HAVING grown up in the West Point slums in war-racked Liberia, John Duncan knows the challenges the children face when it comes to accessing a school education. Armed with fist full of funds, raised through a combination of his own savings and a donation from a friend, John headed back to his hometown during the recent holiday break to begin turning his childhood dream of building a school into a reality. The Bulahdelah Central School teacher said a good education will give children the best John Duncan believes education is the key to improving the lives of children.

options for their futures. “I grew up in the slums, but I always wanted to make a difference,” he said. “I wanted to travel overseas to acquire a decent education then go back and make a positive change and serve as a role model. I want kids to know that anything is possible once you are determined and ready to

your goals.” John said the first stage of his project involves building classrooms, an administration office and purchasing a bus to transport children to the school. “It will be the first specialist STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine) school in Africa,” he said. “Initially, it will

focus at a junior level for children in Kindergarten to Year 3, but over time I hope to extend it to Year 12.” John came to Australia in 2009 on a study scholarship from Macquarie University. After graduating, he worked in Sydney schools before moving to Bulahdelah with his wife and three young children earlier this year. “When the opportunity came up to move to this area I grabbed it,” John said.

newsofthearea.com.au “I enjoy teaching and the kids and staff here are great.” After returning from his trip next week, John said he will be focused on raising more funds to further expand his project. “Every dollar will go a long way towards providing a decent STEM education for all African children,” he said. John hopes the new school, which has been years in the planning, will be ready to open in September.

Barrington Coast? FROM Page 1 Myall Coast will still be Myall Coast,” Mr Roberts said. Here’s how the new name has come about. “Tourism Australia gave Council a grant a couple of years ago to produce a destination management plan for tourism,” Mr Roberts said. “With the merger it was extended to cover the whole area and the destination

plan is a tourism strategy endorsed by Tourism Australia.” ‘’Initially, Mid Coast, which was the preferred name, but after extensive research with tourist operators, visitors, marketing, SEO and so on, it was not a name that represented our area.” “Midcoast was seen as bland and generally suggested Port Macquarie.” As locals are well aware, the LGA is bounded by the coast to the East and the Barrington Ranges to the West.

Councillor Roberts added, “I must say when the Councillors were appraised of the name (Barrington Coast) all were aghast.” “We asked for further research and gave extra names.” “I have not yet seen the report about for next Wednesday, but a briefing last week gave logical and coherent reasons why Barrington Coast would be good and I will make up my mind on the evidence.” “The business houses and the various chambers across the Shire also

endorse the marketing strategy, agreeing we need to have a strong distinction between our areas.” “Individual towns, villages and areas will not be rebranded, nor will they suffer by the name change,” he said. “They will retain and enhance their own identity.” “If Midcoast cannot be used what would one suggest?” The matter is up for Council discussion as the Myall Coast News Of The Area goes to print.

Road Protest By Margie TIERNEY

A RALLY attended by around 60 passionate locals was held in Karuah last week opposing changes to Mustoms Road. The road has been cut back to a one way road to allow a section of the road to be a pedestrian walkway. President of the Karuah Progress Association, Fred McInerney told News Of The Area, “There are several reasons for opposition, the one way road with right of way for vehicles away from the Tarean road area has already seen many near miss situations and it is considered an accident waiting to happen.” “The pedestrian section has been condemned as not good enough, mobility scooters and prams have difficulty travelling on it and although they are separated from the traffic by a flexible barrier, they are still very near to cars which travel along there.” “As well, there have been many complaints from bus driver and delivery people.” Port Stephens Council was represented by Councillors Paul LeMottee and Giacomo Arnott, along with Group Manager of Facilities and Services, Greg Cable. “They did agree that it wasn’t a good outcome [what had been

done so far],” Mr McInerney said. “Port Stephens Council also undertook to have further consultation with community members to try to come to the best outcome.” Port Stephens MP Kate Washington also attended the rally. “Numerous people raised their concerns with me, both before and after the works were undertaken.” “I met with Council and those

