WITH just over three weeks until Christmas, Santa Claus has started making his list and checking it twice. Boys and girls can write to Santa and drop their letters off at any Australia Post Office in the Myall Coast Region for express delivery to Santa. Although Santa and the Elves are busy getting the sleigh and reindeers ready for Christmas, the bearded man in red has promised to send a reply to every child who writes to him. Tea Gardens Post Office Manager Monica Back said they are always kept busy in the leadup to Christmas sending all the letters to Santa.

are suffering from stress or illness or who simply just need a break would also benefit from this offer. Executive Officer Errol Curran said serving as a primary caregiver is a selfless job. “Full-time carers are on call 24/7 and it can be quite demanding,” he said. “More often or not, carers do not get to do the things they need or want to do, so the free respite will give people the opportunity to have a break and refresh.” Mr Curran told News Of The Area residents taking up the free respite offer can expect the same high-standard of care given to any other resident of the facility. “It is person-centred care that is based upon the individual’s needs,” he said. “It’s about providing the intensive care that carers are responsible for so they can take some time for themselves and rejuvenate.” The free respite care program was first offered in 2012 and Mr Curran said there had been a great response in the past. “If you’re thinking about it, get in sooner rather than later so that you’re not disappointed if there are no vacancies,” he said. The program is funded through a Federal Government subsidy so there are no costs, fees or hidden charges. A minimum period of one week applies.

AT last week’s MidCoast Council meeting, Administrator John Turner gave the go-ahead to notify the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) of its intention to apply for a special rate variation (SRV). Independent researchers Jetty Research are currently undertaking phone surveys with randomly selected MidCoast residents in relation to the SRV proposal. The survey can also be taken online at ‘Have your say’ on the MidCoast Council website. Concerns over the backlog of maintenance and repair work to MidCoast roads and bridges is behind

Council’s decision to apply for the SRV. Council estimate $150 million is needed to address the backlog of work and have identified a $5 million shortfall in funding per year for sealed roads. Council believes the proposed five percent rate rise over four years will achieve the funding level required to fix the growing list of infrastructure repairs. This includes a rate increase of 2.5 percent each year for the rate-peg as specified by IPART and 2.5 percent each year for roads and bridges. Interim General Manager Glenn Handford said through efficiencies

and savings identified since the merger, Council has earmarked $18 million for roads and bridges over the next four years. “This alone is simply not enough,” he said. “If we don’t take action now to increase our rates income, our community will see further deterioration of our road and bridge infrastructure and an ongoing increase in the asset backlog.” The online survey will remain open until 4.30pm on Monday 5 December. Council expects to lodge their formal application for the SRV in February 2017.

Letters are usually delivered to Santa’s Workshop at the North Pole, but Mrs Dixon told News Of The Area Santa Claus will be visiting some of the local Post Offices to personally reply. Getting crafty IT’S called ‘Time Out for Skills,’ and it happens every fourth Friday of the month. The premise is simple. Invite locals and residents of nearby nursing homes to gather together for a morning of craft and creation. Making it happen every month, however, takes lots of time, organisation and dedication on the part of the volunteers from the Tea Gardens Baptist Church. “We try with all the crafts to make them as easy as possible,” Ruth Calcutt

told News Of The Area. “We have a team of people from the Church, they help people as some are visually impaired and others who just can’t manage it, but we make sure everyone goes home with something,” Ruth said. HERE’s a Christmas tale of giving and sharing which is sure to touch a chord in everyone’s heart. Every year, as they’ve done for the past 15 years, Tea Gardens residents Sue and Joe Douglas issue an open invitation to join them for a Christmas Day lunch. And every year around 70 to 100 people take them up on their offer. The couple has struggled with ill health over the past few months so they’ve been worried they may not get the word out. But if you’re looking for somewhere and someone to share your Christmas Day then Sue and Jo have the solution.

