POLICE and Community have come together for a celebration of local generosity. The occasion was the distribution of funds raised from the annual Hawks Nest Police Charity Golf Day. “It’s Community and Policing at its best, it doesn’t get much better than this,” Port Stephens Superintendent Chris Craner said. $6,500 was raised from last year’s event at the Hawks Nest Golf Club. Tea Gardens Senior Constable Dave Coyle paid tribute to the organisers, and officers, current and former, who helped stage the event and recruit the sponsors. “We go to all the businesses, they see us coming, and they say it can’t be that time again,” Constable

It’s that struggle which led to a donation being made to the Mark Hughes Foundation for research into brain cancer. “I’m very honoured that our Foundation has been chosen,” Mark Hughes told the gathering.
Newcastle Knights player also spoke of his own battle with cancer. ‘’At 36 year of age I had a few headaches and before I knew it, I was in John Hunter Hospital, having a tumour removed and undergoing chemotherapy and radiation.’’ “Life can change like that.” Brain cancer is one of the biggest childhood killers in youngsters under 10 and adults 40

Rain Delays Roadworks DUE to recent heavy rainfalls, roadworks which were due to commence in Bulahdelah last week, have been delayed. Contractors, St Hilliers, who are completing the work on behalf of MidCoast Council, have advised they now expect to start on Monday 3 April. There should be no impact upon local traffic during the first week in April, as the work will mainly involve preparations. However, Lee Street near the Stroud Street intersection, will be closed from 10 April and detours will be in place from this time. The program involves

Donations were also made to the new boxing gym for youngsters run by Senior Constable Rob Wylie and the Free Clinic Bus. “I’ve lived in many towns around New South Wales and overseas and I have never lived in a place where people are so giving of their time and/ or money to support things that are local,” Clinic Bus Co-Ordinator Anne-Marie Fowler told News Of The Area.

The Full Bench of the Fair Work Commission has recently conducted a review of modern awards to determine whether they are achieving their objectives. As part of the review, various employer bodies in the hospitality and retail sectors made applications to vary penalty rate provisions. The Full Bench decided that Sunday penalty rates in the Hospitality, Fast Food, Retail and Pharmacy Awards do not achieve the objectives of modern awards, as they do not provide a “fair and relevant minimum safety net”. Consequently, the following changes to Sunday penalty rates will take effect on 1 July 2017:
Sunday penalty rates (%) Full-time and part-time Hospitality Award 175 150 Retail Award 200 150 Fast Food Award (level 1 employees only) 150 125 Pharmacy Award (7.00am-9.00pm only) 200 150 Award
The Full Bench also decided to reduce public holiday penalty rates as follows:
Casual No change 200 175 175 150 200 175

By Daniel SAHYOUN
SENIOR Constable Trevor Mcleod has been awarded the New South Wales Police Medal for 30-years of diligent and ethical service to the force. The Bulahdelah Officer began his distinguished career at Wallsend and has since served in many rural and remote locations including Pilliga, Pallamallawa, Bungendore, Tocumwal and Henty before transferring to Bulahdelah in 2014. “The best thing about being a country cop is knowing the people,” Sn Constable Mcleod said. “Because of the smalltown spirit, you get to know everyone, so it is more personal.” Throughout his 30year career, Sn Constable Mcleod’s commitment to the communities he has served has been recognised with many distinguished awards. These include the Commissioner’s Commendation for brave conduct and both a State Government and Royal Humane Society Award, also presented for bravery. In addition, Sn Constable Mcleod received a National Service Medal and the NSW

