Rescued Horses Healing Humans By Marian SAMPSON JUST up the road from Bulahdelah you’ll find a unique property full of very much loved rescue animals. Maggie’s Farm and Sanctuary is home to rescued horses, goats, dogs, cats and even chickens. The horses are mostly ex-race thoroughbreds, who for one reason or another needed homes. There’s horses on the farm that have never been ridden nor have they had a bit in their mouths, of course the ex-racehorses are a different story. These horses are magnificent to see, living as a herd, interacting calmly with people. At this little slice of paradise these rescued

animals have found love, and are now giving love back to humans. Maggie’s Farm and Sanctuary , named after the first rescue that came to the family, Maggie the dog, delivers healing workshops for people living with stress. The Healing with Horses workshops see people mix in the paddocks with the resident horse family at Maggie’s Farm and Sanctuary who are calmly grazing, gently emanating their magnificent energy and sense of calm. The horses will choose to come and stand by participants, offering their very subtle assistance in whatever manner that feels right.

She believes that the benefits for clients can include improved wellbeing, individual empowerment and a healthier way of living. “Combine that with saving the life of an animal and you have a powerful combination that delivers wonderful outcomes,” she said. FOR more than a decade, Myall Fitness, with Ann Woods at the helm, has been doing its best to keep its members fit and healthy. As a qualified Instructor, Ann has offered the community a huge array of fitness machines, classes and personal programs at her gym in the Tea Gardens Industrial Estate. But the time has come, said Ann, to call it a day. “After nearly 11 years, I feel it’s time to retire,” Ann said. Ann is putting the Gym on the market and she’s hoping to sell it as a going-concern. “I think it would be a huge shame if we can’t keep this for the town, I have around 90 members and they would really miss this if the Gym went,” Ann said. “It’s been very satisfying to see people make progress and I would like to think that we’ve provided people with the information to empower them to be responsible for their own health.” Some of her members have been going to the Gym since it first opened. Ann’s still holding plenty of classes, and the gym is open seven days a week, the doors opening at 6am, with a siesta over the midday period and reopening again in the afternoon until 7pm. As for Ann, when the time is right, she’s going to hit the Grey Nomad Trail, a visit to the Great Barrier Reef long overdue. Myall Fitness is open 7 days a week and can be contacted on 4997 1960.

It provides a more reliable source of sand that is readily available when required and is a cheaper option than trucking sand. Thanks to the joint funding arrangement, the construction of the sand transfer system was commenced in July 2018. “All beaches are unique, and while the sand transfer system is the best management option for Jimmys Beach, it may not be suitable for other eroding beaches on the MidCoast” said Andrew.

Motorfest attracts big crowds Hundreds of people flocked to the Hawks Nest Oval last Saturday for the annual Motorfest extravaganza.
By Margie TIERNEY
HUNDREDS of people flocked to the Hawks Nest Oval last Saturday for the annual Motorfest extravaganza. Now in its 17th year, Motorfest lured 380 vehicles and their proud owners to the park. “We had 16 categories for the vehicles, President’s Choice, the People’s choice, among the awards,” President of the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Motor Club, Juergen Seil said. One of the great things about Motorfest is that it attracts lovers of cars and bikes from all backgrounds and ages. The ‘Best Display’ award went to 21 year old Tiffany Reardon from Nabiac for her stunning 1973 bright pink VW ‘Beetle’. “Tiffany has had ‘Lu Lu’ since she was 14 and did all the work herself,” Tiffany’s sister, Carmen said. As locals and visitors wandered around the vast array of vintage cars and bikes, another standout was Brendan Wagner’s bright yellow Goggomobil. “I’ve owned it for about 14 years and found it abandoned at an old house in Belmore in Sydney,” Brendan said. From a very sad looking neglected
1960‘Dart’, faded red in colour and buried under a load of rubbish, Brendan now turns heads when he dons his yellow helmet and takes to the road in his matching micromobile. Motorfest not only brings thousands of people to the Myall, but it also provides a myriad of stories. Peter Hesse, President of the 48 and FJ Holden Motor Club from Sydney said, “The Black one’s been to Perth three times, and all the cars get out at least once a month.” Peter said he’s heard many a story about ‘The Back Seat of my Holden’, none that he can repeat, while for many of the Club members, their love of Holden is a generational thing. “My Dad had an FJ and he sold it to a squash buddy for $20 in 1970, which broke my heart,” Robert Shaw said. “The good thing is that he bought another one in the early 80’s,” Robert said. Another bonus from Motorfest are the many local community groups that benefit from the day, the Red Cross, the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club, the Rural Fire Service and the local Clinic Bus. But if you missed it last Saturday, Motorfest will be back again next year, the date already set down for March 14, 2020.