“We serve a traditional Christmas Lunch, pork, ham and turkey, plum pudding, fruit salad and custard, ” Sue told News Of The Area. To finish off the feast, fruit cake with coffee or tea. The cost for the lunch is just $10 a head. Sue and Joe, who are both pensioners, get donations and support from local businesses to help put the Christmas lunch together in the Tea Gardens Masonic Hall. “Last year we had around 75 people to cater for,” Sue said. “Everyone gets a present and there’s also a lucky door prize.” So if you’re looking for a special way to spend your Christmas Day then contact Sue on 0430 363 046.

riverbanks and loss of aquatic vegetation,” they say. “Carp are also thought to be indirectly responsible for declines in native fish populations.” Mr Bidgood said as far as he is aware, this is the first European Carp caught in the river. “The catch is unusual because it’s the first and only one found in the area, there’s been a few Koi Carp found in the past but no European Carp,” he said. “If we just left it and it breeds, it will completely destroy the ecosystem.” Mr Bidgood encourages all members of the public to report any carp catches to the DPI. “It is really important that we find out how many more there are because we don’t want the river destroyed,” he said. Mr Bidgood told News Of The Area he was fishing upstream from the Bulahdelah Bridge in the Mid North Coast Freshwater Titles when he snagged the European Carp on a 4lb line.

Boot of Treasure

By Margie TIERNEY

WITH Christmas just a few weeks away, time is running out when it comes to finding that perfect gift for someone special at a price that won’t break the bank. But help is at hand. This Saturday 3 December, the Tea Gardens Baptist Church is holding its annual Trash and Treasure Car Boot Sale. There will be something for everyone from jewellery to CDs, DVDs toys and dolls, antiques and bric-a-brac stalls. There’ll also be plenty of plants to freshen up your garden. “The whole church gets behind the Car Boot Sale,” organiser Sue Roberts told New Of The Area. “Everybody does a little bit.”

“There are people who put up the gazebos, then there’s the catering, organising the stalls, the selling, cleaning up afterwards, everyone gets involved,” Sue said. There is a free morning tea and a $2 sausage sizzle to whet the appetite. The Trash and Treasure is now in its third year with all money raised going to the missions. There are still vacancies if you would like to participate as a stall holder. To book a site or for any inquiries call Sue on 0403 233 000. The Trash and Treasure is being held in the grounds of the Myall Street Baptist Church this Saturday between 8.30am and noon.

A NEW ceramic mosaic reflecting the local area has recently been unveiled at Karuah Public School. Teacher Kathi Henry was the inspiration behind the artwork which was created by students with support from the wider community. The mosaic was designed by local award-winning artist TJ Saunders who is a former student of the school. Speaking with News Of The Area, TJ said he has a passion for creating Indigenous-inspired artworks which reflect things that are important to him. “My hometown is special to me because it has a long Aboriginal history and I wanted to show that in the

mosaic,” he said. “The design reflects the past and present and combines symbols and images of the school, waterways and marine life showing Karuah’s environment and people of the community.” The fourteen-year-old said he was very honoured to have designed the mosaic and is proud to represent the school and display his cultural background. With a little help from the community, a dozen students volunteering in Friday Interest Groups transformed TJ’s design into the completed artwork. Mrs Henry said Desley Voigt from Tea Gardens Community Art Centre assisted with the project. “We visited the centre

Celebration of Singing Funding boost for

ON Saturday 3 December at 7.30pm the Myall U3A Choir is performing its annual Concert in the Hawks Nest Community Hall. A donation of $5, payable at the door, will secure a seat and supper after the concert. “The concert will include a variety of musical genres, from songs of reflection to joyful foot-tapping music,” Lyn Chaikin said. “The concert is a celebration of community singing [with] playful folk songs, beautiful lullabies and haunting laments, as well as our usual Christmas Carols and beloved hymns.” The concert celebrates life through music, including music from bygone days when history was kept alive in the folk music tradition of

the day. “2017 will be a special year for the choir, when it will celebrate its 29th anniversary,” Ms Chaikin said. Barbara Lyle has been music director for 10 of those years. Barbara also sings with the Newcastle University Choir and she is involved in many other activities in Tea Gardens. “This year, we want to pay tribute to Barbara for her dedication to the choir,” Ms Chaikin told News Of The Area. “Margaret Rowden has been our accompanist since 2009 when she took over from Wilma Black. The choir would also like to acknowledge Wilma and

Margaret’s commitment to the choir.” The choir welcomes all newcomers and meets for practice each Wednesday afternoon at 2pm during term time. The choir also sings at the ANZAC and Remembrance day services and occasionally for the Dolphins Friday group. If you wish to experience the joy of singing in harmony and learning basic vocal technique you are welcome to join. “It has been proven that singing improves health and well being. Everyone can sing!” Ms Chaikin said. Registration Day for the U3A is 20 January 2017 from 9am at the Community Hall, Hawks Nest.

