Nature welcomes Spring cleanup A YOUNG goanna emerged to welcome volunteers marking Bushcare’s Big Day Out at Jimmys Beach recently. “The presence of a new hatchling means the natural habitat that we are returning to the dunes, is beneficial for the native fauna as well as the flora,” said Kit Streamer a member of the Bitou Buster team. “An unusual sighting of the hatchling at that spot showed how important the work is in regenerating coastal bushland as habitat for our wildlife.” Seventeen volunteers turned up to clear

bitou bush, asparagus weed and motherof-millions on the dunes at the west end of Jimmys Beach, near Barns Rock. They were assisted by seven-year-old Lucy, granddaughter of members Trish and Gordon Blair. Bitou Busters of Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens were amongst hundreds of volunteer groups marking Bushcare’s Big Day Out. Once called Bushcare’s Major Day Out, it merged last year with Conservation Volunteers Australia. Marking this National Environment Day,

250 bush care sites across Australia celebrated Bushcare’s Big Day Out. It was a day designed to give every Australian the opportunity to find out more about their bushland, what is being done and what can be done so that it thrives. Bitou Busters Co-ordinator Jill Madden said, “The volunteers work once a month during March to October at different sites around the Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens area and always welcome new members looking for a useful role that offers a morning working in the bush with friends.”

essentials like school books and excursions can fall to the bottom of the pile.” The latest data shows that there are 1.1 million children living in poverty in Australia right now – and our Club is doing something about this huge problem that sadly affects so many. Ms Milburn said, “Sponsoring a child through The Smith Family helps ease the burden, providing a combination of financial support, personal support and access to a range of out-of-school learning and mentoring programs to help them get the most out of their education.” “We’ve seen firsthand the difference this

apprenticeships and traineeships currently being advertised, including heavy vehicle mechanic and parks and gardens apprenticeships, as well as traineeships in civil construction and design, surveying and customer relations. “We’re excited to be able to offer these wonderful opportunities to our community,” said Adrian Panuccio, General Manager of MidCoast Council. A full list of available positions can be found on Council’s website and applications close on Sunday 27 October. Short listed candidates will need to be available to attend a group interview at Taree on 14 November or Forster on 15 November. “We are looking forward to welcoming new employees to

VIEW Clubs raised over $1.1 million for The Smith Family last year and collectively sponsor more than 1,350 Australian children in need to support their education. VIEW members also volunteer over 70,000 hours of their time to help young people in their local community through homework, reading and mentoring programs run by The Smith Family. Ms Milburn said, “In our area we are

our organisation and watching them progress their careers in local government,” Mr Panuccio added. As an equal opportunity employer committed to attracting and retaining quality staff, MidCoast Council encourages people of all ages, genders, backgrounds and levels of experience to apply. Roles on offer are equally relevant to people finishing school or deciding on a career choice, to those of a more mature age looking for a career change. These job opportunities are part of Council’s ongoing employment based training strategy which also includes a graduate program. As positions become available, Council will advertise through their website and other employment websites, as well as local media outlets. In April 2019, the Australian Law Reform Commission released its final report: “Family Law for the Future”. Recommendation 17 is that the Family Law Act should be amended to simplify the process for splitting superannuation by developing template superannuation splitting orders for commonly made superannuation splits. This is a pragmatic proposal. The trustee of a superannuation fund is a third party to a marriage/de facto relationship and cannot be bound by the terms of a payment splitting order unless it has been given an opportunity to consider the proposed form of splitting orders. Such splitting orders must be drafted in accordance with the limitations on the court’s powers. The payments are split, not the underlying superannuation interest. Some fund trustees post templates on their websites to assist lawyers and parties

undertaking proposed splits with a view to streamlining the process and avoiding error and consequent costs. Other fund trustees have the skilled staff of their administrators vet the form of orders or outsource the task to lawyers to ensure they are within the courts’ powers and there are sufficient funds for splitting. If the process can be simplified there will be benefits for the whole community. A similar proposal was on a to-do list for the Productivity Commission some years ago. With the increasing merger and conglomeration of superannuation funds more parties will be members in fewer funds, and fewer funds should hopefully mean more collaboration by trustees and administrators giving effect to this recommendation in the interests of all members. We will keep you informed if there is any action on this recommendation.

If that’s the case, we won’t be able to meet at Hawks Nest, because I don’t have a car. I mean, you could come to my share accommodation – as long as you don’t mind my pet ferrets Norma and Norman. They are quite affectionate, though they have been known to go up a trouser leg quicker than you can say Sweet Mother McClarey. Or perhaps I am one of those weirdo writers. You know, the type. Like Jack out of The Shining – an aspiring author and recovering alcoholic (I mean, what writer worth their pound of flesh isn’t?). Perhaps the small slice of sanity I have left is rapidly diminishing from having to solve the problems of Port Stephens residents, when I should be writing my novel. Does that sound like fun to you, Mr KN? But if, one day, I happen to be in the Hawks Nest area, and I venture into the Mangrove Café and spot a readerly type in the corner having a quiet little chuckle over Jasminda’s column, I promise to introduce myself. I don’t drink coffee, though. I drink tea with a generous slurp of almond milk and a spoonful of honey

