from clusters of living oysters and old shell. During early European settlement, vast quantities of natural oyster reefs were harvested in an unsustainable manner for food and as a source of lime used in construction. By the late 1800's they had all but disappeared in NSW, however wild oyster populations still exist in most bays and estuaries but at very low densities compared to the pre-European period. Research continues to demonstrate the value of oyster reefs as habitat structures for biodiversity, fish production, water filtration, shoreline protection and nitrogen fixation. Oyster reef restoration introduces sterile shellfish shells and/or rock to the estuary bottom preferably in areas with high settlement rates of wild oyster larvae. From late December 2019 until early

MIDCOAST Council says reports about the cost of trucking water to Gloucester if the town does require emergency water over the Christmas holidays are inaccurate. “Figures quoted on the cost per day to truck water to Gloucester have been greatly exaggerated,” said Council’s General Manager Adrian Panuccio.” “If a situation develops that Gloucester does require emergency provision of water by truck, then it is obviously a more expensive exercise than the usual town supply, which is dependent on river flows from the Barrington River.” Council has plans in place to bring water to Gloucester by road from the Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest aquifer. The NSW Government will subsidise the cost of transporting the water by more than 90%, with Council funding the remainder. “The Barrington River has never ceased flowing in recorded history,” said Mr Panuccio. “We’ve put arrangements in place, just in case this occurs, and there is a possibility that this summer we may need to supply Gloucester from an alternate water source.” The overriding and most important thing is for residents to reduce their water use now. “Right now, and leading into the Christmas season, we are urging all residents and visitors to the MidCoast to observe the level 4 severe restrictions in place for most of the region. Our daily water usage remains above the targets set for level 4, and we need to ensure everyone is on board with water restrictions,” Mr Panuccio said.

March 2020 DPI Fisheries will work with local contractor M+J Marine to construct two oyster reef bases in the Port Stephens estuary using more than 3,000 tonnes of rock and recycled oyster shell. All oyster shell used in the project has been collected from oyster farmers located within Port Stephens to address disease concerns. Port Stephens has naturally high levels of oyster larvae. The baby oysters called ‘spat’ will settle on a rock and colonise the new rock and shell reef bases during late summer and autumn 2020, and will begin to grow into a solid oyster reef. Construction work is being timed to coincide with the highest levels of oyster settlement in the Port.

It’s a local first Bridge Catherine Cusack for Kids to be the ParliaBy Sandra CLARK

FOR some time the Hawks Nest Bridge Club has been wondering how to introduce children to the game of Bridge. Minibridge is a simplified version of the card game especially designed in France and the Netherlands to introduce schoolchildren to playing Bridge. This game has become so popular in some countries that it is now part of the primary school curriculum. Playing card games helps children to learn about numbers, colours and sequences. According to the English Bridge Union ‘Bridge for Kids’ helps kids to develop their numeracy and reasoning skills while having fun playing a sociable, competitive and interactive game.

Because Bridge is a partnership game, children learn that they need to co-operate and share information and work as a team to achieve a winning outcome. President of the Hawks Nest Bridge Club Leslie Falla said, “We are delighted to be offering Bridge for Kids this school holidays. There is a lot of support for this innovation and many of the members have volunteered to help run these sessions.” Trish Thatcher who is running the sessions told News Of The Area, “‘If successful we would like to take this program into local schools in the future’. The free fun is on these school holidays; Tuesday or Thursday afternoon 2-4pm Hawks Nest Bridge Club, 26 Yamba Street for children aged 8-13 years. For more information contact the organiser Trish Thatcher on 4997 0782 or email pthatcher7@bigpond.com

Event sponsorship applications opening MidCoast Council’s latest round of event sponsorship applications for 2020/21 will open on 1 January 2020.

MIDCOAST Council’s latest round of event sponsorship applications for 2020/21 will open on 1 January 2020. Event organisers holding events across the MidCoast region between 1 August 2020 and 31 January 2021 are invited to submit applications for sponsorship funding of up to $10,000 from Council. Applications for sponsorship will be assessed based on the level of economic, social and cultural benefits generated through the event. Not only do local events connect the MidCoast’s vibrant communities, they help put the region on the map, attracting visitors from around the country and boosting the local economy. From art shows and music festivals, to sporting events, food, fashion and everything in between, local events are a celebration of what the MidCoast is all about and Council is committed to supporting these great events to deliver benefits to the area’s 90,000+ residents and visitors. Depending on the scale of the event, four categories of funding are offered in the sponsorship program: Community event: Up to $2,000 Medium event: $2,000 - $5,000 Large event: $5,000 - $10,000 Iconic event: $10,000+

Applications must be submitted online using the event sponsorship application form, while organisers of 'Iconic Events" should contact Council’s events team prior to submitting their application. “This is a terrific opportunity for event organisers to receive assistance in bringing their ideas and projects to life or to grow and improve existing events,” explained Robyn Brennan, MidCoast Council’s Economic Development Coordinator. “Council has a long history of supporting events across the region with 20 to 30 high quality applications for sponsorship received across each bi-annual round of sponsorship.” “We know that these events are largely run by volunteers and the benefits to the community are immeasurable so this assistance is really important for these dedicated event organisers and their teams.” All applicants are required to submit an event budget using MidCoast Council’s event budget template, available on the website. For more information and to begin your sponsorship application, head to www. midcoast.nsw.gov.au/funding. The funding round will be open from 1 January 2020 to 28 February 2020.