concerns were dismissed,” Ms Washington said. “I then wrote to Roads and Maritime Services seeking an urgent safety assessment.” “RMS has now referred the item back to the Council Traffic Committee to be reconsidered.” Len Roberts, CEO of the Karuah Local Aboriginal Land Council (KLALC) said, “KLALC has been concerned about the lack of pedestrian access to town and the dangerous conditions at

that spot for about 20 years.” “This is the place where a fatal accident occurred in the past with a pedestrian being hit by a car.” Mr Roberts added, “KLALC accepts that the Council has acted in good faith and will continue to find a just and appropriate solution.” “However, KLALC sees the only solution is a boardwalk on the river side of the road that will link the western area to the shops.”

UNITING TO PROTECT OUR SENIORS

It is well documented that seniors can be vulnerable when it comes to financial matters. The available legal remedies tend to make recovery of funds an expensive exercise. A Supreme Court case of Catherine Margaret Thorn as Executrix of the Estate of the Late Betty McAuley v Ian Geoffrey Boyd [2014] NSWSC 1159 illustrates this point. Betty McAuley gave $260,000 to her nephew at a time when she was becoming confused. The NSW Trustee & Guardian was ultimately appointed her financial manager and the Trustee commenced recovery action. Subsequently, Betty passed away and her executor continued to pursue the recovery in the Supreme Court of NSW. The executor succeeded in obtaining orders that the nephew repay the

funds, but the nephew’s major asset was his family home and this was co-owned with his wife. She argued that she had the right to be heard against the sale of her home. After many court cases and appeals, orders were finally upheld that the family home could be sold to repay the estate.

To try to avoid this scenario, seniors should take the best steps they can to protect themselves legally and the community can help by taking an active role in watching out for the vulnerable. Of interest in this case was that the nephew wanted $150,000 more from Betty. The solicitor acting for Betty rang the Bank and warned them against withdrawing funds other than day to day expenses until Betty was assessed.

Chamber meeting with Federal MP The Federal Member for Lyne, Dr David Gillespie dropped into Tea Gardens last week for a chat and lunch with members of the Myall Coast Chamber of Commerce and Tourism.

By Margie TIERNEY

THE Federal Member for Lyne, Dr David Gillespie dropped into Tea Gardens last week for a chat and lunch with members of the Myall Coast Chamber of Commerce and Tourism. “We invited Dr Gillespie to show him what we are doing as a revitalised Chamber, to better support local businesses and encourage tourism to the area,” Chamber President, Graham Lang said. To that end, discussions centred around what the Federal Government was doing to combat crippling

electricity prices impacting on businesses and households. Dr Gillespie’s meeting coincided with the release last week of the ACCC’s long awaited report into improving electricity affordability for Australian consumers. The inquiry, which began in March 2017, released 56 recommendations detailing ways to fix the national electricity market. The report was handed over to the Federal Treasurer with the A Triple C estimating that if its recommendations are adopted, it will save the average household between 20 to 25 percent on their

News Of The Area asked Dr Gillespie whether it was realistic that young people would be able to enter the home ownership market. “If they leave the major centres, such as Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane or

they have inherited wealth, they’ll be able to buy,” Dr Gillespie said. “We are trying to encourage more businesses to move from cities to regional areas.“ Dr Gillespie is also well aware that his electorate of

Lyne is the oldest when it comes to age of its voters. “I have the most wise and experienced electorate in the country, by virtue of demographics,” Dr Gillespie said. “I also have a lot of people who are dependant on their

income from the Government, being of pension age.” Last week the Federal Coalition Government announced a further 14,200 new aged care places, with a focus on allocations in regional, rural and remote communities.

