By Margie TIERNEY FOR the past couple of years, members of the Quilting Group at the Myall Community Arts and Craft Centre have been busy stitching and sewing creations for their upcoming long weekend of “Quilts by the Myall”. The Quilt Show tradition dates back more than a quarter of a century, long before the Craft Centre moved to its current location behind the Visitors Centre in Tea Gardens. Maryanne Durrant told News Of The Area, “We haven’t had a show for four years, so all our quilts haven’t been seen before.”

But with around 18,000 pre poll and postal votes still left to count, it will be at least a week before the final results are known. Len said, “It will all come down to preferences.” Early results indicate many voters remained loyal to their former Council areas. Len topped the polls in the Myall Coast Region, securing a combined total of 45 percent of all first preference votes cast at Bulahdelah, Hawks Nest, North Arm Cove and Tea Gardens polling places. Len also polled consistently across the Forster/Tuncurry booths.

Ungrouped local candidate, Malcolm Motum, received 14 percent of first preference votes from Hawks Nest and 16 percent from Tea Gardens. The Labor group pulled consistent results across the board, topping the polls based on first preference votes counted so far. Jan McWilliams scored strongly at

Forster polling places, and as expected, former Taree Councillors Brad Christensen, Peter Epov and Kathryn Bell dominated at the Taree booths. Securing local representation for Gloucester residents was always going to be a challenge, given the population of the former shire. Former Deputy Mayor, Katheryn Smith,

campaigned hard across the entire MidCoast region and topped the Gloucester polls, but will need to wait and see if preferences will get her over the line. FEDERAL Member for Lyne, Dr David Gillespie dropped into Tea Gardens recently to check out first-hand the benefits of a $25,000 grant from the Turnbull Government. After attending the Peter Sinclair Gardens official opening, Dr Gillespie headed across to Anzac Park to see one of three brand new shiny bubblers complete with a dog bowl which now grace Marine Drive. The grant was also used to provide another covered seating shelter near Hook ’n Cook and cycle racks along Marine Drive. The Myall River Foreshore Group and MidCoast Council were all involved in the project. It was also a chance for News Of The Area to catch up with the Assistant Health Minister on a number of issues. The High Court action

involving his ownership of a retail store housing an Australia Post franchise in Port Macquarie is still ongoing. “Further directions should be coming up within the next month,” Dr Gillespie said News Of The Area also asked Dr Gillespie if he had checked his family heritage given the controversy surrounding so many Federal MPs. Dr Gillespie said with a laugh, “I go all the way back to the Second Fleet, back in the 1830s there was an Irish soldier and the other side are English convicts, I think I’m good.” Dr Gillespie then headed off to a meet and greet with around 40 locals at the Tea Gardens Baptist Church. ‘We call them listening posts and I will continue to do them across the region on regular basis.”

In the case of Estate of Madeline Cozma v Milstern Retirement Living Pty Ltd t/as Golden Lifestyles [2016] NSWCATCD 56 a retirement village resident died in 2005. Arrangements were made to sell the deceased’s legal interest in the village (she held a long lease in a unit at the time of her death) and the executors of the deceased’s estate agreed with an agent to market the unit. Initially, the agent was linked with the village operator. After 10 years the unit remained unsold. Nevertheless, the village operator claimed recurrent charges and departure fees so that the debt owed to the village operator after 10 years had grown to $160,000.00. The NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal found as a matter of law that the operator could charge the

recurrent fees until the unit was sold ($110,000). However, the Tribunal accepted the evidence from the Executors that no effort had been made to sell the unit, that the agent had failed to effectively market and promote the sale and failed to co-operate with an independent agent appointed in 2011. As a result, the Tribunal ordered that the departure fee be limited to 10% of the sale price being the percentage of the sale price the village operator would have been entitled to had the unit been sold within one year of the resident’s death. The important lesson here is to understand how recurrent charges apply before signing a contract for entry into a village and also how the property will be marketed on departure.

WITH the weather warming up and spring flowers blooming, the familiar buzz of backyard bees is back. “The warmer weather is certainly good for bees because it is nature at its best,” local beekeeper Gary Haynes said. “All the spring flowers are coming out and the bushes are starting to come alive, and in a couple of weeks the honey will start and come in.” Gary said it is common to hear swarms rustling at this time of the year, as the bees are attracted to “any flower that produces a nectar or a strong scent”.