IT’S often said a week is a long time in politics and the same can be said in the world of big business. After News Of The Area reported last week, we have discovered that the iconic Tea Gardens Hotel is up for sale again. Millionaire and multi hotel owner Arthur Laundy told News Of The Area, “I’ve had an offer which I have accepted and contracts have been
prepared, but as yet they have not been exchanged.” News Of The Area heard rumours that the new possible owner may have been the Toll Group. When asked about who the prospective buyer may be, Mr Laundy said, “That’s not who I’ve been dealing with.” Arthur Laundy bought the Tea Gardens Hotel just over 12 months ago after reportedly paying $6 million dollars for the property owned by the Anderson family for 69 years. Top Turnout for Council Meet By Daniel SAHYOUN MIDCOAST Council met with residents in Bulahdelah last week as part of their series of community update sessions aimed at keeping everyone informed of progress since the merger. Speaking at the meeting, Director Steve Embry said the MidCoast organisation includes 700 staff, $3.5billion of assets and an annual running cost of $250million. The $30million roads improvement program was outlined along with Council’s assets and financial position. Mr Embry said through efficiencies as a result of the merger, Council had saved over $4.8million as at the end of last year, with further savings expected over the next 12 months. MidCoast residents will go to the polls on 9 September to elect 11 Councillors, and there will be no wards. Mr Embry said nominations for the positions will be open from 31 July through to 9 August. Fresh Hope For Library By Daniel SAHYOUN MIDCOAST Council has delayed making a decision on the future of Bulahdelah Library following a meeting between Administrator John Turner, Interim General Manager Glenn Handford and members of the Bulahdelah Chamber of Commerce. Director of Community Spaces and Services Paul De Szell, said a different course of action was now being considered. “Council will now work with the Bulahdelah Rural Transaction Centre to review options to maintain a library service in Bulahdelah,” Mr De Szell said. As part of the review, Library Services Manager Chris Jones and Librarian
Loraine Farrell meet in Bulahdelah last week to view the proposed space at the centre. Mr Jones will now prepare a report for consideration at a future Council meeting. Chamber President John Sahyoun said he felt the discussions with Council have been positive. “We are pleased that Council is now considering maintaining this service for the community,” he said. “We are expecting that a decision will made within the next few weeks.” The review of the library service coincides with the upcoming retirement of Mrs Farrell who attended to the administration of the service. By Daniel SAHYOUN STUDENTS at Bulahdelah Central School were blown away by Questacon’s traveling Smart Skills workshop held at the school last week. Using several wind tunnels, the students worked through a series of handson challenges involving a process of planning, designing and refining. Smart Skills Presenter Josh Ezackial, said the workshop was all about engineering and technology. “The aim is to try and engage the kids and boost their interest in STEM, (science, technology, engineering and maths) in a hands-on way which is fun to them,” he said.
“It’s about getting them thinking creatively and thinking about problemsolving.” The challenges involved creating an object that would float in a wind tunnel, using a limited range of materials. The budding engineers experimented with principles relating to air resistance, surface area and weight distribution, which were put to the test when trialling their models. Year 8 student Annie Sullivan said it was a fun, practical way to learn about science and engineering. “I was amazed at how different objects can hold up in a wind tunnel simply by changing the surface area,” she said. “The challenges needed
a bit of creativity and showed the detail and processes involved with aerodynamics.” Josh told News Of The Area, an important part of the innovation process is learning from mistakes. “It’s definitely all about trial and error and problem solving,” he said. “A big part of it is that it is okay to make mistakes as this is how we learn.” The Wind Tunnel Challenge supported the STEM courses currently studied at the school. The Smart Skills program is run through the National Science Centre with backing from Samsung and the Ian Potter Foundation.

What A Hit
By Margie TIERNEY
WHAT began as an idea just a few months ago has turned into a reality with the opening of a Youth Boxing Gym in Hawks Nest. The driving forces behind the gym are Tea Gardens Police Senior Constable Rob Wylie and Boxing Coaches Phil Wallis and Steve Pietsch. “There have been so many supporters, the response has been overwhelming,” Rob Wylie told News Of The Area. There’s also been a remarkable response from the area’s youth, with 30
eager recruits already signed up and going to training twice a week. “We’ve got a real mix of kids from different environments,” Rob said. “It’s excellent exercise and they build up fitness.” “There’s no obligation for the kids to spar, if they just want to do training that’s ok.’’ The gym is open to boys and girls aged between 12 and 17 although exceptions can be made. ‘’We’ve had a few kids that have come in under 12 and we assess them individually to see if they’re up to it.” Like all projects attached to the Police Youth
q NEW BOXING GYM: Young boxers in the swing at Hawks Nest. Community Program, it’s not all about the sport. ‘’We’re very strict about discipline.’’ ‘’When they’re outside in the community we expect them to behave in a way that doesn’t bring disrepute to the organisation.” “If you muck up outside or you are caught bullying then you’re out.” The Boxing Gym is set up in temporary digs in Booner Street, Hawks Nest, the premises kindly donated by Century 21 in Tea Gardens. But Constable Rob Wylie says what they really need is a permanent home for the gym with preferably enough room to spar. ‘’We’re looking to the future, it might not happen this year or next but we’re

