Budget Strain for Students

By Daniel SAHYOUN FEDERAL Treasurer, Scott Morrison, delivered the Budget last week, declaring it “a credible and affordable plan” based on “fairness, security and opportunity”. But for Tea Gardens student Georgia Mason, who is currently studying at the University of Newcastle, the 7.5 percent hike in tuition fees doesn’t feel like a fairer system. “There is already enough pressure on students to meet the cost of studying,” Georgia told News Of The Area. “I’m working in addition to studying full time, but it all goes towards bills, living and Uni expenses, transport and text books.” With an increase of around $3,600 in fees, a four-year, government-

assets will decline,” Council documents state. The NSW Government, under the leadership of

former Premier Mike Baird, guaranteed that newly amalgamated Councils would be protected from

subsidised degree will now cost up to $50,000, and a subsidised six-year medical degree will cost a maximum of $75,000. But there is more bad news for students, who will have to start repaying their tuition fee loans once they reach an income of $42,000, instead of the current $51,957.

HECS repayments just adds extra pressure for students”. But the budget does deliver some benefits for pensioners. Up to 3.5 million people receiving pensions and parenting payments will get a oneoff cash payment of $75 for singles and $125 for couples to help with winter power bills.

“It’s not a lot, but every bit certainly helps,” Bulahdelah resident Irene Worth said. The Government will also provide $5.5 billion for home support services for the elderly. “People want to stay in their own homes for as long as they can,” Bulahdelah Neighbour Aid volunteer Dianne Burns said. “Most people are not long-term residents in nursing homes anymore, so this funding is

important to support them in their homes.” In other changes, pensioner concession cards will be restored to those who lost it after the pension assets test change was introduced earlier this year. Mr Morrison said the Budget “makes the right choices for Australians who are working hard to secure the better days ahead for themselves and their families”.

Respond on Rate Rise FROM Page 1 Government Amendment (Rates-Merged Council Areas) Bill 2017 passed in NSW Parliament in March this year, gave MidCoast Council the green light to apply for a rate rise. According to Council’s Special Rate Variation (SRV) scenario, an Extra Ordinary Council meeting will be held on 31 May to formally resolve to apply

to the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) for the SRV. Council will then submit its application to IPART. Council states, “the application of additional funds will include $5 million per year to address the gap in renewal funding, as well as approximately $27 million over four

years towards the $180 million backlog”. If approved, the rate rise will be included in rate notices from 1 August. Documents outlining the SRV scenario were placed on public exhibition on 1 May. They can be viewed on the MidCoast Council website, or in person at Bulahdelah Rural Transaction Centre, Stroud and Tea Gardens District Offices and

Council Offices in Forster, Taree and Gloucester. Submission can be made online, by emailing council@ midcoast.nsw.gov.au or mailed to The Interim General Manager, MidCoast Council, PO Box 450, Forster, NSW 2428. Submissions close at 4.30pm on Monday 29 May, and must include the Submit Code: SRV2017.

Superannuation – it is to the asset world what the Orangutan, Black Rhino and Yantgzee Finless Porpoise is to the animal world – a protected species. The Superannuation Legislation provides clear rules limiting the use of superannuation, and access to it, other than in accordance with its intended use. For example, in the bankruptcy jurisdiction, superannuation is a protected asset, and is not available to creditors.

The Full Court of the Family Court has maintained the status of superannuation as a ‘protected species’ in the recent decision of Mackah & Mackah. Here the husband had failed to comply with an order that he pay $350,000 to the wife. The wife then brought enforcement proceedings and obtained orders

that the husband direct his SelfManaged Superannuation Fund to pay a Transition to Retirement Pension into an account jointly held by the parties; that the husband be restrained from using the account for his benefit; and all money in the account be paid to the wife.

The husband appealed the orders on the basis that they did not comply with the Superannuation Legislation. The legislation clearly provided that (unless in defined circumstances) a member’s superannuation benefit can only be cashed in favour of the member. The Full Court agreed that the orders that had been made by the lower Court were inconsistent with the provisions and set aside the original orders. The parties were sent back to the lower Court to find another way for the wife to get her $350,000 from the husband.

