“The most driving factor is the wish to give back something to the community.” Tony believes that others have the additional motivation of learning new skills, or in putting current skills to a useful purpose. “All want the companionship that an organisation like Marine Rescue offers,” he said. The Unit’s social committee organises a number of social functions throughout the year so that members can socialise and enjoy each other’s company.

The trip on the Riverboat Postman was one such occasion where around 60 members and some partners joined the bus to the Hawkesbury River. The Riverboat Postman is a formal Australian Post Office service which commenced in 1910. Today it still delivers mail to the river communities such as Dangar Island as it did back in the early days. The Skipper gives a fascinating commentary throughout the journey along the river focusing on life today as well as a rich and fascinating history. A big surprise for the MRPS group was being shown the wreck of HMAS Parramatta on the banks of the river. This was the first Naval Ship purchased for the Royal Australian Navy in 1910 and it saw service in the Gallipoli area (Suvla Bay)

The thirty Ikara-Flinders Ranges Champions will include corporate, Indigenous, University and community leaders who will be like-minded, determined and dynamic people who are ready to take on a challenge to help others. Each day promises to be tough with the walk ranging from nineteen kilometres set at a moderate grade to twenty five kilometres set at a more challenging grade, however, walkers will be able to focus on the trek itself with all food and accommodation organized which means that trekkers will only need to carry their own backpack and water each day. When News Of The Area asked Robert how he heard about the challenge, he said, “I have

never participated in anything like this before and became involved in the challenge when my brother, Mervyn who is also part of the challenge, encouraged me to join. “My personal goal is to complete the walk and to hopefully raise more money than Merv but there is definitely no competition!” On this once in a lifetime hike, walkers will experience the arid heart of the Australian outback by foot, traversing one of the oldest geological landscapes in the world and at the same time meet some of the locals, experience their culture and meet Indigenous representatives of the local Adnyamathanha people. Individual fundraising goal for this walk is $3500.00 and these funds will impact on a life change for Indigenous Australians so if you would like to support champion Robert Lindsay in his adventure, go to newcastle. edu.au/ikara and click on the ‘Donate Now’, Choose a Champion to support and follow the

during WWI. It also served in New Guinea where it was on patrol with the Submarine AE1 when it was lost. Our boat crew members on-board naturally took the opportunity to quiz the Skipper on boat things. The outing was great for the members of MRPS providing the opportunity to share such a fascinating experience with each other. MRPS is a 24/7/365 organisation. The service to those who go out on the water never stops. Most of the time, although we are busy, the work can be routine. In an emergency, the pressure is on. Although we have a membership of about 200 people, due to rostering and the various job functions, we can go months without seeing an individual member.

A woman died unexpectedly in a car accident. A month before the accident she had handwritten a new Will. She told her girlfriends that, having separated from her husband she was keen to make sure he did not inherit anything from her. She made it known that all her important documents were in a filing cabinet or a camphor wood chest at her home. On the day of her accident, her home was broken into and the filing cabinet was forced open and ransacked. The original Will was not found. Where an original Will is not found it is no longer a valid Will since the law presumes that the Willmaker intended to destroy

it. In this case, the Judge was prepared to find that the unusual circumstances of the break-in on the day of the accident rebutted this presumption (ie he did not assume that the Will had been destroyed). A girlfriend had a copy of the Will and this copy was held to be a valid informal Will. However, the woman’s family had to go to the Supreme Court to obtain court orders to this effect. A lot of expense and delay could have been avoided if the Will had not been kept at home. Solicitors as part of their service for drafting Wills usually offer safe custody of Wills free of charge -a service well worth considering. (see Re Webster [2019] VSC 28)

q

the serene local beaches and the tranquil countryside of The Hunter Valley close by, both of which have influenced her writing. Jasmine will be visiting Tea

Gardens Library on 23 August from 2.30pm to 3.30pm and Harrington Library on 24 August from 10.30am to 11.30am, to chat about writing ‘Waiting for you’ and her love of reading. The book tells the story of Charlotte Denver who left the quaint country town of Holbrook 18 years ago, after a tragic accident. Now, she's back in town to renovate her old family home, which will feature in the magazine where

she's employed as a journalist. Making the rundown house sellable, will allow Charlotte to sever all ties with her tragic past and finally move forward with her life. That is until the one person she'd spent all these years trying to forget is contracted by her magazine’s Editor to help her complete the job. Will Beckett's no longer the twelve year old kid who used to play practical jokes on her, tease her and make her belly laugh. Now he's a ruggedly handsome, sweet talking, successful builder. Will never thought he would see his best friend again, but now she's back, as stubborn and strong-willed as ever. Her return reminds him all over again of everything she lost because of him, and he desperately wants her forgiveness. Can Will break through Charlotte's wall of defence or will his heart be broken again? “We have so many romance fans across the MidCoast who we know will love this author talk,” said Chris Jones, MidCoast Council Libraries Manager. “Jasmine is certainly one to watch and this book has been getting great reviews, so get some friends together and come along.” Jasmine’s Author talks are free but bookings are essential. Finding Frogbit

