It Pays To Recycle By Daniel SAHYOUN
q Jack Cunich will receive 10 cents for every aluminum can he collects from 1 December.
IN just over four months, Jack Cunich could be sitting on a gold mine, thanks to the NSW Government’s container deposit scheme. Under the new program, Jack will be rewarded with more than $6 for every kilogram of aluminium cans he redeems, up from the 70 cents a kilogram he currently receives. Jack said his desire to protect the environment inspired him to set up a mini community recycling system a few years ago, with the added bonus of earning some extra pocket money. “So many things that can be recycled get thrown out with the rubbish or left behind in parks, so every little bit you do helps the

the twin towns could benefit from a five year plan to interconnect the community. “Off-road (where possible) cycle and walkways
across the villages would allow safe passage between all the tourist attractions and retail and commercial centres,” Ken said.
“The outcomes of such a network would be the ability to cycle or walk in safety from anywhere in Tea Gardens or Hawks Nest.

Member for Myall Lakes, Stephen Bromhead, said the scheme will provide a funding bonanza for community groups and charities. ‘‘These groups already
do great work in our communities, so I’m sure that this great new fundraising opportunity will be welcome,’’ he said. ‘‘Every year in NSW around 160 million drink containers are tossed into our environment, making up about 49 per cent of all litter volume, and costing about $180 million to clean up.” From 1 December, anyone who hands in an eligible drink bottle or container at a designated collection point will be rewarded with a 10 cent refund, Mr Bromhead said

Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie has also committed to writing to the State Minister for Lands, Paul Toole.

By Margie TIERNEY LETTERS keep flying back and forth between our local politicians and community groups to get some action in regards to dredging the ‘The Gut’, but so far with little success.
The Myall River at Tea Gardens hasn’t been dredged since 1961. But, as is often the case, red tape and responsibility for the cost of the dredge is being batted back and forth between government departments and
MidCoast Council. Community groups, in particular, the Myall River Action Group, are keeping up the pressure. Crown Lands collects the mooring fees from boat owners in the area, but has denied responsibility for
dredging the area, putting the onus back on MidCoast Council. Port Stephens MP Kate Washington has written to the State Minister for Lands and Forestry Paul Toole. “It is common sense that boat owners who

by Felicity Wardhaugh Relationships can be tricky. Sometimes a relationship can apparently come to an end but the parties keep seeing each other and remain close. In a recent case of Wilson v Porada; The Estate of Peter Wolfgang Porada, late of Pericoe [2017] NSWSC 818 a male died leaving no Will. His only family was his siblings who were due to inherit under intestacy law (ie where no Will). He had complained to friends that his former partner would not get “out of my life”. The former partner told the Court that the deceased stayed at her place about three or four times a week and they remained in a relationship until he died. Whilst the
Court accepted that on the balance of the evidence, the parties were no longer in a de facto relationship, the Court nevertheless did order that the former partner should receive a gift from the estate. The Judge found that the deceased had chosen to maintain a civil relationship with his ex de facto partner for the sake of her children and despite the aggravation and anxiety from her persisting with him, he still chose to allow her a place in his life. He consented to her organising social functions with him and having some degree of a life together. Whilst writing a Will would not necessarily have been a complete answer to this claim, it would have helped.

HALF a century! It’s a long time in anyone’s life. To devote 50 years to community service is a milestone well worthy of recognition and reward. The Reverend Ray Longmuir has done just that, recently notching up his 50th anniversary as a member of Rotary. 84-year-old Ray, who is currently a member of the Myall Coast Rotary Club first joined the Tamworth West Club on late June, 1967. “He followed his calling as a Minister and moved from church posting to church posting,” Rotary’s Ian
Mackenzie-Smith told News Of The Area. “Accompanied by his wife Lois, of now nearly 55 years of wedded bliss, Ray moved from Tamworth to Casino, Tuggerah Lakes, Baulkham Hills, Kiama and then Tea Gardens, joining the local Rotary Club each time.” Reverend Longmuir became a Rotarian to his boot laces. “At the time of the last move, there was not a Rotary Club here in Tea Gardens so Ray joined the Raymond Terrace Club, transferring here when this Club was chartered in 2003,” Ian said.