THE dust has settled and the music has faded but this year’s Lost Highway Bluegrass Music Festival will long be remembered as the best ever. “The Festival itself was an amazing success,” Organiser Sharon Wedd told News Of The Area. “Everybody loved it, from the wonderful venues, to the outdoor entertainment, the market stalls and car boot sales,” Sharon said. Hundreds of people flocked to Karuah for the three day event, and they came from all over Australia and overseas. “We had some American visitors who’d planned their holiday to coincide with the Bluegrass Festival.” “We also had some Belgian and Swedish backpackers who came on board as volunteers, working on the bar and helping out with security.” In all, more than 50 people volunteered their services to help organise

Bushfire Outlook By Margie TIERNEY

THE long hot summer is gone, but the work continues for our volunteer firefighters from the Pindimar/Tea Gardens Rural Fire Service. With winter almost upon us, hazard reduction plans are being put together for areas around Hawks Nest, Tea Gardens, Pindimar and Bundabah. Last weekend, it was also time for some housekeeping at the Brigade’s Annual General Meeting at their Tea Gardens Headquarters. “The Brigade had 51 callouts since this time last year, the Lone Pine Fire being the standout on the weekend of 4 November, 2016,” Captain Helmut Panhuber said. More recently a crew was also involved in the flood clean up at Lismore. It was an opportunity as well, to say thank you to the Brigade’s sponsors, especially the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Motor Club and the Motorfest weekend, the Anglican Parish, Burton Toyota, Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Progress Association and CTC. Community Liaison Officer, Noel Quince, is

looking to increase public awareness. “We’d like to have street meetings, explain to people what the actual fire danger rating is, have they got a fire plan worked out and explain the new maps we now have, which show that their house could actually be in danger.” ‘’People tend to become complacent, we don’t want to scare them but inform them,” Noel told News Of The Area. “A lot of places, there’s just one way in and one way out, they need to know where they have to go in case of an emergency.” “To be informed is to be pre-warned,” he added. “You get a lot of locals who come here from the city to retire and have no idea what it’s like to live in the bush.” Last word of the AGM went to Captain Helmut Panhuber, “On a personal note, I’d just like to thank all the members for their enthusiastic help throughout this past 12 months.’’ “It’s also great that we have had some younger people join the Brigade; Dad’s Army no more!”

Myall Melodians and Rotary of Myall Coast By Margie TIERNEY GREAT things happen when community organisations join forces. The Myall Melodians and the Rotary Club of Myall Coast have combined in a joint fundraising venture to support the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club. Apart from a great cause, the community will benefit from a weekend of terrific entertainment on 25, 26 and 27 August with a series of concerts called ‘Tapestry of Musical Nostalgia’. Proceeds from the

concerts will be added to funds raised by a Rotary Club raffle. Tickets for the Rotary raffle are now on sale around Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest. First prize, is three days and two nights at the Hyatt Hotel in Canberra plus $200 spending money. The raffle will be drawn after the matinee concert performance on Sunday August 27, terrific timing if the winner wants to head to Canberra for the annual Floriade Festival in October. Second prize is dinner for two at Mumm’s on the Myall Restaurant to the value of $150 and third is a

voucher for $50 from Ella’s Boutique. The Rotary’s Ian Mackenzie-Smith said, “The Club is thrilled to be involved in this fundraiser and we look forward to great support from the Community as the Surf Lifesaving Club provides such an essential service to locals and visitors alike.” Ray Hosking, President of the ‘Melodians’ added, “The Surf Club is in need of upgrading their equipment and the funds raised will be utilised to purchase a defibrillator for beach use, a PA system to be fitted to the beach rescue vehicle and a general updating of the beach safety signage.”