THE Marine Parks Association is holding a presentation about the proposed listing of the ‘Port Stephens, Great Lakes World Heritage Estuary’. The event is being held in the Hawks Nest Community Hall on Thursday 14 March starting at 7pm. There will be a host of speakers and questions raised surrounding the proposal and the effects of being listed as ‘world heritage’. Gordon Grainger from the Myall River Goldstar Crossword 17580 Action Group said, “The Myall Lakes area is 1 2 3 4 5 already a world renowned National Park and previous enquiries 8informed us that “nothing would change”. 9 “The obvious response is ‘why 10 change?” He added, “Perhaps it is an introduction to imposing further restrictions to boating and 11 recreational activities within the zone.”

the issue is not everyone uses the same base definitions. First base for some may be hand-holding. For others it may be kissing. As you progress, there is a serious danger of sliding off the base altogether – in fact being completely debased. Now, to the second matter. Your dating profile. You’ve said you Palindrome wanted to ‘date’ likePuzzle in the ‘1960s’. Mr TK, I don’t know how much time you’ve spent in the 1960s, but it wasn’t called the Swinging 60s for nothing. I had to question some people who had dated in that era and they told me it was a veritable hotbed of hedonism and debauchery. A time when fashion, writing, art, music, and the very closely related concept of sexual freedom flourished. A time when Nina Simone was singing about wanting a Solutions little sugar in her bowl, Zeppelin was howling about a whole lotta love and Aretha was feeling like a natural woman (she wasn’t singing about quinoa here, Mr TK). Why not try meeting women in different places, like the school gate? Those ones will be too emotionally and physically exhausted to want anything more than a Bex and a good lie down. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

LOCALS gathered in the Tea Gardens Baptist Church last Thursday for the second ‘Meet the Candidates’ evening, this time, with the Liberals Jaimie Abbott in the hot seat. Organised by the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association, the ‘Q and A’ type format was moderated by Len Roberts, who asked a raft of questions supplied to him by the community. Ms Abbott, spoke about her former career GOL100 in the Air Force and about becoming a firsttime mum late last year. She was also able to announce that the Primary Industries Minister Niall Blair had, just that afternoon, declared a major review into the Port Stephens Great Lakes Marine Park situation if the Coalition Government is re-elected on March 23. 6 MARCH The heat returned today but a light sea breeze assisted the comfort of 47 bowlers competing in the Wednesday Nominated Triples competition. The winners today came from the second game on the synthetic green where, Bob Weir, Col Amos and Mark Hair recorded a +23. On the grass green the team of; Rob Young, Ross Barry and Danny Johnson were the winners with a score of 19. The lucky draw going to Col Walton and Greg Smith! 9 March It is somewhat ironic that after nearly 6 months of dry that afternoon storms were predicted for the first round of the Newcastle District Pennant competition. The predictions were accurate with the First State National Grade 4 game being washed out at Karuah. It might have been an
omen as all teams were trailing Karuah when rain stopped play. At home the Grade 6 players were challenging the Wallsend Diggers side but were forced from the green due to lightening. The rain soon followed and play called off. Two Grade 6 teams were in front before the break. Grade 7 playing away at Wallsend managed to complete their match, with the exception of 1 end, before torrential rain ceased play. Grade 7 this year is composed of some seasoned players combining with some Pennant ‘rookies. Winning away is never easy but the Grade 7 side managed the feat winning 55-51 and taking 9 out of the 10 points on offer. Well done! 10 March The final of the Club Minor Singles was played today in perfect sunshine. Col Saillard was taking on Ron Rowe. Col maybe graded as a grade 4 player and Ron a