“They have a very strong liking for the residue that English Elms produce, clover flowers and all the other garden flowers,” he said. “It is also about pollinating the flowering plants and trees, even fruits and vegetables, which keeps the life cycle going.” Gary has been producing honey in Bulahdelah for the past 30 years, which is wellknown for its quality. “In the west where there are a lot of weeds like thistles, they produce quite aromatic-type flavours,” Gary told News Of The Area. “We are a little bit different; coastal honey has a medium amber

FOR many years, the vast majority of koala sightings reported on our Hotline answering machine (4997 0878) have been in Hawks Nest. In fact, the last confirmed sighting in Tea Gardens was in June 2014 near the Craft Centre. So it was quite a surprise to receive a call late one afternoon recently about a koala scratching at someone’s front door in Willow Circuit in The Grange retirement village. By the time we got there, he had had many photos taken and decamped up a deciduous tree as you can see in the photo – not much food up there. The residents were concerned about what should be done about the big healthy boy. Firstly, we warned that nobody should attempt to pick him up because they have very long sharp claws and need to be handled in a very particular way to avoid injury. Next we assessed whether we should intervene. He appeared to be healthy, was able to climb trees and was quite active. We decided not to create stress by capturing him and to leave him to find his own way out of the village, particularly as we didn’t know where he had actually come from. We left our phone number in case of any concerns but didn’t hear any more, so the strategy obviously worked. This year, koalas may be reacting to the recent long spell of warmer than normal weather during July and August. The males appear to be thinking that spring has arrived and are out looking for a mate. While at the Grange we rang Port Stephens Koalas, our sick and injured koala support group, to confirm our decision not to do anything about our Grange retiree. They advised they are receiving an unusually large number of calls about active koalas, including a recent spike in car hits on the roads. Sadly, in late July, we received a call about a male koala killed on the Pacific Highway at the Tea Gardens turnoff. In late March the radar-activated speed sign asking motorists to “Slow Down” when the 50 kph speed limit is exceeded, stopped working. After many failed attempts to get it working again, including replacing the rechargeable battery inside, the sign maker finally took it away to their factory in Newcastle for repair. In early August the sign came home, apparently with a brand new motherboard. As is usual, there have not been many koala sightings over winter (in fact six) but the numbers are picking up a little in August. We ask the community to report their sighting to us every time you see a koala anywhere in the Myall Coast area. Just phone our koala sightings Hotline answering machine on 4997 0878. Dunedoo Volunteers still in action By Margie TIERNEY AS we head into another bushfire season, it’s well worth noting that a group of volunteers has been working tirelessly in and around Dunedoo since last February’s devastating Sir Ivan blaze, and they’re still there. The Myall Community became involved in the Dunedoo fundraising efforts thanks to the efforts of Pip and Maureen Sullivan who organised a charity bowls day

at the Tea Gardens Country Club along with a number of raffles. “The final raffle for the Sir Ivan Fire was drawn recently at the Annual Dunedoo Deserters Get Together in Newcastle,” Pip told News Of The Area. “The major winner of the raffle, two nights’ accommodation at the Mantra Aqua, Nelson Bay was won by Tea Gardens resident Bill Moon.” “This brings to just on

$7,000 that has been banked into the Dunedoo CWA bushfire appeal account from the Tea Gardens /Hawks Nest area,” Pip said. “This is much more than we ever thought possible and goes to show how generous this community is.” Over the past seven months, more than a thousand volunteers have rebuilt over 700 kilometres of fencing in and around Dunedoo. The local CWA appeal raised more than $400,000. The Sir Ivan blaze claimed 35 homes and an estimated 5,000 head of livestock.

Spring Bundles Delivered By Daniel SAHYOUN

AN abundance of adorable, fluffy baby lambs skipping across the paddocks at Lucy Land Merino Farm, is a definite sign that spring is here. The new season also brings a return of the Great

Lakes Food Trial, with the Bulahdelah Merino farm one of 11 stops along the spring trail. Owner, Julie Steepe, said 25 baby lambs have been born at the property in the last few weeks, including three sets of twins, which have all been affectionately

named. “We have got five more to go, I could even have another set of twins,” she said. The dedicated and ethical farmer has been present at each of the births and has been caring for her growing flock around the clock for the past five weeks.