Op Shop Reno THE Karuah Op Shop is just one activity presently conducted inside the St Columba’s Anglican Church hall which was built by the Karuah community and Anglican Church members in the early 1960s. The hall was built by
volunteers using purchased and donated materials in a style to match the church and the buildings then within the township. Cliff Johnson, a congregation leader in the church, said, “The time has come to repair and renovate
looking to the future.” Both Rob Wylie and Phil Wallis freely admit they could do with some help when it comes to grant writing and fundraising. Rob and the coaches, who all donate their time, are passionate about the sport and very thankful for the amazing financial and community support they’ve already received. “Boxing got me through my teenage years and kept me out of trouble,” Constable Wylie said. Top Gong for Crazy Dave
News Of The Area
By Daniel SAHYOUN
LOCAL broadcaster Crazy Dave Saul, has taken out the top gong for ‘Best Interview’ in the Southern Community Media X Awards. The awards ceremony, recently held in Wagga Wagga, honoured the nation’s best in community radio broadcasting. “I am in shock, I honestly never expected that I would win,” Crazy Dave said. “It’s a huge honour, not only for myself, but also for the radio station as a whole.” Crazy Dave’s interview with Bandintexas on Great Lakes FM, outshone finalists from Victoria’s Plenty Valley and ORK FM for the top honour. Great Lakes FM also claimed the top prize for ‘Best Outside Broadcast’ for their live coverage of the 2016 Bulahdelah Show. “This year, Great Lakes FM was nominated for four awards, and they brought home two,” Crazy Dave said. “It is a very good quality station and very well-run.”
Op Shop Reno FROM Page 8 been offering Karuah locals and visitors a great range of donated second hand and new clothes, shoes, toys and books for many years. The Op Shop allows the redistribution of goods, while providing a valuable service and shopping opportunity to the town. The amateur broadcaster, who has been presenting ‘The ROCK shed with crazy dave’ for just over 12-months, said he would have to wait and see if the big win would open any doors. “I’m definitely not expecting to be rich and famous,” Crazy Dave said. “At this point, I’m more than happy to continue doing the ROCK shed, continue promoting Aussie rock bands and broadcasting to the local community and to the world via the internet.” With a national award now under his belt, Crazy Dave told News Of The Area he has many more top quality interviews planned. “I have a few interviews lined up, but they’re all secret, you’ll have to wait and see what they are,” he said. The ‘ROCK shed with crazy dave’ is broadcast every Friday night on Great Lakes FM.

The refurbishment of the shop and hall is planned to start in April this year, with a completion and grand reopening planned for mid year. It’s planned by the church to keep the Op Shop open during the refurbishment and trading from the “Old Antiques Shop” at 412 Tarean
Road while construction of the new hall is in progress. Cliff has promised to keep Karuah and District residents informed on the progress of the refurbishment. He has invited them to visit the Op Shop on Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings at its old location before the reconstruction starts or at the temporary location during construction, or even the church on Sunday mornings, to observe and be reassured on the progress of the refurbishment and the project as a whole.