Jessica Harris, who runs Lazy Paddles, is also sponsoring a kayak race. “This will be for teenagers 13 to 16 years of age in our double kayaks,” Jessica said. “We’re calling it the Lazy Paddles Dash for Cash with a first prize of $100. With less than three months to the big day, this year’s festival is gaining momentum. Axemen and women from the Central Coast Association will be staging

a wood chop demonstration throughout the day. The Greenpaws Dog Show will be back as well. As always, it will be open to every pooch in the district with prizes ranging from the best in show to the oldest, cutest or the most waggly tail so every dog has its day. There’ll be live music, including a Crowded House Tribute band and of course no Myall River Festival would be complete without fireworks. The Myall Coast Chamber of Commerce and Tourism would also like to encourage all businesses in town to have a presence, whether it be having a stall or sponsoring an event.

THE Myall River Festival Committee is calling on families, businesses and community groups to get on board with its plans for a raft race for this year’s Festival on Saturday 13 October. The idea is to build a raft that will see you take to the water on the big day. There will be prizes for the best raft and the fastest raft and the silliest raft. “The Raft Race will be for teams of four,” the Committee’s Jessica Harris said. “I want to encourage clubs and businesses as well as families to enter.” The idea is for groups

Puppet Fun for end of Holiday By Margie TIERNEY IT was back to school this week for hundreds of local youngsters amid the sighs of relief of many parents and grandparents. Through the winter break it’s never easy to keep the children occupied, but Tea Gardens Library did it’s best to ease the burden. A puppet making workshop proved a great success with the youngsters and staff at the Library. “I don’t know who had more fun, the children or me,” Librarian Chris Shelly said. When News Of the Area dropped into the Library it was organised chaos with a big dose of happy laughing children added to the mix. Sock Puppets were the

order of the day and proved to be a big hit. “We supplied all the materials including the socks for the children to decorate,” Chris said. Given free reign, the children created happy socks, funny socks, and some downright scary sock puppets which came alive with the help of the youngster’s ingenious creative skills. In this age of electronic gadgetry it was a welcome sight to see the puppets come to life, much as they did when the art of puppetry began some three thousand years ago. The puppets also proved to be a great source of family fun with brothers and sisters enjoying some friendly banter and great play acting.

By Margie TIERNEY MEMBERS of the Myall Art and Craft Centre have been working long and hard over the winter months creating rugs to be donated to the residents of Peter Sinclair Gardens Aged Care Facility in Hawks Nest. Much work and love have gone into the rugs. Janette Coppock told News Of the Area, “The lovely rugs are knitted and assembled by Myall Art and Craft members.” The team, led by Dianne Taylor has been creating the rugs and quilts for many years. But the work they do wouldn’t be possible without the donations of wool and fabric from the local community and Craft centre members. Dianne Taylor said, “It is a wonderful way to use our skills and love of creating to contribute to our community.” “We hope that these rugs provide much comfort for the residents.” Peter Sinclair Gardens, which began its life as Myall Lodge back in 2002 with just 10 beds, is now home to more than 60 full time residents. The Myall Art and Craft Centre is always looking for new members. Whether you like to paint, knit, quilt, frame pictures, create mosaics, the list is endless of what’s on offer at the Myall Street Centre.

Unacceptable Wheel OPINION Access Dear News Of The Area, ACCORDING to the National Census reports Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest has the oldest mean age for residents in Australian communities. No doubt this has been helped by the two retirement villages in Tea Gardens. I find it quite strange that there is a lack of wheelchair support in our community. I have been living at Palm Lake Resort for the past twelve months. I use wheelchairs and mobility scooters as I am unable to walk. Unfortunately the Palm Lake Resort bus has no wheelchair facilities. Surprisingly this is also the case for all means of transport in this region. There are no wheelchair equipped taxis and the local bus service has no wheelchair facility. Nor, surprisingly does the local community bus service which provides transport for people to attend medical appointments in Newcastle and Raymond Terrace. I have been eligible to use subsidized Taxi vouchers but they are useless as there

are no taxis. I called BusWays Administration last year and was told that “their contract did not require them to provide buses with wheelchair facilities”. I found this quite disturbing and contacted the NSW Department of Transport. I was assured that all bus companies must provide wheelchair support but there had been a delay with the procurement of suitably equipped buses and a delivery timetable was uncertain. Wheelchairs and mobility scooters are difficult to maneuver along footpaths that disappear or are non-existent in many streets. The bridge linking Tea Gardens to Hawks Nest has a narrow footpath that is dangerous for pedestrians and doubly so for wheelchair and mobility scooter users. As more and more local residents will require the use of wheelchairs and mobility scooters into the future, I’m sure this unacceptable situation will improve. I just hope it will be sooner rather than later. Greg Kentish Resident, Palm Lake Resort Tea Gardens