Julie said the lambs need to feed for a minimum of eight weeks, but like humans, some will feed for much longer. “All the sheep are different, some mothers will feed for another six or eight months, but I still have a three-year-old that I bottle feed,” she said. “One sheep, named

Gentle, has twins every year and she does the bare minimum, she will do the eight weeks and not much more.” Julie said the baby lambs’ wool will grow a little bit each day, and will have a full coat “ready for a haircut” by the time they are 12 months old. Visitors during the Spring Food Trail will be able to explore the farm, feed the lambs and take home some chemical free

and organically grown merino wool. “It is about like minded, ethical producers who are working together to showcase this great region and everything it has to offer,” Julie said. The Great Lakes Spring Food Trail will be held on Sunday 1 October with stops at local farms, wineries and cafes in Bulahdelah, Wootton, Bungwahl and Pacific Palms.

My dad requested no presents on Father’s Day, but I overheard him speaking to Mum in the kitchen about how miserable and tight his kids are and what a miserable Father’s Day he had with no gifts. I’m confused. Miss BW, Soldier Point Dear Miss BW, I USED to ask my dad what he wanted for Father’s Day and he would always say that he just wanted me to be happy. Talk about pressure! Who can live up to that unrealistic expectation? I do, however, think it’s nice to give something that can’t be bought. Next year, you and your siblings could write him a poem. Maybe try a sonnet that expresses your deeply entrenched resentment over the favouritism he shows towards the eldest child (poetry should be angsty). Or how about some slam poetry that unleashes your inner fury about his unrealistic expectations and the way he lives vicariously through his children? Listen to Eminem first to get the right level of paranoia and aggression. Perhaps some free verse that delves into your father’s unhealthy obsession with his dog and your subsequent feelings of inadequacy (a line about how you feel the need to wag your tail or roll on your back to get some attention wouldn’t go astray). These ideas are merely a springboard, Miss BW. Who knows where your creative juices may lead you. I can almost guarantee that the following year he will request a Darrell Lea Dad’s Bag or some socks and undies.

q Bulahdelah Polling Place Manager Meredith Rae with candidate James Hooke. MYALL Coast residents went to the polls last Saturday to elect the first ever group of MidCoast Councillors for the new amalgamated Council. In a hive of activity, candidate supporters in colourful campaign shirts were out in force, handing out how to vote cards and greeting the stream of voters as they arrived at polling places around the region. Although some residents said they experienced long queues, election officials at both Tea Gardens and Bulahdelah said the constant flow of voters during the morning was as expected. “We were very busy midmorning, mainly between 10-11am when the maximum wait in line was about 20 minutes,” the Bulahdelah Polling Place Manager said. “We have had no problems throughout the day, it has all flowed well.” First-time voter, 18-year-

considered an adult and finally having the responsibility to have a say on who will represent us.” Counting at each of the 49 polling places in the MidCoast region commenced directly after the polls closed at 6pm on election night. The Tea Gardens Polling Booth Manager estimated counting the first preference votes would take his team up to three hours to complete. “Once the tallies are run, we phone our count through to the MidCoast Returning Officer in Forster,” he said. The ballot papers will be sent to a central location this week to be entered online and preferences distributed. According to the NSW Electoral Commission, 72,723 people were enrolled to vote in the 2017 MidCoast Council election.

“It adds another level of things to do in the library,” Carol told News Of The Area. “We often have couples come in, whether they be local or tourists, one person might be using the computer, the other can now occupy themselves with finding a piece or two of the puzzle.” The history of the jigsaw puzzle dates back to the 1760s when pictures were painted onto a flat rectangle piece of wood then the picture cut into small pieces with a jigsaw, hence the name. Today’s jigsaw puzzles can come in boxes with thousands of pieces and even the alphabet printed on the back giving clues to where the piece belongs. So next time you happen to pop in the Tea Gardens Library, grab a piece or two and add your touch and expertise. The librarians at Tea Gardens are all about community. Chris Shelly took her love of books to the Spring Fair at Medowie at the weekend to read to the youngsters, in a series of story time sessions. While the children got to rest and listen to some wonderful tales, mums and dads were given the chance to relax and enjoy a great day out, a ‘Fairy Tale’ come true.