PERSISTENCE and tenacity have paid off for Karuah local Peter James in his quest to create a community garden. After years of hard work, funding has finally been approved to rebuild the garden in the heart of Karuah. Peter has been working to bring the project to fruition since Karuah was by-passed by the
highway back in 2007. “After the Karuah Bypass, the town lost most of its fame as a truckers and travellers rest spot and soon became known as the ‘Lost Highway’, Peter said. “A few locals banded together to try and revive it with cottage industry attractions.” “The Community Garden was initially established by the Information Centre under the guidance and leadership of local

After lots of research and personal testing, Peter came up with the plan for an organic garden using above ground methods that incorporate, ‘No Dig Raised Self Watering Wicking Beds, Container Global Grow Buckets, Permaculture and

Aquaponics. He regained community support, and put his plan to Council for grant funding under the supervision of the ‘Karuah Working Together Committee’. ‘’This will reduce wasted labour and other expenses with a far higher yield of fresh organic produce for our local people.’’ Now all he needs are extra hands. A Working Bee has been organised for this weekend Saturday 22 July and Sunday 23 July starting at 9am. Anyone who would like to assist should head to the Karuah Information Centre or contact Peter James on 0499 116334.

Funds For Skate Park Plans for the new Skate Park in Bulahdelah are moving forward with the Lions Club continuing to work towards achieving their $250,000 funding target.
By John SAHYOUN
PLANS for the new Skate Park in Bulahdelah are moving forward with the Lions Club continuing to work towards achieving their $250,000 funding target. A Commonwealth Government Grant injected $50,000 into the project. Federal Member for Lyne, Dr David Gillespie, said he was pleased to provide the funding which will significantly benefit the local community. The Lions Club are the driving force behind the project, which is supported by Council, community groups and local schools. Lion, Arthur Baker, said they want young people to take ownership of the new park. “We will raise the funds, but it will be constructed from the ideas of the youth,” he said. Some of the ideas generated from students at the recent hands-on workshop included a skate bowl, half pipe and separate spaces for both beginners and more advanced riders.
MidCoast Council Community Engagement Officer, Sarah Wilkinson, said they also gathered
suggestions about other items that could be implemented to the rest of Mountain Park.

ACCORDING to the BeyondBlue website, research shows that three million Australians are living with some form of anxiety or depression, but there is help available as BeyondBlue provides information and support to help everyone in Australia achieve their absolute best possible mental health, whatever their age and wherever they

“These ideas included play equipment for bigger kids, basketball and netball rings, BMX dirt track and a smaller children’s learn to ride track,” she said. The Lions Club have been working on the project for four years, and have been overwhelmed by the support, pledges and donations received from
local businesses. Arthur said in order to reach their funding target and make the project a reality, more donations are needed. “The end result of the project is to provide Bulahdelah with a premier skate park facility,” he said. live. In particular, men in our society are renowned for bottling up their problems and fears and sometimes feel that by talking about their demons are perhaps not demonstrating their malehood in not being able to deal with their anxieties. BeyondBlue recommends that when you are feeling down, taking action to call in extra
support is the responsible thing to do – not only for yourself but for your family and friends who, when they hear the “cry for help”, may be in a position to help in some small way even if it is just a chat over a cup of coffee. Trying to deal with your anxieties alone can actually increase the risk of depression going unrecognised and untreated
and the frightening statistics of one in eight men will experience depression and one in five men will experience anxiety at some stage throughout their lives, are quite depressing in themselves. Effectively managing your mental health with the help and support that now exists in your own community, can have a more positive impact on your quality of life, increase your own personal strength allowing you to become an integral part of your family

and your mates which in turn can allow you to perform at your absolute best on a daily basis. The local Rugby Union side, the Myall Coast Mudcrabs, supports the wonderful work that BeyondBlue provides to everyone in our own community and the country at large and to that end will be hosting a BeyondBlue Fundraiser afternoon at the forthcoming match against the Wallamba Bulls, Saturday, 22 July 2017 with kickoff at 3.00pm.