Next week I have to work on the barbecue for my kid’s AFL game. The problem is I’m a vegan, and I don’t think I can bring myself to cook sausages, bacon and eggs. What’s the alternative? Thanks, Mrs BP, Tea Gardens Dear Mrs BP, The thing is, I’m thinking that your son is probably a vegan too. Not one of those lean, six-pack bearing vegans on Instagram, but a weedy little kid who tries his best, he really does, Mrs BP, but his iron levels are so low that he not only fails to get any ball time, but he’s actually a huge hindrance to the team. They’ve taken him on because that is the AFL charter. You have to accept everyone and hope for the best. You know, you could just swap with the dad doing oranges. I’m sure he’d rather be on the end of a pair of tongs. Or how about you stand in for the goalie referee? All you have to do in that situation is wave around a white flag, or two white flags, I’m not sure of the finer details, but you’ll know you’ve done the wrong thing when some six-foot tall monster with a man bun and hairy thighs comes charging at you, full of vengeance. How about instead of the usual snags and bacon, you cook up some haloumi, capsicum and tomato skewers? I can just imagine the parents who are spending their entire weekend driving to and from the Myall Coast to Terrigal turning up for their usual caffeine fix and snag sandwich, and instead getting some kale juice and a vegie kebab. Yep, they’re just going to love you, Mrs BP. Look, I really don’t know what else to suggest, so I’m going to tell you what the coach tells the kids when they start whining about petty things on the field: ‘Suck it up, princess. Now, get in there and be part of the team.’ Carpe diem, Jasminda

Seniors Groups Funding Available Applications have opened for funding to support the 2019 NSW Seniors Festival, formerly NSW Seniors Week.

q Kate Washington MP with members of Port Stephens University of the Third Age (U3A)

APPLICATIONS have opened for funding to support the 2019 NSW Seniors Festival, formerly NSW Seniors Week. The annual event will run from Wednesday 13 February to Sunday 24 February 2019 and include a host of statewide and local activities. Local groups can apply for grants of between $1,000 to $5,000 for local events, or up to $10,000 to support regional level events. Acting Shadow Minister for Ageing Kate Washington

has encouraged groups in the Hunter to apply for funding to put on local events. Senior Festival 2018 events across the Hunter included Yoga in the Park, croquet come-and-try days, film screenings, information sessions on legal issues for seniors, and social morning teas. The annual Seniors Festival also includes a free Gala Concert, with tickets released closer to the event. Ms Washington said,

Congratulations to both players for a wonderful display of precision bowling. The Club Championship Triples was also decided

today with the team of Col Amos, Ron Webster and Barry Drayton being declared the winners. In other news: The

18 JULY: There were perfect weather conditions for bowling today and 38 players participated in the usual Wednesday Nominated Triples competition. Both games were played on the grass green which is noticeably gathering pace. The team of Dave Perry, Greg Smith and Col Saillard had the unusual result of 2 draws 9/9 and 12/12 whilst 3 teams won both their games. The very consistent team of Doug Naylor, John Yabsley and Alan Greenhalgh won the day on a massive 58 points (again).

