Pages 108 & 109)” Dawson himself doesn’t attribute the beauty of the country to the work of man, but it isn’t long before he and his party meet some of the ‘myall blacks’ of the district (around Stroud). One of the first signs of their presence was the burning (it is November). “.... we saw the grass had all been burnt before us as far as the eye could reach, and so recently that the dead trees and logs of wood, which always lie scattered in abundance were still smoking. ..... in a few minutes he he discovered numerous footsteps of men and children on the burnt ground. Page 119)” Later, as Dawson turned away from what is now known as Gloucester towards home and Port Stephens, he looks around and says: “I observed in every quarter clouds of smoke rising from the grass which had been accidentally set on fire by the natives. (Page 209)” Bear in mind, that Dawson was writing in 1826 which makes his observations pretty noteworthy. This was so early in the contact between Europeans and Aboriginal people that although these ‘Myall blacks’ people had some metal axe heads, they had never seen a horse before and were more interested in the horses than the Europeans. “The wild natives of the forest showed more curiosity as to our horses than they did about us. They had evidently never seen one before, and had never heard of the existence of such an animal. (Page 135)” So, I make no comment about the burning off of country and its effectiveness, but I reckon I can say that it was a long held practice before Europeans arrived and it would have been a lot easier when the responsibility for land wasn’t complicated by the thousands of ownership claims that we now place upon it. Dear Jasminda,

OPINION

Give and take

Dear News Of The Area,

‘VISITORS’ to our towns can be annoying but they are also our ‘bread and butter’. So there is a need to treat them decently, if not well. Personally, I found this year’s bunch of ‘visitors’ really good, thoughtful and considerate (with the exception of some who just don’t know how to park legally!). But it doesn’t take many ‘disagreeables’ to tarnish our reputation and leave a nasty taste. My children, and their children, come up and rent annually because they love what this area can offer. Sadly, their experiences with ‘locals’ weren’t so good this summer.

For example, one lot had their cricket ball taken by a resident. Now I know there are two sides to every story so I tried to find out both versions. One side said the ball landed by a car tyre, the other said the ball hit the car. One side said they were yelled at for being too noisy and stopping people sleeping (mid-afternoon). The other side said the children were very aggressive when asking for the ball’s return. The ball was never returned. I believe it was put into the rubbish bin. Give and take is usually the best way to live harmoniously - but ‘take‘- could also be considered theft. Leigh Allen Hawks Nest

Time limits on Jetties

Dear News Of The Area,

I’M referring to the letter from Jeff Schionning which was published in Nota 2 weeks ago in regard to the usage changes of Tea Gardens Jetties. Would we as the boating public not have the right at least to know from the Council how many people complain to make it necessary to impose the new time limit use of only 2 hours? As a boat owner who is on the water every few days, and drives down Marine Parade at least every second day, I cannot help noticing how underutilised the public Jetties in Tea Gardens are. An investment of

Hawks Nest in March-April with the draft plans. This will be an opportunity for you to review the design options and make comments. Koran North Engagement Officer MidCoast Council

OPINION $100’s of thousands , now even less used due to the recently imposed time limits which is also detrimental to local business. There should be no time limits during normal week days out of school holiday times, same as the parking in the launching ramp areas which allows no cars without trailers over weekends and school holiday periods. I think this could be a good compromise, leaving the jetty use during normal week days free without time limits (or at least with a limit of 24 hours)for use by the local residents and visitors alike. I feel all boat owners who feel the same should lobby with the Council for this. Goetz Schraer

My dog is 14 and has a growth on her stomach. It is going to cost me about $1,000 in vet bills, which I do have, but I was putting it aside for a cruise. I sort of feel he's had a good life anyway. I'm thinking of 'sending him to the farm' if you know what I mean. My wife doesn't understand. Dear Mr TK,

Mr TK,

Mr TK, you are asking the wrong person here. My kids actually tell me that our dog is the favourite child, and I very rarely correct them. I mean, a dog's love cannot be replicated. A spouse or child is never going to greet you with the exhuberence that the family dog exhibits. Ever. Dogs curl up on your lap on cold evenings. They tuck their head under your arm when you are feeling sad. They keep you company on long walks. They don't answer back. They never complain about leftovers. A dog gives unconditional love, Mr TK. Unconditional. And you, in return, must give it back. If the dog was in considerable pain, or untreatable, then of course you would follow your vet's advice, but in this case it sounds as though all you are thinking about is your sun lounge and a few Pina Coladas. What sort of person are you? I think your wife should go on a cruise and your share of the money should go towards your furry friend. That's what I think. If you do take 'the farm' option, your wife will never forgive you. Then your life won't be worth living either. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Appreciation of community support for local Rural Fire Brigade heartfelt

“Executive committee members will hold an Extraordinary meeting next week to decipher the best options going forward in prioritizing spending on equipment and training facilities, as multiple community donations have been accepted with gratitude from local groups, Clubs and individuals alike," PTGRFB Captain Dave Bright said. Dave said, “The amount of money donated is exceptional, amazing and well received however this current fresh batch of volunteers undergoing training is priceless." Basic Training practical exams for this new batch of eight trainees will be held in late March. These new volunteer recruits given support and ongoing training will then compliment and relieve some pressure from current experienced and dedicated active firefighting crews. At the meeting it was decided to facilitate a Community Sausage Sizzle as a thank you and sign of the Brigades heartfelt appreciation to be held in April 2020 (TBA).

