As mentioned in the article we were unable to print the Premier Department’s side to this story due to the paper deadlines, however as promised, we did catch up with Catherine Cusack MLC to seek clarity. It’s now understood that the $1million funding promise to the Tea Gardens Police Station is in fact in the Budget and no ‘cut’ to the original promise amount was ever occurring. $117,000 is located within this financial year, with the remainder (of $1M) in estimates for the following year. “Claims the Premier has failed to fund the $1million upgrade are jaw dropping,” Ms Cusack told News Of The Area. Ms Cusack said that the comments made by Port Stephens MP Kate Washington were unhelpful and misleading for the Tea

Projects are cashflowed over time, so the money in the first year is just the funds needed for that part of the project - Planning and design $117,000. For Tea Gardens Police Station the

remainder of the $1million will be paid to contractors early in the next financial year when the project finishes.” “The exact same applies to Nelson Bay Road, since this was brought up by Ms Washington in the story last week. It is impossible to spend all $70million on a major road upgrade before the March Election. Before you build the road you need to do the surveys and planning, organise the contractors, and minimise disruption to traffic. Even if we closed the entire Road we could not spend the $70million in 8 months. What Ms Washington is suggesting is ludicrous.” “Your local Tea Gardens Police and the Station are valued, secure and the upgrade is going ahead as promised. It is all good!” Ms Cusack said. “The Tea Gardens Police

Station issue is particularly frustrating because for the past year the level of misinformation has been record breaking. First we had false claims the station was closing which upset the community for no reason. Ms Washington claims to have saved the Police Station even though it was never under threat. Then when the NSW Premier announced the upgrade, Ms Washington claimed she had secured the funding. Now she is telling people there is a massive funding shortfall,” Ms Cusack told News Of The Area. “It’s frustrating,... It is complete fiction,” she said. “Your local Tea Gardens Police and the Station are valued, secure and the upgrade is going ahead as promised,” Ms Cusack said.

Beach Access Permits Required WITH over 190km of pristine coastline, the MidCoast region is an ideal playground for every four wheel driving enthusiast - but not without a 2018/19 beach vehicle access permit required from 1 July. The start of the new financial year means it’s time to renew your beach vehicle access permit, available at your nearest Visitor Information Centre, Council Customer Service Centre, and some

local stores. Permit holders are required to protect our local flora and fauna by sharing the shore. Our beaches are home to a number of endangered shorebird species like the Little Tern, and vehicles can inadvertently destroy hidden nests, their eggs and baby chicks by driving above the high tide mark. For more information on where

to purchase a permit, guidelines for driving on beaches, and the rules that apply, visit www.midcoast. nsw.gov.au/beachpermit. The new team, Captains Ashleigh Dorney and Liam Garemyn, and Vice-Captains Madison Hurtado and Jordyn Watt, were officially inducted into their new positions at a formal ceremony held prior to the school holiday break. After taking their pledges and receiving their badges in front of MidCoast Mayor David West, the captains were each presented with a leadership medal from Myall Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead. Ashleigh said the team is proud to have been trusted with the responsibility of representing the student body, “I am very excited, and very honoured to be elected to the position,” she said. “It‘s about being a good role model for the younger students and also about working productively with both the staff and students.” As part of their duties, the new leaders will head the Student Representative Council, chair weekly assemblies, host school functions and represent the school in the wider community. Ashleigh said in the lead up to the school’s 150th anniversary celebrations occuring in

September, assisting with organisation for the weekend event will also be a large part of their role. “It is an important year for the school and community and it will be a great privilege to be involved,” she said. The new school leaders will hold their positions until the end of Term 2, 2019 allowing them to focus on their HSC studies during their final school term.

A Will-maker left a gift of approximately $4.5m to her nephew and his wife to create a trust to “benefit women and children in the United Kingdom”. The Will-maker was in the process of divorce at the time the Will was made and did not want her estate to go to her ex-husband or his children. A Trust known as the “Ellie Trust” was established in an effort to comply with the Will and the purpose of the trust was to “preserve and protect the mental and physical health of women and children who have suffered domestic violence through the provision of refuges and safe accommodation in Liverpool”.

www.mullanelindsay.com.au The Court was asked to declare

that despite the wording of the Will (which was vague) the terms of the Will allowed for the funds to be paid to the Ellie Trust. Judge Ward agreed and made the order. She found that the terms of the Will did evidence a “charitable purpose”. The Judge had to consider whether the failure to benefit the NSW community was fatal. However she determined it was sufficient benefit to NSW, in any event, that the Will set an “example of philanthropy” towards the welfare of women. The lesson to be learnt from this case is not that the Court managed to “save a gift” from failure but rather that it is preferable to frame charitable gifts with precision.

Asparagus fern not so good Asparagus fern can look very attractive at this time of year but it can be deadly to native vegetation.