newsofthearea.com.au STAY UP-TO-DATE ON SOCIAL MEDIA: By Margie TIERNEY THE women of the Myall Community continue to do amazing works for charity, giving so much and expecting nothing in return. Throughout the month of April, Tea Gardens mum of two, Jodie Genner, became a human collection and distribution point for the ‘Share The Dignity’ organisation, with the community asked to donate sanitary items for homeless women. “I collected 212 items,” Jodie told News Of The Area. Jodie’s office at Century 21 in Tea Gardens was just one of five drop off points. “I would drive from Tea Gardens to Raymond Terrace every Monday and collect from Blooms Chemist, JobLink Plus, Essential Mind, Body and Soul and Rachel Mulley’s Chemmart Pharmacy. During one such pick up, life was stranger than fiction when Jodie piled dozens and dozens of donated sanitary items into a shopping trolley to make her way through the Raymond Terrace Mall. “I wondered why people were giving me funny looks,”

Jodie laughed. ‘’I delivered all 212 items to the Salvation Army in Raymond Terrace and they will be given to women in need within our local and surrounding areas.’’ Local group ‘The Pearl’s’ also donated money to the campaign. “The Pearls is a very small group of like-minded women who meet for lunch once a month,” Maria Harder told News Of The Area. “The money we raise we proudly gift back to small local groups,” Maria said. The Pearls group was behind the fundraiser ‘Buy my Wardrobe’ held at the Tea Gardens Hotel during the Myall River Classic last year. They raised $1,400. This time ‘The Pearls’ donated $400 to ‘Share the Dignity’ to help roll out sanitary vending machines across Australia for homeless women. As of late last week, the total number of sanitary items raised by ‘Share the Dignity’ across Australia was a staggering 140,843 and counting. The campaign will run again in August.

THE Federal Budget provides an increase of $820 million in funding for NSW Schools over the next four years, however, NSW Teachers Federation Councillor and local teacher, Mrs Vanessa Shultz, said the injection of funding “falls way short” of the original Gonski funding promise. “The Federal Government was supposed to deliver $3.8 billion over the next two years, and according to Malcolm Turnbull, we will get less than half,” Mrs Shultz said. Under the Gonski needsbased funding agreement introduced by Labor, all schools would reach the minimum resource standard by 2019.

“The Turnbull funding plan means that schools will now take 10 years to reach this standard,” Mrs Shultz said. “This will disadvantage students and deny them the opportunity of reaching their potential.” According to the Federal Government’s School Funding Estimator, Tea Gardens Public School will receive $6,867,300, Bulahdelah Central will get $18,129,600 and Karuah Public School will receive $5,297,700 in funding over the next ten years. However, NSW Education Department secretary Mark Scott, wrote to every Public School Principal in the state last week, advising them not to rely on the funding figures released by the Turnbull

Government. “The figures for your school were calculated by the Commonwealth on the assumption that every school would receive exactly the same increase in funding,” Mr Scott stated. “The commitment by the State to the Gonski principles of needs-based funding means that every school receives a different level of funding to reflect the needs of their school community.” Mrs Shultz said every year that schools are not funded to the minimum resource standard, means that students will miss out on the help they need. “It’s all targeted, needsbased funding and is used for many things like one-onone literacy and numeracy

programs, additional teachers and teachers’ aides and senior tutorial centres,” she said. Mrs Shultz told News Of The Area, “Federation will

keep the pressure on the government”. “We just want everyone to be on an equal playing field,” she said. “I honestly don’t think that we can wait 10 years for funding.”

EDITORIAL STATEMENT:

Excellence in Small Business R & R PROPERTY took out the ‘Excellence in Small Business Award’ at the prestigious 2017 MidCoast Business Awards ceremony recently held in Tuncurry. The accolades during the Gala evening kept coming for R & R, with Denise Haynes also receiving a HighlyCommended award in the Business Leader category. Denise said the regional recognition “shows that all our hard work has paid off”. “The awards show our sheer determination and passion, and that the excellence we strive for has been achieved,” she said. “It gives us motivation that we are on the right track and that people are happy with what we do.” Denise and her team were also named as finalists in the ‘Excellence in Customer

