Never a Dull Moment By Margie TIERNEY

THERE’S never a dull moment at the Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest Visitors Information Centre. As you’d expect, there’s plenty of enquiries for maps and booklets on what to see and do in the Myall area. But the volunteers behind the counter also get some unusual requests. “We get all sorts of enquiries,” Bev Dunn told News Of The Area. “This morning we had phone calls in relation to where you can get a flat tyre fixed, where you can hire

minimum requirements under the Australian Model Code of Practice for Saleyards and the Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for Livestock at Saleyards and Depots.” Dan Aldridge says that the estimated cost of $350,000 to bring the facility up to a standard for commercial use is not viable. “Even if we make the repairs, the stockyard would still need to be licenced by the appropriate authority to accommodate commercial livestock sales,” said Mr Dan Aldridge. The MidCoast region is serviced by two licenced stockyards for commercial livestock sales at Taree and Gloucester. This announcement prompted Nabiac farmer James De Berg to pen a petition and for Deb Gilbert to share an online petition with the Bulahdelah community., “Our Council has closed the Nabiac Saleyards without warning, without community consultation, without supporting our little town and without allowing any opportunity to address the issues,” Deb Gilbert said. On Wednesday 11 January Myall Lakes MP Mr Stephen Bromhead met with the Nabiac Saleyard stakeholders and MidCoast Council to discuss a way forward for the stockyards.

“It was a positive meeting and I expect to see a better outcome for stakeholders and the community in the coming days,” Stephen Bromhead said. On Saturday 14 January Gooch Agencies held a goods and chattel sale but not any cattle sales. In a release on Tuesday afternoon, the Saleyards will remain open after Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead held discussions between MidCoast Council and local stakeholders. Mr Bromhead said MidCoast Council had ordered a closure of the stockyards as they posed a safety risk for the public, while animal welfare was also a significant concern. “The saleyards were in a dilapidated state and had become a grave risk to both the public and

livestock,” he said. “The meeting was positive and MidCoast Council listened to what the stakeholders and community had to say. “The stakeholders were receptive to council’s concerns and through the discussions the issues were resolved. “It was agreed during that meeting that stock and station agents would spend $100,000 on materials and undertake the labour to renew all the sale pens, which benefit not only the cattle auctions, but the showgrounds, rodeos, campdrafts and other events. “The NSW Government also recently secured a grant for the upgrade of water and electricity and it now means water is available adjacent of the cattle pens. “This is on top of previous government grants that went to upgrading public toilets, the showground hall and funding for the nearby football field. “This is a fantastic outcome for the Nabiac community. The cattle sales are generally held in conjunction with the ordinary markets and goods and chattel sales. The continued operation of the saleyards will also have a flow on benefit to other local businesses. “I’m pleased that MidCoast Council listened to the concerns of the community and was very willing to meet with stakeholders and took on board their input before reaching a decision to allow the works to be completed to ensure the continuation of the saleyards. “I’m happy MidCoast Council was able to work cooperatively with both the NSW Government and the community,” Mr Bromhead said.

In just a couple of hours, 25 people dropped into the Visitors Centre, including overseas tourists from England. “The National Park day passes have become very popular,” Bev said. Maps and a booklet of businesses and things to do in the Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens area are freely handed out. From each enquiry, the volunteers at the Visitors Centre take a postcode as a

way of collating information on where the visitors and tourists come from. Last Saturday during the holiday period they had collected more than 50 postcodes. “Keeping in mind,” Bev said, “That’s just one person, there may be five or six people in the group that walks in.” Both Bev and Regina have been volunteering at the Centre for the past nine months.

The women are part of a large contingent of volunteers who keep the Centre open every day of the year bar Christmas Day. “The tourists come from all over England, France, Scotland, all over Australia, including lots of backpackers,” Regina said. “You meet lots of people, lots of funny people, and work with lots of funny people,” Bev said with a great big smile. to make an ‘accessory’ personally liable for the unpaid entitlements. The Court held that it did and, on the particular facts, that it should make the director personally liable. One consideration was that the security company probably had no capacity to pay (in fact, it was wound up in liquidation shortly after the hearing) and that the only prospect workers had of receiving their correct entitlements was if the director was personally responsible for payment. Whether or not the Court orders personal liability against an accessory will always be a discretionary decision, but the case does show that directors or officers are at risk of personal liability (and continue to be liable for civil penalties in any event) if they knowingly allow incorporated businesses to avoid payment of employment entitlements: Fair Work Ombudsman v Step Ahead Security Services Pty Ltd [2016] FCCA 1482.

