Pay Rise Lost To Penalty Cuts By John SAHYOUN MILLIONS of the nation’s lowest paid workers will get a weekly pay rise of $22.20 from 1 July. Under the decision from the Fair Work Commission, the 3.3 percent increase equates to an additional 59 cents an hour, lifting the

said he has experienced both sides of the penalty coin. “In my early 20s, I loved that I could work weekends and get a great hourly pay rate as opposed to working through the week,” he said. “From a business point of view, the change is welcome in winter months when things are much quieter, but at the same time, I understand that employees do need to work weekends, which is time away from their families.” In the local tourism environment, Les said some businesses have reduced their winter trading hours to avoid running at a loss. “In the quieter months, takings can be less than a quarter of what we get in summer,” he said. “Most businesses still see people roll in during winter, but nowhere near as many as summer, and we still need to encourage

The decision was a disaster and they’re now regarded as one of Australia’s most damaging and invasive species. They can now be found throughout coastal and northern Queensland, northern New South Wales and increasingly through the Northern Territory and north Western Australia. Poison in their glands is toxic to pets and most native predators. Cane toads can live up to 16 years and produce up to 35,000 eggs. If any resident or visitor suspects that they have found a cane toad, they are asked to capture the animal alive, take photos and contact MidCoast Council, the

STATE PARLIAMENT EXCURSION: Tea Gardens students visit Port Stephens MP Kate Washington.
FREE FAMILY SHOW!
By Margie TIERNEY AUSTRALIAN history mixed in with New South Wales politics and lots of fun were on the agenda when students from Tea Gardens Public School went on a recent overnight excursion to Sydney. First stop for the children from Years 3 and 4 was Circular Quay
and a ferry ride to Fort Denison. The former military installation once came under attack from US friendly fire during World War II. Then it was off to see politics in action at Parliament House. Principal Mark Clemson said, “Not only did they get to visit our State Parliament’s
Legislative Assembly but they were welcomed into the chamber by the Deputy Speaker who noted ‘I welcome to the gallery this afternoon students all the way from Tea Gardens Public School.’” The students also got the opportunity to do a meet and greet and photo op with our Local Member for Parliament, Kate
Washington. “I know that our students appreciated this opportunity and also listening to Ms Washington address parliament,” Mark said. “Our students and staff were appreciative of the fact that they felt valued and special during their parliamentary experience because of the acknowledgment and

The ARLC Commission has launched its report into Elder Abuse and its key recommendations can be found at http://www.alrc. gov.au/news-media/elder-abusenational-legal-responses. Some really sensible suggestions have emerged from the report which are worthy of implementation. For example, the idea of a national register for enduring powers of attorney. In our experience it is not unknown for different members of a family to take their elderly relative “lawyer shopping” resulting in multiple documents which conflict with each other. The “frontline” for the use of powers of attorney is often a financial institution. Ensuring staff at Banks receive training in the legal process
for accepting a power of attorney is welcome. As a population, we are much more mobile than before. The current regime of different legal documentation in use in each State/Territory is impractical and costly. We recently saw clients move from New South Wales to South Australia which required them to execute new powers of attorney. Superannuation plays an important role in estate planning and recommendations aimed at streamlining the nomination process for death benefits is also welcome. Felicity Wardhaugh and Lana Black, along with Robert Lindsay are lawyers at Mullane & Lindsay, and practise in estate planning.

River Clean-Up Postponed By Margie TIERNEY
THE recent heavy rains have forced the postponement of this week’s river clean up in Tea Gardens. A team of divers was scheduled to go below the surface of the Myall River between the Singing Bridge and the Ogden Street Ramp on Wednesday 21 June. Clean-up Organiser Gordon Grainger told News Of The Area, “The events of the last week have resulted in a large volume of water coming from the catchment area causing increased turbidity.” “I sought advice from Dr Peter Scanes, the team Leader for Estuaries with the Office of Environment and Heritage,
who has technical equipment based in the river measuring salinity levels and turbidity.” “His advice is that any diver would have visibility problems, even should the rain cease and suggested we defer the clean-up for another week.” Dr Scanes explained, “At the moment, the tides are unequal (one high is much bigger than the other each day), meaning that the high turbidity is hanging around for even longer in each 24 hours.” “It would be better to postpone the diving to coincide with one of the bigger high tides.” The morning of Wednesday 28 June has
now been scheduled for the cleanup. The Community project was sparked by a MidCoast Council survey of the sea bed earlier this year which discovered things that had no business being in the river from bicycles to shopping trolleys. MidCoast Council, the Lions Club and the CTC have funded the project. A number of local boat owners have also offered their services for free along with the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Club. A thank you barbecue will be held on the Marine Drive Foreshore after the clean-up.