By Sandra CLARK GENERAL monthly meeting of Pindimar / Tea Gardens Rural Fire Brigade (PTGRFB) held Tuesday 4 February concluded with a minute's silence to remember those volunteer members and citizens lost to us in fire season 2019/20. Ultimately preservation of life and safety is first and foremost, then property protection. These principals are the order of the day for volunteer firefighters here in Pindimar / Tea Gardens with a seasonal mix of ignitions caused by lightning strikes, vehicle MVA's and then unfortunately awareness of the arsonist element.

Open and working hard, week one at Tea Gardens Public School By Sandra MURRAY

“WORKING hard and open for business,” stated Mr Mark Clemson, the Principal of the Tea Gardens Public School who is describing the first week of term one. This week, 23 new students started school, including 5 year old Sarah Selby, the youngest of three sisters who now all attend the local school. “I like my friends and the canteen,” Sarah told NOTA while she was being enthusiastically shown around the school by her big sisters, Lily (8

years old) and Emily (6 years old). A priority this year is student wellbeing which involves everyone building a positive, inclusive and collaborative school culture underpinned by the values of safety, respect and personal best. Mark Clemson informed NOTA that, “Wellbeing is important, together with ensuring that our education and teaching services are evidence-based. This all has a lasting and positive impact on our students.”. In school sports, the first event for 2020 is the local swimming Carnival on 5 February,

Recovery Op for Containers FROM Page 1

The project team from AMSA, NSW Roads and Maritime Services and Ardent Salvage who are contracted to recover 60 identified containers of the 81 that went overboard, five have already been recovered with another sixteen yet to be located, were on hand to update the community and take questions. Scott said, “AMSA is committed to get these containers out of the environment and make the ocean bed cleaner than what it is now.” Commencing late March 2020 Ardent will be using a purpose designed offshore salvage vessel, MV Pride complete with two cranes and two remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROUV) which will provide guidance required to firstly manage crane wires, cut drainage holes and pick up any loose debris. A custom-made metal basket just larger than a container will be used to hold each container, intact or broken whilst being hauled to the surface. Drew Shannon from Ardent said, “Each

container is drained of water, thoroughly washed down of any barnacles before being brought on board and then processed, recycling is then carried out with as much of the material as possible. It is our intention to leave no debris and bring no further harm.” Ardent have a wealth of experience in underwater salvage; their last job involved picking up 145 containers off the Dutch coast. The cost of this clean-up project is estimated at $15.6 million being paid for by AMSA to get the job done, with AMSA then looking to Yang Ming, the ship’s owners to meet those costs. Early Sunday morning 9 February AMSA arrested the YM Eternity sister ship to YM Efficiency at Port Botany after it petitioned the Court to recover the outstanding debt. The arrest of YM Eternity showed the Marine Authority would not allow International shipping companies to pollute Australian waters without consequence. Residents identifying debris that may be from containers on the foreshore are encouraged to report on 13 12 36.

Wildlife In Need of Care boost to coffers

THIS week our area’s hard-working and desperately under-funded not-for-profit rescue group Wildlife In Need of Care (WINC) has received a boost to its coffers, thanks to the Galleries in the Gardens (GIG) art group and its followers. “I’m delighted to advise that our Cool Summer January raffle and associated donations have raised a total of $1,374, all of which we’ve passed onto WINC,” says GIG president Lesly Stevenson. “Our grateful thanks to everyone who dropped into The Gallery and bought tickets or donated – or

both!” Three lucky people won prizes in the raffle. Jane Shannon from Molong, NSW, was first drawn in the raffle, and she chose GIG artist Emilie Tserontis’ wonderful painting as her prize. Next was Margaret Hutchison, who had the enviable task of managing the giant gourmet food hamper back to her Tea Gardens home. And third drawn was a gentleman named Stephen from North Rocks. His prize was the antique silver lidded platter.