WHEN Mother of two, Kim Oakhill, experienced the loss of a friend’s child in 2014, she wanted to do more for the family than just send flowers. “Flowers are a lovely gesture, but not particularly helpful. The Catholic Church hall is available to anyone in the community who wishes to hire it. It’s also vital during the busy holiday period when visitors swell the churchgoing numbers. “It varies between 150 parishioners and of course during the holiday season we have upwards of 250 to 300 people at the church on the weekend,” Paul said. Arty Thanks By Margie TIERNEY NO sooner have the members of the Myall Community Art and Craft Centre signed off on their three day annual Exhibition than they are planning for their next event. But first, the Art and Craft members have a few thankyous to pass on. “This year’s 2017 Exhibition would not take place if it were not for the amazing people who set up and took down all the tables and frames, namely the A Team,’’ Elsa Jones said. “Then there are the members who work each year to make the items for sale, the ladies and men who display the goods in each room to their best advantage and of course the wonderful people who visit and buy or just come in to browse and wonder,” Elsa said. Each year the Art and Craft group hold a raffle to coincide with the January

All proceeds from the raffle are donated this year to the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Visitors to the Myall Street Exhibition were also asked to nominate their favourite artwork to take out the ‘People’s Choice’ Award. This year the winner was Joan Richards for her painting of Barnes Rocks inspired by the work of talented photographer Glen Henry. Myall News Of The Area was also pleased to be a sponsor for the Exhibition. TWENTY eager youngsters have signed up to be Scouts in the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest area, but at this stage that’s all they can do. “The stumbling block we are coming up against is that there are no young adults putting up their hands to become Scout leaders,” Stan Woodrow from Scout Australia said. The Rotary Club of Myall

Coast has been recognised by the International Fellowship of Scouting Rotarians for their work in supporting the re-forming of the Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens Scouting Group. “But we need two leaders and they need to come from the local community,” Rotary’s Ian Mackenzie Smith told News Of The Area. “Obviously, having someone

who’s been a scout would be great as a leader but it’s not necessary.” The Youth Service Award was presented to Rotary “for service exemplary of Rotary International’s commitment to youth throughout the world through cooperation between Rotary International and Scouting”. Scout Hall habitable again. Rotary would like to appeal to the members of the Community to consider the benefits of having an organisation such as a Scout Troop available to the younger generation. “The advantages of an experience like Scouting by providing an outdoor classroom with life skills and healthy exercise on the curriculum is immeasurable,” By Rachael VAUGHAN WHILE we all swelter in the heat, hide in the air conditioning and wish for cooler days, RFS firefighter Darryl Luck is training in his firefighting gear any spare moment he gets when not fighting fires. The 47-year-old has been a member of the Medowie brigade for 14 years, and is currently training five to six days a week at Plus Fitness for some very special events. The first event on 12 March will see Darryl complete the ‘Scott Firefighter Stair Climb’, which is sixty-nine floors of the Columbia Centre in Seattle, Washington. Twenty-four kilograms of firefighter gear including breathing apparatus must be used to complete the climb. This event raises money for Leukemia and Lymphoma research and services. The second event on the 17 March, the New York City Saint Patrick’s Day parade, will see Darryl marching with the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), New Zealand and fellow Australian firefighters. Event three on 19 March is a particularly special event, the New York City Memorial Stair Climb, in memory of firefighters who lost their lives in the 911 attacks on America. This event takes place in the No.