ASPARAGUS fern can look very attractive at this time of year but it can be deadly to native vegetation. That was why eight volunteers from Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest Bitou Busters and Dune Care spent almost two hours on a cool and windy morning attacking it on dunes between the Surf Club and Jimmy’s Beach. Asparagus fern, which was introduced from Africa and is not to be confused with edible asparagus, had formed beautiful soft carpets of young plants covering an area the size of a football field, threatening native plants. Mature weeds can have twometre-long tendrils that strangle or smother the local vegetation. A Great Lakes Council survey revealed that more than 70 per cent of homes in Hawks Nest had asparagus fern in their garden, threatening suburban

germination of native plants including banksia, tuckeroo, tea tree, Guinea flower,

wattles and Dianella, which are all waiting for the chance to return the dune system to

gardens as well as bushland. Dune Care volunteer Michael Richie works in this area weekly but the menace has grown so much that he asked the local Bitou Busters to join him for a big clear up. So on Monday 2 July, five Bitou Busters joined the three Dune Care volunteers to attack the threat. Adrienne Ingram Bitou Buster Volunteer said, “For almost two hours the volunteers worked on their hands and knees using serrated knives to remove the hearts of the asparagus fern and they filled ten large bags with roots, tendrils and red berries.” “These were disposed of in red bins only as asparagus weed roots and seeds should not be composted or mulched as they can re-sprout,” she said. While working in the area, the volunteers found a rich

its former health. Bitou Buster coordinator Jill Madden said, “Once the

asparagus is removed they should never get this bad again.’’

GOOD mates Ron Stewart and Garry Boyd have both been busy putting pen to paper. The local authors are about to launch their new books. For Ron ‘Alien DNA’ is his third novel, while Garry has just finished his seventh work of fiction called ‘Back Track’. “It takes me about 12 months to write a novel,” Garry told News Of The Area. Speaking on behalf of Ron, Garry said ‘Alien DNA’ is about two young people

who decode a message from outer space, but before they can announce their momentous discovery the military intervene in the hope of cloning an alien.” “The young couple is worried that this action could lead to disastrous consequences for mankind”. And a synopsis of his own work ‘Back Track’, “Three year old Lucy Senter mysteriously disappears from her own birthday party and despite the efforts of Police and volunteers no trace is found of her,” Garry said.

“The novel delves into the seedy world of paedophilia, a cruel world of cover-ups, secrets and lies.” “A world where even those involved are not privy to all the threads

Ms HQ, Medowie Dear Ms HQ, OKAY, let me get this straight. There were 12 Wild Boars and a coach trapped in horrendous conditions for weeks, most of them couldn’t swim and even professional cave divers indicated how dire the conditions were in that cave, but Ms HQ from Medowie thinks that sedation was taking things a step too far. Sedation is viable in a number of situations, Ms HQ. Some of us would be much nicer if we were sedated on a permanent basis. When I had my first child I was all about lavender oil and water births and doulas wearing tiedyed shirts with a bit of whale music in the background thrown in for good measure, but that was until the contractions started. Fast forward 20 minutes and I was happy to take any prescription or non-prescription drug known to humankind. Sedation? Bring it on. If I am going on a long haul flight, I sedate myself with vodka shots, otherwise I start the self talk of being stuck in an enclosed space with complete strangers, hovering at over 30,000 feet with a vast expanse of ocean below and nothing to save us all from impending doom but that lifejacket somewhere under the seat that has a whistle not dissimilar to the ones found in Christmas Bon Bons. Oh, by the way, did you know those overhead oxygen masks only last for about 15 minutes? I’m hyperventilating just thinking about it. Sedating the boys would have made it far less traumatic and indeed much safer for the rescue team who were already battling water currents, tight spaces and vulture-like Hollywood directors without the need to throw in a few panic attacks. That’s what I think, Ms HQ. Thanks for asking. Carpe diem, Jasminda

THERE’S a new Pelican in Tea Gardens, but you won’t find him atop a pole or plying the river for supper. PK the Pelican is a larger than life work of art which now graces the outside wall of the Tea Gardens Hotel. The unveiling and naming of PK was held at a special afternoon champagne launch in the gardens of the Hotel. In the end there were three prize winning names for the pelican. The third runner up was Peli-Flyn, ‘The Duchess’ was second runner up in the naming stakes, but it was PK who took top honours. PK the Pelican was created by pub employee Tayla Maree Neilson. “It took hours of work, sometimes rain delayed,” Tayla Maree told News Of The Area. For Tayla Maree, who’s just completed a degree in medical science, art has always been a big part of her life. “I’ve always loved artwork, it was what funded me through uni, selling my works.” The owners of the hotel, Ben and Emily Hanson are thrilled with their new edition to the pub. “The original K was a fisherman who frequented the front bar,” Mr Hanson said. “When it came to naming the pelican we wanted it to about the fishing history of the town.” Tayla Maree climbed a ladder to sign off on her work at the end of the official naming ceremony. Then it was down to some serious celebrating with a big crowd of locals dancing the afternoon away.

