Young Endeavour Award for Tea Gardens' Teenager By Margie TIERNEY
q
SIXTEEN year-old Blake Richardson has just returned home to Tea Gardens after one of the great adventures of his young life; sailing on the Young Endeavour from Newcastle to Brisbane. Blake was among a crew of 24 young Australians chosen to crew the vessel on its 11 day voyage. “It was really amazing, it felt like we were one big family,” Blake said. At the start of the voyage, it wasn’t all smooth sailing, with Year 10 student from Bulahdelah

Central, plagued by sea sickness for the first couple of days. “It wasn’t good, it was very frustrating because I just wanted to learn things,” Blake said. Eventually he found his sea legs, and he was able to tuck in with training and the food which was very different to what Captain Cook’s Endeavour crew would have consumed more than 200 years ago. “We had lamb chops and nachos one night,” he said, “And one day we caught a tuna which the chef turned into tuna bake,” he said. Blake threw himself into shipboard life and by the end of his voyage he received the coveted ‘Young Endeavour Award’ in recognition of his commitment to the pursuit
of excellence. The Young Endeavour Brigantine, is a tall ship purpose built for sail training. It was gifted to Australia by the United Kingdom for our Bicentenary back in 1988. Since then, the Young Endeavour Scheme, in partnership with the Australian Government and the Royal Australian Navy, has provided training voyages for over 12,000 young Australians. And would Blake do it again? He didn’t hesitate

The crowd was given the task of coming up with five major priorities for Council to consider. After round table discussions, a list was compiled and delivered. “Clearly the number one priority amongst everyone here is a heated indoor pool,” Paul De Szell. Mr De Szell gave an assurance to the gathering that Council would now give serious consideration to the project, doing a cost and planning analysis. He also reassured the meeting there were no plans to close the existing Tea Gardens pool. Mr De Szell also dismissed rumours that the skate park area was to be moved to make

When parents separate, one parent may allege that their children will be at risk of physical or emotional harm if left in the unsupervised care of the other parent because of risks of family violence, abuse, anger related or mental health issues, alcohol or drug abuse. The children are then prevented from seeing the other parent. That other parent usually seeks to neutralise or manage the risk of harm to the children by offering the services of family members or friends as supervisors when they spend time together. The suggested supervisors may then be requested to sign an undertaking to the family courts acknowledging that they are aware of the allegations and risks and will strictly supervise the time that the non-resident parent spends with the children. If you are invited to sign such an undertaking in such circumstances, be alert to the following: 1. You will be placed
in the position of a rock and a hard place. Boundaries can easily be crossed. Supervision may be arduous with many conflicts of interest. 2. Road test your obligations to see if they are able to be complied with in a practical and pragmatic way. 3. Any undertaking needs to be carefully scrutinised. Actively engage in the drafting of your obligations and clearly state when it ends. 4. An undertaking to a family court has the same force and effect as an order of the court. If you breach the undertaking then you can be dealt with for contempt of court. You may become embroiled in litigation. This may become expensive. 5. Punishment for a contravention of an order that involves a flagrant challenge to the authority of the court includes a possible sentence of imprisonment, a fine, a suspended sentence or the giving of security for good behaviour.

FEDERAL Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie has congratulated Bulahdelah Soccer Club on securing Federal funding under the Volunteer Grants Program. Dr Gillespie said the Club had been successful in securing $2,800.00 in funding towards new equipment, including a new Fountainline ProLine V4 line-marker machine. “The Club organises the regular winter and fields teams in Football Mid North Coast Junior championship, as well as a summer 6 a side competition. They are also working towards re-establishing their regular women's and men's teams and is encouraging more participation among the community,” Dr Gillespie said. “Currently the volunteers are required to do two to three passes using the Club’s old linemarker to achieve good lines for the

fields. With the new linemarker machine, this task will reduce the time spent weekly by volunteers by up to two thirds, as well as providing a great result.” “The Bulahdelah Soccer Club is continuing to encourage more people to become involved, to not only build up the competition, but also the social and health benefits the sport provides for both children and adults alike.” The Club is run entirely by volunteers. The local soccer fields are marked weekly by volunteers all year round. The volunteers devote a significant amount of their personal time each week in order to make the facilities as good as possible for our participants and they are to be congratulated on their efforts.