Ian said. In summary, there’s 20 eager kids, there’s a Scout Hall, but no leaders. ‘Sadly, without adult involvement, it’s not going to happen,” Stan Woodrow said. If anyone would like to find out more about what is involved in being a Scout Leader, please ring Neal Renfree on 49971586. 4 World Trade Centre, New York, and consists of a 72 floor climb, whilst wearing 24 kilograms of kit. Darryl told News Of The Area that the symbolism of this event is very special. “Only 343 firefighters can climb in this memorial climb as they represent the 343 firefighters who lost their lives on September 11 2001 at the World Trade Centre attack.” “Each firefighter carries a photo of one of the firefighters who lost their life on that day as a mark of respect.” The climb raises money for the ‘Friends of Firefighters’ charity and the 9-11 Tribute Centre. The Friends of Firefighters charity looks after the physical and mental health of New York Firefighters and their families, and the 9-11 Tribute Centre is a place where the public can learn the personal stories of survivors, first responders, family members of those who died and local residents of New York affected by what they experienced during the attacks. “Approximately 1900 firefighters from over 5 countries attend. I am the first firefighter from NSW to attend either of the two climbs,” Darryl said. News Of The Area sends Darryl with our best wishes for this special experience.

part of who we are.” “We can’t wait to see what she works towards next,” she said. Holly from Forever Hair and Beauty donated her time and the cost of her cut to Variety Australia. If you are interested in donating to this worthy cause yourself, all the details can be found on the Variety Australia website. Congratulations, Anjah, on your wonderful donation and caring attitude to those less fortunate than yourself.

Straticic close of Libraries

IN an effort to give the best service possible to our community, MidCoast Libraries will close on Monday 13 February 2017 so the whole team can participate in a strategic planning and staff development day. With 11 libraries across the MidCoast region, bringing the whole team together is no easy feat, but MidCoast Council’s Manager of Libraries, Chris Jones, sees this as a great opportunity to get things

right. “Now that we are merging three different library systems under one umbrella, it’s really vital that we give ourselves the best opportunity to achieve the best outcomes for the library service and the community,” said Chris. “In order to get this right, we need to have all of our staff involved and the only way we can achieve this is by closing our branches for one day,” added Chris.

Thursday, 19 January, 2017

All MidCoast Library branches, including Taree, Harrington, Wingham, Hallidays Point, Old Bar, Gloucester, Forster, Tea Gardens, Stroud, Nabiac and Bulahdelah will close on Monday 13 February 2017 and will be back to normal hours on Tuesday 14 February. For those wanting to return items on this day, the after-hours chutes will be available at all branches.

Be Prepared for Bushfires A WET winter and good spring growth means a higher-than-average bushfire threat this summer, with hot and dry conditions forecast for the coming months. Medowie Rural Fire Brigade Captain Andrew Collins said, "Now is the time residents should be inspecting and preparing their homes and properties.” “Also think about what you're going to do with your pets and what to do if you're travelling.” The following list should be part of your plan: • When will we leave? What will be your sign to leave? It could be smoke in your area, or as soon as you find out there’s a fire near you. • Where will we go? Where’s a meeting place that’s safe and away from a fire area? It might be a friend or

relative’s place, or even a shopping centre. • How will we get there? What road will you take? What’s your backup plan in case the road is blocked? • What will we take? Make a list of what you’ll take in the event of a fire. Remember to include pets, identification and irreplaceable items such as photos or documents. • Who will we call? There should be someone we can call to let them know we’re leaving and that we’ve got there safely. • What is our backup plan? What if things don’t go to plan? Identify a safer location nearby such as a neighbour’s home that is well prepared, or a place of last resort. If you decide to stay, questions should include: Will anyone in the family will be

at risk by staying; will the family cope in an emergency situation; does the household have the equipment in the RFS Decide to Stay checklist and is there a back-up plan? It is not safe to stay with your property under some circumstances, such as if the fire danger rating is Catastrophic; if there is an Extreme fire danger rating and your home is not specially designed or constructed for bush fires; or if your property is not well maintained. Under these circumstances you should always leave early. Remember that bush and grass fires can move quickly and catch you off guard. If you are caught in a fire, protect yourself from the heat.