Marathon Effort for Melanoma Walker
By Margie TIERNEY LOCAL businesses have dug deep once again to donate prizes for a raffle to raise funds for Jay Allen’s marathon walk for melanoma. When Kaye Simpson from First National in Hawks Nest tasked herself with the job of prize gatherer, she thought she’d manage a basket of goodies. “I have had an amazing response from local businesses and residents so we will have eight draws at Jay’s fundraiser on Thursday night,” Kaye told News Of The Area. When 40-year-old Jay arrives in Hawks Nest later this week, he will have walked nearly a thousand kilometres of his marathon trek from Brisbane to Sydney.
“He’s got a few blisters, but going strong,” Crew Member Haley Van Elst said. Of course Jay’s life changing journey really began nine years ago when he was diagnosed with Melanoma then survived to tell the story. If you would like to meet Jay, Mumm’s Restaurant on Marine Drive in Tea Gardens is holding a fundraising dinner on Thursday March 23 from 6pm. Tickets for the raffle are $2 each or three for $5 dollars and can be bought ahead of the dinner at First National Real Estate in Hawks Nest or Mumm’s. To follow Jay’s marathon or donate to the Melanoma Institute simply go to his website https:// thelongestmelanomamarch. gofundraise.com.au/.

By Margie TIERNEY NIMBLE fingers and tiny stitches have paid dividends for the members of the Myall Community Art and Craft Centre. The ladies of the sewing and quilting group have raffled off one of their beautiful creations and raised $1,200 in the process. It took many months and many hands to stitch the quilt
before founding member Joan Wilcox drew the winning raffle ticket. Tristan Hughes, the grandson of another member, Jenny Hughes, was the lucky winner. The ladies of the Myall Community Art and Craft Centre, Quilting and Sewing group would like to thank all those who bought a ticket. The funds will now go towards a new quilting
machine for the sewing room. The Sewing and Quilting group meets every Wednesday and Thursday at the Craft centre. Up to 30 people go along each week to enjoy the friendship, learning and creativity the centre has on offer. New members are always welcome. There are also mosaic groups as well as art, knitting
and woodwork classes or you can spin and weave, try lead lighting or sculpture. For more information on groups and class times head to their website: myallartandcraft.com.au or phone 49970270. The Myall Art and Craft Centre is holding its General Meeting at 245 Myall Street, Tea Gardens (behind the Visitors Information Centre) on Saturday 8 April at 2pm

Tender for Cup Tour
THE Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour will this year celebrate a 15-year milestone, with the Melbourne Cup trophy set to visit more than 30 destinations in its annual trek across Australia and New Zealand. To ensure the Port Stephens community has an opportunity to secure a visit from the 18-carat gold Cup in this milestone year, the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) will open the tender process early for the 2017 Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour with submissions now being accepted. Since 2003, the Melbourne Cup has
travelled more than 456,000 kilometers to rural, regional and metropolitan communities across Australia and New Zealand. “The VRC created the concept of the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour with the aim to provide communities without easy geographical access to the Melbourne Cup, an opportunity to experience the magic of the trophy firsthand,” VRC Chief Executive Simon Love said. “We never dreamed that the Tour would evolve into such a significant community event, which 15 years later, continues to grow in popularity.
MYALL COAST
“We are humbled by the pleasure the Cup provides to people of all ages, and want to ensure that as many communities as possible share the same unique opportunity again this year,” Mr Love said. In 2016, the $175,000 gold trophy toured 34 destinations, providing schools, councils, hospitals, aged-care facilities and racing clubs with a unique opportunity to host a day of community events and raise valuable funds for local causes. Past racing legends also accompany the Cup each year on its epic journey to recount some
of the remarkable stories intrinsically linked to the ‘race that stops a nation’. The 2017 Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour welcomes submissions from community groups, councils and racing bodies in rural and regional areas as well as capital cities, with successful destinations to be announced in June. Each host destination selected makes a commitment to provide memorable and engaging community events involving the Cup for everyone to enjoy. Local fundraising initiatives will also be supported. Tenders to be submitted at melbournecuptour. com.au by 5pm (AEST) on Monday 3 April.