COLOUR-IN COMP
Bowlers from Lowlands Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA 8 MAY: Three visiting bowlers from Lowlands were responsible for pushing our numbers, participating in the usual Wednesday Nominated Triples, to the magic 60 mark. The winners today with game 2 on the grass were John Yabsley, Greg Smith and Rob Tucker. They had +13. The winners on the synthetic also with +13 went to Peter Cheney, Max Stephens and John Slater. The lucky card draw went to Col Saillard, Denis Wilberforce and David Perry. The much sought after Myall Bistro voucher went to Denis Wilberforce. 10 May: It is unusual to play a Club Championship Final on a Friday, but an accumulation of weather events and a crowded calendar saw the Club Major Pairs played today. The defending champions, Peter Gurney and John Parkinson took on Ross Barry and Danny Johnson. The Jaffa saw only the preliminary stages of the final but the signs were there that this was going to be a close contest. It is extremely rare that the turning point in the game actually happened on the 4th end where Ross and Danny picked up an unlikely 5. This gave them the confidence to really get into the game and, apart from a minicomeback from Peter and John at the 15th and 17thends, Ross and Danny were never headed winning the event 22-19. Congratulations to all the players that took
MYALL COAST
part and especially the new Club Major Pairs Champions, Ross Barry and Danny Johnson. 11 May: Round 9 of the Newcastle District Pennant competition was played today with the First National Dolphins Grade 4 side playing away at Raymond Terrace, Grade 6 playing Raymond Terrace at home and Grade 7 playing Karuah at Karuah. It is always difficult to win away but our Grade 4 side really stuck it to Raymond Terrace on their home turf. The match ended up a 59-59 all draw but not before an outstanding match by the John Parkinson four; 23-16 and a narrow loss to the Mark Hair team 18-19. Grade 6 similarly fared well although losing the match by just 6 shots, the Danny Johnson side were outstanding winning 25-19 and the Bill Jackson team managed a 16-16 all draw. Raymond Terrace winning 62-56! The mighty sevens moved into the sectional play-offs with a nice win at Karuah. Although dropping one game, the Alan Greenhalgh four put on another powerful display winning 22-12 and the Doug Naylor side completed the rare feat of playing through the competition undefeated. They won 26-16! The final round of the Pennant competition will be played next Saturday with the First National Fours playing away at Mayfield West and the Grade 6 side also playing away at Mayfield West. Grade 7 have a bye but hopefully will take the opportunity to have some practice on the grass in readiness for their Sectional play-offs the following week at Nelson Bay. In other news; The first round of the Club Major Singles will be played on Sunday 19 May. There is a big field for this event which promises to be more open than in past years.

EXPERT
What’s the deal with Pretty House Photographs? When you decide to list your property for sale, there are a few decisions to make. One of the most important things to research is how your property will be marketed to the world. The first port of call for the majority of potential buyers is the internet, where they can be found aimlessly scrolling through thumbnail size photographs of numerous properties for sale in their area of choice. For this reason, you need to ensure that your property stands out from the crowd as much as possible, starting with professional photography, which in my opinion is an absolute must. Make your main photograph intriguing enough that they choose to stop, click on your photo and open your listing for a closer look and read through for details. Another important factor is a floorplan. It’s an expected item, so don’t think that it is a waste of time and money having one as part of your listing advertisement. Happy snaps with an iphone just don’t cut it anymore, so do you research on the agencies selling in your area and ensure that your property is in good marketing hands. Hope this helps Denise

First Official Outing Hawks Nest Golf Club Social Club By Lyn PEIRSON THE weekend of 3-5 May was the first official outing of the Hawks Nest social fishing club. Senior Awards for batting aggregate and average went to Dave Foot 360 runs at 68.3 runs per innings. The bowling aggregate to Lucas Barry 16 wickets and bowling average to Sam Larkings 12 wickets at 8.80 runs per wicket. The Players Player was won by Jordan 'Digler' Barry and Captains Choice won by Darren 'Forty' Watt. The club award for Clubman of the Year, went to the popular Jim Drinkwater. Colin McCarthy said, “Jim was a well-deserved winner having been a stalwart of the local cricket scene for more than 30 years.” Karuah RSL, the Club’s major sponsor, was thanked for its ongoing support over the past 12 seasons. And finally, two Life Members were inducted this year, Brent Bills and Kellie Bills for their tireless support of the club for well over 20 years.
OUR local cricket season has drawn to a close again, culminating in an end of season presentation for the Karuah Tea Gardens District Cricket Club. Overall, it was another good year for the Club. “The U12s, sponsored by JDTV, finished the season beaten in an elimination semi-final and the Open Grade Seniors were defeated in the Grand Final,” Colin McCarthy said. Junior Awards for bowling aggregate and average went to James McCarthy with 12 wickets at 4.80 runs per wicket. The batting aggregate to Sam Bailey 129 runs and batting average to Tequarn Tickner 12.6 runs per innings. The junior encouragement award went to Sam Alchin and the Coach’s award to Jack Nolan. Each of the juniors were given a cricket kit bag for playing with the club.