Australia Day Celebrations By Margie TIERNEY SLAP on the sunscreen, bring a chair and your favourite hat and head to Moira Parade Park for the annual Australia Day Celebrations in Hawks Nest on Thursday 26 January. For 25 years the Lioness Club has been organising the celebrations in the Hawks Nest/ Tea Gardens area and this year is no exception. For the early risers there’s the ever popular sausage sizzle and bacon and egg roll to kick start the day at 8am. There’ll also be delicious lamingtons for sale to be washed down with tea and coffee or a cold drink. On the official front, the Flag Raising Ceremony will

be at 9am followed by the Presentation of the Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year Awards. To add to the fun, Lioness President Linda Allen said, “There’ll be games and races for the children including the three legged race, sack rack and a few other activities.” “These will be run by Mr Ted Mowbray and assisted by the Myall Coast Little Athletics Club.” “Great music will be supplied by Joanne Van Der Linden,” Mrs Allen said. For history and ancestry buffs there will be stalls manned by the local Historical and Family History Societies. The RAAF Hawk Squadron will stage a Flypast around midday to top off the celebrations in

spectacular fashion. The Lioness Club would like to thank MidCoast Water for their donation and MidCoast Council for supplying the venue and facilities. For visitors or locals not familiar with the area, the Australia Day Breakfast is being held at Moira Parade Park at Hawks Nest, near the Binda Street Wharf. For Bulahdelah and surround areas, get along to the Bulahdelah Court House to celebrate the special day. At 5:30pm Memorial to Betty Bramble from the Historical Society. 6:30pm, share in a good old Aussie BBQ. 7:30-9:30pm, there will be light entertainment and watch some short local films.

WITH the start of a New Year comes the chance to fulfil a resolution, try something new or learn a new skill. The Myall University of the 3rd Age, or U3A as it’s commonly known, is holding its Registration and Enrolment day on Friday 20 January. The Myall U3A has been a fabric of the Hawks Nest Community since 1993. Allied with the University of Newcastle, its purpose and ethos is to offer interesting courses which encourage mental stimulation and improve the skills and

NewsOfTheArea.com.au

experience of the over 55s. “Courses include Art Workshops, Garden and Photography Clubs, a Writers’ Group, Italian language and culture; Fitness and Balance classes,” U3A President Chris Klimek told News Of The Area. “If you like to sing there is even a choir to join. “Every Friday morning from 10am to 12.30pm during school terms there are excellent presentations on a wide variety of subjects designed to be informative, entertaining and generally just good fun,” Chris said. Over a number of years MU3A has arranged the

popular annual Christmas Choir Concert and the Art Group has held their annual Show over the October long weekend. The MU3A also participates in other local events such as the Grey and Thespian Mardi Gras Festival in April and the Tea Gardens River Festival in October. The annual fee of $36 dollars gives members the opportunity to participate in as many activities as they wish. So why not pop along to the Hawks Nest Community Hall on Friday 20 January between 10 and 11.30am and learn something new in 2017.

Testing Time for Pensioners By Heather SHARP

A NEW year and a new change to the Asset Test for Pensioners. Amidst the controversies of politicians claiming travel entitlements for personal business, and the Centrelink

debt debacle, pensioners are being financially impacted by the Federal Government’s decision to change the Asset Test. Pensions that are affected include: Age Pension, Carer Payment, Disability Support

Pension, Widow B Pension, and Wife Pension. The changes have been met with anger by some pensioners who say they are not fair and will make their lives more financially difficult; while others say that the pension is a safety net and the assets test is fair and will support those in the community who are most vulnerable. In a reprieve for homeowners, the family home remains exempt from the assets test.

Bowling Action Heats Up FROM Page 16 Beaumont and Danny Johnson. They managed +34.

The runners-up on a score of +31 were Tom Short, Graham Kelly, Geoffrey Muggleton and Denis Ashbridge. Congratulations to all those who survived! 13 January

The oppressive heat continued today but it was tempered by a welcome north-east sea breeze, making conditions bearable.

The heat would have kept some bowlers away, but nevertheless 18 fabulous Friday Open Jackpot Pairs players competed. There were three games of Pairs and a game of Triples.