without the assistance of The Tea Gardens Country Club, Bowling Club, Golf Club and their members in their willingness to help raise the funds.” The Dunedoo CWA would also like thank the businesses for their donations for prizes for the raffles. A French Twist for Clubhouse YOUR local bridge club is spearheading the construction of its own club house; a club house which, when completed, it hopes to share with like-minded groups. Thanks to a lot of hard work over many years allied to successful applications for grants and the almost unbelievable generosity of members, construction should start this month.
q
There is still a long, long way to go before the club will be debt free so fund raising continues apace. So it was, that bridge playing Margaret Rowden conceived the idea of a musical evening with a French theme. Successfully overcoming various setbacks Margaret and her troupe were finally able put on the show, courtesy of The Grange auditorium, on
Saturday 3 June. And what a fabulous evening it was for the lucky 92 who were fortunate enough to attend the performance. Concert pianist and composer Michael Harvey had the audience spellbound with his formidable talent. Margaret, our own beautifully bespangled Musical Director/Producer and her artistes Diane Williams, Florence Beatty,
Cathie Henry, Jill Davies, Neil Kibble, Roger Chivers, Neil Clifton and John Beatty, entertained with songs, skits and a Can Can! Such wonderful talent coming together in our little village. Roger Chivers’ rendition of “Bring him home” from Les Miserables produced tears in the eyes of the audience yet was only one of many highlights.
The musical’s cast.

There was also a ton of talent hidden in the kitchen for what emerged was tasty, flavoursome and delicious. Chefs Bea Treharne and Helen Blackbourn, ably assisted by their husbands and visiting helpers/friends – produced a fine Frenchthemed three-course meal. The tables and the décor were all beautifully set up and complemented the evening’s theme. So many thanks to Jean and Adrian Ryan, Susan Helsen, Neryl Grehan, Sylvia Schmeding, Gordon Morrison and the Committee all of whom contributed to the evening’s success. BACK in February, MidCoast Council did its numbers and announced that it didn’t need a rate rise – its finances were in good shape. Thanks to good management, ratepayers could breathe a sigh of relief. Back in February the legislation was in place to STOP merged councils from any rate rise for four years, part of the LNP Government’s commitment to the ratepayers of NSW affected by this merger plan. Now, suddenly, they have found a $160 million hole in the funding. How can this be, is the management so incompetent that they simply

Somehow, probably by creative statistical analysis, Mr Turner has spun this to mean 80% of ratepayers approve of the rate rise. Another ex-pollie who has no idea what the people want! Here we have a scenario fit for a book of fiction, greedy public servants, a council massively top heavy, incompetent management, a power hungry bureaucrat and an “accommodating” politician who has no interest in the area. Maybe it isn’t IPART who should review this rate rise application. Maybe it should be referred to ICAC instead? Greg Mutton, Bundabah
very disappointing that the service is now so unreliable as to be almost useless. I know I’m not alone in my frustration and I hope something will be done about this.
Rate Rise Affects Many Dear News Of The Area,
IT is not just self-funded retirees and pensioners who will suffer from a rate rise from Council. Young families struggling with groceries and meat, shoes and clothes for children and dentist bills, to name a few things. Councillors get about $13,000 per year to sit and
make decisions about our money and at present there is no real indication as to what the money is for. Surely not more sand for Winda Woppa, when rocks should have been put there years ago, like Port Macquarie. Because we pay rates anyway, it is like a business between council and ratepayers, therefore it is a type of purchase. As the proposed rate rise is a purchase by ratepayers, we require a detailed