Dustbowl Controlled

By Daniel SAHYOUN

RESIDENTS living near the Bulahdelah roadworks will be able to breathe a little easier with MidCoast Council advising that the contractors will now be using a water cart to control the dust. A spokesperson said the cart will be on-site every day until the project is completed. Local resident, Lillian Lee, said the water cart will be welcomed. “We are right on the roadworks and there is so much dust, our whole house is covered in it,” she said. “We certainly hope the water will calm the dirt down a bit.” The program of works, which has been subjected

q

to extensive delays, includes road reconstruction in Stroud Street, upgrading the stormwater system, and installing a roundabout at the Lee Street intersection. The spokesperson said the initial delays were due to wet weather, but further holdups have been caused by poor subgrade (natural ground conditions) discovered during the works. To date, contractors discovered pockets of poor subgrade on the western side of Stroud St and Markwell Road after removing the old road pavement. At Lee Street, the subgrade was found to be a clay with a consistency suitable for use as pottery clay. Council said work to rectify the condition has

caused a four-week delay. Further holdups are currently being experienced due to similar clay conditions found on the eastern side of Stroud St and Markwell Road. In addition, the contractors discovered an eight-metre-long timber bridge buried at the intersection of Lee and Stroud Streets. With the delays factored in, Council estimates the works will be completed “this side of Christmas”. “How far this side is yet to be confirmed,” the spokesperson said. For the residents living along the stretch of road, they are hoping this will be sooner than later. “The contractors start work around 6.30 in the morning and they go all day,”

Julie Hammond summed up her decade at Holiday Coast. “We feel very privileged to be working here.”

Holiday Coast Fiftieth LONG after the major banks shut up shop in the towns of Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens, the Holiday Coast Credit Union has survived and thrived. Last week Holiday Coast celebrated its 50th Anniversary, inviting members to a very special morning tea at its Tea Gardens branch. In this era when so many people chop and change jobs, the women who work at the Credit Union have

That was a decade ago, and the Aged Care Facility that started off as Myall Lodge can now house more than 60 residents. It was a proud day for both Peter and Barry at the official opening of the new wing of Peter Sinclair Gardens. “This new building is wonderful,” Peter said. “It’s great that they [RSL LifeCare] kept their promise and delivered.”

First Taste of Big School By Daniel SAHYOUN

PAINTING, clay modelling and water boats were some of the activities enjoyed by Bulahdelah Central School Kindergarten children when they visited their old friends at preschool last week. The children also had fun playing together in the sandpit and cubby house and took turns on the swing. The visit was the first of many transition activities organised to help make the step to big school a little easier for the children who will be starting Kindergarten in 2018. “It will be fun to have all of them come to school; they can see all the activities we do, the word wall and all the decorations in the room,” kindy student Annabelle Smith said. “I am going to make lots of

new friends and I can’t wait to show them the whole school,” Abbiegail Rae said. As part of the transition program, five orientation days will be held at Bulahdelah Central School next term to help the youngsters settle

into their new learning environment. BCS Assistant Principal, Mrs Carol Wills, said the program is an exciting part of the Term 4 calendar. “It is wonderful to greet our 2018 Kindergarten

THIS Saturday saw the Karuah Roos take on Cardiff Cobras for the fourth time this season with a win each and a draw this was to be the game to decide who takes on the Glendale Gorillas in the Grand Final next week at the number one Sports Ground Newcastle. Cardiff kicked off and the big hits were on for one and all. They were the first to score within the first two and a half minutes to open the scoreboard at 6/0. Cardiff fumbled the ball from the kick off with the Roos’ Adam Crampton gathering it. Captain Sam Croese was in for Karuah, converting his own try to tie the game 6 all. The metre men in the first half for the Roos were Jack Croese, Justin Anderson, Dwayne

Fleming, Ben Feeney, Jordan Cobb, Mitch Napier, Tim Higginbottom, Sam Croese, Alex Simon, Ben Smith, Sean O’Neil, Jake Blanch, Mitch O’Bryan, Darren Weatherall and Kane Chisholme. The Roos were pushing the with big hit ups, with Dwayne Fleming being held up over the line they didn’t give up. With under 10 minutes gone in the first half Jack Croese was over to take the score to 10/6 the Roos way. The Roos were really putting the pressure on the Cobras and it paid off with them dropping the ball over the try line. The next to score was the Cobra’s half way through the first half to take the score to 10 all. Cardiff did not have much luck with catching the kick offs they bombed it again. The big hitters for the Roos in the first half were Jordan Cobb, Adam Crampton, Tim Higginbottom, Mitch O’Bryan, Luke Perry, Matt

Club Mixed Pairs Competition Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA

9 September The semi-finals of the Club Mixed Pairs competition was played today with a tricky wind blowing in from the south. In one match, the team of Jill McBride and Noel Jackson played Verlie Gray and Tom Parkinson and in the other Kaylene and Greg Pearson opposed Bette and Col

