Grange Donates to Meals On Wheels By Margie TIERNEY MEMBERS of the Grange Craft group in Tea Gardens have spent a busy year fundraising, the benefits of their generous efforts most welcome by our local Meals On Wheels community organisation. Margaret Marlow, Linda Curran and Mary Cooper recently handed over a much needed
cheque to Meals on Wheels Kitchen Supervisor, Emilie Tseronis, and MOW President Dan Holmes. “This money will go towards buying new equipment and updating existing facilities,” Dan Holmes said. “We’re extremely grateful for the all the donations we receive
from community organisations.” The Grange Craft group has also supplied scarves, beanies and knitted blankets to the Nova Women’s Shelters in Newcastle. From their kitchen in Hawks Nest, Meals on Wheels volunteers cook and deliver around 1,200 meals every month to clients in an

Will a Court enforce provisions of a lease against a party in respect of a period of time prior to the commencement date of the lease? This was one of the questions raised in Bonafair Holdings Pty Ltd v Hungry Jacks Pty Ltd. His Honour, Sackville AJA, concluded that the language used by the parties in the relevant clauses will be determinative on the issue. “It is of course possible for a lease to contain provisions attaching consequences to events or conduct predating commencement of the lease… However, in the absence of any language evincing a contrary
intention, provisions in a lease for a term of years ordinarily create rights and obligations between the lessor and the lessee as and from the date the term of the lease commences “. Therefore, unless there is a clear intention reflected in the language of the clauses, the starting position will always be that the obligations start from the commencement date of the lease and will not operate retrospectively against the parties. However, it is possible to draft clauses to operate prior to the commencement date, such as the date of the tenant taking possession.

Helipad Revamp By Margie TIERNEY
COMMUNITY groups and local business have joined forces to ensure the Tea Gardens Emergency Helicopter pad is up to scratch. A group of enthusiastic volunteers from Rotary got together last week to give the helipad on Spinifex Avenue a spruce up. “The grass had been encroaching on the concrete apron and the paint was peeling, so we busied ourselves with a line trimmer and a leaf blower,” Roger Digby said. “Then out came the paint which had been donated by Home Timber and Hardware.” “Two coats later and the helipad was shining brightly again,” Roger said. “So with the overhanging trees having been cleared by the landowner, our cleaning and painting efforts, the donated paint and a new wind sock put up by the

Lions, this Helipad has been a great project of which Rotary and the local community can be proud.” Roger added, “Let’s hope we don’t have to use it anytime soon.” Rotary is also busy getting ready for it’s annual big book sale, to be held in the Hawks Nest Community Hall on the weekend of Friday, Saturday and Sunday 4, 5 and 6 January. Anyone wishing to donate books can drop them off at Pelican Pest on Myall Street in Tea Gardens from now until a few days before Christmas.

Jan Webb said, “Playing left wing and left back position, Samuel represented the Newcastle All Stars men’s team where they reached the Grand Final against the Brisbane Warrigals, the game was 1-1 at full time and then progressed to penalty shootout, where they lost, but it was a great match.” Next year, will see Samuel play First Grade for the NPL team Lake Macquarie City Football club, the Roosters, and he’s already in training. “I’m really excited about the next 12 months,” Samuel said. “I really want to keep improving my game and hopefully go onwards and upwards.” Samuel along with two of his Newcastle teammates who were also picked for the Australian Indigenous Football Squad will compete at the Arafura Games in Darwin in April next year.

Passion for Stargazing By Margie TIERNEY
STARGAZING is alive and well in Tea Gardens, thanks to relative newcomer to the area, Stephen MacMahon. For Stephen, Astronomy has been a lifelong passion and one he’s only too happy to share. “My passion for Astronomy began while I was at boarding school at St Ignatius College in Sydney, which boasted its own observatory,” Stephen said. “During the 1970’s and 80’s I had my own observatory on my property at Grafton in northern New South Wales and witnessed
many astronomical events including Halley’s Comet and the Supernova 1987A. Living in Sydney for more than a decade put his passion on hold due to the light pollution and limited opportunities for good viewing, but his recent move to the Palm Lake Resort in Tea Gardens has re-ignited his hobby and led to others enjoying the night skies. “I posted a number of photographs on the Community Facebook Page and asked if anyone was interested in forming a group and amazingly 25 people turned up to our first meeting,” Stephen said.
The group has now grown to 62 members in just two months. Stephen said, “The aim of the Group is to have regular public viewing at our present site on Viney Creek Road.” “There is no charge to attend public viewing nights, where at least 3 members provide telescopes for people to view the cosmos.” “For those wishing to attend, a demonstration of constellations present in the skies will be given with a laser pointer followed by viewing of planets visible, star clusters, nebulae and deep sky galaxies with a
large telescope.” Stephen also has three of his older scopes available for rent for any group member that may be interested in astronomy but wishes to try before buying one. The next dark sky