THE Plough Inn at Bulahdelah has recently changed owners, and this weekend is the perfect time to head up the highway and see what they’re up to. New owner and manager Anthony Tan is still ‘new at

the helm’, but he’s hit the ground running and has some big plans. With plans to revitalise the iconic pub, Anthony said told News Of The Area in a recent interview that he is firmly focused on the business becoming an integral part of the community.

Anthony said showcasing local talent as part of the pub’s live entertainment program on Friday and Saturday nights is another area he is keen to expand. True to his word, James Naldo will take the stage this Friday 20 July from 8pm. Singer songwriter,

Tea Gardens Mens Bowling Club By The JAFFA

11 JULY Wednesday Nominated Triples took on a new look today with players decked out in football colours to support the “Blues” in the State of Origin match as well as the Mark Hughes’s Foundation appeal. Good weather greeted the 43 players taking part with 4 teams winning both games. The team of John Yabsley, Doug Naylor and Alan Greenhalgh prevailed, taking home the money on 57 points. 13 July Friday Open Pairs continued today with just 14 players participating. They played on the grass green which is now starting to take a bit of pace after the recent rains. Fields should increase next week when the Pennant season has concluded. 14 July The last match for Tea Gardens in the Newcastle District Saturday Pennant competition was played today with the Pelican Pest Control sponsored Grade 4 side playing away at East Maitland and the Pelican Pest Control sponsored Grade 6 side playing East Maitland at home. Both sides wanted to go out with a bang however it was left to the Grade 4 side to do the celebrating with a narrow 4 shot victory in enemy territory. The Jeff Baker team took the heat losing 17-30 after a poor start and never getting

q Tea Gardens Grade 4 side, with Pam Barry, (No. 1 fan) enjoying a win over East Maitland in the last round of Saturday Pennants. into the match until the 10th end. The Barry Drayton four trailed early but won 7 ends on the trot to clinch a 24-15 win. In contrast, the Keith Smith four led from start to finish winning 22-14. The final result; Tea Gardens 63, East Maitland 59.

Well done the 4’s! At home the Grade 6 side were well into the match establishing a good lead in the early stages. The opposing side found the tricky winds difficult to master and it was well into the afternoon that the challenge was put to the home side.

TO ALL THE HAWKS 2018 SPONSORS

Anthony Grant’s team led all the way in their game and although dropping a 5 on the last end they won 21-18. The Danny Johnson side were coping plenty with their opponents claiming too many 4-shot ends. They were defeated 1630. In the remaining game, the Ron James side were well into their match to the 15th end when they conceded an unfortunate 5. They faded after that winning only 2 of the last 7 ends and with 4 shots conceded on the last end, they lost 19-22. It was a marathon of a match lasting just short of 5 hours with 4 dead ends and some controversial

challenges over the length of the jack; all proving fallacious. 15 July It was a chilly early morning for the Sunday bowlers but 14 players turned up for a great day of bowls. The winners were; Pam Gilchrist, Beverley Thrift and Dot Montgomery. A fine sunny afternoon and no wind provided excellent conditions for the semi-finals of the Club Triples Championship. The Ben Brown trio, including Anthony Grant and Sean Mearrick were taking on the Keith Smith three, including Anthony Grant and Ross Barry. In the other game the Ron James team, including John

Younghusband and Daryl Martin, opposed the Barry Drayton side including Ron Webster and Col Amos. The results were as follows; The Ben Brown team won 29-11. The Barry Drayton team won 25-17. In other news: Next Sunday will see two finals played with the final of the Club Championship Triples between the Ben Brown team and the Barry Drayton trio, and the final of the interrupted Club Championship singles that sees Richard Lee leading Jeff Baker 11-4 when rain stopped play.

Newcastle District Open Pairs Competition Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club By Lynda RICHARDS TUESDAY 10th July: Despite cold and overcast conditions there was a good turn up of bowlers, all hoping to have a game of bowls. Before we ventured out to brace the elements president Robyn Webster welcomed back Dawn Jones, Dawn May and Dorothy Dallas and conveyed birthday greetings to Christine Fossey. Prior to play a “Spider” was contested. The winner of this was Jo Younghusband. Unfortunately the weather was the only winner today. Not many bowls were delivered when rain forced