Southern Area Reference Group update By Gordon GRAINGER

THE Southern Area Reference Group (SARG) met on Friday 4 October, again well attended by senior members of Council Staff, including the Engineering Section. Many subjects were discussed, the following will be of interest to the readers. Council has appointed a consultant to determine details on the installation of a hydrotherapy pool. This follows a strong community demand for such a facility and the study will concentrate on location, costs etc. Council receive many requests for upgrades, or new footpaths throughout the Shire and responses can be ad hoc. They are developing a new document titled PAMP (Pedestrian Access Mobility Plan) which will include community consultation. This will include local projects such as the completion of the footpath along Myall Street. The proposed one-way traffic for motorised wheelchairs over the bridge and the completion of the Marine Drive pathway from Ogden to Coupland Streets. We are advised the next Community meeting in Tea Gardens is scheduled for 26 November and we urge all to include that date in your diaries. Bulahdelah held their Great Lakes Food Trail last weekend and report great success. It promotes sustainable practices in food production and highlights the great offerings we have in this area. A must for next years’ October long weekend. Pindimar / Bundabah advise a return

of 87 responses to their recent survey on the community vision for the future. At the top of the list are upgrades to road maintenance and drainage, now listed for discussion with Council. A total of 73 ayes was also received to include Pindimar / Bundabah within the Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest suburban area. National Parks report the relocation of 3.2Km section of Mungo Brush Road is expected to be completed by mid-late October, when traffic will be diverted to the new road. The old section will be closed and rehabilitated. The MRAG have received reports of river pollution exacerbated by the brain dead and will

begin a new clean -up campaign, hopefully to be conducted next March. It has received the support of Council and the local SES and looks forward to the great response received from the community in earlier campaigns. The Group can also report the natural river entrance to the Bay is rapidly closing due sand migration and Council is urged to bring forward the next dredging campaign. Sand migration is also impacting 8 locations between Corrie Island and Tea Gardens, where large craft are touching bottom. As this is a navigation channel, State Government. must address the situation before damage or worse will occur.

Art Show 2020 By Janette COPPOCK This is a shout out to local artists who would like the opportunity to display their talents at a public event. The Myall Community Art and Craft Centre is calling for works of art from artists who do not have an outlet and have not had an opportunity to show their work in public, to participate in the Centres January 2020 Art Show. A condition of application is that the art work has not been displayed anywhere before. A small fee will apply to cover membership liabilities. Here is a chance to see your art work hung with the MCACC Art Groups work and perhaps sold to a discerning buyer - what a thrill that would be! If you are keen to know more about the Art Group, the 2020 Art Show, or the MCACC in general, you are welcome to call into the Centre from 10am to 4pm, or on a Monday from 9am to meet the Art Group.

q GRAINGER: “You will see I have made reference to the silting of the river and very much a potential danger, particularly with the holiday period coming up. This mud map is from the ferry people where they are already hitting sand on the trip between Corrie Is and Tea Gardens. The sand banks are highlighted in black.”

Back to Old London Town By Luke BOYD

COMPERE for the evening , Mr Chris Harvey, took the crowd to Old London town and back with his Myall Melodians singing as well as dancing the evening away. The stage was set, costumes donned and the rest was a night involving the songs from the public hotels of London. The music was from the 1700 - 1800's and guests were all prompted to sing along in every second verse. Guests’ experienced a great riotous night of singing along with the Myall Melodians. Beginner through to experienced singers are all very welcome to join the Myall Melodians every Tuesday night, 7pm at the Grange Clubhouse.

Open Water Swim

By Marian SAMPSON

FITNESS, fun and friendship are at the heart of Masters Swimming. All of these will be celebrated at the third annual Myall Master Open Water Swim in November. The first Myall Masters Open Water Swim was held at Jimmys Beach on 29 October 2017. Valerie Mobbs told News Of The Area, “Masters Swimming NSW were wanting to promote Masters Swimming in the Hunter and the Myall Masters Swimming Club suggested a way to do this was to hold an Open Water Swim at the beautiful Jimmys Beach.” In 2017 there were two categories the 600 metre and the 1500 metre swim. A total of 58 swimmers entered, with ages ranging from 20 to the oldest being 78 years old. “The event was a great success with lots of the swimmers saying they would be back the following year they had enjoyed it so much.”

q

In 2018, the event was even more successful with 126 swimmers participating; 61 in the 600 metre event and 65 in the 1500 metres, with some swimmers participating in both races. The youngest swimmer was aged 22 and the oldest an impressive 81 years young. This years event will be held on 17 November and it’s looking like it will be bigger again. “To date we have 30 entries in the 600 metres and 45 in the 1500 metres with online entries closing on 10 November.” The swim is held within 20 metres of the shoreline and our local surf club provide water safety craft and personnel while the swimmers are in the water. The cost of the swim is just $30.00 which gives you entry in both swims and is open to anyone over the age of 18years. It is not a requirement to be a member of masters swimming to participate. If getting into the thick of things isn’t for you the Myall Masters also makes a great spectator event.

BOWLERS will receive the news of the passing of Barry Lakeman with considerable sadness. He died peacefully at Estia Health on Wednesday evening. For many years, Barry was a driving force not only of our bowling club but also as Treasurer of our registered club and was an integral part in the development of both entities. He was a driving force with the establishment of the synthetic green at the Bowling Club which has proved to be a wonderful asset to the Club and to bowlers

alike. Affectionately known as “the legend” during his playing years, he had a likeness for the weighted shot and it was always a good idea to have “one down the back” when playing against him. He will be remembered and missed by those who knew him. 9 October: On a more cheerful note, our gala on Wednesday attracted 56 bowlers which included one visitor from Hazelbrook Vic Martin. The weather had returned to a wintery blast with strong southerlies making play difficult. The results for the day were determined on the second game with the highest margin.