Service’ and ‘Excellence in Professional Service’ categories. R & R Property commenced operating from Stroud in 2009. Denise said they expanded into Bulahdelah earlier this year due to community demand, and now employ seven staff across the two offices. “I’ve always sold in Bulahdelah, but now we have more and more people coming in wanting to sell in this area,” Denise said. “We are passionate about what we do, we are always growing and never stagnant, so we hope to expand even further.” R & R Property are great supporters of the local community, and have been major sponsors of the Stroud and Bulahdelah Shows and

regularly donate funds to many other organisations. “We sponsor a lot of things to do with the school and sporting facilities, including the ladies’ soccer and also the Hunter Barbarians,” Denise said. “We always use local produce in our settlement packages and always use local businesses, we never step outside of our area unless we absolutely have to.” The NSW Business Chamber Awards were a celebration of the region’s outstanding businesses, whose passion, determination and success inspire other businesses and business people. Denise and her team thank the community for their support and the sponsors and organisers of the awards.

Family Fun

By Margie TIERNEY

q

IT was a toss up, who was having the most fun at the Estia Health Open Day in Tea Gardens last weekend. There were smiles all round, from the residents of the Aged Care Facility, to the staff, the volunteers and the hundreds of visitors who enjoyed a great day out. The focus was on families and there was plenty to keep everyone happy from Queen Bee, the Balloon Twister, to entertainment in the form of line dancing, a ukulele group and market stalls. But a special mention needs to go to long-time

ESTIA VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR: Pat Burnett.

Roaring 20’s: Fun, Food and Fundraising By Margie TIERNEY IT’S been a little over a century since people danced the ‘Charleston’ and women were known as ‘Flappers’, but the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Lioness Club wants us to take a step or two back in time and join in the fun of a ‘High Tea‘ with the theme of the Roaring 20s’ theme. The event is being held in the atrium of the Tea Gardens Hotel this Saturday May 20 from 2.30pm with bubbles or juice on arrival. Participants are being encouraged to dress up in the 1920’s style, as there will be a Best Dressed Competition and music provided by the Old Bones Ukulele Group. There will also be a raffle and Roger Carey from ‘Port Stephens Jewellery’ will have a display in the Dolphin Room and discuss jewellery renovation, design, repair and sales. Last year, the Lioness Club event raised money for ‘Ovarian Cancer Research’,

this year funds will benefit ‘Prostate Cancer Research’. “We have a number of men in the community who are battling this disease at the moment,” Lioness Club President Linda Allen told News Of The Area. “Please come and help support this cause and have a fun day,” Linda said. “We encourage the gentlemen to attend this event.” More than 19,000 Australian men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year but survival rates are around 95 percent. Early detection is vital. Tickets are $25 per person and are available from the Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest Pharmacies and BT’s for Fashion in Tea Gardens. For more enquiries, contact Lioness Club President Linda Allen 0409 461 165 or Secretary Ann Hill 4997 1120.

Estia volunteer Pat Burnett. The 82 year old has just been named NSW Estia Health Volunteer of the Year. And no wonder! For the past seven years Pat has been volunteering her services four days a week at the Spinifex Avenue facility. “I do anything they want, from bringing people to the podiatrist, I bring the residents down when there are activities, I mark all their clothes when new residents come in,” Pat told News Of The Area. “I go on all the bus trips, to keep an eye on everyone.” “They gave me a big

bunch of flowers, a big box of chocolates, and two certificates.” It’s the volunteers and the staff who make the Aged Care Facility such a happy place. Trevor McNair also volunteers his time. “I live over the road and my wife is a resident here, it’s brilliant, the staff are wonderful and the facility is very good, what more could you want,” said Trevor. Kerry Pring works as a Carer at Estia and after 30 years in the industry she still loves her work. “The best part is when you walk into a room and make someone smile because you’ve actually made their day better.”

Lifeline comes to Karuah By Margie TIERNEY FOR residents of this beautiful part of Australia, one of the downsides is the lack of essential health services that city dwellers take for granted. So it’s welcome news that Lifeline has now established a face to face counselling service in Karuah. ‘’We have established a service to meet a need for those who wish to access it,” Lifeline’s Amir Salem told News Of The Area. “It can assist people in crisis or help prevent a person from reaching that level,” Amir said. The counselling service is not only for residents in Karuah but anyone from surrounding areas such as Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest. The Lifeline service is there to help people who may need general, personal or relationship counselling. “Sometimes people just need someone to talk to,” Amir said.