Women’s Auxiliary raffle By Lois McSHANE TEA GARDENS RSL Women's Auxiliary

THE winners of the recent Tea Gardens RSL Sub Branch Women’s Auxiliary raffle, drawn on Monday 9 December at the sub branch Christmas Luncheon are as follows: “Frozen II” licenced roll-on travel case: Orange ticket – D 47, Lyn 3 Christmas Baskets: Green ticket – C 20, Ray Purple ticket – F 45, Chris Black ticket – E 5, Albert Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all who supported the raffle. All proceeds will be directed to RSL Defence Care, supporting Australian veterans and their families in times of injury, illness or crisis. 2020 will see RSL NSW move forward under a new constitution that will help to

ensure strict governance and transparency, particularly with respect to financial matters. Under this new constitution the NSW Central Council of RSL Women’s Auxiliaries (formerly known as CCWA) will cease to exist, as will its district councillors. Subsequently auxiliaries will deal with their local sub branches for information and direction, rather than their district councillors or head office in Sydney. Tea Gardens RSL Sub Branch meets on the third Monday of the month at 10:00am at the Country Club meeting room. The first meeting for 2020 will be the AGM on February 17th, followed by a barbeque lunch. Meeting times for the Tea Gardens RSL Sub Branch Women’s Auxiliary sub-committee will be finalised in February. Prospective new members for both the Tea Gardens RSL Sub Branch and the Women’s Auxiliary sub-committee are always welcome to come along and view proceedings.

Security over the Holidays By Julie MCKIMM HOLIDAYS are meant to be a time for relaxing and enjoying your time away from your busy work and school life, however this can all be ruined if you don’t take measures to ensure your safety and security. NSW Police have some great tips if you are heading away these holidays to keep your home secure. Before you leave, ensure your home is securely locked, including all windows, cancel newspapers and re-direct your mail

and put pets into boarding kennels. Those who prefer to leave pets at home, have friends or family visit them often or better still, get a house sitter to mind your home, pets and mail. Always let your neighbours know your plans and whom might be calling in to check on pets or collect mail. Leaving your yard and lawn tidy ensures it looks lived in and is a deterrent to criminals. Some good tips to ensure you come back to your home as you left it.

Loose Bazooka LOOSE Bazooka is playing at Anna Bay Tavern this New Year's Eve. After exploding onto the Newcastle rock scene over ten years ago, Loose Bazooka are well known for bringing back the days of classic pub rock. Driving the rock solid rhythm section on Drums is Tim the animal, Dave (Daggy) Lewis - Bass and vocals, and on guitar and vocal Wayne (Sparky) Simpson on guitar and vocals the powerhouse Bob (Fish) Glover up front on vocals, he has style, he has class, he delivers rock as it should be! Loose Bazooka has a huge repertoire from funk and blues to rock (modern and classic). With covers of AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, The Angles, INXS, Easy Beats, Chain, T-Rex and The Doors etc. Throughout the years of playing in hundreds of venues, Loose Bazooka have built a very impressive show based on what the audience wants to hear. So that's what you will get at a Loose Bazooka show.

PHOTOGRAPHS FOR RENTALS

“Should I use a professional photographer for my rental property marketing?”

q

WHETHER your property is an owner-occupier or investment, it is a valuable commodity. The rental market has become an exceptionally competitive property market segment and just like owner-occupier properties, first impressions count. A solid advertising and marketing strategy can make the difference between renting your property within a few days, or having it languish on the market for much longer; missing out on quality tenants. Every week a property sits empty costs the landlord. Unless the landlord is also a professional photographer, DIY photography usually results in a second-rate outcome thereby reducing the property’s overall appeal. I suggest it is false economy to save on a professional photographer. Properties with great advertising attract more people, more quickly, translating to more inspections and a quicker listing. A point to remember is that professional photographs are tax deductible so why not give yourself the very best chance to secure a quality tenant in the shortest time frame. R & R Property utilises the services of a professional photographer for all our properties: owner-occupier or rental. Our clients deserve the very best, and that’s what we deliver.

Surf Club Boat Crews In the Mix Again AFTER a promising start to the competitive season at the season opener at Terrigal, Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club (TGHN SLSC) Surfboat Crews travelled to Macksville Scott’s Head for two rounds of the Streets Surf Boat Series. The competition went up a level with a combined carnival bringing clubs and crews from as North as Woolgoolga to as south as Umina and Avoca. Over 20 surf clubs competed in various divisions from Opens to Masters and U/23’s to U19’s. Four crews from TGHN, our Open Men’s and Women’s, our Hunter Branch representative U/19’s and the Masters all travelled up Friday for two days of racing. A mixed weekend for results overall. Narrowly missing the final our Open Men’s continue to have small things take the gloss off their performance. The Open

Women’s finished fourth overall and improved all weekend – especially when Susie Webb’s Mum turned up to watch – first place in the race Mum was watching. The U/19’s finished 5th in the final, maybe a few too many ends at barefoot bowls on Saturday afternoon. The TGHN Masters were probably the best performed crew on the weekend finishing 3rd overall in the final on Sunday. After 3 rounds of the Streets series, the halfway point, TGHN Women’s crew lead the series, U/19’s sit in 3rd place s do the Open Men’s and the Masters are in 4th despite not competing in the opening round. TGHN SLSC would also like to put out an enormous thanks to the firefighters in our area including our own club members giving up their time with the Rural Fire Service.
