THE Federal Election has been announced and Australians must act now to ensure they are enrolled before the deadline of 8pm on 18 April 2019.

If you are not enrolled, you can’t vote in the 2019 Federal Election,” Mr Rogers said. “Australians must also update their address details

MIDCOAST Council’s parks and roads teams have been busy in the lead-up to Easter and the school holidays, preparing for an influx of visitors during this busy time. While some projects were due for completion this week, issues with contractor availability means crews will be on the ground in Hawks Nest for at least part of the school holiday period. Resealing works on Ibis, Dolphin, Kurrawong and Curlew Avenues will take place during the second week of the holidays, w/c 22 April, as well as on Myall Way in Tea Gardens near the Toonang Drive intersection. “Our approach is to work around

holiday periods to minimise disruption to locals and visitors, however this isn’t always possible,” explained Jamie Condie, MidCoast Council’s Manager of Operations South. “Resealing works nearing completion in Hawks Nest can’t be pushed back until after the holidays, as the cooler weather can negatively impact the outcome.” Resealing requires a warm road surface to be effective. If the road surface is too cool the bitumen sets quickly and does not adhere to the existing road properly, and the aggregate doesn’t stick to the bitumen. And works to install new playground equipment in Providence Park, due to be in place by Monday 15 April, have been delayed. “We’ve completed the initial stage according to schedule, removing the worn fixtures,” said Dan Aldridge, Council’s Manager of Community Spaces, Recreation and Trades. “Unfortunately contractors engaged to undertake the installation have faced delays, which means the playground will remain closed for the first part of the holidays.” It is expected the installation will commence early next week and the playground reopened as quickly as possible. Families holidaying at Hawks Nest, and locals looking to enjoy the break, are encouraged to visit nearby parks and reserves that include Booner Street Reserve, Moira Parade Reserve, Jimmys Beach Day Area, and Winda Woppa Reserve. Tea Gardens Library will also be hosting some exciting free activities during the school holidays including a screening of “Maya the Bee” on Wednesday 17 April at 2.30pm, and Anzac Day craft workshops on Wednesday 24 April at 2.30pm. “We are committed to improving infrastructure for our communities, with roads and playgrounds a key focus”, Dan added. “Both projects to be completed over the coming weeks in Hawks Nest will deliver important and positive outcomes for the local community.”

Sand Transfer Trial Up and Running
By Margie TIERNEY TRIALS have begun of the long awaited Sand Transfer System on Jimmy’s Beach. The $4.1 million dollar project uses pumps to take sand from the Winda Woppa stockpile to renourish Jimmy’s which has been battling severe erosion problems for decades. The three week testing period aims to

pump 10,000m3 onto the beach to provide a temporary buffer for the winter season. “The testing of the Jimmy’s Beach Sand Transfer System has commenced with great results,” Andrew Staniland, MidCoast Council’s Coastal Management Coordinator, said. The Council plans to use the system at least twice a year at a cost of $200,000 as

opposed to previous trucking of sand onto the beach which required $600,000 worth of funding. Outside of the two planned transfers of sand each year, it will take at least a month to get the system up and running in the case of an emergency. It’s still not clear who will operate the site after the initial testing period by Council. While members of the Winda Woppa Association have welcomed the Sand Transfer
WINDA WOPPA: Sand Transfer System. System, Ken Garrard said, “The Myall is silting far too fast, so does it make sense to put it back on Jimmy’s Beach when it just ends up back in the Myall. There must be a better way.” Andrew Staniland said, “This System is not designed to stop the erosion, however, it will continue to provide a temporary sand buffer along The Boulevarde part of the Beach far more effectively than previous trucking campaigns.”

Memorial Hall New Hub
q By Marian SAMPSON
c NOTA Graphics - Ref: CarpetCourt_160818
THERE’S a community hub in the town of Bulahdelah that’s serving the community well. First built in the 1940’s by returned servicemen and owned by Crown Land, the weatherboard War Memorial Hall is now used for a myriad of community activities. From art shows to themed dinners and musicals the once dilapidated hall is now a key venue in the town. It is a survivor having won out against neglect and fire. The most recent additions to the War Memorial Hall are the Men’s Shed Annex and the War Memorial Garden with its rotunda. The Men’s Shed was built with the assistance of Government Funding and fundraising and is open for local men to connect with each other on Monday for cards, and Wednesdays and Thursdays. Men interested in connecting and getting involved in the Men’s Shed and its projects can

simply drop in while the shed is open. The Men’s Shed is currently building beekeeping boxes and also constructed the stands where copies of the NOTA can be found in and around Great Lakes and Port Stephens. Jeff Carryer who is a member of the Bulahdelah War Memorial Land Managers Committee told News Of The Area, “The War Memorial Hall has become a community hub, with art shows, musicals, and evening events being held in the garden and under the rotunda as well as in the Hall.” The Bulahdelah War Memorial Hall will be serving up its usual tea and biscuits at Hall for the towns ANZAC dawn Service and 11am Service on 25 April. “The Bulahdelah War Memorial Hall offers people in the town an affordable venue,” he said. Anyone wishing to book the hall can contact Jeff Carryer on 0413133511

