Slimmers Celebrate 10th Birthday

Page 14-15

By Margie TIERNEY MEMBERS of the Tea Gardens Slimmers Group have just celebrated an important milestone, their 10th Birthday. Founding member Ellen Foulstone told News Of the Area, “We’d been travelling to Karuah to a slimmers group for years when myself and Lyn Humphries decided to start up a meeting in Tea Gardens.” “We approached the Country Club and they were only too happy to supply a room for us to hold our weigh ins and that was 10 years ago.” “During the years our numbers have fluctuated as have our weights,” Ellen said.

The operation began on August 18, 1966 and ended three days later. 18 Australians were killed and 24 wounded, while Australian official records show that the VC is reported to have lost 245. Literature Awards for 2018 are open THE Port Stephens Literature Awards for 2018 are now open and early entries are most welcome as this gives the judges more time to assess them. Sponsors are Port Stephens Council (PSC), Club Lemon Tree and again the local News Of The Area (NOTA) newspaper are championing these Awards. One of the organisers Suzane Hamilton said, “The top eight stories receive cash prizes totalling $1100 and Certificates of attainment are issued in the various commended sections.” “Volunteer readers do the bulk of the work sifting through the entries and

short listing the top twenty.” “They also award the ‘Readers’ Choice’ award. Three new independent judges then rate them from one to twenty an add up the points to decide the winners, “ Ms Hamilton said. This exhaustive process takes over a month after the closing date of 30 September with winners announced in November. All those receiving prizes will be contacted by phone and listed on a result sheet on www.tilligerry.com Full details of the competition and entry conditions can now be accessed on this website by clicking on ‘Literature Award’ in the left hand green sidebar.

Relaunch of Rivergum

q The Rivergums group with Kate Washington MP at their relaunch.

THE Rivergum Grandparents as Parents Support Group has been relaunched, with local State Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington MP accepting the Group’s offer to become their very first Patron. The Group has reemerged after leaving The Samaritans. “We have moved away and decided to branch out on our own, and we are excited for our new direction,” Secretary Gavin Breen told News Of The Area. “We want to make sure we are supporting each other and the kids we raise, and we are now a fully registered and insured entity as Rivergum Grandparents as Parents Support Group Inc.” As the name suggests, the Group exists to support Grandparents who have taken up the role of parenting their Grandchildren but it is also open to relatives who raise children that are not their own. The Rivergum

Grandparents as Parents Support Group is about being more than a sympathetic ear to those kindred carers to talk to someone who understands their plight, but to also enable outings which can be a great financial burden. The Group endeavours to ensure that advocacy is available to members to deal with the relevant authorities, as well as support at casework meetings. “We have been fundraising quite vigorously to arrange outings for the kids and also for the carers, as the cost can be astronomical,” Gavin said. “It becomes very hard to find the money to treat them to special days out, and we as a group are more than happy to do the necessary work to afford this to them.” If you are raising children who are not your own and would like to know more about what the Rivergum Grandparents as Parents Support Group could do for you, please contact Cheryl on 0411019995 or Gavin on 0413142296.

changing over the books there, and choosing something new. She said, “Some days it may be almost empty when I leave to go home, and then the next morning it is full of books again, so it definitely works and is valued.” “I’ve even found books in there that I’ve taken home to read myself.” Next time you’re in Bulahdelah or Stroud, keep your eye out for the little red libraries. Medowie and Raymond Terrace, we’ll keep you posted on when you will be seeing a Little Street Library in your town soon.

NATIONAL Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. This year, over 1800 events are registered online with activities being held across Australia, with a focus on the crucial role that science plays in supporting Australia’s well-being, improving our health and boosting our prosperity. Australia is home to world-leading scientists, universities and research institutes. Our scientists have been responsible for some of the greatest discoveries of the modern era, from penicillin and the bionic ear to the world’s first artificial pacemaker.. National Science Week is about celebrating these achievements and inspiring Australia’s next generation of scientists.

Science, technology and innovation are key drivers of the Coalition Government’s plan for a stronger economy. They help generate jobs and higher living standards for all Australians. In 2017-18 the Coalition Government invested $10.3 billion in Australia’s research, science and technology capabilities, underscored by a $1.9 billion investment to update our National Research Infrastructure in this year’s budgets. I’d encourage locals, schools and community groups to get on board and celebrate science. There are many opportunities to make exciting discoveries during Science Week. THERE is nothing better on a cold winter’s day than curling up with a good book. But even better if you manage to score yourself a free book. Residents of Stroud and Bulahdelah have been able to treat themselves to a free book at a wonderful little initiative called ‘Little Street Libraries’, and News Of The Area have it on good authority that Medowie and Raymond Terrace might just be next on the list. Little Street Libraries are small bookcases, located somewhere central, where residents can take a book, or leave a book whenever they desire. R & R Property are always seeking unique ways of serving their customers, not just in Real Estate but all aspects of being a valued part of their community. R & R Property began in Stroud and Bulahdelah, but have branched out and now cover all the Mid Coast Council area, Great Lakes and Port Stephens Council areas. When the Managing Director Denise Haynes saw a television show on the ABC

about Little Street Libraries popping up all around Australia she contacted the Street Library company straight away about how to participate in the various communities she is involved with. Denise told News Of The Area, “I saw this as a great way to encourage people to still read and share books.” “We now have two street library locations, one in Stroud and one in Bulahdelah and we are also currently arranging to install one in Medowie and possibly Raymond Terrace in the near future as well.” “We feel that the Little Street Libraries are in a convenient location for the public, are open 24 hours a day and anybody can use them. I mean, how many of us have stacks of books at home that we have already read and they are just going to waste stored away?” she said. “Why not share them with other members of your community?” she added. Denise remarked that she often hears people at their street library nearby remarking on how wonderful it is, and she delights in spying someone