The “old firm” of John Slater and Alan Greenhalgh won the first place money from runners-up, the Triples team of Col Saillard, Greg Smith and Frank Dunn. Col, Greg and Frank may have been disappointed in coming second but disappointment turned to joy when they knocked-off the Jackpot.

They shared $260.00 between

them. Well Done! 14 January

The first round of the Club Championship Fours was played today in oppressive heat. There were eight teams competing. First round winners, by skip, were Leigh Hunt defeated Bill Heylbut 27-11.

The Greg Pearson combination defeated Noel Jackson’s team 27-14. Team Paul Syron , defending champions, won comfortably against the Steve Pell side 22-10.

The Alan Greenhalgh team won 18-7 over team Neville Vaughn after that side capitulated when one of their players became ill.

MYALL COAST

Local resident Ms Jan Noake told News Of the Area, “Pensioners have worked hard during their adult life and paid taxes accordingly, yet now we are being made to feel as though we are bleeding the system dry.” “I worked for more than 50 years, paying taxes, and have budgeted for my retirement carefully, using my Super as far as it can be stretched, but am being punished in a way for the reality that I may one day reply on the pension.” Compulsory superannuation

The second round of the Club Championship Fours was played today in overcast and moderate conditions. In a replay of last year’s final, the Paul Syron combination accounted for the Alan Greenhalgh side 25-15 in a great game.

The Doug Naylor side accounted for the Keith Smith team 28-7 and the Kerry O’Brien team prevailed over the S t e wa r t Sturrock side 2315. The s e m i finals

Irate about Rates Process OPINION

Dear News Of The Area, ISN’T it marvellous when MidCoast Council (MCC) indicated that it required more funds for roads and bridges in the Midcoast Region, the first thing to do is hit the ratepayers for the increase. Of course they all follow the usual procedure, run information nights under duress from irate locals, then conduct the survey

which always indicates that " the ratepayers don't mind paying more if we receive better services". Then it's the application to IPART indicating that they have exhausted all avenues of cost saving and the only alternative is to slug the poor old ratepayers again. But wait, there's more. MCC realised that whilst merging, they could not apply for a Special Rate increase for three years. And now, guess what, they have managed to find savings through efficiencies and that, together with

News Of The Area

an application for a grant of $14 million, means they will not have to seek the rate increase. One would have thought that MCC would have known the rules and regulations regarding the Special Rate application instead of wasting our money on information meetings and surveys of which there has been no result mentioned, except for the conclusion always realised above. John Alterator Hawks Nest

was introduced in Australia in 1992, so many Australians currently rely on a combination of superannuation and the pension. Ms Noake added, “To be told that my future pension will decrease because of a change in the assets test feels very unfair; it’s like the rules are being changed halfway through the game, but it’s too late for me to do anything about it.” If you need more information about your pension, contact Centrelink on 13 23 00. will be played next Saturday morning with what promises to be a battle royale between the Greg Pearson combination and the powerful defending champions skipped by Paul Syron. The remaining game will be between the Doug Naylor side playing the Kerry O’Brien team. Let us hope the weather is kind.

Hi Jasminda, I am eight-years-old. I’m having a party soon and my dad suggested I write to you to see if you had any ideas on what we could do? Miss SL, Salt Ash

By Rachael VAUGHAN WE all look forward to the holidays and spending time together as a family. But you’re only human if you’ve now reached the point of your holiday break from school with the kids that you’ve run out of things to occupy them, and everyone is climbing the walls. Let us help out by giving you a few cheap or free activities and adventures you can take with the kids to get out and about. For those who loved scavenger hunts growing up, why not make one of your own? Print out a list of things your children can find on a local walk,

Thursday, 19 January, 2017

and get the kids to work together to get through their list. Remember not to have them collect items from nature if they’re things they can’t remove, so ask them to draw a picture of the item. On a hot day, make a laser maze at home in the air con. Tie coloured wool up and down hallways at home, and award points to the kids for getting through the maze without touching any ‘lasers’. Freeze small plastic toys in Chinese food containers and give the kids small plastic water guns from the $2 shop to blast and chip away at the ice in a race to ‘free’ their toy first.