By Marian SAMPSON
STROUD Show is on again 26-27 April. Spectators can watch the serious business wife carrying which is always great fun. This year’s show is host of the inaugural Brumby 250 where four horse trainers from New South Wales have put all of their skills to the test for the past 250 days to train four Snowy Mountain brumbies, going head to head as they battle for more than $10,000 in cash and prizes. The Brumby 250 Tournament, is a first for New South Wales and an initiative by the Hunter Valley Brumby Association. President of the Hunter Valley Brumby Association, Kath Massey, is head of a small team overseeing the event and ensuring everything runs smoothly for both trainers and the Brumbies, “To ask people to take care of and train a wild horse for 250 days is a massive ask, especially in such a devastating drought, but everyone jumped at the opportunity. ‘We have just been astounded with what the trainers and the Brumbies have achieved in such a short time and we can’t wait to see what they have in store for the finals and no doubt the crowds will also be amazed.” They will compete at Stroud Show on 26 April in the led and ridden Brumby classes and Saturday the 27 April is the grand finale

Photo by La Bella Vita Photography. being the freestyle competition where the trainers will use their imagination to showcase everything they have taught their Brumby over the past 250 days. Hannah Pikkat, one of the trainers said “This has been a fabulous learning experience. “I’m nervous about the finals but I’m also
very excited to show what the Brumbies can do and what I have taught Gypsy,” says Hannah who has also opted to keep her Brumby after the Tournament is finished. The show also has a wide range of food stalls, arts and crafts, and produce. The K9 jumping is sure to be a hit with dogs scaling walls of up to 2m.

Add to this the program of barrel racing, ute muster, demo-derby, post splitting, animal nursery, rodeo, fireworks, prized produce and lawnmower race and Stroud has the makings for a wonderful show. Nominated Triples Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA 10 April THE Wednesday Nominated Triples competition held today attracted 57 players including visitors from North Haven and Sydney. The winners this week were determined by the second best performing teams in both games. This saw Vic Garlick, Col Fossey and Bill Heylbut, on +17 winning some money, and the composite team of George Winter/David Benson, John Yabsley and Neville Vaughn, on +13, completing the prize winners The lucky card went to Ron Green, Ross Barry and Danny Johnson. It was great to welcome back Dave Benson after his major surgery and Peter Cheney is stalking the green and just itching to play. President, Noel Jackson welcomed a new member, Kevin Nowland, and presented him with the Club bowls cloth. 13 April Round 6 of the Newcastle District Pennant Competition was played today with the First National Grade 4 side playing Karuah at home. It was a case of Tea Gardens winning the battle but losing the war as Tea Gardens won two of the three games. The John Parkinson team was the most successful winning 20-17. The Keith Smith side won a close won 1716 but the remaining game the Karuah team won by too many shots for Tea Gardens to take the match. Karuah winning 61-51.
SPORTS
Grade 6 played away at Wallsend and it was a similar story to that of the Fours. The Leigh Hunt combination stood out for Tea Gardens with a great win 26-13 and the Noel Jackson team dropped an unfortunate 5 on the penultimate end to lose their game 19-22. The remaining Tea Gardens team were never in the game and were soundly beaten 12-28. Wallsend winning the match 63-57. The good news for the weekend was another great win to the First National Grade 7 side. They played Wallsend at home. All three teams had good wins with the Alan Greenhalgh four leading all the way to win 26-20. The Doug Naylor combination kept their unbeaten record intact with a runaway win 31-17 and the Max Stephens four finished strongly to win 25-16. Tea Gardens recording a comfortable win 82-53. There will be no Pennant play next week, due to the Easter weekend and round 7 will commence on 27 April. In other news; Catch-up Pennant games and bad weather are interfering with round 2 of the Major Pairs Championship which was due to resume 14 April. Players in this competition are welcome to play at any time, by mutual agreement, provided they advise the Bowls Committee beforehand. The official date for the resumption of Round 2 is Sunday 28 April. There is a visit planned with the popular Duke of Wellington bowlers on Easter Sunday. All Tea Gardens players are invited to attend. Starting time 9.30 for 10.00 am. The cost is $20.00 per player including a barbecue lunch.

FABBA.
FABBA Performance ON APRIL 6th, 1974, a relatively unknown Swedish group won the Eurovision Song Contest with a song titled ‘Waterloo’. ABBA had arrived, and the rest is history. By 1982 it was all over. Even though ABBA ceased to record or tour together, their music continued to entertain, to enthrall, to inspire. The countless hits have transcended time to remain as popular today as they were when first released, in some cases more so. The movies Muriel’s Wedding and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert both featured ABBA’s music and won the group whole
new generations of fans. The opening of the musical and the movie versions of Mamma Mia! have audiences dancing in the aisles, reliving memories… and for some, discovering the ABBA sound for the first time. FABBA will take you on a musical journey when life was as good as an Abba song and the only way to travel was on the Priscilla Bus… from Eurovision to Mamma Mia to the Abba phenomenon with all the songs, costumes and comedy combined into one FABBA-ulous show!

45 Coolabah Close TEA GARDENS PRICE: $639,000
“IS IT BEST TO WAIT UNTIL I FIND THE PROPERTY I WANT TO BUY BEFORE SEEKING FINANCE SO I KNOW HOW MUCH I NEED, OR SHOULD I SECURE MY FINANCE BEFORE I START LOOKING?” THE importance of this issue cannot be overstated. In the wake of enquiries and complaints, banks and non-bank lending institutions have significantly tightened mortgage lending, not only by way of approvals, but also borrowing amounts. Information is power, so it’s vital you know where you stand. The last thing you want is to locate and fall in love with your dream property, only to find that your borrowing power falls short of the price point. So, when you think it might be time to make a new purchase, become a first-time owner-occupier or investor, the smart thing to do is to make an appointment with your lender – or meet with a few lenders – to discuss your potential borrowing power. When you’ve found the lender that best suits your needs and budget, secure written pre-approval, so you’re good to go when you find the property of your dreams! Hope this helps Denise