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from our three News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. Send your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,
I have been in a wonderful relationship with a man for five years, but now his 20-year-old son wants to move back home because he is training to be a psychologist and can’t afford to rent and study. He has quit his parttime job. I’ve never wanted children and part of the attraction of this man was his childless state. What should I do? Ms PK, Bulahdelah Dear Ms PK,
THE teen and early post-teen years are such a joy. There are cotton-buds, clogged up with goodnessknows-what body fluid, to remove from the sink. There are discarded wet towels that seep into the shag pile carpet giving it that lovely tropical dengue fever potential. There’s the intriguing dinner-table conversation that centres around your own mid-life crisis and their total inability to empathise because they are too busy changing their image into a vampire on Snapchat and saying things like “whatevs” or “lit” or “soz” or “savage”. And then there’s that mad rush from the table as soon as the meal is over so you are left with a pile of dirty dishes and a migraine from trying to keep up with the millennial lingo. What’s not to like? Having kids is a rite of passage and even if you are unable or unwilling to have your own, there’s always a solution so you are able to reach the final stage of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Some call it self-actualisation. I prefer to call it self-flagellation. Give it a whirl, Ms PK. You may find this young man fulfils a need you never knew you had. If not, his psychology training should be able to assist you to work through your deep-seated aversion to all kids great and small. You can trade washing his clothes for psychoanalysis. Brekkie With Bromhead By Daniel SAHYOUN
MEMBER for Myall Lakes, Stephen Bromhead, hosted a breakfast for student leaders from secondary schools across the region last week. Meeting in Taree, the young leaders networked, discussed issues and shared their future plans. Bulahdelah Central School (BCS) Vice-Captain, Tom Locke, said Mr Bromhead also spoke about his own background in leadership, from a life in politics to running a business. “He talked about the many career opportunities he has had, from starting out as a nurse, then moving into the police force and then into law and politics,” Tom said. “He has had a very full career and showed that sometimes you need to persevere until you find your
place.” Mr Bromhead said the breakfast provided a great opportunity for the leaders to meet with their peers, and to be reminded of the importance of their roles within their schools and the wider community. “It’s great to see all these students put their hand up and take on important roles within their schools, but it’s important that they continue that past their schooling years,” Mr Bromhead said. “Community organisations such as Lions, Rotary, Toastmasters and so on, provide further opportunities for students to hone their leadership skills.” BCS Captain, Kaitlyn Gregory, said the State Budget, Gonski Funding and leadership were some of the topics raised by the students.

REUNION DINNER: Back to Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest weekend.
By Margie TIERNEY DISMAL weather couldn’t put a dampener on the recent ‘Back to Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest Reunion’. Organiser Anne-Marie Barry told News Of The Area, “People travelled from Tasmania, Victoria, ACT, Queensland and all corners of NSW for the weekend trip

Community Hall. “Old pictures and memorabilia were on display,” Anne-Marie Barry said. Local historians and authors Ian Dunlop, Jan Winn and Carolyn Burrows were also on hand and the Tea Gardens Lions Club provided a barbecue lunch. Saturday night and 100 revellers sat down to a

Artistic Skills On Show By Daniel SAHYOUN
SEASCAPES and silhouettes captured in paint and crayon, were amongst the 35 impressive artworks on display at St Joseph’s Primary School’s Art and Cultural Evening held in Bulahdelah last week. The masterpieces were created by the students, who were guided through the creative process by Learning Support Officer, Maria Stubbs. The young artists experimented with techniques involving design, colour, volume and depth, and were extremely proud as their ideas came to life on the canvas. “My painting is about the underwater, with many sea creatures and seaweed,” student Akshay Sivaprasad

told News Of The Area. “I like drawing and painting, it was fun to make and worth the effort.” Parents and community members gathered to admire each of the masterpieces and were impressed with the artistic flair shown by the budding Renoirs and Van Goghs. Community member, Maureen Matheson, said the evening was a showcase of young, local talent. “It was great to view the work done by the students and see all their efforts and hard work pay off,” she said. At the end of the evening, parents were able to purchase the artworks which will now take pride and place in their homes for many years to come. Talents in the performing
arts were also on show, with the students presenting a concert full of music and dance to the delight of the audience. Principal, Mrs Joanne Trotter, said the Cultural Evening is held every two years. “The event is always very popular, we get great support from the school community,” she said. “The school is always proud to be part of the community, and we are always proud for students to showcase their work and express themselves through art.” Mrs Trotter said the funds raised during the evening will go towards purchasing technology resources for the school.