Yellow was worn to honour ‘Fran’

Dear News Of The Area,

THE Wednesday Tennis ladies wore yellow in honour of their friend ‘Fran’. We attended the funeral service for Francis Long on Tuesday which was excellently conducted by one of our tennis players, Susan Carter, at Fran’s request. One hundred and fifty family and friends attended the service held at the Newcastle Memorial Park, Beresfield. Fran’s grandchildren, Johanna and Peter, spoke about the close bond and admiration they held for their grandmother. Tim, her son, read his father Bob’s story, “My Life with Fran”.

OPINION

THE Thursday Walkers’ penultimate walk for the year was a local one on a track heading out from Lions Hill. Michael led us out and into the bush. Some track, some bush bashing. It was a lovely morning and we all managed the at times challenging walk with ease. Note to self, remember to take the poles. You never know when they will come into their own. Juxtaposed against spectacular artworks created by nature was the eyesore of dumped rubbish left by humans. Is it just me turning into a cranky old woman, or are we

Thanks must go to our wonderful leaders for this year, Ray and Cherry, who willingly took on this mantle. Hopefully they will be happy to give it another go. Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA 23 November WITH the temperature hovering in the low thirties, it was a hot day on the green for the 48 or so bowlers competing in the Wednesday nominated Triples. A couple of late scratchings necessitated playing two games of pairs. It was the formidable Pairs team of Ron Green and Mark Hair that won the money. They finished on +19. The Triples team of Daryl Martin, Col Amos and Keith Smith also had +19 but lost on a count-back. The Palm Lake combination of Brian Newbury, Neil Kibble and

THE final of the Open Consistency Competition was contested on Tuesday 22 November. Maynie Roberts versed Vicki Rankin. Everyone present knew that it was going to be a very tight competition and these two players didn’t prove us wrong. Vicki and Maynie proceeded to thrill the spectators with a magnificent display of draw-bowling. The game went to 30 ends. By the ninth end Vicki had a lead of 14 shots. This was to be the highest difference in the score for the game. At the 14th end, after some great bowling, Maynie was winning by two shots. For the next six ends play was fairly even, but Vicki regained the lead by six shots on the 20th end. Maynie fought back,

the score on the 28th end was Maynie 144 v Vicki 136. But this game was definitely not over, Vicki scoring 9 on the 29th end making the score even both at 145 shots. By this stage spectators were sitting on the edge of their seats. The 30th end would see the end of the competition and there can only be one winner. The final result had Vicki Rankin 151 defeating Maynie Roberts 149. Congratulations Vicki and to both competitors your skilful bowling was a pleasure to watch. Thanks to Umpire Kathie Rimmer, controlling body Karen Green and marker Robyn Webster. On a lesser note, social bowls played on the day one game of triples and two games of fours. The winners with most ends were Francis Betar, Jo Younghusband and Wendy Brand. Welcome to our newest member Ingrid Luck who transferred from Lawson Bowling Club.

On Thursday 24 November the annual event Secretary v President Competition was held. This is a fun day of bowls, teams randomly selected either representing the Secretary or the President. Format for play was triples. This year victory went to the President’s team scoring 101 v Secretary’s 79. Prior to play Lorraine Harvey won her first “Spider”. Following the game everyone enjoyed a picnic lunch. Thank you to the Social Committee Wendy Jones, Francis Betar and Sheril Johnson for making the scrumptious sandwiches and all the other chores you do. Your hard work is much appreciated. Also, thanks to all the ladies who provided the delicious slices. Birthday greetings to Robyn Beaumont. Upcoming events: Presentation Night 5 December and Breakup Day 8 December.