Wipes stop pipes

MIDCOAST Council is urging residents to stop flushing so-called ‘flushable’ wipes down the toilet as blockages seriously affect the sewage system. It’s a confronting photo – but this is the result of using so-called ‘flushable’ wipes as part of your toilet routine. “Despite these wipes being advertised as ‘flushable’, there are no wipes that are suitable for flushing down the toilet,” said Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Mr Rob Scott. “This image shows a blockage of one of our sewer pumps, because of wipes being flushed down the toilet. A blockage can effectively shut down the movement of sewage through the system and is a serious problem.” Council staff have to hoist the pump out of the ground from depths of up to 10 metres, and then remove the ‘choke’ manually. Apart from being a disgusting job, it’s expensive and time consuming. “Normal maintenance includes our staff checking sewer pumps about once a fortnight – there’s normally just a hose-off of domestic fat residue required. But recently, we’ve been deploying staff every second day to some pump locations to remove blockages due to people flushing wipes, sanitary items and sometimes nappies down the toilet.” Recently several pipe blockages have occurred at Wingham, Tallwoods and Tuncurry, with wipes being the major problem. Unlike toilet paper, wipes do not disintegrate in water. They stay pretty much intact as they travel through the sewer pipes and can get caught on other debris. This increases the likelihood of a blockage in the sewer pipes which can cause costly damage to pumps or lead to sewer overflows – which have the potential to impact on the environment. The best advice is to throw away any cleaning/disinfecting wipes, moist towelettes,

Wingham Pump Station.

MIDCOAST Council’s land-use planners will host drop-in sessions in key locations during February and March, to check in with communities on a series of land use zoning changes being proposed in the region’s urban centres. The drop-in consultation is designed to help locals understand what zones currently apply to their properties, and to secure community feedback relating to proposed changes in residential, employment and recreational areas. “We understand that many people zone out when we talk about town planning, zoning and planning controls”, explained Paul De Szell, MidCoast Council’s Director of Liveable Communities. “But once in place, these controls directly impact what an area looks like, from what types of activities can be undertaken, to the size of lots and the height of buildings”. The key message during this checkin phase is that while not all zones are changing, it’s important for people to understand the planning controls that apply, or could apply in the future, in the zones where they live, shop, work and play. Feedback collated in this phase will inform the development of draft plans, which will be placed on exhibition during a second phase, before being finalised and implemented. Addressing urban zoning is part of a much larger project to develop a clear, consistent planning framework that will guide the way land use is managed across the entire MidCoast region. Rural zoning will be looked at in a separate stage to be undertaken later this year. “The end result will be a simpler, more contemporary set of controls to replace the three we’re currently working from, and as well as catering for the needs of our communities into the future, we’ll also be

Binning disposable wipes is an easy way to protect our sewer system, our environment and prevent unnecessary trouble. Be aware that by binning the products, you are contributing to landfill waste – and that also is not good for our environment – and contributes to the NSW Government’s Waste Levy that ratepayers pay on all landfill waste. “It’s really a case of old fashioned toilet habits are best – avoid new flushable wipe products if you can. Bridge Club commentary By Sally HUNTER Hawks Nest Bridge Club IN Bridge, we celebrate those couples that frequently win at Bridge, as well as those that win less frequently. Two relatively new players were the Handicap Winners on Monday 27th January, Elizabeth Buckpitt and Carol Lance. Congratulations to them both on their performance. Another notable result this fortnight was that of Sue Donohue and Roy Song who were the N/S winners on Friday 31st January with a remarkable score of over 69%. Congratulations to them both. In duplicate bridge all couples sitting N/S play against one another and all couples sitting E/W compete against each other, playing the same hands of cards successively against different couples. The couple that plays the hand the best gets the maximum points (i.e. potentially 100% for that hand). Generally it is considered excellent to score above 60% overall and the majority of players score between 40% and 60%. Hence a score of 69% is noteworthy. Great to see a number of spectators enjoying the bowls. Dale's team took an early lead but by the 8th end they were behind by 5 shots. By the 10th end it was 10 all. Once again Kayelene's team slowly gained the lead by the 19th end they were 2 shots ahead. They went into the 21st end holding 4 shots, still could be anyone's game. On the last end the Umpire

was called to do a short measure, the Jack was closely surrounded by bowls from both teams. The decision gave a win to Robyn, Liv, Lynne and Kayelene 21 v 15. Great bowling by all and a great effort by Liv Everingham a very "new bowler" participating in her first Championship. Thanks to Kathie Rimmer for Umpiring. Social bowls was 3 games of Fours, Lyn Nightingale, Judi Polak, Maureen Campbell, Loretta Baker 17 v Sheila Rattray, Jan Coomer, Jeanette Emmett and Dot Dallas 14. Leona Clissold, Sheril Johnson, Lesley Kibble and Jill McBride defeating Trish Ward, Pam Gilchrist, Christine Fossey and Wendy Jones 20 v 11. Ingrid Luck, Irene Roberts, Robyn Webster and Maynie Roberts thrashed Jean Glover, Lynda Richards, Deyonne Page and Karen McPhie 30 v 11. Winners on the day with the highest margin were Maynie's team. Thanks to the Myall Bistro & Café for donating the raffle prize which was won by Sheril Johnson. Thursday 6th February: Social bowls, a good win to Sandra Leisemann, Francis Betar, Pam Gilchrist and Pat Baker 19 v Jean Glover, Lynda Richards, Deyonne Page and Karen McPhie 9. Liv Everingham, Carol Hayden and Kayelene Pearson 13 v Sue Morris, Dorothy Thompson and Lyn Nightingale 7. Jan Coomer,