But no, we are here to walk and this is what we shall do. Our introductory walk under a leaden sky with battering wind saw a full roll up to a destination called Crackneck Lookout. What could possibly go wrong? As it turns out nothing. A good time was had by all.
Day two. Who knew so much rain could fall in one night? Surely that hammering I heard early Tuesday morning was someone working on their plan with measurements that included palms and cubits. As the interpretation of those terms differed widely, let’s hope there will not be any need for serious ark building in the immediate future. walks. But when lazy creeks turn into raging torrents, even the best laid plans can go awry. Not to be undone we sought other avenues of adventure and were rewarded with a walk down to a spectacular waterfall at its magnificent best. The downside of this great day? Leeches and more leeches. Some reputed by one walker to be bigger than a snake. It would seem that nothing quite focuses the mind as much as the sight of
a leech invading your shoe through an eyelet. It can also be somewhat disconcerting to see a group of people emerging from the forest all with feet covered in bloody trails. But please spare a thought for those who encountered the leeches that leapt at them. The Coast to Lake walk on Thursday proved to be equally enjoyable with the only drama occurring when a hat was wind tossed into the water at the end of the long jetty at where else but Long Jetty. Thanks must go to our great organisers Ray and Cherry for providing us with another memorable experience.

Bowlers Control Inner Gorilla BOWLING
Karuah RSL Bowls Club By Trevor DAVIES THOSE who have read some of my previous reports would have picked by now that I am something of a people watcher. Couple that with a love of the game of Lawn Bowls and I get to watch and learn a lot about my fellow Lawn Bowlers! Interestingly enough, while the spectrum is weighted heavily to the end that has good, interesting, fair playing, fair minded folk, the full spectrum is there and all types do play Lawn Bowls. Social bowls is universally a fun pursuit where a cost of say $5.00 to play can see the winning team picking up $15 to $20 each. Bragging rights and a couple of drinks perhaps, but winning will never put a deposit on a new car.
At the other end of the competition scale is inter club pennants. While the competition is fierce, with the need to bring glory to your club, or at the very least avoid disgrace, these games too are generally played in the best of spirits with social interplay, hospitality and good company right up there with winning and losing. Things get really tense and serious, however, when in club championships start being played. These games are not played for money, or district glory, they are played for a little trophy and in some cases, your name being put up on the wall on an “Honour Board”. Now there is immortality for you! These games occasionally see normally sane and friendly club mates lose their veneer of “niceness” and morph into “ear biting Mike
Twilight Golfers
GOLF Hawks Nest Golf Club Social Club Golf By Luke BOYD AS luck would have it the weather didn’t miss a beat for the twilight golfers on Thursday 16 March. The clouds abated just long enough for the golfers to tee off and finish with the sun shining through the clouds in the distance. Then it poured again during the presentation. Great timing for the
twilight social club golfers to play their weekly nine holes of golf. Yet again another three way countback for the weekly title of twilight golf champion. The winner, Michael Genner, scored 21 wellearned points. After two wins consecutively the two weeks earlier, Pat Henry also scored 21 points to win the runner up title after a countback. The nearest to the pin was Garth Allen. Glen Burgess won the raffle for two weeks in a row. Great Golf.
Tyson clones”. Of course immortality is an interesting concept. If you were one of the 1993 mixed pairs champions, it’s great to be able to exalt in the glory of your name being up there on the wall for all to see. Naturally, if that’s not you up there, honestly, who cares. Strangely though, you still really want to win this year and get your name up there. Normal civility and friendly outer appearances get put on the shelf by some players and true aggressiveness can surface. We can all fall into this trap of inner revelation and like many others I have also stood at the edge of the abyss and peered over at its scary depths. This is where true sportsmanship and intellectual control over baser instincts get to be exercised. It’s really revealing to see just who can do this when they
really want something, and remember, it’s “immortality” we are chasing here. How well can you control your inner gorilla? The chance to experience these types of competitions and their required self control are available to all who have a crack at our great sport. Over the course of a couple of seasons, you too can get to know yourself and often your fellow players and neighbours so much better. What’s stopping you? At Karuah RSL we still bowl every Tuesday and Thursday (weather permitting), 9.30am for 10.00am in social comps. We have social Sunday bowls with beginner sessions for both adults and juniors free. Call the RSL for time confirmation. Bowls is the sport that just keeps on giving for all age groups. You just have to give it a try. See you at Karuah.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from our three News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. Send your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,
I have been dating a great girl for a few months now, things seem to be getting more serious between us as she has just introduced me to her mother. What advice do you have for me? I really like this girl, but not only is her mother as mad as a cut snake, whenever I look at this girl all I see now is what she will look like in 20 years. Mr PC Shoal Bay Dear PC, At this stage in your relationship you should be focusing on the emotional connection between you and your new love. You should be dining and skulking and swooning and seducing like Hugh Grant in every single movie he’s ever been in. This is a time of pure rapture, enchantment and puppy-dog eyes. All of us fade, men and women, from blossoming magnolias through to dried up mushrooms (you know, the ones you find up the back of the fridge after seven months). So focus on what is on the inside. As Shakespeare said, “Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, and therefore is winged Cupid painted blind” or words to that effect. He also said, “thou cream-faced loon”, but that is an unfortunate aside. I’d be more worried that, in your words, the mother is “as mad as a cut snake”. Is that a genetic trait you want to pass down to your offspring? Look out for delusions, hallucinations, signs of “sundowning” like the mad nana in The Visit. Anyway, it could be worse. Some lovely ladies end up looking like their fathers. Surely a crepey décolletage and a few chin hairs is preferable to a beer gut and a gammy leg. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