Progress Report By Gordon GRAINGER THE Hawks Nest / Tea Gardens Progress Association (TGHNPA) met on Monday 12 August and was addressed by members of the Family Research Group. They are working with “Trove” who are part of the National Library of Australia involved in digitalising historical newspaper, magazine and other print articles from the past. So far Nota publications from 1970 to 1984 have been digitalised and can be freely accessed by inserting “Trove” into Google and following the links. Further funding is needed to complete the project and the Group meets weekly each Saturday 9:30—11 :30 am and the first and third Mondays in the month. Meetings are now held at the Tea Gardens Library. Naming of the public wharves is progressing, with the addition of the ferry wharf to be named “Yalinbah” in recognition of a vessel which engaged in transporting passengers, mail and groceries within the Port, River and Lakes. Letters of support have been forthcoming from community groups for submission to Council and the NSW Naming Board. The Lions Club has appointed Peter Webb as President and amongst their many projects have elected to pursue the boardwalk track from Peter Sinclair Gardens to Winda Woppa. The Progress Association has some background to the project and will assist Lions where possible. The Sand Transfer System for the stabilisation of Jimmys Beach is at the handover stage, having moved 53K tonnes of sand through the trialling program. It has improved the beach profile and provide protection to the houses and roadway. The sand stockpile will need replenishment in the face of summer lows and Council is urged to bring forward dredging of the natural channel no later than early 2020 as this channel is rapidly closing and must not be allowed to return to the poor condition it was in prior to October 2015. The next meeting will be held Uniting Church Hall 9th September 7pm

IT’S the second time in two years that aquatic weed Amazon Frogbit has been found in the Great Lakes, and this time credit goes to a Bulahdelah café visitor for the discovery. In 2017, the discovery of this ecosystem destroyer in a natural area near Forster was a first for NSW. It triggered an emergency response under the Biosecurity Act 2015, with MidCoast Council working closely with Hunter Local Land Services, the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI). In April this year, John de Bruyn was visiting a Bulahdelah cafe with his family. "While there my 10 year old son, who loves looking at leaves and nature, picked a few leaves from a water-plant in the courtyard pond. He was intrigued at the difference between the smooth green tops and the spongey air pockets underneath that apparently kept the leaves floating on the water surface. As usual he insisted on picking a few specimens and showed them to us, but I thought no more about it." At work on Monday, John glanced at MidCoast Council's weed calendar - and there, featuring on the monthly image was the same leaf his son had shown him on the weekend. John rang the hotline and reported, although he says he was concerned the café owners might get into trouble for unsuspectingly harbouring a biosecurity threat. "I was assured that the aim was not to prosecute people, but rather to stop the selling of this weed as a decorative water plant to discontinue its spread," he says. MidCoast Council, the NSW DPI and Hunter LLS worked together with the café owners and sourced the plant to a Bulahdelah property. That landowner was also unaware of the infestation of Frogbit, and with everyone working together, the team was able to contain the plant, before it spread to a nearby high-value and protected wetland. Amazon Frogbit originates from fresh water habitats of tropical and subtropical Central and South America. Although in the early stages of establishment in Australia, these weeds have the potential to seriously degrade Australia’s ecosystems if left untreated. In Australia, the weed is often purchased illegally online, on sites such as Gumtree and eBay, by unsuspecting aquarium owners and can spread to natural waterways accidentally or via deliberate dumping of garden and aquarium waste. We advise consumers to "do your homework" before purchasing any plant online, as you could be purchasing prohibited matter. "We're calling on local aquarium owners and those who have ponds or dams on their properties to assist us over the next few weeks to help eradicate Frogbit from our local area" says Council's Strategic Weeds Biosecurity

q

Officer, Terry Inkson. "If you suspect you might have found Amazon Frogbit, please contact us at once, on 6591 7222 for advice and a meeting." There are extremely heavy fines for offences committed under the Biosecurity Act 2015. Even purchasing prohibited plants online could place you at risk. "However, we're more interested in locating and destroying this serious weed than penalising people who may have been unaware they were committing an offence," says Terry. With this in mind, we are announcing an amnesty for anyone who calls us before 30 November 2019 - we will not fine you if you

report the weed and all calls will be treated as confidential. And we're very grateful for the great community members who make the effort to report weeds to Council - John de Bruyn has been recognised by the NSW DPI for his contribution to halting the spread of Frogbit in NSW. You can read more about his efforts and others at dpi.nsw.gov.au/biosecurity/ your-role-in-biosecurity/be-a-biosecuritywarrior. that Level 1 – Moderate water restrictions will be needed very soon, perhaps as early as the beginning of September.” “If the weather that is forecasted eventuates, we’re modelling for the possibility of Level 4 – severe restrictions by October – right across the MidCoast region.” An average year would have seen 802mm of rainfall on the MidCoast for the year up to 1 August. This year we’ve received 308mm. Understandably, people ask lots of questions about how and when water restrictions are introduced, and the system is complex. We have an established system and trigger levels for introducing water restrictions, which are part of a larger NSW standardised system. If you have questions, please visit www.midcoast.nsw.gov.au/ waterrestrictions. There’s a chance to ask any questions you have, if they’re not answered there. The Summer Water Savers message is ‘don’t spray in the middle of the day’ and in addition to sensible outdoor water use, encourages everyone to try to save water

MIDCOAST Council is urging residents and visitors to put the summer water savers program into action early – in fact, before winter ends. Normally introduced around early October, a prolonged drought in NSW is taking its toll and MidCoast Council is launching its ‘summer water savers’ message now, and warning that water restrictions will be introduced soon. “For now, we’re urging everyone to be water-wise, conserve water wherever you can and follow our summer water savers tips,” says Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Rob Scott. “Our Water Services team initially thought restrictions would be necessary during this winter, but through good management, a great response from the community in conserving water use, and some very fortunate light rainfall, we were able to avoid restrictions during the winter months,” added Mr Scott. GOL100 “However, our environmental and engineering experts are closely monitoring river flows, long term forecasts for rainfall and water use figures, and it’s very apparent

inside and out at home. “We’ve produced a handy summer water savers fact sheet to guide residents on the program,” said Mr Scott. In addition, visit www.midcoast.nsw.gov.au/savewater for