TUESDAY 5th March: Social bowls plus another Round of the Club Championship Major Singles. Results of the Championship are as follows, Jeanette Emmett took the lead from the beginning of her game against Dale Winter, winning on the 21st end 25 v 10. A tough battle between Robyn Beaumont and Kayelene Pearson. Robyn started strongly and held a 10 shot lead on the completion of the 18th end but Kayelene made a brilliant come back and lost by just 3 shots on the 29th end 25 v 22. A very close game between Karen McPhie and Jean Glover, equal scores on 5 of the 31 ends bowled. At the start of the 28th end they were 21 all, then Jean gained the lead by 1 but Karen wasn’t giving up and amassed 5 shots over the next 3 end, winning 26 v 22. Bev Rhodes and Pam Gilchrist were 6 all on the 7th end, but Pam failed to add to her tally for the next 7 ends while Bev shot ahead by 12 points. Bev stayed in the lead for the remainder of the match ending on the 22nd end Bev 26 v Pam 13. Great bowling by all competitors and many thanks to Francis Betar for Umpiring, Jo Younghusband Controlling Body and the Markers. Social bowls was a game of Fours and a game of Triples. grade 7 but the difference was not that apparent in the quality of the match these two players produced. Maybe it was the metronomic delivery that Colin has that might have been the difference but all agreed that some very fine bowls were played today with Colin taking the title 31-18. Congratulations to all the players who competed. This title is proving each year that it is very hard to win. In other news; The Club Pairs nominations sheet is on the board and already 14 teams have entered, this event will close 15th March and the first game Sunday 24th. On Sunday 17th March our Club will host 25 visiting bowlers. They will join our Sunday bowlers but we need our regular players to equal the numbers. The game will start at 9.30am preceded by an egg and bacon roll breakfast.
v 9. A big victory also for Dawn May, Dawn Jones and Ingrid Luck 28 v Beverly Thrift, Judi Polak and Sheril Johnson 7. The winners on the day, (winning with the lowest margin) were Sandra, Robyn/Dot, Maynie and Pat. Judi Polak was the very lucky winner of the raffle, many thanks to the Myall Bistro and Café for their donation of the raffle prize. Birthday greetings for Pat Baker and a very special “0” birthday for Bev Stephens. Thursday 7th March: The Quarter Finals of the Major Singles, although for a couple of bowlers their first bowl in this event due to byes and forfeits. Karen McPhie defeated Robyn Beaumont after 27 ends, 27 v 18. Lynne Green took an early lead against Jeanette Emmett but on the 16th end they were 14 all. Lynne winning on the 23rd end 26 v 17. Maynie Roberts won on the 16th end against Sandra Leisemann 25 v 7. Lynda Richards and Bev Rhodes had a mammoth contest on rink 5, 35 ends bowled before Lynda reached the magic number, 25 winning by just 3 shots. I have to say all spectators commented on the high standard of all the bowling. Thanks to the Markers, Pat Baker for Umpiring and Jo Younghusband for being the Controlling Body. A date is still to be determined for the Semi Final and Final of the Major Singles due to our bowlers being involved with District events and Pennants. The Semi Finals games will be Maynie Roberts v Lynda Richards and Lynne Green v Karen McPhie.

PLAYERS from 37 clubs from around the State converged on the Hawks Nest Golf Club last week for the annual Ladies Classic Tournament. In all, 256 players teed off over the two day Classic, the tournament now in its 33rd year. “In 1985 the local lady associates of the Golf Club, as they were then known then, thought it would be a great idea to hold a Ladies Golf Game during the Prawn Festival,” President Elsa Jones said. From small beginnings with just 39 players, and played over 9 holes, the Classic is now at its capacity. “We just couldn’t have any more ladies on the course,” Elsa said. “The course was in fantastic condition, that’s why the ladies love coming here.”