us to retreat to the club house. The raffle was won by Dawn Jones, once again many thanks to Myall Bistro and Café for your donation of the raffle prize. Thursday 12th July: In contrast to Tuesday a perfect day for bowls, weather wise. Play was on the grass green a game of 3 bowls Pairs and a game of 3 bowls Triples, 12 ends. Winners of the Pairs were Pam Gilchrist and Lynda Richards 12 v Jo Younghusband and Jill McBride 6. A very close contest on the next rink. Judi Polak, Bette Saillard and Dale Winter just holding the lead all the way against Ingrid Luck, Dorothy Thompson and Lynne Green. Dale’s team

winning 8 v 7. Francis Betar, Bette Saillard, Lorraine Murphy and Loretta Baker bowled in The Versatility 5’s Competition held on the 6th & 7th July at Tuncurry Beach Women’s Bowling Club. A great experience for these ladies, no prize money though. District results: Quarter Finals of the Senior Pairs resulted in a loss for our TGWBC bowlers, Robyn Webster and Elizabeth Kelly lost to a team from Heaton Birmingham Gardens 16 v 11. Well done Robyn and Liz, you defeated some great bowlers to get so far in this district competition. What can be said about

Club Ladies Major Singles Championship Karuah Bowling Club By Trevor DAVIES BUSY days recently at the Karuah Bowling Club. Club Championships, Pennant Competitions, District finals, Gala Days and Annual General Meetings! RSL Club Secretary Manager Ross Parr said, “The RSL Club is very proud of its bowling club and their achievements, some great use has been made of our clubs grass green, widely recognised as the best on the coast.” The Ladies Club has seen the final of the clubs 2018 Ladies Pairs Championship, with Christine Davies and Merridie Rees getting up in a hard fought final, in front of a big crowd on the verandah, over Robyn Latimore and Lyn Cale. Chris and Merridie, best

mates, then had to play each other the next week in the first round of the club Ladies Major Singles Championship! Merridie said, “Chris and I just enjoy playing so being against each other for a change was great fun.” Chris came out in front in a game marked by club stalwart and very popular lady bowler Fay Barclay. There was some great bowling and good natured banter both on the green and from the big crowd on the verandah. The Men’s Pennant teams are playing as I write this for positions in the district finals. The clubs 4s team looks to have secured its spot, while the 6s are very close. While our 4s and 6s will play away the finals of the district 3s will make use of the best green available and will play their finals at Karuah next

weekend. 48 of the Newcastle districts best bowlers will descend on our club next weekend (21/22 Jul) to battle out the ownership of the 2018 Grade 3 District Pennant. Anyone wanting to watch this high quality team bowling is invited to come down to the club to spectate on both days. The Men’s AGM is on the last Sunday this month and competition for all positions indicates the healthy position of the club. The ongoing management of the club will see the great relationship with the Karuah RSL and the commitment to assisting new and transferring bowlers to embrace the game in the friendly environment at Karuah continue. Bowling is a great competitive and social sport for all ages, you should give it a try. See you at Karuah.

our Open Pairs team, Robyn Beaumont and Kayelene Pearson? I can not think of enough accolades. On Thursday 12th July at Mayfield West they bowled against Genevieve Delves and Natasha Scott from Raymond Terrace in the Open Pairs District Finals. Natasha Scott is a three-time world bowls champion and winner of a gold medal in the Triples at the Commonwealth games this year. Genevieve transferred to Raymond Terrace from Mona Vale and is well known in the bowling fraternity. Robyn and Kayelene put down some great bowls but the Raymond Terrace team proved to be too strong, final score 24 v 9. Motor Club Dungog Trip Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Motor Club By Juergen SEIL THE Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Motor Club staged a normal Club Run for their members. They are particular popular with members who operate their vehicles on H-Plate or Concessional registration. This time we went with 12 vehicles to the historic town of Dungog via Clarence

Town. It took one hour only to drive there in brilliant weather. We lined up the vehicles in front of the boutique Hotel/Pub called Settlers Arms just right across from the local RSL / Bowling Club. The members had a very enjoyable lunch there. After lunch many members explored the main street on foot to view the many old well preserved historic building in the main street. It is worthwhile for our local Tea Gardens residents to explore Dungog.

The Bears were leading 16-12 at half time but a very skilled combination and strong defence by Wests saw Newcastle secure the Premiership 28-16. Lilly-Ann still had plenty to celebrate. She finished the season as the top try scorer in u14’s Women’s Tackle. Two tries in the Grand Final took her season tally to 17 tries. After meeting and training with Canterbury Bulldogs NRL player, Candice Clay, Lilly-Ann is now inspired to see how far she can take her footy. “The best part of playing rugby league is the friendships I’ve made and the worst is having to play against your friends but it’s all fun,” Lilly-Ann said. Lilly-Ann will take a very short break from rugby league before training commences for the 9s competition in October. Lilly-Ann said ‘‘I’m excited to be a part of this growing rugby league competition for girls.” She’d like to encourage