Saillard. Verlie and Tom were slow out of the blocks with their challenge beginning at the 6th end when they picked up a 5 and at the halfway mark the teams were locked at 11-11. In a dramatic finish Verlie and Tom powered away over the last 5 ends to post a convincing win 24-13. In the remaining game Bette and Col trailed 5-12 at the halfway mark with the turning point being at the 11th end when they picked

up a 4. Somehow, Kaylene and Greg were stuck on 13 and Bette and Col played some text-book draw bowls winning all the remaining ends and booking a place in the final. They ran out winners 2013. 10 September A nice field of 20 players attended Sunday mixed bowls today. A welcome was extended to a new player, Peter Cheney. The winners were Dianne

Kiss, Mark Nightingale and Dennis Wilberforce. The Lucky losers were Bev Dunn, John Moore, Gary Wynne and Karen McPhie. Cooks were Barry Goode and Ron Webster. The final of the Club Mixed Pairs competition was played today in ideal conditions with super veterans Verlie Gray and Tom Parkinson taking on

the new “kids on the block”, Bette and Col Saillard. Verlie and Tom developed an early lead and it was not until the 10th end that Bette and Col drew level. Consistent draw bowling paid dividends for Bette and Col and they ran out winners 17-12. With a total age of 163 years, Verlie and Tom are

BOWLING inspirational in reaching the finals. A fabulous effort! Congratulations to all the players on a wonderful competition with Bette and Col deserved winners. The organisers would also like to thank John Younghusband for umpiring during the weekend.

Spring Carnival takes lead Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club By Lynda RICHARDS

NOT much bowling on the homefront this week as 16 bowlers were participating in the Newcastle District Spring Carnival which was held on 4, 5 and 7 September and two others were competing in the Champion of Club Champions Pairs from 4 - 7 September. Some ladies did have a “roll up” on Tuesday and Thursday as there was insufficient numbers for social bowls. The District Spring Carnival was well attended,

5 Sections 54 teams in all. Host clubs were Nelson Bay, Lemon Tree Passage, Kotara, Fingal Bay, Raymond Terrace, Adamstown, Soldiers Point, Stockton, Wallsend, Mayfield West, Bar Beach, Heaton Birmingham Gardens, Alder Park, New Lambton and Lambton Park. Format for play Fours 18 ends, 5 games played in total. Weather conditions were not very conducive for bowling with SW winds blowing at 35-40km/hr. Our teams did well against some tough opposition but unfortunately not good enough to bring

home any prizes. The best performers were Karen Green, Pat Baker, Sandra Leisemann and Lynne Green with three wins and two losses. Winners of the Carnival were a team from Edgeworth who won all five of their games. Congratulations to Kayelene Pearson and Robyn Beaumont who excelled at the Champion of Champions Pairs held at Rydalmere Bowling Club. These ladies qualified for this event by winning our Club Championship Pairs in June this year. Kayelene and Robyn

Swells Test Anglers By John SAHYOUN

LAST weekend’s difficult conditions provided a challenge for anglers during Bulahdelah Fishing Club’s final fish of the year. “The conditions were very trying for this outing with big seas and winds, however, plenty of fish have been caught,” Club President Darren Carrall said. “Most people fished at Seal Rocks as you can get out of the heavy winds and swell.” Brett Shultz reeled in a total of 25 fish with a combined weight of 11.5kilograms to win the men’s competition. The runners up were Darren Carrall and BeeJay Freihaut.

www.newsofthearea.com.au

Vanessa Shultz landed 18 fish to claim the women’s title with Mel Smith finishing in second place. The New Biggest Species was a 300gram mullet reeled in by Bushy Carral who also claimed the Mystery Fish prize with his 600gram blackfish. Kerry Wilson, Shane Hoare, Cutter Soars and Grant Bidgood also recorded good catches during the competition. The weekend event brings an end to a successful season for the club. “The Bass Bash was the highlight being our 25th Anniversary,” Darren told News Of The Area. “The Mate Against Mate, Gibber to Gibber and the Mid

Coast Competitions were also really successful.” Although the season is over, Darren said there is still plenty of work to do. “It is getting near bass season again so we will be working on our next Bass Bash,” he said. “We also have a grant for bass fingerlings, so we will be restocking the river later this year.” Darren thanks the committee for making his job “so much easier”. “We also thank the Bulahdelah Bowling Club for their great support and the use of their facilities during the year,” Darren said. The club’s presentation evening will be held later this year.