Col Amos won the very popular $20 Myall Bistro voucher. 20 July: Wild westerly winds greeted the 10 diehard players for Friday Open Pairs today. The grass green was lighting fast and after about 10 ends of frustrating bowls, with more bowls in the ditch than on the green, players packed it in for the comfort of the clubhouse. 22 July: In contrast to Friday, conditions for the playing of the unfinished final of the Club Major Singles Championship which was originally called off due to heavy rain on 3 June. In that match between Richard Lee and Jeff Baker, 12 ends were completed

with Richard holding a commanding lead 14-4 when play resumed today. Some great bowls were played on resumption with Jeff slowly closing the gap during the next 13 ends and after 27 ends were played Jeff managed to establish a 6 shot lead. Richard then put on a spurt of 9 shots to edge in front but at the 33rd it was “game –on” with both players tied on 27. Jeff had a one shot lead going into what was to be the last end when he unexpectedly dropped a 4 to see Richard claim the Club Championship title for the fourth time. The final score; Richard 31, Jeff 28.

“Whether it is local morning teas, or the State-wide Gala Concert, the annual Seniors Festival is a celebration of life for older Australians.” “The Seniors Festival also includes important information sessions and workshops for older people on legal issues, healthy living, staying safe in your home,” she said. Any groups wishing to apply for funding to support a local event can find more information at https:// seniorsfestival.nsw.gov.au/ events/grants-program. Ms Washington said, “Older Australians contribute so much, in so many ways to our communities. Seniors Festival is a great opportunity to celebrate their contributions and serves as an important reminder that seniors should be respected and valued.”

performing her songs for crowds across the country. Since then, her sound has evolved into catchy, quirky melodies that are unique, yet very easy to listen to. She has the perfect mix of originality, stage presence, and incredibly smooth toned

her own unique sound. Kelly says, “If my music were a drink, it would probably be one of those special cocktails - a mix of folk and pop, with a dash of Indie, served with a bubbly country-pop twist.” Kelly’s latest offering, her original EP ‘Two Peas in a Pod’, was released through iTunes on Boxing Day, 2013.

It debuted at number three on the Australian iTunes charts, following fellow singer-songwriters Ed Sheeran and Passenger. Kelly’s influences include: Missy Higgins, Colbie Cailet, Dixie Chicks, and JJ Heller, Kelly’s performance is guaranteed to be the perfect remedy for a cold winter weekend.

Epic 4 hour game Karuah RSL Bowls Club By Trevor DAVIES SPORTSPEOPLE often look different after a game than they do at the start. The picture below shows two very gallant sportsmen, albeit a bit ragged and in failing light, but know this, they had just battled out an epic 4 hour game that was only decided right at the very death! Every end was close all the way. Quality skills and sportsmanship all the way. Changes in the lead, elation, disappointment and comebacks right to the very end. The Karuah Men’s Major Singles Championship had it all and in the end Tom Mulley won out in the clubs annual Champaign event beating the clubs most consistent player

this year Dennis Ashbridge. In a game format where first to reach 31 shots wins, every end saw lead changes. Dennis wrested the early and mid game ascendency to lead 25 / 14. Then the unthinkable happened and Tom took 14 unanswered shots by simply brilliant bowling to take the lead 28 / 25! Dennis fought back first to 28 all, then to take the lead back at 29 / 28. Tom rallied to get first to 30 / 29, then, on the last end, picked up the shot to take the position of reigning Club men’s singles champion for 2018, winning 31 / 29. It was a final described by Kim Post a keen follower of the game as “a great final, just what a final should be, fought for every step of the way”. I referred earlier to Dennis as one of the Club’s most consistent players.

He truly earned that title in 2018, having finished as runner up in the championship 4s, Triples, pairs and now the Major Singles. He still had a smile and handshake for Tom after the game. A great sportsman and great player, victories will come Dennis, well played. All hail Tom Mulley, Club Champion in the Major Singles for 2018. Still plenty to come at Karuah RSL Bowls club. Mixed pairs, Matara, 3x3s, and Pennant Finals and of course our weekly social gala games on Tuesday, Wednesday or Sunday. If you would like to try the sport or you are a player looking for a game, come on down. Names by 09:30, first bowls at 10:00. Best green on the coast and friendliest players! See you at Karuah. Colin Rapley. Riley Harris was the junior runner up with a best of species salmon and Poppy Rapley won the juniors and the outing. Next outing is 3rd-5th of August.