Laughing Your Way To Good Health By John SAHYOUN MAINTAINING health and wellbeing is one of the biggest challenges of aging, but the Bulahdelah Social Group is proving that by staying active, you can chuckle your way good health. The group meet regularly and take part in a range of activities including bowls,
bocce, croquet, darts, cards and quizzes, which are always accompanied by smiles and fits of laughter. There are also theme days and bus trips to the movies, shopping and concerts to keep the members active. Coordinator, Diane Burns, said the group was formed in 2009 to provide social contacts for the aged, frail,
isolated and people living alone. “It began with a small band of ladies, and almost 10 years on, has tripled in number,” she said. “It targets men and women over the age of 65 years who can meet socially, make new friends and enjoy each other’s company.” The sessions include

FRED McInerney, representative of the ‘Karuah Lost Highway Bluegrass Festival” presented a cheque for $1000 to the Captain of the Karuah Fire Brigade, Jim Semple.
The festival committee thanks the Local Karuah Fire brigade for their support of the festival in 2017. Without local support it would be impossible to hold such an event. We hope that the money
goes towards much needed equipment. The Karuah Brigade are always there when times are tough through fire or flood working hard to help our community. We thank you.

Four Games of Triples Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club By Lynda RICHARDS
ANOTHER great day of the enjoyment of bowling for the ladies on Tuesday 11 July. Four games of Triples, 18 ends played. On Rink 2, Dawn May, (visiting bowler from Castle Hill), Pam Gilchrist and Lynda Richards v Carolyn Bywater, Francis Betar and Jill McBride. This was a very close contest on the 17th end, “even Stevens” but my team scored seven points on the last end, unbelievable! I think we had luck on our side. Final score 14 v 21. On the next Rink Dawn Jones, Ingrid Luck and Loretta Baker were struggling against Pauline Perry, Kerry Faber and Carol Hayden. It was great to see Pauline back at bowls, she has been absent due to a shoulder injury. Pauline requested to play only half a game due to just “coming back”. Well she bowled deadly and then Dorothy Thompson
stepped in to finish the game for her and Dorothy bowled equally well. Loretta’s team lost by 10 shots. Dorothy Dallas, Lily Smith and Karen McPhie were not having a good day either against Wilma Drake, Sheril Johnson and Wendy Jones. Karen’s team 9 v Wendy’s 21. Bev Dunn, Bette Saillard and Maynie Roberts also had a good win over Dianne Kiss, Bev Stephens and Dale Winter. Final score 26 v 12. The win was to be granted for shots plus ends. Two teams tied so the winner was determined by margins. The winning team was Bev Dunn, Bette Saillard and Maynie Roberts. Luckily the rain dispersed on Thursday 13 July and a small group of lady bowlers played. Just two games of Triples with Ingrid Luck playing “swinger” lead for Lynda Richards and Elizabeth Kelly opposing Karen Green and Karen McPhie. This game could have gone to either team but on
the last end Elizabeth’s team gained 5 shots, giving them victory 14 v 10. Dorothy Thompson, Sheril Johnson and Maynie Roberts also had a close contest against Bette Saillard, Bev Stephens and Loretta Baker. Loretta’s team winning 13 v 11.
The winner for the day determined by the lowest score was Loretta’s team. Club Championship Triples commences on the 15 August, drawn 8 August. Just a reminder, Sunday Mixed Bowls continues all welcome. Bowl to great music,
Club for their ongoing support. Last week, the Country Club supplied all the necessary ingredients for delicious hotdogs and snacks
on State of Origin night. The young footy players helped out with the cooking while all proceeds went to the Hawks Rugby League Club.
If you were a New South Wales Supporter, the score could certainly have been reversed. But there’s always next year.

Bill Moon and Stewart Sturrock fired the most volleys winning by a huge margin of 22 shots. They did not take any prisoners! Seven winning margins competed for the jackpot but unfortunately it did not go off. Fabulous Friday Open Jackpot Pairs is growing in popularity. CONTINUED Page 12