8 AUGUST: The weather was a treat today with 47 players enjoying two great greens playing in the Wednesday Nominated Triples competition. Most teams did not manage to win both their games but four teams managed the feat with the combination of; Tom Parkinson, Graeme Watkins and Noel Jackson again taking the money on 56 points, just edging out the team of; Gary Wynne, John Moore, George Winter and Ron Drake on a count back. Dennis Ashbridge won the much sought after Myall Bistro voucher. The Mattara Festival Pairs were played this week with the Club represented by Col Saillard and Ken Devlin. Col and Ken won all their preliminary matches last Monday at Soldiers Point and with the competition heating up our players went down in the first of the play-off matches played on Tuesday at Cardiff. Our players are great ambassadors for Tea Gardens Country Club Bowling Club and the sport of Lawn Bowls and all at the Club applaud their performance. Well done! 11 August: Bowlers would

have thought they had died and gone to heaven playing today in the Open Friday Pairs. Conditions were beyond perfect, if there is such a thing! The Club welcomed new bowler, Col Walton. Col joined with John Slater to claim bragging rights with a +34 scorecard. 12 August: A cooler morning didn’t make any difference to the 18 bowlers who turned up for Sunday Bowls today. Play for the day was 3 rinks of triples with the winners being determined as the team with the highest score.

SPORT

Col Walton, Beverley Thrift and Julie Kennedy managed that feat. (For a new bowler, Col Walton is already making a name for himself). Once again those fine travelling pair, the cook and the chef, Gary and Noel, did a fine barbecue lunch. In other news: The entry sheet for the Club Mixed Pairs is on the men’s section of the notice board, if you are looking for a partner single entries are welcome and a separate sheet is there for your names both ladies and men.

Karuah Mixed Pairs Deliver Karuah RSL Bowling Club By Trevor DAVIES THE message to the faithful on our Bowls Club Facebook page on Sunday morning reported that, “A big crowd was gathering on the verandah and watching some cracking bowls in the second round of mixed pairs.” “All 3 games were close.” Well the hyperbole was very warranted. Three absolutely fantastic games were in progress and the Club faithful did gather and got to watch some great games. New Club President Sam and his wife Merridee Rees got up in a tightly contested game over Gary and Joan Allerton in the last 3 ends to win 23/17.

Jason and Olive got up over Gordon and Robyn Latimore by 1 shot on the last end to win 21/20 in a cliffhanger. In the last game to finish Kerry and Henk Faber played some of their best ever bowls to get up by 1 shot having needed 2 on the last end and getting up 20/21 over a gallant Irene and Mark Wilkie. The big crowd watching stayed to the end and cheered the high quality bowls all the way. The RSL Club announcer even paused the monster Saturday raffle results to tell the clubs patrons that family feuds were in progress out on the greens and the crowd flowed outside to watch. Email Jasminda: edit@mcnota.com.au

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from readers throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb.

WE are being provided an opportunity to indicate to Midcoast Council that Ratepayers and Residents are willing and should be invited to contribute to issues that affect our community. On this coming Friday, at 2 locations in the region, Forums have been scheduled for citizens to have their say on one such current issue – the regional Tourism Destination name. The number of people who attend these forums will serve to indicate to Midcoast Council, also in regard to future issues, the community desire and deserve the right to be heard and their input addressed. I hope Midcoast Council wisely decides to abandon the push for ‘Barrington’, and agrees to then seek a name complimenting all our naturally amazing, diverse region, that abounds with majestic beaches, lakes, mountains, rivers, valleys & more. My suggestion Majestic MidCoast.

Dear Jasminda,

What is the go with supermarkets banning plastic bags and then giving away plastic grocery replicas? I don’t get it. Mrs KG, Tea Gardens Dear Mrs KG, YOU know, I’m a bit behind the eight ball, so I logged on to one of those community swap sites that I’ve never been game to peruse before because I thought they were a platform for toey swingers swapping their partners, and what I found was even more alarming. I actually pondered whether there was some sort of preWorld War III ration battle going on, such was the intensity of product swapping out there in suburbia. There were comments like: ‘I’ll give you pasta sauce for the Messy Monkeys” and “Not sure where you are, but I have Oak Milk and need dog food”. What the fricken’ frick is going on? Are we on The Truman Show? Have we entered some sort of parallel universe? Is there a Prozac shortage happening that I don’t know about that is making household shoppers completely bat shit crazy? We have a little global issue at the moment known as CIDEAH. Haven’t heard of it? Let me enlighten you. Complete and Irreversible Destruction of the Environment by Apathetic Humans. In case you think this is just Jasminda going off on a pre-wine whine, stop listening to bogan radio and try this from the United Nations: “We are on the edge of a plastic calamity.” Calamity isn’t a word that the UN throws around lightly. Not convinced? How about washed-up whales choked with plastic? So, Mrs KG, I’m with you. The competing argument is: “But there’s so much plastic out there already. Why take it out on little plastic groceries?” That is a pathetic argument. It’s like saying it’s okay to hit people because there’s so much violence in the world already.