NATURE STRIP POLITICS “My house is for sale and I’m really aware of the importance of street appeal. My nature strip looks like a bowling green, but my next door neighbour’s looks like the Amazon jungle. Can I just quietly mow it?”

AAH, navigating the politics of good neighbourly relations can be like tip toeing through a minefield. Well done for understanding the importance of street appeal when listing a property. I thoroughly commend your efforts and sellers such as yourself live in hope that your neighbours will think likewise. But that’s not always the case. Have you chatted with them about perhaps maintaining their strip, even if it’s just for the time you’re on the market? If like many, they drive into the garage and enter their home from there, or by a side entrance and just don’t notice the front, they may be completely unaware that their strip has returned to its natural state. If you haven’t broached the subject, I think you should – explain that it benefits the overall impression of your property which in turn is appealing to buyers. If you sense they can’t really be bothered, why not dangle the sweetener that you’re happy to maintain it for them until you sell. That way you’re not relying on them which can lead to tricky relations if they don’t follow through.

I hope this helps Denise

NOT just a Club, Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving (TGHN SLSC), that excels in keeping people safe on Bennett’s Beach, especially in the recent busy January Holiday period , in Surf Life Competition from Nippers to U/19’’ to Open to Masters at the recent Hunter Branch Surf Lifesaving Championships and now away from Bennett’s Beach making a difference in the community. The recent achievements of the Club and its members have been exceptional both on and off the sand and in and out of the water. Where does one start – most importantly our beach was kept safe in a busy holiday period. In recent Competition the Howarth girls just keep getting better. Amazing achievements of Ella and Sophie at a recent branch carnival. Both girls achieved Gold in the flag and sprint events. At the Hunter Branch Titles there were numerous highlights with Jan Logue competing in flags with all the master’s women, surviving a

missing medals. However, more amazing achievements occurred off the beach which the club and the community and extremely proud off. Hunter Surf Life Saving recently announced TGHN members Cooper Higgins and Ella Howarth as nominees for the 2020 Hunter SLS Junior Lifesaver of Year. The Male & Female winners will be announced at the Hunter Branch Champs on Sunday 9th February at Fingal Beach

couple of rounds to win Gold in her age group. Linda Stubbs has become a flag specialist getting to the last round and also winning Gold in her age group. Tony Logue, not to be outdone by the ladies, won Gold in the beach flags and the sprint. Sharon, in extremely choppy and tough conditions won silver in the swim. In the Boat Section the U/19’s came away with a Bronze while the Open Men and Women’s Crews both made the final narrowly

SLSC. If successful Cooper and Elia will then head to Sydney in April for the 2020 SLS NSW JLOTY camp and go up against the rest of the state for the NSW JLOTY title The Club is extremely proud of what Cooper and Elia are doing but also proud of all the clubs Youth who are doing amazing things on the beach and in the community. Nothing has illustrated that more than the recent bushfire fundraiser organised by Cooper and Ella with the

assistance of members of TGHN SLSC, and our Regional Bank- BBQ Cookers Geoff & Julie. After a great day of “BBQ”ing, the club raised over $4100 to give to our local Pindimar/ Tea Gardens RFS. Thank you to everyone that came and helped out and donated things along the way. Look what happens when a community comes together. As part of this Surf Club initiative there was also the raising of water to be donated to Merriwa Rotary Club –

TGHN SLSC Juniors with members of the local Pindimar/ Tea Gardens RFS at the recent fundraiser

“From Surf to Bush “. Merriwa Rotary Club felt privileged to have been donated 10 pallet loads of water for distribution to the drought affected community. This was only possible with the amazing donations from business’s, family and friends. When the club had this idea they thought they would load up the ute. Well they smashed that!!!! Thanks to Tolsaf Cranes for the truck to make the delivery possible. It’s hard to fathom when you come into town as the area looks so green with the little bit of rain they have had over the past week or so, but the rivers are dry, the creeks are dry, the dams are empty, water tanks are empty. Locals told club members when they got here that their Dam has been dry for 5 years. And then the activity continues this month with Nippers returning on the 15th February for a Championship round and the Boat Section looking to compete at the Battle of the Boats at Pacific Palms in on the weekend of the 22nd