and Justine Cruise, swept by the Scuba Howell, won Gold in the Master Women’s Surfboat. “An achievement that will go down in the club’s history and another chapter for Ian Dunlop to write about,” Peter said. “The first boat crew in TGHN history to win a Gold medal at the State Championships.” “When one looks at the amount of time the club has been involved in this surf club discipline, with the resources available, they should be very proud of what has been done.” The Master Men’s crew of Andrew Stubbs, John Estons, Ian Sunner and Peter Larkin missed the final by one point following a couple of tough draws.
Back on the sand the quiet achievers were at work. Jan Logue won Silver in the 1km Beach Run, Silver in the Beach Sprint and Silver in the Beach Flags. Not to be outdone by the boat crews, Tony Logue, won Gold in the 1km Beach Run. In his first event on the sand at the State Titles, Andrew Stubbs backed up after rowing in the Masters to win Silver in the 2km Beach Run. “Everyone in the club is extremely proud of their achievements,” said Peter. “Remember they also patrol Bennetts Beach looking after the safety of locals and visitors when the flags are up.” We couldn’t be in better hands.

And the winner is Tea Gardens Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA
IT has been an amazing week in bowls for the Tea Gardens Dolphins with all Pennant Grades winning their matches at home and away. But first off, domestically, rain washed out play in the usual Wednesday Gala Day. It again washed out play in the Fabulous Friday Open Pairs and put paid to any play on Sunday morning by the Sunday Bowlers and the scheduled commencement of the Club Pairs Championship. Although our Wednesday bowlers could not play, the Mighty Dolphins Grade 4, Mid-Week Pennant side travelled down to Mayfield West, who happened to have a synthetic green above flood level, where they had a great win.
q The winners of the Corporate Day “Golden Bowl” Justine and Steve Jones, from Queen Kitchen, with Luke Gliwa. The Greg Pearson team, so far undefeated, continued on their winning way with a 27-13 victory. The Mark Hair team were also convincing with a
21-12 win. The Keith Smith team lost in a close game 16-18. The Final score Tea Gardens 64, Mayfield West 44.