Jack and Thora’s first date to the Bulahdelah Show, where they “just walked around together”, was the start of a long and happy partnership. Jack said when he proposed, he was delighted that Thora “said yes straightaway”. “At the time, I was earning eight shillings a day, I don’t know how I saved for the ring, but I did,” Jack told News Of The Area. FORMER deputy mayor and councillor with Great Lakes Council, Len Roberts, recently addressed a meeting of the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association. Mr Roberts, now an advisor to the administrator of MidCoast Council spoke about the upcoming council elections in September and the new voting system. The new MidCoast Council will have potentially 65,000 to 70,000 voters. Eleven councillors are required which means each councillor will require about 6,000 votes. The major centres of Taree (22,000 voters) and Forster/ Tuncurry/Pacific Palms (20,000 voters) will therefore command the majority of councillors. Mr Roberts believes that there
is likely to be ten councillors elected from those major areas, which means that only one councillor will represent the whole of the remaining MidCoast Council area. It will be virtually impossible for a candidate from the southern area, as in Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest, to be elected on a stand-alone basis. Mr Roberts believes preferential voting will be essential to getting a local representative. He said he’s still undecided whether he will stand citing his other commitments which include his role as CEO with the Karuah Aboriginal Land Council, family issues, his pastor duties and his wife’s desire for him to retire. The Karuah Aboriginal Land Council was in a very poor financial situation when Mr Roberts took over. He involved ‘NovaSkill’ to provide
training and nine aboriginal trainees have gone on to receive horticultural qualifications. This has led to more employment and Mr Roberts says he’s observed a major change in work ethic. The Bulahdelah group is currently undertaking tree carving on the nearby mountain and Mr Roberts is hopeful the area will be opened up for general visitation and tourism. Aboriginal land holdings around Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest include the land from Sanderling Ave to the National Park between the golf course, privately owned land and the beach dunes. He expects the group will upgrade the Michael Rowe walk and encourage its use by the community.
$500,000 upgrade for Karuah Sports Field By Margie TIERNEY KARUAH is set to receive a much needed $500,000 upgrade to its sporting facilities at Lionel Morten Oval. The half million dollars will be spent replacing and upgrading current club room amenities at the home of the Karuah Roos Rugby League Club. Deputy Mayor of Port Stephens Council Chris
Doohan told News Of The Area he was more than happy to support Councillors Ken Jordan and Paul Le Mottee in their efforts to improve the sporting ground for the residents and visitors to Karuah. Mr Doohan, an ex-footy player, describes himself as a league tragic. “I’ve heard so many great things about the Karuah Roos of over the years, and I remember playing against
them as a young fella.” “I remember, we were horrifically beaten by a formidable side, who were clearly backed by a town of supporters who fiercely loved their club,” Mr Doohan said. “When it was put to us to give money towards the new club facilities, it was a nobrainer when we saw what the club has been using as their club room and facilities for so long,” he said.
In the last few momentous days the contract for the clubhouse has been signed; the initial payment made; the approved construction certificate received from Council and some of the onsite process started. Currently our indebtedness is over
$70,000 so contributions continue to be keenly sought. GNOTs and Club TEAM shield 23 & 30 June. R1 players are asked to be seated at 11.45AM. Play will commence at 12 midday. Results Friday 9 June. N/S 1 Chez Rands & Leslie Falla,

Real Fast Food On Hold By John SAHYOUN
OLIVER’S Real Food will open its new store in Bulahdelah soon, but not as soon as they had hoped. While converting the old Café into the new Oliver’s store, the construction crew discovered considerable structural damage to the building. As a result, work has been halted at the site and a Development Application and Statement of Environmental Effects now need to be considered by MidCoast Council before a Construction Certificate can be issued. Oliver’s Project Manager Ben Wotton, said as the Stroud Street location is a Heritage Zone, and the whole area is part of a Marine Reserve, strict approvals are required before renovation work can be undertaken.
“We are working closely with Bruce Moore, MidCoast Council’s Manager of Development Assessment Planning, to get the matter resolved as soon as possible. Bruce has been very helpful,” Ben said. Oliver’s have appointed Town Planning Consultant Bob Lander of Tattersall Lander Pty Ltd to shepherd the applications through Council and get the project back on track as soon as possible. News Of The Area contacted MidCoast Council for comment, and are awaiting their response. Ben said while working through the approval process, which could take up to three months, Oliver’s will bring forward one of their many other projects to replace Bulahdelah in their building schedule.
Congrats to Club Champ FROM Page 16 In the other match, Steve Jones put on a very creditable showing against Sean who eventually prevailed, winning 31-26.
The Final was delayed, due to the holiday weekend, and was completed on Saturday 17 June. The premier event on the bowling Calendar is always the Club Major Singles

“We are proud of what we have achieved in assuring the structural integrity of the building and we hope to be able to bring Bulahdelah back into the building schedule soon,” Ben said. Oliver’s are investing a significant amount of additional capital for the repairs. “This will ensure the iconic building will long continue to greet travellers as they cross the bridge into the township of Bulahdelah,” Ben said. The unexpected holdup will also delay the employment of up to a dozen locals, and a new attraction to draw more people into the bypassed township. Oliver’s expect the new Bulahdelah store will now open mid-October.