“The confidential service is free and there is no limit to the number of one hour sessions people can access thanks to funding from the local Primary Health Network,” Lifeline Hunter’s Manager Robyn Lawrence said. “Our counselling means people who may not be able to afford to see a psychologist or wait for an appointment in the public health systems get the support they need,” she added. The Lifeline Counsellor in Karuah is tertiary trained and able to offer appropriate support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other minorities. It’s a sobering statistic that suicide rates in Australia are at 10 year highs and are double the number of people who die on our roads. The counselling sessions are available between 9am and 3pm every Tuesday at the Karuah Medical Centre at 406 Tarean Road. Please note, bookings are

Myall Coast Mudcrabs By Ann SCULLY ROUND 5 of the Lower Mid North Coast Rugby Union Competition took the Myall Coast Mudcrabs to Taree last Saturday to compete against the Manning River Ratz An understrength Muddies team performed admirably and tackled proudly against their much larger opposition. In a hard fought match, the Muddies best performers in the forwards were our tireless Captain, Ashley Rushby ably

supported by “Turtle” Chris Sando who is playing his best football, Jackson Page and vastly improving “young gun”, Nick John. In the backs, the Muddies were well represented by Nathan Colver (until he suffered a severe ankle injury), Riley Hunter and our quicksilver winger Karl Nickle. Fullback, Trent Page, as usual was solid in defence. Final score Manning River Ratz 65 defeated Myall Coast Mudcrabs 24. Next game will be against Old Bar Clams at Old Bar which is a “must win” for the Muddies to be held on Saturday 20 May 2017 with 3.00pm kickoff.

Service and Leadership Karuah RSL Men’s Bowls Club By Trevor DAVIES

HAVE you ever considered the values of humility and service? Having been the member of a number of bowls clubs, I can clearly remember the day that I realised that being the member of an executive committee had far more to do with providing service to the members of the club than it had to do with leadership. It came to me the day I arrived at a club to find the President putting out the garbage bins. I remember saying to him, “You’re the President

Jimmy, why are you putting out the garbage?” He answered “ Who do you think will do it if I don’t.” After the penny dropped that being on a volunteer committee was about service, I started to notice just how work those in so called “leadership” positions did. I for one, will never criticise someone for the performance of their job without volunteering to help - this may be in the form of asking questions, making suggestions, or helping with a difficult task like writing policy or even helping with the heavy lifting! What is sad is that there

is always those who never consider getting in to help and look down on those who do the “heavy lifting”, but are ever ready to snipe and criticise from the sidelines. In our little club at Karuah, I am happy to say that this type of sniping is kept to a bare minimum. The quiet dignity associated with serving others, doing your best and not chucking in the towel is clearly recognised. Service and humility recognising that those who serve their fellows deserve the same glory as those who are champion players - that’s just one reason why Executive position holders

get their names up each year on the honours board along with playing champions! Immortality for both I guess. I would urge all within our club and in all clubs, to consider volunteering to stand for positions on committees and serving their fellow members. The dignity and fulfilment in serving your club can only really be appreciated through experience. If you would like a personal look at the sport of Lawn Bowls and even try the game, ring our club, the Karuah RSL Club, or in fact, any Bowls Club.

backline structure midway through the second half got the swampies two converted tries. A 10 minute sinbin for Billy Greentree added to Dora Creek’s ascendancy. Greentree had reacted to continuing niggle from Dora Creeks campaigners. Leading by 24 points to 10, the home team were able to hold out a concerted Hawks finish. Referees points for the Hawks went to Brooke Roach, who continues to play with breathing problems. Roach’s defence shook several opposition players. Best in attack was Billy Greentree, who tried everything to break a strong defensive line. Best defence went to Anthony Cameron who faced the big mobile backline all day. The supporters vote was for Steven Soper, who was in involved in everything. Jade Duroux was the