TUESDAY 14 March: surprise, surprise bowls cancelled due to rain. A good number of ladies did turn up for a game of bowls, but unfortunately the heavens opened up and end of story. home games with the as yet undefeated Mighty Dolphins Grade 3 side playing Toronto Workers and the Grade 5 Dolphins engaged in a local derby against the Karuah Reds. In Grade 3, Stephen Pell’s side won by the largest margin, winning 26-11. The Sean Mearrick team were also convincing with a 22-13 victory. The Richard Lee team played with luck against them and lost 18-28. The Master Board score was Tea Gardens 66, Toronto Workers 52. Great win! The Mighty Dolphins Grade 5 side kept the winning streak going with a satisfying win over our neighbours, 76-59. All teams won their individual games with the Ron Webster side recording the highest winning margin, 31-21. The Keith Smith team
maintained the momentum, winning 24-18, whilst the Kerry O’Brien team played a nail-biter, winning by one shot on the last end. They won 21-20. Great team effort! Not to be outdone, the Mighty Dolphins Grade 6 side travelled over to Soldiers Point, who just happen to have a covered green. The Doug Naylor team had their feathers ruffled a little by Soldiers Point losing their game 18-30; however, the remaining two teams brushed away their opponents to carry the day 67-55. Leigh Hunt’s team won comfortably 25-14, (hear tell Leigh was the man of the match!), and the Max Stephens team had a resounding win 24-11. It does not get any better than four wins out of four.
winners at the end of the competition. Points will be awarded for attendance at games and for winning. Pennant season begins on the 21 March. Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club has two teams participating this year. In Grade 2 the teams are Robyn Beaumont, Vicki Rankin, Lynne Green and Kayelene Pearson. Robyn Webster, Karen Green, Dale Winter and Maynie Roberts. Grade 3 Kerry Faber, Karen McPhie, Wendy Brand and Nola Jackson. Sandra Leisemann, Sheril Johnson, Wendy Jones and Liz Kelly. Good luck ladies, bring home another flag for our flag pole. Thursday 16 March: Sadly, no social bowls yet again, due to rain. Fingers crossed play will go ahead next Tuesday.
Congratulations Francis Betar, Karen McPhie, Pam Gilchrist, Karen Green and Lynda Richards, who successfully completed the Marker, Measurer and Umpire Course ( I am not sure if I should be congratulating myself). I have to recommend this course to anyone who is seriously interested in bowling. It is good for the club to have members who are qualified in this aspect of the game. Thanks to the Women’s Bowls NSW Regional Umpire Educators Vicki Rankin and Robyn Lewis who conducted the course. Not only are these two both great bowlers but they do know every rule in the book. Hopefully next article will contain results from games played.

Fishing Friends Frenzy By John SAHYOUN FRESH off the back of the Bass Bash and Mid Coast fishing titles, local anglers recently took to the waters once again for the annual ‘Mate Against Mate’ competition.
With club pride at stake, the Blue Water Fishing Club pitted their skills against their mates from the Bulahdelah Fishing Club, with each having their eyes on the prize. Bulahdelah Fishing Club
newsofthearea.com.au
Secretary Melissa Smith said the event was just a “friendly” contest between the clubs. “We hold this competition annually in March,” she said. “There are no limitations on where you fish or what you catch, as long as you are