Plough Inn hosts McCredie By Rachael VAUGHAN
THIS weekend, do yourself a favour and make a trip up the Pacific Highway to picturesque Bulahdelah, situated by the tranquil Myall River, only 40 minutes north of Raymond Terrace. Finish work for the week, head up the highway and spend a few hours enjoying this beautiful spring weather by exploring the riverfront, shops and historical landmarks, then
finish with dinner and fantastic live music at The Plough Inn. This Friday night, 23 November, David McCredie takes the stage from 8pm. David is a gifted local acoustic artist and recently appeared on the Voice 2018 Australia. He is able to play sweet tunes to suit a relaxed atmosphere, and he can easily change his tone to suit a party style. His vibe and sound has
been shaped by artists such as Ed Sheeran, George Ezra and Dean Lewis. David has always had a passion for singing and playing guitar from an early age, and for the last four years, he has been playing privately and corporately. He has also been involved with the Hunter Youth Alive band for events such as Groundswell and other major events. David enjoys writing his own songs, drawing from

complex life experiences that hit hard, like love, family, home, and heaven. Phrases turn, emotions connect, melodies soar and the audience connects and sings along even though they may have never heard the tune before. When David writes his own music, he turns something simple into something glorious, and something that is easy to listen to. Go along and listen for
yourself this Friday night, and try somewhere new

My wife has no idea how to use roundabouts. She stops at them when there is nothing on the roundabout and when she goes through one with two lanes, she doesn’t even stay in the lane she started in. She’s an accident waiting to happen. Concerned Mr GF, Anna Bay Dear Mr GF, I’VE given this one some thought and I think the only way to sort it out is to think of drivers on the road as different dog breeds. Now some drivers are like the Collie or the German Shepherd. They are intelligent, have great levels of concentration, keep their eye on the task at hand, and progress in a thoughtful manner. Other drivers, and I am going to put your wife in this category, are more like the two-year-old Labrador or Boxer. They race around like lunatics, unable to stay on task, and they veer all over the place as though their mind is constantly wandering to the same beat as their wavering sense of direction. Still, they mean no real harm, though they are an accident waiting to happen. There’s a third category of driver that I would put in the angry, hovering-too-closeto-your-arse box. Think of the Doberman, perhaps the misunderstood Pit Bull, or even the Rottweiler. Now I know I’m generalising here. There are some lovely dogs in all these categories, but there are also ones that would be pretty happy to chew your arm off or tailgate you down a dark alley. Now you, Mr GF, you have to be a Kelpie in this situation. You need to herd your wife back in the right direction. If she starts veering off course, just set her on the straight and narrow again. When she pulls up at the roundabout, like a dog pulling up at a tree, or a urine-stained patch of grass, or the back end of another dog, you need to nip her heels, metaphorically speaking, and guide her, gently yet firmly. Be the Kelpie, Mr GF, and all will be right with the world again. Carpe diem. Jasminda.

Mobbsie’s Memorial Swim By Margie TIERNEY JIMMY’S BEACH was picture perfect for this year’s second Open Day Swim, run by the Myall Masters. There were two events, a 600 metre swim and a 1.5 kilometre event named the ‘Mobbsie Memorial’ in honour of the late Chris Mobbs. “It was a blockbuster,” Chris Lock told News Of The Area. “We were expecting around 50 swimmers but we doubled that,” Chris said. In all 105 swimmers took to the water, 49 contesting the 600 metre, 56 going the long haul. “Andrew Leese from Keinbah was the winner of the 600m in a time of 8 mins.54 with Michael Fox from Duckenfield following very closely with a time of
8.55,” Valerie Mobbs said. “Both of these men also contested the 1.5 with Michael Fox the winner in 22.45. “The starting age for masters swimming is 18 years however Emily Klocker, a junior member of Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club, was issued a special invitation to enter the event,” Valerie said. “Emily is aged 14 and she finished the 1.5k swim in a time of 22.44, less than 1 second behind the winner which was an excellent result.” “We also observed a minute silence at 11 am to mark Remembrance Day which was very beautiful on the sands of the bay,” Valerie said. Everyone who entered headed back to the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club for some well earned lunch. Chris Lock is confident that the Open Swim will be back again next year. o Phot ery Gall line On