‘players player’ selection. David Edmonds received points in all awards, along with Luke Handsaker. John Schultz to the ball up strongly, along with Jason Purdon, and CJ Misifosa. Steven Soper was the player of the round, winning by half a point from David Edmonds. The Hawks are at home to Shortland this weekend. A “Super Saturday” will be played at Myall Park. The Myall River nines will kick off against Valentine Devils at 9am. The fourteens will play Nelson Bay at 10am followed by the 16s who will play Raymond Terrace at 11:15am. The undefeated Tea Gardens Lady Hawks will play Shortland at 1:00pm followed by the Hawks at 2:30pm. An old boys touch/ tag game is planned prior to kick off [subject to players], along with several

appreciation presentations. The “old boys” weekend invites past and present players, officials, and sponsors to the event. A “back to the nest” package has been arranged, which for $50 will get a t-shirt, complimentary drinks, and discount bar sales. A minor package of discount bar prices is also available. Tanya Keys will supply music from 3-7pm. A courtesy bus is also running for ‘back to the nest” members. A recovery BBQ will be held at Myall Park on Sunday morning. Details are on the Hawks Tea Gardens Facebook page. For membership cards, contact Glen Cookson at the Tea Gardens Newsagency, or cards will be available at the Tea Gardens Hotel on Friday night and at Myall Park from 9am Saturday morning. Ian Spruce Photography will be on hand to capture event highlights.

Hawks Swamped Tea Gardens Hawks By Neil REYNOLDS

TEA Gardens Hawks travelled to Dora Creek on Saturday to face an undefeated “swampies” side that had been elevated to A grade during the week. Facing yet another side laced with ex Newcastle grade players, the Hawks struggled. Still without several players through injury and work commitments, preparation for the game was again disrupted. Swampies opened the scoring with two unconverted tries through their big and mobile backline. The Hawks got back into the game before halftime, with a length of the field effort from fullback, Jade Duroux. They got within 2 points early into the 2nd half, with a well-directed kick from Billy Greentree to Brendon Davies, who went over out wide. A series of unforced errors early and total breakdown of

Send your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,

Is it wrong to have ex-girlfriends as Facebook friends? My missus is insulted that I am friends with the stunning girl I took to my Year 6 formal, my first true crush (Year 8) and a university student who I had a brief, but fulfilling relationship with. Mr BH, Hawks Nest Dear Mr BH, THE term ‘friend’ is a very wobbly one when it comes to social media. On my ‘friends’ list, I have members of our local Council (so I can see what they are really up to), emergency services personnel (you never know when you may need them) and some random lads and lassies from Ireland (I’m a sucker for their warped humour). But former loves? You seem rather taken with the ones on your list. The words “stunning”, “crush” and “fulfilling” give it away. I can understand, if your wife is folding your thankless offspring’s sports clothes, that she may not want to hear that Simone from Year 8 is about to run an Ultramarathon. I can sense, if your ‘missus’ as you so affectionately call her, is serving up some cauliflower soup while you watch The Voice, that she may not be too keen to see you gazing nostalgically (or lasciviously) at Ms Newcastle University 2006 (who is now an inspirational speaker/beauty product flogger). You’d be better off unplugging yourself from the vacuous world that social media offers and giving your wife a back massage, or a nice cup of tea, or running her a bath. After all, the posts and photos of former steadies are about as authentic as The Truman Show. Keep it real, Mr BH, or you may find that the filtered frivolities of your fantasies are all you have left. Carpe diem, Jasminda

Rate Rise Rod for Back? Dear News Of The Area, READERS may or may not be aware of the $64 rate increase MidCoast Council (MCC) wants to apply from July this year, and every year after that for four years. MCC has been very quiet about this increase, which has yet to receive IPART approval, and ratepayers have up till May 29 to make submissions to Council on

this plan. The increase is supposed to address a deficit in road and bridge funding, but what’s the rush to address this deficit? I don’t see debt collectors knocking on Council’s door. Right now, we have a Government appointed administrator whose sole responsibility is running the Council. The new legislation allows MCC and only MCC to apply for higher rate increases. Getting this done would have taken a lot of planning,

OPINION

time and (ratepayer) money and I’m wondering “why the rush”? If a special additional rate increase is so urgently required, I would rather be persuaded of its necessity by an elected councillor rather than a high level bureaucrat. If we let the present nonrepresentative Council get this extra increase through we could well be creating a rod for our own backs. I will be making a submission to Council objecting to the proposed increase and questioning their tactics in getting

Act Of Kindness A mother’s Day visit to Great Lakes Aged Care last week, was the first of many ‘acts of kindness’ planned by Year 12 students at Bulahdelah Central School.