Find craft supplies you have at home, decorate a ‘crazy hat’ each, and have ‘high tea’ at home, or the park. Fill empty spray bottles with food colouring water, hang pieces of paper or newspaper on the fence, squirt madly and create wrapping paper for presents. Buy a packet of ‘water beads’ at the shops, drop a small amount in a large tub of water, arm the kids with strainers and slotted spoons and award them points for how many they catch. Get a notebook and allow each child to make up a story one line at a time, taking turns, then read the hilariously muddled story back to them. Stay tuned next week for another week’s worth of boredom chasers you can try with the kids. Happy Holidays!

NewsOfTheArea.com.au

Oh, to be eight again. What a delightful stage of life. I’m trying to recall my own party at that age. It was definitely a backyard affair with a homemade cake and the obligatory game of Pass the Parcel. That’s what we did back in the day and from what I can remember we had a rollicking good time. But things have changed, and may I suggest not for the better. I can pinpoint it to a specific event. It was at a party with a child who looked remarkably like a young Donald Trump. The kid kept throwing himself on the ground and kicking and screaming when things didn’t go his way. He screamed when he didn’t win the Egg and Spoon race and made a complete jackass of himself during Pin the Tail on the Donkey

(excuse my Americanism there, Miss SL, your dad will understand the pun). Instead of the parent saying, “You naughty little psychopath; go to your room”, they gave him a prize for being a jerk. That was the beginning of the age of entitlement, when parents started rewarding mediocrity and bad behaviour. At first it was just a Freddo Frog in every layer of the Pass the Parcel so no one missed out, and now we have event-managed parties for children. There are marquees and inflatable jumping castles, canapés and hired entertainment. There are personal assistants pandering to kids wearing tiaras. Sweet Miss SL, the world has gone a little bit mad. Buck the trend, little one. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with fairy bread and several games of Nonmusical Statues. Your daddy will thank me. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Lifesaver of the Year Camp CONGRATULATIONS to Sam Hyde, Windjana Chester, Tahlia Walton and Maddison Churchouse who attended the Hunter Surf Lifesaving Junior Lifesaver of the Year Camp last week. These four exceptional young people represented the Hawks Nest Surf Lifde Saving Club with pride, during the three days of activities, held at Anna Bay Retreat and Birubi Surf Life Saving Club.

These young club members have already gained their Surf Rescue Certificate, which is their first stepping-stone, following Nippers, within the senior patrolling ranks and take their place willingly every fortnight on patrol to ensure Bennetts Beach is safe for our community and visitors alike. Whilst at the camp our young members participated in a variety of activities including team building, board paddling and other lifesaving skills development. Guest speakers from the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, SLSNSW, Australian SLS Champions and past Junior Lifesavers of the Year also shared experiences and knowledge with the participants. A major focus of the camp this year was the planning of some

innovative ideas, by these young participants, in mixed club groupings. These were then jointly presented by the youth members to the Hunter CEO Rhonda Scuton, the Director of Member Services Steve Knight and the Director of Education Debbie Booth, who provided feedback on each plan’s feasibility. Ideas included a communication app, sister club activities, Inclusive Nippers (for kids with disabilities), a youth skills and development program and a club exchange

program. The quality of the presentations certainly impressed the panel so much that these ideas will now be presented to the thirteen Hunter club presidents at their next Branch meeting in February. A big thank you also to club stalwart and support operations member Tony Logue, who took the RWC (jetski) across to Birubi and provided the cadet members with firsthand experience on this vital piece of rescue equipment, as well as lots of fun!

Wendy's team did very well against a slightly more "seasoned" competitor. Good luck to both winning teams for the final on Tuesday 17 January. Much appreciation to Umpire Nola Jackson and

Controlling Body Merle Sargeant. Social bowls winners were Ingrid Luck, Bev Stephens, Wendy Jones and Deyonne Page. Birthday greetings to Nola Jackson. Great to see Bev Rhodes amongst the spectators at the Fours Competition. It will be good to see Bev, winner of the Club Minor Singles Competition, back on the green.