back for the weigh in.” Both clubs recorded decent catches, however, Bulahdelah Fishing Club proved too strong and easily cruised to victory. In the individual categories, Brett Shultz claimed the men’s title, followed closely by Tom
Fishing Club. Olivia Smith’s fine form during the competition resulted in her claiming the Junior Champion title. In the overall weight category, Brett Shultz took the top prize, narrowly pipping Blue Water Fishing Club’s Al Freihaut at the post. The friendly competition finished with lunch and a few laughs between the mates. Hoping to win back the title at next year’s event, Blue Water Fishing Club President David Schlenert issued a friendly challenge. “The club is looking forward to next year’s competition, they are hoping to unbolt the trophy and return it to its rightful place at the Golf Club,” he said. This year’s competition was hosted by the q Runner-Up: Al Freihaut with his 8.3kg catch, reeled in off Bulahdelah Fishing Broughton Island. Club.
Cricket Club Breaks Drought CRICKET
Karuah & Tea Gardens District Cricket Club By Colin McCARTHY THIS season saw the club bring home a major premiership in the Dungog District Cricket Association, with the Karuah Sharks Red defeating Gresford Gorillas to win the title after securing the minor premiership weeks before. The grand final was played at Dungog on 11 March, in good sporting spirit, bowling first the Karuah Reds held Gresford to a total of 5/152 off 35 overs. Bowling tightly, the Sharks at times let Gresford back into the contest but holding catches at vital times saw the Sharks stop the Gresford team from making more than their 152 at the close of their batting time. Bowling honours to
Darren Weatherall 2/26 and Mark Bills 1/27. The Sharks not being a noted chasing side lost an early wicket but a fine partnership of 82 between Mark Johnson 42 and Sam Larkings 39 put the Sharks in a good position. Three quick wickets through the game back to the Gresford Gorillas. Things started to spice up in the run chase, Mark Bills 44 no and Aaron Oltersdorf 22 no, then came together when the Sharks need 10 an over off the final three overs to win. On that third last over they took to the Gresford bowler for 18 runs in the over, putting the game on an even keel with two overs to play, a run a ball and well within the ability of the two Sharks batsmen. With three balls to spare Mark Bills played a cover drive over the in field to score the winning runs and a well deserved victory.
16 MYALL COAST NEWS OF THE AREA
Captain Colin McCarthy could only praise his players on fine effort on the day, “We had fifteen players to chose for the game but I could only use 12. This win was earned and deserved by all 15 who helped during the season”. Kookaburras - these young Sharks play for the fun and enjoyment, but most kids have a bit of a competitive edge. The 10 young boys and girls that make up this side showed us that during the year they got the taste of winning and they like it. With an age range of 7 to 12 years, they beat some of the more senior teams throughout the season, winning 11 of their 16 games, 9 in a row. Coached by Brent Bills, he brought the best out of the kids each week and by all reports the kids responded and gave their all each week for him. Well done coach. Under 13s - They secured the minor premiership for their grade and played very
good Northern Suburbs team from Maitland District in the knockout semi final on the 11 March at Morpeth. Going down to the Norths side was admirable for our young players and they will learn from these hard knocks that nothing short of your A grade game is required on big occasions. The Sharks batted first and could only muster up 9/78 off 22 overs. Riley Barry 15, Lachlan Groot 14 and Zac Watt 11 were the only players into double figures. The bowlers threw everything they had at Norths but dropped catches early hurt the young Sharks, with Norths passing the total in the 15th over. Bowling honours Mitchell Nott 2/3 and Ethan Pinch 1/11. Let’s hope these young boys continue on next season and improve, to perhaps go that one step further, to playing in a grand final and winning a title for
NewsOfTheArea.com.au
Evans and Grant Bidgood, with all placegetters representing the Bulahdelah Fishing Club. Winner of the women’s competition was Vanessa Shultz, with minor placings taken by Melissa Smith and Angela Bidgood, also members of Bulahdelah
the club. Well done boys be proud of your efforts during the season. Karuah White Seniors - This team were the big improvers for the club this season. They were stacked with young players, under the age of 16, with captain Jim Drinkwater instilling his experience in the team, as they showed during the season they could match it with the more senior teams in the open grade competition. They finished third in the open grade competition, before it was split into two divisions for the finals series. This was a team that were placed 6th at the Christmas break winning 6 games in a row, including beating those teams above them along the way, only to lose one game after Christmas. But finishing third was going to hurt them when wet weather plays havoc with the finals. This is exactly what happened and they were unable to play their final due to a washed out ground. Well done captain Jim and
the team, the club is full of strength for years to come because of the time and effort that people like Jim Drinkwater out into the club. On behalf of the club we would like to thank our major sponsor the Karuah & District RSL Club. Thanking Ross Parr (General Manager), President Peter Fidden and his ever obliging board of directors, for their continued support of the cricket club. Some clubs in the local area should take a leaf out of their book when it comes to obliging members and local sporting clubs that promote junior sport. Clubs need supporters and a big thank you to our scorers, Leonie Watt (Karuah Red & U/13s) and Debbie Johnson (Kookaburras) along with the parents who turn up each week getting their kids active in the game of cricket If you want to keep track of the club activities, follow us on Facebook : Karuah & Tea Gardens District Cricket Club, we will be back next year bigger and better.