By Daniel SAHYOUN

A MOTHER’S Day visit to Great Lakes Aged Care last week, was the first of many ‘acts of kindness’ planned by Year 12 students at Bulahdelah Central School.

Armed with flowers and gifts, the young people spent the morning chatting with the residents and said they found it a very rewarding experience. “It was nice meeting the ladies and speaking with

them about their lives, they had many interesting stories to share,” Year 12 student Shae Finch said. “They wanted to know about us as well, and they were very appreciative of our visit.” Fellow student Leah Slockee, said she plans to keep in regular contact with the residents she met. “By simply having a chat, you could see from the smile on their faces how much they enjoyed it,” Leah said. “Some of them said they don’t get a lot of visitors, so being able to spend time with them made us feel good as well.” BCS Year 12 Advisor, Ms Wendy Parsons, said “the students are a very

legislation that protects ratepayers from excessive increases changed without approval from those ratepayers. Council will claim that their survey indicated 75% approval, but I feel the reality is otherwise. If you also fail to see the hurry in implementing this increase and are reluctant to pay an extra $64 every year for four years, I suggest you also make such a submission. Peter Dodge, Tea Gardens

compassionate group of young people.” “They are quickly discovering that a small amount of their time can make a huge difference to others,” Ms Parsons told News Of The Area. The Year 12 students are planning to continue their ‘random acts of kindness’ during their final two terms of school. “We want to show the sense of contributing to the community that volunteering brings,” Ms Parsons said. “I hope once Year 12 finish school, they will remember these experiences and continue to give their time to help out in their communities.” The BCS Year 12 students come from all parts of the Myall Coast region including Karuah and Girvan, Hawks Nest and Tarbuck Bay, and everywhere in between.

Boost in Crisis Support

Counselling support.

LIFELINE Hunter Central Coast is boosting crisis support for people in Karuah. The charity has established a free face to face counselling service in the town and is also offering subsidised training to help community members identify people at risk of suicide, know how to keep them safe and link them to the right help.

Lifeline Hunter’s manager comprehensive suicide prevention service Robyn Lawrence said the additional support for the local community is on top of Lifeline services such as its 24-hour telephone crisis support line. Lifeline is also supporting work by the Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network to establish community signs on available support to

people in crisis. The first sign for Karuah will be erected later this month at 363 Tarean Road. Ms Lawrence said the training was ideal for teachers, health care workers, community services workers and general community members. Face to face counselling is now offered in Karuah every Tuesday between 9am and 3pm at the Karuah Medical

Centre at 406 Tarean Rd. To book please phone 4940 2000. Lifeline’s expertly trained counsellors can assist people in crisis or who need general personal or relationship counselling. The confidential service is free and there is no limit to the number of one hour sessions people can access thanks to funding from the local Primary Health Network. “Our counselling means people who may not be able to afford to see a psychologist or wait for an appointment in the public health systems get the support they need,” Ms Lawrence said. “Our counselling is for everyone and our teams are trained to offer appropriate support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other minorities,” she said. Suicide rates in Australia are at 10 year highs and are double the number of people who die on our roads. For 24/7 crisis support and suicide prevention services, please call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or visit www. lifeline.org.au/gethelp.

Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA 10 May Wednesday Nominated Triples was oversubscribed today with 3 games of Fours supplementing 4 games of Triples. Hopefully, next week we can christen the grass green after its long hibernation. A mix-up in the scoring meant that there were no clear winners today but suffice it to say everyone had a great game and the game of bowls came out on top. 12 May A nice field of 16 bowlers

played today in the Fabulous Friday Open Jackpot Pairs. The event welcomed two lady bowlers and two visitors. The winners were decided using the formula 4 points for a win plus ends won. Col Saillard and Tom Parkinson managed to influence the scorer to win. They were followed by Tim Grant and Henk Faber. The jackpot was not won and will stand at $220.00 next week. Worth winning! 13 May The final round of the Newcastle District Pennant competition was played today with the Grade 5 players

breathing a sigh of relief that their stressing season was over. The Mighty Dolphins Grade 5 side played host to Soldiers Point today but had a disappointing loss. There was one close game where the Col Amos team went down by 4 shots, but in the other games our teams were out-bowled. Grade 5 equipped themselves well during the season but was left understrength in too many battles. The mighty Dolphins Grade 3 side won again today playing away at Boolaroo. It was not all plain sailing, with one team going down,

but the Master Board score favoured Tea Gardens in the end 67-55. The Steve Pell Four went down by 5 shots, 16-21. Offsetting that, the Sean Mearrick team posted a 5 shot victory 23-18, and the Richard Lee combination had a great win 28-16, to clinch the match. Grade 3 finished the season on top of their section qualifying for the Sectional playoffs next week. It was a red-letter day for the Tea Gardens Country Club Bowling Club when the Mighty Dolphins Grade 6 side won a convincing last match against Tomago.

NewsOfTheArea.com.au

It was a clean sweep for the “sixes’ winning all their games in style. Danny Johnson’s squad won 22-13. The Doug Naylor Four won 33-16 and the Ron Webster team hammered the opposition winning 39-8. The Master Board score favoured Tea Gardens 94-37. I cannot recall Tea Gardens having two Sectional winners in a season in my time at the Club, but it was achieved today with Grade 6 also qualifying by finishing on top in their Section. There are 7 Sections in Grade 6, so depending on the draw they might be competing

at Wallsend next Saturday. Club members wish the Mighty Dolphins Grade 3 and Grade 6 sides every success next weekend. Go the Dolphins! 14 May There was no Sunday Mixed Bowls today, being Mother’s Day, but it will be back next Sunday bigger than ever. Entries for the Major Singles Championship close this week on Friday 19 May. The draw will be posted the same day. Play will commence on 27 May.

the Fours match tells the story of a great comeback by Maynie Roberts’ team consisting of Bev Dunn, Karen Green and Lily Smith versus Jan Kuzmic, Jo Younghusband, Robyn Webster and Pat Baker. Maynie’s team were down 5 v 17 at the 12th end.

With only six more ends to be played, Maynie’s side obviously bowled with “a never give in attitude”, more than tripling their score in 6 ends. The end result was a win to Pat’s team 18 v 16. Bowls is an interesting game.

The winners for the day were Pam Gilchrist, Bev Rhodes and Wendy Brand with a win plus ends. Thursday 11 May: Post Pennant lunch plus social bowls. Prior to play, Julie Kennedy was wished a happy birthday for 9 May. Format for play was Triples. The winners with the lowest margin were Pat Baker, Carol Hayden and Karen McPhie. Before lunch the winners of the “at home competition” was announced. Congratulations to Pat Baker for coming first, equal second Dorothy Thompson and Jill McBride and third place also a draw for Jan Kuzmic and Carol Hayden. Dorothy kindly contributed her prize money

to our annual Oncology Day. On to lunch, a big thank you to the chefs George Winter and Greg Pearson for cooking the meat to perfection. The Social Committee Wendy Jones, Francis Betar and Sheril Johnson, don’t know how we would manage without you guys. Thanks to all those who made slices and those who helped out setting up, serving and cleaning. Much appreciation to the members of the Men’s Bowling Club who assisted us during the Pennant Season either by driving the bus or umpiring games. It was great to see you enjoying our day with us. Just ending, unfortunately on a sad note. Following our game of bowls

our club President Robyn Webster informed us that Merle Sargeant had passed away the previous night. Merle transferred to Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club in May 2002. Merle was an integral part of our club besides being a very good bowler. Merle bowled in the 2011 team that won the Grade 2 Newcastle District Pennant Competition. She held many positions on the committee, the last being treasurer which she resigned from in 2016. Merle was always there giving encouragement and very sound bowling advice to all new players. We will miss you dearly Merle. Gone but not forgotten.
